Description of the guy is black male, slim, about 6ft tall wearing grey hoodie (that was pulled over face so couldn't get face or age description) and long pair of jeans. He opened a bottle of tonic water I had in the garage and drank from it. I told the police this when I filed the report thinking maybe they could get DNA and see who the guy is.....but they were not interested in this.

And come to think of it, had Bill in Rogers Park run into the crook in his garage and the crook had a gun, this could have had a different ending. Then I'm sure the Police would have been all over the bottle of tonic. At least he filed the police report, reported it etc which is more than I can say for the people who say "did anyone hear gun shots" and don't call 911.

We seem to have spate of car and Garage break-ins in the neighborhood. This week in alley behind me I found envelope with car registration info, etc. I called the number found in the envelope and it was a cab driver who said his car had been broken into this week on the 1400 block of Arthur. Another neighbor in 1300 block of Albion said she saw 6ft, AfricanAmerican late teen early 20s wearing red and yellow hoodie checking out cars in middle of weekday afternoon. She lost sight of him and then saw him ransacking Neighbor's car. Police called but offender got away. And one additional note from my original post: Chicago Police detective did follow-up with me re my break-in. No suspect yet. So if you see guys checking out cars on the street and looking inside the vehicles, testing doors, etc. call 911 to get police presence.

In June, I posted about a lost dog and received many kind comments from EB readers. We eventually located the original owner who had adopted the dog from Chicago Animal Care and Control but who had been forced to give the dog away when moving to a rental home that would not allow dogs. The dog was subsequently lost and I could not track down its most recent owner. We fell in love with the dog and decided to keep it. According to the original owner, his name was Cody and he was about to turn two in August.

Two weeks ago, Cody became very lethargic and lost his appetite. We took him to the vet the next day when we realized that he was not just under the weather. He went to the vet on Tuesday, was admitted for tests and died of acute liver and kidney failure overnight on Friday. By Monday, lab results had all been returned with the confirmation that Cody died of leptospirosis.

I am posting this because leptospirosis is a bacteria that is passed in the urine of an infected dog (or rodent) into puddles and then the puddle water is drunk by another animal. The incubation period can vary from several days to several weeks. We will never know if Cody drank from an infected puddle while he was lost and on the street, or if he got it from a wading pool at a dog park. We just want to make sure that dog owners are careful to make sure your pet does not drink from puddles when outside.

Vets are seeing a spike in lepto cases in Chicago, possibly because of the rise in the rat population. It should be noted that, while it is exceptionally rare, lepto can be picked up by little kids who play in puddles with infected water and then put their hands into their mouths. Cody was a great dog and we miss him, but more importantly, we want to be sure that other people don't lose their pets as well.

A call was placed to 911, but as usual they are extremely slow to ensure safety. This was around 7 am. He got out of his car and began waving his arms, prior to driving in a reckless manor.

I quickly overheard a street conversation months ago that was filled with a lot of suggestion and knowing arched eyebrows. It seemed as if some guy was letting another know bikes had become available at "the same place."

I still wonder what it was all about and if this was a resale network of stolen bikes.

No, I didn't call the cops because it all happened quickly and on the streets.

In order to let a dog off leash, at minimum, the dog must be able to come reliably while there are distractions, outdoors. Most dogs are not trained to this degree. Some dogs naturally stick with their owners but not all.

Polite society dictates that we don't invade other people's personal space, or worse, let our dogs jump all over someone or run at them aggressively. Can you guarentee that your dog will be under your verbal control? If not, your dog belongs on a leash.

Its not a matter of who is right. We already know that dogs are not allowed on the beach., Make sure your dog is well behaved or on a leash. It only takes one overconfident person who does not know what his dog is capable of to ruin it for all dogs.

Mad aboud RP, I'd be happy to give you some tips. There are no stubborn dogs. Its just that you haven't found a common language.

Buzzing / Humming / Droning Noise at Fargo & Sheridan?

Does anyone else notice a pretty pervasive buzzing / humming / droning noise at the corner of Fargo and Sheridan?

This seems to go on at all hours of the day and night, and although it gets drowned out a bit when traffic is heavy, it's especially disturbing later in the evening when the rest of the neighborhood is quiet.

Just wanted to see if anyone else has experienced this and if there are any recommendations as to what can be done. And if anyone has any ideas as to where exactly it might be coming from.

Thanks!

Howard "L" Station Cleaning

I was wondering if anyone else noticed how nasty the Howard station is lately? I know it's NEVER spotless and many "L" stations never are but I feel like it's been in rare form. Everything is filthy and smells of urine among other things.

Does anyone know if the cleaning has been halted or lessened due to the budget issues? Is there anything that we can do to address this? It's terrible that people have to travel through this day in and day out.

  • so humor me, as of today if you are standing on the platform looking west you will see a years worth of trash directly 2 feet under the people you see. now really, what is so acceptable about that?

