Great job by the Chicago PD. God bless them for protecting our city from those who wish to do harm. May the city and especially the media give them praise for their work during NATO. Chicago PD has a great leader in Garry McCarthy.

I had a wheel chair on my bus one day and he couldn't believe how bikes would just even cut off CTA buses and large trucks and how dangerous it is. Please this summer just stay safe on your bikes please.
The first springtime public meeting to review/comment on the Draft Network of the City's Streets for Cycling 2020 plan is this coming Tuesday:
Copernicus Center
5216 W. Lawrence Ave.
Tuesday, May 22nd, 2012
4 – 8 p.m., presentation with Q&A at 4:30 & 6:30p.m.
More info here, along with dates & locations for other meetings/webinars: http://www.chicagobikes.org/public/SFC.php
It seems to me like they need serious, detailed info like people have been offering here, esp. stuff like Bike Jedi posted about specific locations.

Anyone who lives in the neighborhood is likely as frustrated as I am with AT&T because of the terrible service they "provide" during Cubs games. While my iPhone4 displays full bars and 3G, during Cubs games, I may as well turn the phone off because it simply does not work. Making calls is a crap shoot, dropping calls is guaranteed and data speeds are more like 1996 dial up. I am so dependent on my cell phone for business purposes...

Making calls is a crap shoot, dropping calls is guaranteed and data speeds are more like 1996 dial up. I am so dependent on my cell phone for business purposes and afternoon work-week games pretty much force me to my land line. Does anyone know if AT&T is doing anything to add more capacity and address this issue? Does anyone have an iPhone running on Verizon's network? If so, is it any better? My contract is up next month so I am going to be switching- I just want to know if anyone has had better luck with another provider.

I have an iPhone with Verizon service and my ability to do certain things while at a game at Wrigley is spotty - sometimes things (i.e. uploading a photo to Instagram or Facebook) work quickly and other times it fails to upload. There seems to be no consistency to the service (or lack thereof). Overall though, reception across the city with Verizon is better than with AT&T.
My boyfriend and I both have iphones with Verizon and live near Wrigley. Just Northeast. I have never had a problem and I live in a highrise. I have lots of friends that have iphones with AT&T and there are quite a few places where I get reception and they...

I have lots of friends that have iphones with AT&T and there are quite a few places where I get reception and they don't. On the flip side, my boyfriend works in the Sears Tower and doesn't get reception very well and his co-workers have AT&T iphone with no problems.
Overall, I wouldn't switch from Verizon. I've had then for years and have very few if any dropped calls. I've had windows, droid and iphone with them. Iphone is the best and they keep putting up more towers.

In light of the scandalous intentions of the Cubs owners', let your aldermen know not to enter into any arrangement to improve the ballpark that includes any tax payer money. Make them use their own money to grow their business instead of using that money for divisive Superpac messages. I couldn't be more disenfranchised from this family...true colors shining through. What an eye opener!

Improving Wrigley should be at the bottom of Chicago's list of priorities. Chicago has so many more critical things to spend money on: infrastructure, schools, our massive budget hole, public transit, emergency services, parks, and so on.
This doesn't have to be a question of politics or baseball. Wrigley is a privately owned building, so let its owners pay for upgrades. Individuals wanting to support Wrigley's improvement can buy paving stones, refreshments and souvenirs inside the stadium, etc.

I fully believe the full Ricketts clan knew what was up with these proposed ads. And it's emblematic of most of the 1% class that they begrudge and fight with all of their might any dime going to the lower classes while also expecting us to let them slide on taxes and give away the farm for the privilege of keeping their precious businesses in town. They can go to hell. If they can keep their crappy, urine-scented dump of a ballpark profitable on their own, it can collapse into a pile of brick for all I care.

The root of the problem is that honest, reasonable, rational people have to share a society with sociopaths of all income classes, cultures, races and political leanings. People who do not seem to care about anything but their immediate gratification. They are obsessed with themselves, and frankly don't care who pays.
This applies equally to someone who games the system to receive assistance, and to someone who signs off on financial instruments, that are so arcane no one can understand them as an investment, simply to ensure a bonus for that particular financial period.
Sadly, the media is complicit in maintaining this system, as they do nothing but highlight them, and their mockery of our social compact by constantly chattering about how clever, or cunning or ingenious their cons are. There is condemnation tempered with opinion pieces blaming their victims, or asking if playing to win is so really bad.
if you want to play to win, join a basketball team. Don't attempt to sabotage a financial system or abuse a social assistance program to your gain. But there are people who are simply incapable of caring about what damage they do to others. They are at the top, and at the bottom, on the left and on the right.

Gahhhhhh. I am so tired of the petty crap that happens to my property. I try very hard to keep the front of my house looking nice. Why do people have to rip plants out of the ground/planter or destroy retaining walls? Clearly break-ins or other more intrusive crimes are worse, but at least I can understand why someone would want a computer or cell phone. I don't get the thrill of ruining someone's landscaping. I don't know if it will help, but I guess I have to move forward with installing cameras.

Because many people are just complete numbskulls (a lovely phrase I've chosen to inherit from my grandpa) who, for whatever reason, just haven't any common decency or conscience nor manners when interacting with the rest of society.
I'm sorry your property has been damaged. I guess that's just another "perk" of city life. Bleh.

