Which Chamber of Commerce is better?

Is there a difference between the Rogers Park Business Alliance and the Rogers Park Chamber of Commerce? I'm confused as to why there are two separate business organizations but want to make sure I contact the one that can best help me locate a storefront for my computer repair shop and also help with long term support and publicity. Thank you.

  • Reid Hyams X-Art Entertainment / Commercial Affiliated

PS: And to answer your question Donald Bunk, which is rather obvious at this point, the organization that can help you find the best location for your business with the long term support that you need, is the Rogers Park Business Alliance.

As an aside, the other other group a.k.a. the unofficial chamber, is using "GoFundMe" to find support for themselves to lease a new space... all the others are well established and have a long term history of success + getting things done.

  • Reid Hyams X-Art Entertainment / Commercial Affiliated

It may be easiest for you Mad to blame the demise of the RPCC on alderman, however that is shortsighted. The RPCC's demise has no one to blame other than themselves. The RPCC has an obligation to the community to take that responsibility, and no one else.

Does Your Street Tweet?

No more than the President could live without his Twitter account, your street also should be able to tweet. Make sure that your street is enrolled in the free Streets of Rogers Park program in which it can have its very own Facebook page and Twitter account. Check out this free community service at http://rp1000.blogspot.com/2015/04/the-streets-of-rogers-park.html

PS: Please remove Eatslake Terrace from the "Streets of Rogers Park" program (www.facebook.com/pages/Eastlake-Terrace/1513861442208550), it serves no purpose for us residents that live on Eastlake.

  • Maybe Eastlake Terrace should join the chamber. One benefit of chamber membership is that if the outside of your establishment is suffering due to littering, it will visit on one of its Fresh Start Mondays and clean up the exterior for you. You might even receive one of its free, 33-gallon plastic garbage cans to solve your problems. The chamber will even promote you online through its official website (RogersPark.cc), monthly newsletter, official social media accounts (Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, LinkedIn, and Instagram), and Meetup.com.

    Any thoughts?

You are attempting to initiate a discussion based on a fallacious premise. What you have laid out is a form of a false choice. Your question is, basically, does A = B or does B = A and doing that ignores choices C, D, E, etc.

But good luck with that! I am off to dinner! Cheers!

Denzel Burke & Michael Phillips Sentencing

I haven't heard anything about the prosecution of these two criminals in some time. I genuinely believe that a fair disposition of their case would be to serve a mandatory 20 years in the USMC or a mandatory term of 20 years in prison. If they would choose for the military, they would be on felony probation for that entire 20 year term, and should they withdraw from the service or be less than honorably discharged the balance of that time would be subject to be seven in incarceration. There is absolutely no excuse for their actions

Gutters - Stolen Again! Be on look out for Silver MiniVan Lic Plate Z69 - 425

Gutters on my garage - recently replaced after they were stolen about a month ago - were stolen again last night (April 18, 2017)! Neighbors yelled at the middle-aged white guy, driving a silver Mini-van with IL Plate Z69 - 425 but he took-off after sticking the gutter in his vehicle. He only got one downspout off the garage and I imagine he will be prowling around again looking for more. This was in the 6600 block of N Glenwood (shared alley with 6600 block of Newgard). I know gutter theft was posted previously but I could not find it on EveryBlock this morning.

  • The downspouts are about $11 new from Home Depot, I'd think the scrap value would be significantly below that.

  • Bill in Rogers Park Rogers Parker - co-founder of Glenwood Neighbors

Sorry that happened to you, too, Vinster. I thought we might have been rid of the scourge but apparently not. And you and Verena are both right - the cost to replace is minimal so not sure why this guy continues to vandalize and steal other's downspouts for so little payback if any.

Bad neighbors

Anybody know how to "encourage" the building management to get rid of bad neighbors? Loud fights, drunken behavior, broken glass in the yard, etc. Have called the cops several times and have notified the building management, but nothing seems to be happening

  • You could also get the phone numbers and emails of other people in your building and all call 911 together when the people are not acting like good neighbors. If many people call, they cannot ignore it. Also you can all complain to apartment managers at the same time. I lived in a building and we did this because they would not listen to each of us but as a group they did. We submit a list of problems together.

  • d3 NOH

Aside of the 24th district problem building handler.. If police are ignoring and aren't responding to the calls start filing complaint requests and complaint investigations after each specific call. One with 911/oemc and the other with 24th district, two different complaints that will require calling each, and you should get the actual complaint number for both, don't let them 'talk to them' or they won't make it a formal complaint.

The next Sizzling Summer Book Sale is scheduled on June 24, 2017 from 10 AM to 4 PM. at the Rogers Park Library at 6907 N. Clark St. Our book sales raise funds to supplement the book budget of the Rogers Park Library, and this year we are helping to make the Summer Learning Challenge our biggest yet. During last year’s Learning Challenge, our Rogers Park Library hosted over 2000 students.

Our book sales depend solely on the help of volunteers. One person is currently sorting the donated books from our neighbors. He triages donated books and recycles the older and worn books.

Other volunteers display the near mint-condition books on tables, and they grouped the books together as non-fiction, fiction or children’s books.