  • Agreed. However, I saw some progress on cleaning. The rock salt leftover from last winter was actually cleaned and some of the urine spots were at least mopped.

It's hooker season again

They seemed to disappear as winter arrived. Just noticed they are drifting back into my neighborhood again. Two of them were actually sitting on the back steps (leading to the basement) of my building just before noon on July 4. I came back a couple hours later and there was a wet nap and an unused condom in a wrapper lying on the steps. Nice. Saw another one ambling down my street with a couple of male friends the next morning just before 6:00 a.m.

My question is, what's the most effective way of getting these, ahem, ladies out? Police? (311? 911?) Alderman? Any other suggestions?

Park District Water Fountain Lead Contamination in Rogers Park

More than 100 Chicago Park District drinking fountains across the city have been running nonstop for months because tests showed these fountains deliver dangerously high lead-levels when they are returned to manual push-button operation. Six more fountains continued to deliver exceedingly high levels of lead even under continuous flow conditions and have been shut off. Fountains run continuously at Juneway Beach and Loyola Park (3 fountains). This results in a loss of about 2,300 gallons of drinking water each day. Touhy Park has at least one fountain completely shut down. Full article at: https://www.wbez.org/shows/curious-city/many-chicago-parks-fountains-too-dangerous-to-turn-off/3ef1299f-d5f2-46b3-9314-5a96879f7971?utm_source=facebook.com&utm_medium=social&utm_campaign=npr&utm_term=nprnews&utm_content=20170729

Many Chicago Parks Fountains Too Dangerous To Turn Off
More than 100 Chicago Park District drinking fountains have been running nonstop for months - their on and off buttons intentionally disabled by the district. This week, park officials revealed why. They made the move, they said, because tests showed these fountains deliver dangerously high lead-levels when they are returned to manual push-button operation.

Drones in my neighborhood?

I need an outsiders perspective here. Would you support consumer Drones flying over your neighborhood in Rogers Park capturing footage of illegalities going on in areas known for crime? Seriously, I'm considering a consumer Drone with the capacity to fly a few miles and capture ultra high resolution video of illegalities in 'hotspot" areas. I'm leaning towards the DF-X6 model (see attached). All this would be in an effort to turn around the South Side community I live in so that the quality of life is improved. What say you? Is this a crazy Buck Rogers ambition here or is it something you would support?

Off leash dogs on the beach

There seem to be a lot of dog owners allowing their dogs off leash in public places like the beach. Just yesterday I could count 4 different owners letting their dogs run amok on the sand during my morning walk. One of them even did it's business and the owner didn't clean up. This is illegal, right?

  • Can't understand how Lib, who's only post ever was about illegal drinking on the beach, would thumb down my comment. Double standard on laws much, Lib?

  • Pedro G. Hillary lost, hoorah!

At what time was that, Donald? Because I was there yesterday with my dog (no leash same as always) and I didn't see any cop.
I'm going to the beach in a few minutes.

Illinois Lawmakers Override Governor, Pass Budget For First Time In 2 Years
Lawmakers in Illinois have enacted a budget for the first time in more than two years, overriding a veto by Gov. Bruce Rauner and overcoming a last-minute delay at the Capitol. The crucial override vote was delayed after authorities received a report of possible hazardous materials, prompting an investigation, The Associated Press reports.

You're right. I blame Rauner for more than 2 years without a budget and numerous credit downgrades. Any time he wants to actually do something is fine with me.

  • It doesn't make sense to obsess over the mistakes "of the last 30 years." Focus on the politicians who are in power right now and what they can, can't, aren't or should be doing: Madigan and Rauner.

Sure, the last 30 years was a period during which Democrats in the Assembly made a lot of stupid moves--but more than one Republican governor did as well. In fact, it was Republican Gov. James Thompson who made the first fatal decision leading to the current pension crisis (1989) and then Republican Gov. James Edgar was the one who cast the second fatal blow (in 1994) and then piled on with a series of horrible blunders. In both cases, these governors were working with the Assembly, but they were the governors responsible for the decisions that were made and they were proposing them.

In fact, the entire pension crisis has unfolded exclusively from political decisions that were made under the two Republican governors in question. The state was set during the 1990s. (There's a good argument to be made that worse things tend to happen when the governor and the Assembly in IL are controlled by different parties.)

It's national ice cream day!

Most of our neighborhood stores and fast food restaurants are offering special deals on this treat!

  • Pedro G. Hillary lost, hoorah!

Rob and FGFM, same as you denied the victory of our leader, President Trump, last year, now you deny the vanquishing of Obama's legacy.
You guys know that Obamacare is dead. You will be very upset when it gets buried. "Oh, so many people will lose their insurance!", a phony, expensive insurance paid by the penalties from people who want nothing to do with it.
I thought Democrats loved civil liberties, maybe not.

