The Plastic Bag Ordinance is Working--Very, Very Well!

The number of plastic bags customers use is down 42 percent just since the new ordinance was introduced in February. Only 49% of customers are using plastic bags, down from 82% before. And the number of customers who bring their own re-usable bags to stores has tripled. Big success.

Chicago's 7-cents-a-bag tax driving down bag use, study shows
Chicago's 7-cents-a-bag tax on paper and plastic bags is driving consumer behavior in the right direction to reduce landfill costs: Both the number of disposable bags used and the number of shoppers willing to pay for them is way down. Before Feb.

I noticed less bag litter in the streets when the original bag ordinance, banning the really flimsy bags, went into effect. Now that the store can use the flimsy ones again, there's one caught in the tree outside my sunroom windows.

I found a loose dog this morning on the corner of Clark and Pratt around 7 am. Female, brindle, a bit on the older side (8-12), very sweet, very docile. She has on a pink collar but no tags and does not have a microchip. Please let me know if you know this dog.

Where to Watch the Blackhawks' Playoff Games in Chicago
If attending a game is out of the picture, consider watching the game somewhere where you can still be surrounded by fellow fans. Whether the game is home or away, you can still catch the excitement at one, or a few, of the many official Blackhawks bars across Chicago.

Rogers Park Station

...there's still time to see the exhibit exhibit at the society's storefront at 7363 N. Greenview...

    Rogers Park Station
One of the best things about my work day is the ease of the commute. I walk one block east to the Metra station and ride south to the terminus at Ogilvie Station, which takes about 20 minutes. Then I walk a few blocks east to City Hall.

  • Michael Archangel Same swamp but now restocked with new predators!

@Omar - You are absolutely correct about the trash littering both sides of the fenced in Union Pacific right of way. UP does little to no ongoing maintenance. The last time I saw UP crews was last Spring when they cut down some of the taller weed-like trees along the embankment.

If neighbors want to take the initiate and clean up along the embankment, they risk a charge of criminal trespass not to mention tetanus and animal bites.

Found Black Cat

Black cat with a small bit of white on his chest and no tags, outside in the 1100 block of Columbia. Very friendly. Any one know of a lost cat? Or simply a neighbor with a sweet outdoor cat?

  • Nan

Maggie- Please let your neighbor know that he/she's really putting Panthro at serious risk by letting him roam outdoors. So many dangers - including rat poison. Big cities are not a healthy or natural habitat for cats.

  • I know that, and you know that, but so many people just keep letting cats roam. There are of course the dangers you mentioned, but there is also the threat of being captured and tortured by sadistic freaks. A friend of mine learned that lesson the hard way. Something she will never get over. Anyway, yeah, I'll leave a note on the owners door. The owner is really nice and loves Panthro a lot.

Spanish Conversation

Spanish speakers from average to good. How about
meeting once a week around 7pm for an hour's worth
of Spanish conversation? I'd like to form a group.
Anyone interested? We could get together at the Royal,
corner of Sheridan and Pratt.

  • I would definitely meet up for conversations. My Spanish speaking used to be fairly advanced, but is back to beginner because of my lack of practice, I hope that's ok!

  • Hi...
Wonderful. Of course it's okay. I'd enjoy the practice too. If we don't
use it, we lose it. How is Thursday, the 27th, at 7pm at the Royal?