On the day of the sale, volunteers serve as cashiers, and re-sort the books that may be shuffled by customers. At 4 PM, we close the sale, and pack most of the unsold books to the Better World Books and some books are saved for the next book sale.

We deposit the money from these book sales into a fund that our librarians use to buy new books when the regular book budget is depleted. They buy mainly children’s books, and books that help those starting on their careers or GED books. These books enhance our library’s collection, and make our collection valuable to learners of all ages. Also additional materials are being bought for this year's Summer Learning Challenge.

We hope that you will volunteer to help at our next book sale or buy an armload of books. Sign up to volunteer at the reference desk and help on June 23 or 24.

There is a saying...can't remember who said it, I quoted recently. .."art is a lie that reveals the truth".

What those guys did was a deception, but it revealed more truth about the way the public interacts with conceptual art than anything else out there.

I would call it a successful work of conceptual art, the concept being the gullibility of the public, the expectations of that public in a public setting like a museum. Deception was the concept and it worked.

Awesome point Pedro, thanks for sharing that.

Save the Chamber!

After eight years of being run by an ineffectual board and thus having fostered no useful relationship with the City, the RPCoC is losing the lease at its current space. Instead of asking for neighbors to donate to a worthy organization's relocation costs by talking about their accomplishments and what they contribute to our community, The chamber has decided that it'd be better to appeal to those who want to stick it to the Alderman (due to their successful track record of fighting issues/developments that the Alderman supports?)

  • No more than 900.00. I think the deposit for having a dog is 200.00. I should know within a day or two if it will be available. It's a great place. Very clean and spacious feeling. The guy just isn't sure of his plans just yet. Don't want to get your hopes up.

  • I have something that may fit the bill. contact at 773-908-8002

Ignorant Landlord

My daughter has a serious bedbug problem, that somehow started in the apartment building that she lives in. It has been reported to the city, by calling 311. The landlord has been notified on numerous occasions and still has done nothing. Inspector came out and said apartment underneath is totally infested. Daughter has two small boys. It's an extremely frustrating situation. Landlord is not doing anything, and basically told them to move. Does anyone know anything or anyone that can help please.
Thankypu

  • Jay

Would you mind telling me on which street(s) this building is on? So other tenets can do something too.

  • I can't speak for the original poster, but I live on the 1700 block of W. Wallen. The condo board has already been cited by the city over 6 month ago and so far has done nothing to take care of the multiple violations, including bedbug infestation. So, if you think calling the city is going to solve your problem, think again. Definitely report it to the city, but don't expect things to be resolved with any urgency.

Lost Cat

We have lost our beloved cat, Opal. She's a petite tabby (gray/brown with black stripes). She has her claws, but no collar. She's friendly. Please let us know if you've seen her.

Please reply if you have any information about her! We miss her.

Where did she go missing? If she's still missing, I hope you've posted flyers near where you live with a photo of Opal.

Mice in the neighbor's unit

In our 7-unit building one neighbor (top floor) reports mouse droppings; while all other units report nothing. We're a self-managed association, and now the question raised is this: is the association charged with finding and mitigating the mouse situation, or is it on the one owner who has the issue? Would love to know what folks think of this.

  • Association.

Not seeing mouse drippings in other units doesn't mean the mice aren't already there.

Thankfully, our condo doesn't have a mice/rat problem. We do have an annual condo-wide roach treatment. Many of the units are rented out which means we have a lot of traffic/new people coming in and potentially bringing along pests. All units get the roach gel regardless of whether there are roach sightings or not.

  • seems like it has been a bad winter for mice. i have had more than ever.
i hear rat populations are also high.

    but yeah, association.

Alderman Moore Supports Proposed Project Despite Overwhelming Community Opposition Against...AGAIN!!

Alderman Moore has, at his own capricious volition, elected to support approval of the proposed Target at Sheridan/Devon Despite Overwhelming Opposition from both the locally effected business and residential communities.

My decision on proposed mixed-use development, including Target store, at Sheridan and Devon
I am writing to inform you of my decision on a proposed seven-story mixed-income and mixed-use development on the 6400 block of N. Sheridan that would include both market rate and affordable rental housing and a small "flexible format" Target store.

Mary, apparently a guy was threatening to jump off a building, perhaps the result of a domestic dispute. There were several reports on Facebook Thursday night. If you have a Facebook account, you'll find 3 or 4 postings here but you'll have to scroll down to find them because no one commented on the threads after early Friday:

I am heartbroken over the news today. I feel like I need to do something beyond just talking with my son and his friends about water safety.
I have an idea , but would need some help.
I want to offer a beach/water safety class for free to the kids 11 and older of rogers park. To encourage them to come we would offer them a coupon to a local business for a free ice cream or something , if they complete the class and pass a quiz.
I could teach and design the class, with help from lifeguards or some other knowledgable person.
We would need a place for the class, and local businesses to donate.
What do you think? Can we do this?

  • JeanneRP, this is an excellent idea. I suggest all school age children be included. Children need to understand facts about Lake Michigan and water safety at a young age. The junior life guard program at Loyola is for children 8 and up.