Just an open message to the management of EveryBlock. Allowing peoples comments to be hidden with five "No Thanks", even when they may have twice that in "Thanks" is really diminishing this site. Having to constantly click reveal when reading a thread is both time consuming and unnecessary (take a look at the pickup truck parking thread, 25% of the comments are hidden even though they have 10+ thank yous).
Its your site, do what you want, but unless this gets fixed I for one am finding a different forum where professional debate can occur on an issue and a single user with five accounts can't silence any post he/she doesn't like.

This outfit will shred & then recycle all your useless old papers.
They charge 50 cents a pound, $10 minimum for their walk-in service, which sounds pretty cheap to me if you've got 20~30 lbs of this clutter like I do. (Tax records from 1978....)
They have a loading zone, too- don't even have to feed the parking machine.

So far I have only seen them on beat up old pick up trucks and one of them seems to have made the front of my home their place of choice to park. Don't get me wrong, people are allowed to park where they want on the street but there are reasons pick-up truck are considered "B" rated trucks and should only be parked on commercial streets. First, Can Mel's office verify that these signs are being passed out legitimately, since his name is on the sign? Second, why is the city not enforcing "B" plates on pick-up trucks? I need assistance in getting rid of the beater truck that has made the front of my home parking spot of choice.

Why do comments with a lot of "Thanks" get hidden when they reach the 5-count of "No Thanks"?
In some cases, the "Thanks" are far above the "No Thanks."
That's a really good question, Bob. I've been uncomfortable with the automatic assignment of invisibility to a level of no thanking and find some threads don't make sense without the hidden posts. Though it's easy to reveal them, I think the invisibility can create preconceptions that affect how I read...

Not sure what EB is doing with the data from the thanks/no thanks binary (anyone know?) but the false dichotomy might skew any info collected. It's easy for participants to understand "thanks/no thanks" as "agree/disagree" or "like/dislike"—but the words actually mean something different and function differently as used in real life.
Online life doesn't necessarily have to replicate 'real life', of course, but I'd like a button for "Thanks for the input. I disagree but can we keep talking?" :)

Maybe they had an emergency and had to split, maybe Tony though Sal locked it up...I don't know!
But after seeing the shovels, rakes, trowels and other costly tools in there the best thing for me to do was to lock them up for you.
Your shiny, bullet-proof Master lock was just sitting there on the ground so I put it on the lockbar and voila! Stolen tools and wasted tax dollars averted!

Can you even do this? Ask to rezone a block full of people where you don't even live? And don't they have to tell you what they intend to do with the property? PRETTY SCARY. Dying to see how this one is handled.

@jeff f, I appreciate your post. You inadvertently made a point for me to which, I think, we can all agree; public participation is key. Pursuant to the Chicago Zoning Ordinance, public notice is required for any zoning variance, which is a zoning change for a particular property (ie Lycee Francais). Once an entire area is up-zoned, there is no mandate for public notice, given that the project fits the current zoning parameters. A builder would be able to build the maximum amount of units, to the maximum height, without any public input or scrutiny. Serving on the zoning advisory committee, I am sure you are well aware of the fact that a zoning variation, in and of itself, does not set a precedent. However, a complete zoning change would set a precedent. If this happens you will see a domino effect throughout the neighborhood. If you were truly concerned with public participation, you would be vehemently opposed to the up-zoning.
Everyone should remember that the downzoning (and upzoning) that happened city wide 10 years ago or so was intentional and meant to stop this repeated rezoning process. There was LOTS of public notice. Even if your alderman recently snuck a rezone through the system, you can challenge it (and win)...
Everyone should remember that the downzoning (and upzoning) that happened city wide 10 years ago or so was intentional and meant to stop this repeated rezoning process. There was LOTS of public notice. Even if your alderman recently snuck a rezone through the system, you can challenge it (and win) if you can prove they didn't follow proper notification procedures.
If your building is larger than current zoning allows, you are lucky and your property is more valuable as result. You do not need to bring zoning in line with existing for any reason other than major changes to your building or new construction. Selling has no bearing on zoning either. If everyone needed to bring their building into compliance with the zoning it actually is, then the entire city would need to revert to what it was prior to the big rezoning event. If you want to dormer your house and it has no impact on the neighborhood, talk to your alderman about that and he/she can work with you on it.
That being said, if the neighborhood want to upzone/downzone on a block by block basis (not parcel by parcel) then with support of the block, it should be able to happen just fine with the proper reasons. And the proper reasons to change an entire block do not include reasons regarding individual parcel zoning issues.

I was just about to post a similar message. I am so proud of our city and police force after this weekend's NATO events. Clearly the preparation and execution was well thought out and led to a VERY controlled response to these out-of-towners looking to cause trouble. I am all for free speech and peaceful protesting, but when people who don't live here come with sinister intentions it will certainly lead to conflict that had to be shut down. I also agree that Garry McCarthy has done a wonderful job. Being on the ground with his officers sends a strong message and his calm, matter-of-fact demeanor when speaking with the media is right on. You have to give Rahm credit for picking him as well. GOOD JOB RAHM, GARRY and ALL THE OFFICERS. THANK YOU!
