We scared off car thieves tonight

Dear neighbors:
We observed a young man trying to break into cars tonight about 3:00 a.m. right in front of our house. My fiancee yelled "Police!" real loud and it scared him away. Ha Ha
Our whole square block is VERY DARK because of at least four streetlights out, and I believe we have become a target for hoodlums who can see how dark it is. This is the 6600 north, square block bounded by Albion, Greenview, North Shore, and...

Our whole square block is VERY DARK because of at least four streetlights out, and I believe we have become a target for hoodlums who can see how dark it is. This is the 6600 north, square block bounded by Albion, Greenview, North Shore, and Newgard. I have asked repeatedly to have the streetlights fixed, but if anyone in this square block would like to help, please e-mail or call the 49th Ward, Alderman Moore's office. We have requested these lights be fixed at least THREE times. Why help these rotten thieves by not having adequate street lights? Please help. Thanks, neighbors.

@Tired of Liars - Regardless of your level of support for the alderman, the simple fact (one that you routinely forget over and over again) is that what you are describing is not the role of the alderman. It is true that the alderman can attempt to exert pressure on the CPD district commander but it is ultimately the role of the CPD to enforce the laws. You describe policing activities - juvenile curfew violations, Indigents???, and gang bangers and that responsibility is with the CPD. You can whine about this all you want (and you will) but those are the facts.

Now, you are going to have to expand on the indigent comment because the way you wrote your screed, it gives the impression that being indigent is a crime.

Feeling letdown because the Arts Festival is over?

Never fear. Another banner weekend is coming up. It's time for Shakespeare in the Park. Friday and Saturday evenings, Chicago Shakespeare Theater brings Romeo and Juliet to Loyola Park. Bring chairs or a blanket and a picnic dinner.

In need a room on the ground floor for about a month or 6 weeks?

I live in East Rogers Park. I may need to have surgery on my hip and will be on crutches and a hip brace for 6 weeks. Does anyone know of anything that may be available to rent where I can stay. Must be ground level and safe building. I'm scared because I currently live on a 3rd floor walk up and that won't work on crutches and in a brace. Thanks!

  • Thanks everyone. I'm 48 and still need to work downtown during the time I'm on crutches and in a brace. My insurance only covers inpatient rehab. So just need a super short-term rental to help during the window with brace and crutches, when I cannot get to the 3rd floor of my walkup. Thanks again for the ongoing suggestions.

...and there was LIGHT in Rogers Park

I am delighted to report that sometime today, workmen fixed all four
streetlights that were out. I had a lovely, light-filled walk with my dogs
just now. By the way, police presence has been noted and appreciated
twice today! Thanks, friends and city employees.

  • I am happy that your problem was resolved.

    Glad that C P D was visible.

  • Wazzup not available

sorry it took a neighborhood blog to get the political attention needed - remember this at voting time. Service should be provided without having to wait days and days and then having resort to a blog to assemble neighborhood support. I was taught - attention to details - makes all the difference. That usually means - the right people in a job makes all the difference in results.

  • The workmen came out to replace the lights literally within hours of being notified by Emily. Thanks to local social media, she was able to get the correct information about how to seek help (by dialing 311). Seems to me that everything worked the way it should.

We viewed the Partial Solar Eclipse on August 21, 2017 at the Rogers Park Library. It was a cloudy day but we were able capture some pictures of the partial eclipse in the Reading Garden. Even though the skies were overcast, some parts of the eclipse punched through the clouds. Here are composites of pictures of the moon crossing the face of the sun, and moving away from the moon using a digital camera with an eclipse viewer. The photo of the maximum coverage of the sun was taken without the filter but with a fast shutter. About 40 watched from the library’s Reading Garden. We give a big thank you to our children's librarian Kristin Grace for organizing this event.
