Rogers Park in The Guardian

The Guardian recently featured a story about Rogers Park, by a Northestern U. professor who lives in the neighborhood.

https://www.theguardian.com/society/2017/apr/11/confessions-gentrification-race-rogers-park-chicago

    Confessions of a reluctant gentrifier
Shortly after we married, my husband and I moved to a part of Chicago that was once known as No Man's Land. At the turn of the century, this was the sparsely populated place between the cities of Chicago and Evanston, a place where the streets were unpaved and unlit.
    https://www.theguardian.com
  • Argumentum ad nauseum.

  • 9+ years old or not...I appreciated this article. Thanks for sharing. I do find it amusing that the author did eventually move to Evanston though. HA!

Sorry for the confusion as to day and time for us to have our first Spanish conversation group get off the ground. I've been trying to accommodate everyone on 2 different sites.
Let's meet this Friday at the Royal at 7pm. If we decide to make changes, por lo menos podemos discutir el sujeto en espanol!

Gracias por el interes, y nos vemos el viernes!

Alderman Moore on WTTW "Pitfalls of Participatory Budget" 4/24/17

According to Moore PB gives "taxpayers" the decision on how to spend their local community tax dollars. Conversely, Moore's election criteria allows children as young as 16 who are ineligible to vote in public elections, and adults otherwise ineligible to legally vote in public elections, for what ever reasons, to do so. Those ineligible to vote would also include illegal and documented aliens who are not necessarily "taxpayers," and certainly 16 year old children are not self supporting "taxpayers" as Moore stated. In effect, like his absurd extreme support of continued expansion of our social safety net, Moore's desire is to run his own personal popularity contest with non contributing factions of the community at the expense of taxpayers. I hope Bill Morton runs against him. At least he appears to genuinely care about the community which is more than I can say for Moore.

PS. I'm talking about real elections, not pretend ones. You know, like local ones, those designed to make you believe that your opinion matters when all the deals have already been made behind closed doors.

  • PB is still. Not. An. Election.

Gutters - Stolen Again! Be on look out for Silver MiniVan Lic Plate Z69 - 425

Gutters on my garage - recently replaced after they were stolen about a month ago - were stolen again last night (April 18, 2017)! Neighbors yelled at the middle-aged white guy, driving a silver Mini-van with IL Plate Z69 - 425 but he took-off after sticking the gutter in his vehicle. He only got one downspout off the garage and I imagine he will be prowling around again looking for more. This was in the 6600 block of N Glenwood (shared alley with 6600 block of Newgard). I know gutter theft was posted previously but I could not find it on EveryBlock this morning.

  • JMG

Our downspout was taken Wednesday afternoon between 2 and 5, other neighbors also had downspouts removed or damaged in the attempt.
I guess plastic gutters are the solution.

The Plastic Bag Ordinance is Working--Very, Very Well!

The number of plastic bags customers use is down 42 percent just since the new ordinance was introduced in February. Only 49% of customers are using plastic bags, down from 82% before. And the number of customers who bring their own re-usable bags to stores has tripled. Big success.

Chicago's 7-cents-a-bag tax on paper and plastic bags is driving consumer behavior in the right direction to reduce landfill costs: Both the number of disposable bags used and the number of shoppers willing to pay for them is way down. Before Feb.

Black cat with a small bit of white on his chest and no tags, outside in the 1100 block of Columbia. Very friendly. Any one know of a lost cat? Or simply a neighbor with a sweet outdoor cat?

  • Nan

Maggie- Please let your neighbor know that he/she's really putting Panthro at serious risk by letting him roam outdoors. So many dangers - including rat poison. Big cities are not a healthy or natural habitat for cats.

  • I know that, and you know that, but so many people just keep letting cats roam. There are of course the dangers you mentioned, but there is also the threat of being captured and tortured by sadistic freaks. A friend of mine learned that lesson the hard way. Something she will never get over. Anyway, yeah, I'll leave a note on the owners door. The owner is really nice and loves Panthro a lot.

So, last night (Monday the 17th) the No Rogers Park Target folks had themselves a little community get together led by the intrepid President of the Rogers Park Chamber of Commerce. A lavish taste of Rogers Park feast was had. Residents were empowered to draw their feelings.

