Craziness! There is a complete line blockage and any water we use ends up in the catch basin out in the back yard but it's getting to the point where the sewage will start to flow up the floor drains in my basement and I don't know what to do!!! If any of you have worked wit the city for this type of problem please tell me how fast (slow) the process went for you and what if anything I can do to get them out there quicker!

I have had standing water in front of my house when it rains at the curb for two years. My neighbor called 311. A crew from the city finally came out to dig up the ground in front of my house near the curb and supposedly fixed the pipe. They left one of those horses out there for the longest saying that they wanted to come back to see if the water had gone done. I eventually removed the horse. They even came back and put new grass seed down. It seemed to have stopped however now we have the same problem again and when it rains there is always standing water at the curb. I don't know if it is a broken pipe or what. It is frustrating and I will have to call again this year to see what happens. Don't know what the city did other than waste our time. Maybe this time I will call the Alderman's office.

  • I wish I had an answer for you that would solve the problem. But I can only recommend that you make it a point to involve the alderman..call them daily to find out what is happening. .this will encourage them to resolve the problem ...there is also a site with I believe the Sun Times or perhaps the Tribune that addresses problems that the city is responsible for..and them this complaint. ..it might also help to resolve the problem. Good luck!

Thank you Andreas Morgen, I've emailed the alderman and hopefully something will come out of it.

@Mike Raffety, what did we miss? That article is about a neighborhood, not about a neighborhood school. I didn't have a chance to read the whole article that you linked to your post. Yet at first sight it doesn't seem to specialize on schools. Also to your question about "bad" students and "bad" influences, in my experience as a public educator "bad" is an extremely volatile and complex concept. Our young ones are a reflection of our extreme social inequality and we can't simplify such a complex debate into "good" and "bad". Public education is not a classic Western with good ones, bad ones and ugly ones. Yet one thing is for sure: A school is only as good as the community/societal system that supports it. Educators and our students are sick and tired of being the pawns of misguided public debate.

  • Montse, my post of the Patch article was in response to lamont johnson's first comment in the thread. No, it's not about schools, it's something else that is positive about Chicago.
