Eric Vaughn Still Awaiting Trial 3 Years After Wil Lewis Murder

Appearantly crossing the "T's" and dotting the "I's" is a lengthy process. Gang affiliated, violent habitual criminal Eric Vaughn still has not gone to trial for the Murder of Wil Lewis for which he was responsible. Let's hope that our criminal justice system is merely p being prudent in its prosecution rather than dropping the ball in procrastination and that this filth will never breath air as a free man again in his lifetime.

Need some tax advice

My husband passed away in late 2014 and he had a couple of credit cards and at that thime those companies told me at the time I was NOT responsible for repaying because I was not a co-signer. Now i have received 1099's showing those written-off balances as income. Because we were married, do I have to claim those write-offs as income? Really need a tax professional or lawyer to weigh in on this. Thanks!

  • dj long time RP home owner

An update. One fact I inadvertently omitted was that those 1099's were addressed to my late husband (he died 2 1/2 yrs ago). There was no estate, no assets to distribute. I consulted my lawyer and he said that since they were addressed to my late husband to ignore them, but to hold on to them.

  • Wazzup not available

you got the advantages of those purchases - the least you can do is pay the income taxes. the vendor gets stiffed - but the taxpayers shouldn't have to pay for your enjoyment of your husbands purchases. He was your partner and you agreed to "for better or worse". You filed jointly -so you pay jointly.

Gunshots in Rogers Park.

Anyone else hear gunshots around 1:35am this morning near Jonquil or Juneway? There were 4-5 shots in a row.

  • I heard that too, around 2:05am. I lived on Sheridan but my room is facing east lake terr and Rogers. I thought the shots came from East lake Terr. Anyone knows where that happened?

  • Yeah, same alley as above. Maybe this is weird, but it almost sounded like someone was bored and decided to unload a clip, because there were two slow shots, a pause, and then six more shots in succession. I didn't hear any voices or anything afterward.

Both items are in pristine condition. I purchased the medical table some years ago from a used furniture place and used it for craft making purposes. The file cabinet is taupe in color, purchased from Office Depot for household rather than industrial use.

*** To my surprise, I was informed by the Salvation Army pickup service: 1) NO medical items, 2) NO office furniture, including (but not limited to) chairs and desks, 3) NO medical furniture, including (but not limited to) chairs and stools, 4) NO bookcases that should be affixed to a wall 5) NO books other than novels, 6) NOT PERMITTED to pickup items in an unfinished basement area, e.g., boiler, overhead exposed pipes.

Thanks in advance.

Little dog loose near Ashland and Jarvis

Hello RPers,

My daughter saw this dog running loose with no collar while walking home from the Jarvis red line at about 1:15 this afternoon.

The dog was first spotted headed south on Ashland. It turned and headed east on Sherwin, where she lost sight of it.

She said he was about the size of a chihuahua. You can get an idea of his size from the pic.

I hope someone recognizes this little one. The pup seemed pretty skittish and was in and out of the street.

Loud bass cars a health hazzard to everyone and nearby motorist.

3:30 pm 5.3.14 and driving at touhy and western a 1997 brown GMC yukon with tinted window was blaring his aftermarket woofer at the stop sign that my car is shaking and can't hear my own stereo inside the car. After that short stop, I feel like I'm underwater or at high elevation and have loss my hearing. It's 9:17 pm now and my ear is still aching. Police should stop these people. That guy should pay for medical checkup that I may need. Can you stop people with loud annoying bass from driving?

What's the deal?

I've only lived in RP for four years, so I guess I missed some of the drama. I'm perplexed by the hate toward the RP Chamber. I understand that many "progressives" don't care for Chambers of Commerce. But the vitriol here (and throwing a brick through a window) is on a different level. What's the history between you folks?

  • Equally wonderful that you and Live seem to want to compete with him for the title.

Who's Really the Ones Selling "Hate"?

Our local administration is circulating emails, flyers, etc with the slogan "Hate Has No Home Here" which are an attack upon the Trump administration. While the local administration, and many local Democrat officials support irresponsible government spending at the expense of the working families of our communities, they attack any attempt at responsible management practices and label that which they themselves hate as "Haters." Just another disingenuous agenda by the irresponsible faction which is fostering a welfare economy which will eventually have a major collapse.