It has been about two months since this incident.
I was standing the platform. Two teen and one younger child were only others there.

The two tried to distract me so that youngster could take wallet from back pocket. They tried several times.

I pressed assistance needed on platform button twice with no response.

I finally used my cane to get them to move so I could get down to attendant.
I ran down steps screaming and afraid I would fall.

She called police. The perpetrators took incoming train to howard. The police apprehended them.

I took next train to howard and saw police and perpetrators. I went over and officially identified them and they were taken away.

What I leaned:
My wallet is big and just fits in pocket.
I have chain on wallet to belt. This saved me losing wallet and contents.

Pressing the assistance button did nothing. The attendant ignored it twice.

It was not until I got to booth. She could not hear me through sealed/locked booth.

She did call police and found out theses three had been riding the trains to stations far apart and doing same thing

I now will only go on platform just before trains arrive. I am now wary if by my self.

I rely on CTA I no longer can afford a car in the city. I travel early mornings to late evenings often to get to doctors a 2 1/2 hour ride. I also use it to shop or visit friends around town.

Instead of the semi-helpful heaters having real emergency assistance from attendant or cameras on every platform would make a safer environment.

If you see something specious use the button. I did not report lack of response. I was too upset. If no answer by attendant report I did not as I was trying to get to howard and identify perps which I did.

Call our alderman. I was too shaken to think clearly.

  • The attendant at Jarvis not only does nothing but encouraged his friends to cause trouble.
This is the guy usually working Sunday with long braided hair.
He could care less what crimes are being committed.
We had an encounter and it turned out to be a FRIEND of the attendant working just described.

As someone who uses a cane and travels 2.5 hrs to see doctors, you should look into the Pace Bus ParaTransit service, which lets you schedule a trip with special route pickups and drop-offs. They will also pick you up when you are ready to return home. All trips must be scheduled in advance.

This service is designed for senior riders and riders with disabilities.
There are no other eligibility restrictions I know of, but you need to apply so you can be certified as disabled by the RTA.

To the best of my knowledge a trip costs a little bit more than a regular CTA trip.

Read more about the Pace service here and be sure to follow links for more info:
    http://www.pacebus.com/sub/paratransit/

Read the Guide to learn how to get into the system and how it all works:

    Good luck.

Over 400 residents voted this weekend at the Art Round Trip Festival to select the logo design that will adorn some of our new bike racks in high traffic areas. Four proposed designs were up for final consideration.

Rogers Park artist Robert Hansen's depiction of the sun rising over Lake Michigan (below) garnered the most votes.

New bike racks were one of the projects approved by the voters in previous 49th Ward participatory budgeting elections and I arranged with the City to set aside a portion of the money allocated to include a distinct logo design for some of the racks in high traffic locations. The four finalists were among over 40 proposed bike rack designs submitted for consideration. All the artists were required to either live in Rogers Park or have a studio located within Rogers Park.

A committee of representatives of the Participatory Budgeting Leadership Committee and the Rogers Park Arts Alliance narrowed down the submissions to four finalists.

To view the four proposed designs up for consideration and the votes they received, visit:

http://www.ward49.com/site/epage/155293_322.htm

If need be, the winning design will be modified slightly to ensure the functionality of the bike racks.

Congratulations to winning artist, Robert Hansen, and many thanks to the over 40 artists who submitted proposals to the competition. It's a testament to the vibrancy of Rogers Park's artistic community.

The PB Leadership Committee decided that the designated funds will be used to manufacture “custom racks” that include an original Rogers Park inspired design within a standard staple rack. In addition, traditional staple racks of a matching color will be purchased and installed. A beachscape-inspired design by a local artist was selected in a community-wide vote. The racks have been scheduled to be manufactured and installed in 2016.

Joan: I'll tell him you said so! He's like the Houdini of cats, but not my cat technically.

Catherine: Yes, I will encourage this. But, chips only help if captured and scanned at vet or shelter. Fist step is to act quickly to locate before much time passes.

    Thanks all.

I would have called 911, but there was already a strong-- and odd– – police presence on Bosworth. On Bosworth and North Shore, a police car with a female officer driving was stopped at the stop sign. At least four cars were lined up in back of her, no one moving or honking. I kept wondering why no one was passing her.

As I walked further down the street, two mail police officers were walking around. Both of them were wondering aloud why none of the cars were passing her, too. They were speculating that the drivers have been drinking and didn't want to pass a police officer. So, that was three police officers out on the street – – for what reason?

After the gunshot, I saw two cars racing west on Pratt, squealing around the corner onto Ashland.

Anyway– – just wondered if anyone else heard the noise?

We got the name of the original owner of the rabies tag but, although his dog is missing, it is an entirely different dog. The tag has evidently been passed along with the collar and we now have no leads. We will also see if there is a microchip and pursue that lead but wanted to get news out through social media.