Points were made. Many of them rather ridiculous and misleading, but made nevertheless. One of the biggest and most oft-cited reasons to be against the Target development is that it will include a grocery component which will be detrimental two of our local grocers- Morse Fresh Market and Devon Market.

One wonders why it is then that the RPCoC President hasn’t tried to spearhead any opposition to the Rogers Park Food Co-Op? By its very nature, a food co-op would be in much greater direct competition with our local grocers (seeking to have at least 1,200 members at the time of opening… members who presumably shop local now and would then no doubt spend much less money at Morse or Devon.)

So why have we heard nothing from the RPCoC about the Rogers Park Food Co-Op effort?

http://www.rogersparkfoodcoop.com/billmortonpromo

Oh. So I guess it’s okay to try to take business away from our existing local grocers, but only if you do it in a way that the “progressives” in Rogers Park approve of (or can potentially profit from, like Bill Morton would stand to do as a shareholder of the Rogers Park Co-Op.)

The proposed Target at that super busy intersection looks like a huge favor to Loyola and their students so that they don't have to travel further than across the street to do their shopping. It makes Loyola look like an even safer bet to tuition-paying parents if students are kept as close to campus as possible. Everybody else in RP seems to be just fine shopping at the Target on Peterson...

The food coop point is misleading -- students live here temporarily and usually don't connect with neighborhood concerns or initiatives all that much. That's true for students everywhere, so not a criticism of Loyola students. So the likelihood that they would be very active members of a neighborhood food coop is pretty slim. When I go to Devon Market, a big portion of their shoppers seem to be students, so I understand why the owner fears that the Target will be very bad for his business. Students will dash across the street to buy the basics at the Target and not walk an extra 3 or 4 blocks to buy milk.

IMHO that whole stretch of shops on Sheridan adjacent to Loyola already looks incredibly generic because many of them are franchises. The Target would fit right in and make it feel like any strip mall in America. Probably makes students feel like they're back home in suburbia...

Moah hit the nail on the head. Both guys from the chamber, the one with the tie and the one wearing the priest outfit, were more focused on throwing shade at the Alderman than they were on anything else. It smacked of amateur street theater mixed with grudge politics pure and simple. On a positive note, the Draw Your Dream thing was pretty novel. This might be the first time that Crayola drawings on colored paper will be submitted, along with signatures on petition sheets, to voice opposition to a proposed development. That was a cute touch.

So can anyone speculate as to why Rogers Park crime is down? We had a spike in shootings last summer, along with the rest of Chicago; and during the two or three years before that, gang activity sporadically spiked and raised alarm among residents. Over the last decade, residents have regularly expressed a lot of concern about violent crime in particular. But roughly since last September, the ward has been incredibly quiet (almost no shootings, and no homicides), during a year in which violent crime was up for Chicago as a whole. Social media sites in our ward show discussions about car break-ins, drain spouts being stolen, a creepy guy flashing passersby, etc., but shootings are no longer a focus.

The crime stats show that Rogers Park has reached a new historic low in violent crime as well as other crime categories (just check out the chart "Historic crime by month, 2001 to present" on the Tribune's crime page: http://crime.chicagotribune.com/chicago/community/rogers-park). Property crime last month rose 20 percent over last year, and quality-of-life crimes were up slightly as well, but these other two crime categories have also been steadily trending downward over the last fifteen years. We're at a point where crime levels in Rogers Park are no longer way out of line with neighboring wards (Edgewater and West Ridge): they're still higher, but not by statistically large levels. Has police work finally begun to do its job? Are gang members moving out of the ward? Are rising rental-real estate costs a contributing factor?

Just compare these numbers comparing crime reported at the post-millenial peak in March 2001 with the same reports for March 2017:

March 2001
Violent crimes: 60
Property crimes: 175
Quality-of-life crimes: 178

March 2017:
Violent crimes: 14 (down 76%)
Property crimes: 66 (down 62%)
Quality-of life crimes: 35 (down 80%)

Public library services will be limited April 13-21

I saw this news on DNA, but it was reported as a local issue in another neighborhood, and I haven't seen it reported on other news sites. I use the library a lot, so I thought it was important. For Chicago library users: from April 13 to 21, CPL is transitioning to a new system and won't be able to process holds or allow loans without a library card.