Dear Neighbor, You may have noticed signs with the message "Hate Has No Home Here" posted inwindows, yards and car bumpers throughout Rogers Park. These popular signs serve as a counter to the divisive and harmful rhetoric and policies emanating from the current occupant of the White House and a declaration of our community's solidarity with those have been the object of hateful speech and conduct.

  • The 49th Ward is one of the more liberal wards in the city, so I think that Moore is pretty safe politically.

Hello all,

On Wednesday I did my laundry and went upstairs during the wash cycle (30 minutes). When I came back down I switched my laundry and noticed two items were missing, but didn't think much of it. Later, after I folded my clean clothes I noticed that two pairs of lulu lemon leggings were missing. The next day I also noticed that my denim jacket was gone.

I have been in contact with my leasing agency (I live in a BJB property) and even though they had a camera in the hall they can't pinpoint who did it. I'm extremely frustrated because this has never happened before, but recently we have had a bunch of package - and apparently now laundry - thefts. I can't afford to repurchase these items, which were originally gifts, and want to file a police report even though I doubt it would do anything.

Any advice, common experiences, etc.? It would really help if anyone else can shed some light on this. I don't trust anyone in my building after this and its maddening that I can't just go door to door and get to the bottom of it.

Thank you.

  • d3 NOH

Two party consent was about the audio though. That's no longer an issue but nonetheless I said no audio for a reason. The camera laws still do not allow a camera in a changing room or locker room. Not an issue here. Illinois law prohibits you from installing a camera in someone's residence but specifically names the laundry room as not part of their residence. It would be legal.

we have a camera in the laundry room - as it is also package drop off - we find that security addition comforting.

I wish continued success for growling rabbit in their new location and success for the new businesses that open in the space at Sheridan and Lunt.

The GR certainly had a lot of customers who were treated right, but not if they lived close to it. I live in the same building that the GR was in, lived there 23 yrs. I would go into the GR usually with other neighbors when there were no other customers to order coffee. The owner would be sitting chatting with a friend. After waiting for a cup of coffee for 30 minutes, we would have to remind them of our orders when there were no other customers. That happened three times, and the owner sat across from us and did nothing. The fourth time I went there, they tried to get me to pay twice after I gave them a nice tip, and then they yelled through the crowded restaurant twice, "Did he pay?" The friend I met there said it was the worst service he had ever seen. And again, no response from the owner on Yelp.

The idea of implanting chips in human beings is controversial, even though there have been some experiments. But there are numerous rfid tracking devices these people can wear, like ankle braclets.

you would think the moderators would get the idea they are needing some training on how to properly moderate -

the implanted GPS has some merit for those that could become lost - I remember a demented Grandmother who wondered outside without clothes - took a while for the police to match the missing report - a GPS device would have identified her right off.

On February 22nd, this cat followed me to my back door step in Rogers Park on W. North Shore Ave. It clearly has a home because it was extremely friendly and even jumped on my lap as soon as I sat down. However, it began to suffer from seizures. Because it was so late at night and most shelters were closed, I contacted animal control to be sure it was somewhere where it could be attended to properly and be checked for a microchip, as well as other health issues. My neighbors confirmed that the cat had been hanging around the apartment building the past couple of days but no one in the building knew who the owner was.

The cat is now posted on the CACC's lost pet page under ID#A162114.

Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions (or even to let me know that you found him/her!). However, the cat is no longer in my care so for direct reach, please contact Chicago Animal Control and Care at (312) 747-1406.

  • Thank goodness! Hopefully he won't get out again, and it was just a horrible mistake. Glad he's safe now.

  • I felt terrible having to call CACC, but being so late at night and my cats reacting negatively to him being in our apartment, I was afraid he might continue to have seizures without someone there or wander off to a different location altogether.

Glad he had a microchip and wasn't gone too long from his family!

I'm happy about their Clark St. location, since it's within walking distance of me and because more development on Clark is always great. However, I do think it's a bit of a risk for them, since they won't benefit from a lot of other surrounding businesses attracting customers. But there are some plusses: they'll be just down the street from the library and across the street from Fine Wines & Spirits (RP's nicest, chic-est liquor store). And who knows, they might get more drive-by customers on Clark than they do from pedestrians around Morse. Smack Dab has gotten great city-wide press, so their name recognition is on its way up. And maybe the rent on Clark was low enough for the location to serve as a cheap production center serving a growing number of small retail locations around the city.