Gang rape. Gang torture. Posted on Facebook

Pretty disgusting that our city has the distinction of having animals posting torture and rape LIVE on Facebook.
2 of the city's most brutal crimes, streamed LIVE, just months apart.
People actually watched the live feed and did nothing.

  • I'm not sure that posting this to Rogers Park is an example of "good neighboring."

Hyde park Target gives $24k to local schools

As the president of the Rogers Park Chamber of Commerce continues to spread false information about the CHA Target proposal, items like this are good to keep in mind.

@RP guy - what does the Alderman have to say about the unfinished and un-repaired garage - this is an eyesore and not acceptable.

SmackDab's new location now open

Looks like Rogers Park's beloved and highly successful bakery SmackDab has opened its new home location at 6730 N. Clark, right below McDonalds. And it appears they are keeping their Glenwood location open as well.

Man creeped unto my porch

I'm lying in bed and cats look out window. Strange. Luckily we noticed. We caught someone hiding under our porch supposedly looking for a place to sleep. He def was scoping our porch and def intent to steal. Please be careful and make sure all back gates and doors are fully shut. We have no idea how he entered our back yard. Only two options: he jumped the fence or our fence was not fully shut. Just a FYI folks!

  • I had 50 gutter guard covers stolen from front yard close to front steps about a month ago. My solar lights stolen right out of ground about 3 months ago. Last week a metal cat with a welcome sign in it right off my porch. 2800 block of Estes.

Too Close to Home in Rogers Park

Armed immigration agents broke into a northwest-side home just before 6:30am on Monday morning and then shot the wrong man who, allegedly, was unarmed. The family has lived in the house for at least 30 years and all members are documented. This is too close to home here in Rogers Park. Attend community meetings and learn your rights.

Perhaps ICE didn't fully understand that in order to make America great and safe again the President will (perhaps if he's successful) ban Muslims from entering America, build a wall across the border with Mexico (paid for in part by cutting funds for educational programs) and deporting 11million (speculated) undocumented immigrants. As far as we know, unless there is another alternative truth floating around, the President's plan didn't include having ICE hunt down American citizens who might possibly be affiliated with gangs. Based on what is known so far, Mr. Torres and his family seem to have a legitimate grievance as well as Representative Gutierrez's support.

Who Opposes Affordable Housing?

Additional affordable housing has been proposed for Rogers Park but the local Chamber of Commerce opposes it. The Chamber's secretary, an alternative priest who preaches in in an Elmhurst Masonic Lodge and has a postal address near Gary, Indiana, speaks against affordable Rogers Park housing and calls the Alderman a "concubine of big box interests." https://www.facebook.com/bishop.wilkowski Why is the local chamber being supported by outside religious interests and opposing affordable housing in Rogers Park? Shouldn't the chamber support commerce and not oppose it? Has the local chamber gone roque?

Spanish classes in/near Rogers Park?

I am interested in learning Spanish, and am wondering if anyone knows of any local Spanish classes or teachers in the area.

Thanks!

  • Hey Barbara,

I really hate to do this; however, my supervisor just informed me that she wants me at a meeting in Springfield on Friday-- with me leaving on Thursday. I am going to need Wednesday to get everything together. Once again, I apologize for this cancelation-- but I just received this news a couple of hours ago.

  • Mornin' Anastasia...
Thanks for letting me know. Not to worry. Have a good trip, and we can get together another time.

Were the popcycle girls from Rogers-park?

The third judge, Jaye P. Morgan, would award them a 10, quipping, "Do you know? That's how I started." (She was rewarded with a popsicle from one of the girls before they left the stage.)

  • It this the only post or was the rest of the thread removed by the moderators? It made me look up the video of the Popsicle "Twins" (15/17) and the back story by Chuck Barris. Supposedly that "act" was cut before the Gong Show episode was shown here (or in the western time-zones). Memories...

  • Bruce_ because it was mistakenly posted to the wrong thre

I was chasing down a rumor they were from RO.