  • It's good to see a legitimate bar finally going in on Morse Ave.

Our perceptions of relative personal safety and risk are a little absurd sometimes.
(The sad thing is that if you're a white person, your risk of being a violent crime victim is virtually zero in both wards. It's the minority residents who are bearing the brunt of crime in this city. Overall, crime is at historic low levels around the nation. Even with the spike in violent crime here in Chicago over the last year, Chicago is still nowhere nearly as bad as it was in the early nineties.)

right an it is down right
    scary!😰😰😰
    When people lack the care
    by shooting you an
    Causing injury or death, it
    just becomes a blood sport.
    some of these people have
    Lost their minds, it has
    become a ritual, this thing
    call shooting.😰😰😰
    Chicago needs an serious
    Intervention.

2 men charged with breaking into health food store: Evanston police

This might be the explanation of the helicopters and other shoutings mentioned in another thread. One of the burglars is a young local kid.

    I know.
I didn't really think they were after ginger root...
It was a play on words since about the last place any person ought to rob would be a health food store.
I think the only thing more not worth the time is robbing parking meters (since most are credit cards...)

  • @Orange, Now that sounds
    alright....

    Peace😌

Lack of Trash Cans

Walking down Lunt from Metra Stop to the Red Line. Not one public, outdoor trash can. How do we get this fixed? Is there a city website to ask for this on?

  • I just Googled "chicago everyblock north of Howard" and there are several scary posts.

  • d3 NOH

Rogerparker couldn't sound less educated about the neighborhood if s/he tried.

Oh, what a cutie! Too bad I already have two rambunctious cats who might either be endangered by (or maybe endanger!) a dog.

"Aging in place" aims to aid seniors remain in their homes

"Aging in place" is a relatively new organizing principle built around seniors who aid other seniors in their communities to remain in their homes as they encounter inevitable obstacles -- physical, financial and psychological.

Here's a good report on the effort to date in the Edgewater area, which includes the 49th and 50th wards, written by 50th Ward Follies:

"Aging in place" is a relatively new organizing principle built around seniors who aid other seniors in their communities to remain in their homes as they encounter inevitable obstacles -- physical, financial and psychological.

Here's a good report on the effort to date in the Edgewater area, which includes the 49th and 50th wards, written by 50th Ward Follies:

Do you know about the World Health Organization's attempt to ensure a safe, healthy, active aging process for adults aged 60 and over? Do you know that Chicago is a part of this movement?

In the summer of 2012 Mayor Emanuel registered Chicago in WHO's Age-Friendly Cities organization, and the City conducted a survey of older adults to assess their needs and desires. The vision for Chicago includes a senior village in every ward. However, the organization in formation on the north side currently includes residents of four wards (40, 48, 49, and 50). Though now known as Edgewater Village, it has been suggested the name be changed to be more inclusive; discussions are ongoing.

The Village is being set up and run by older adults (senior citizens, if you will, I personally dislike the term) who meet monthly to plan an organization that meets their needs and includes their interests.

Edgewater Village is concentrating on encouraging north side residents to engage with one another socially, and its Programming Committee is actively seeking members and ideas to accomplish this goal. Other committees in formation include Communications, Employment, Finance, Housing, Social Services, and Volunteers.

Edgewater Village is not an advocacy organization and has no political aims or affiliations.

The next general meeting will be held on February 22 at 1:00 p.m. The group meets at the Broadway Armory, 5917 North Broadway (at Thorndale). Meetings last about two hours.

Rogers Park is a great neighborhood full of interesting people and friendly faces. One person who makes Rogers Park great is Arlene (a.k.a Lisa) Barry, our local Streetwise vendor who has stood in front of Morse Market for 4.5 years now selling magazines and offering a warm smile to passersby.

Maggie, I just saw your new message on the GoFundMe page. I'm not willing to comment there because the site requires people to give access to their Facebook friends in order to post a comment. That's intrusive. This is shared on the Rogers Park Neighborhood News Facebook page. One of the comments there is "Cabrini Green Legal Aid may be able to assist with expungement or sealing of criminal record."

  • @Helen: Thank you! I just visited their website and it looks very promising. I will call them tomorrow.
