It's Party Time in Rogers Park

This coming weekend it's the 16th annual Glenwood Ave. Arts Fest with more than 100 artists displaying their creations, 3 music stages, and lots of food tents, mostly from local restaurants. There's no admission fee and no one asks for a donation. Check it out here:

  • Hey Helen thanks for getting back to me really appreciate it.
We heard from a friend that there was no food last night so we decided to wait for today. Hope everyone has a good time!

Right, the food tents weren't open last night, but there was plenty of food inside. We went to the alderman's Follow Me on Friday at Empirical Brew Pub then stuck around and ordered food. Great place. Check it out if you haven't been there yet.

Park District Water Fountain Lead Contamination in Rogers Park

More than 100 Chicago Park District drinking fountains across the city have been running nonstop for months because tests showed these fountains deliver dangerously high lead-levels when they are returned to manual push-button operation. Six more fountains continued to deliver exceedingly high levels of lead even under continuous flow conditions and have been shut off. Fountains run continuously at Juneway Beach and Loyola Park (3 fountains). This results in a loss of about 2,300 gallons of drinking water each day. Touhy Park has at least one fountain completely shut down. Full article at: https://www.wbez.org/shows/curious-city/many-chicago-parks-fountains-too-dangerous-to-turn-off/3ef1299f-d5f2-46b3-9314-5a96879f7971?utm_source=facebook.com&utm_medium=social&utm_campaign=npr&utm_term=nprnews&utm_content=20170729

Many Chicago Parks Fountains Too Dangerous To Turn Off
More than 100 Chicago Park District drinking fountains have been running nonstop for months - their on and off buttons intentionally disabled by the district. This week, park officials revealed why. They made the move, they said, because tests showed these fountains deliver dangerously high lead-levels when they are returned to manual push-button operation.

Hi, Sorry but I forgot that not everyone would see the reply to Nan which I sent out within an hour of Little Boy returning. I got a call from my neighbor across the street saying he was there. I had had 3 other calls which turned out to be other black cats. But when I saw his back shaved leg, I knew it was him. His cone and collar were off. He's in good condition, just thinner. He's beginning to act like himself. At first he just slept a lot. I want to thank everyone from the bottom of my heart. The people of a Rogers Park are incredible. Such caring people! This correspondence, the neighbors, merchants, alderman, Chamber...we are thrilled that Little Boy is back, and so glad we moved here. Thank you all for your concern & prayers.

Lost cat (Little Boy) found!

I posted this in the existing thread, but it's not sending me an email notification that a new comment was posted, so just in case it's not notifying anyone else - I'm posting it here.

I guess Judy's so happy and relieved - she hasn't been back here to update, so I hope she won't mind if I report that Little Boy is back home - and in pretty good condition! I know (like me) many of you take a very personal interest when pets are missing. This poor guy who was recovering from surgery was gone for two weeks, so this is an especially happy (and lucky) ending.

Welcome home, LB!

Illinois Lawmakers Override Governor, Pass Budget For First Time In 2 Years
Lawmakers in Illinois have enacted a budget for the first time in more than two years, overriding a veto by Gov. Bruce Rauner and overcoming a last-minute delay at the Capitol. The crucial override vote was delayed after authorities received a report of possible hazardous materials, prompting an investigation, The Associated Press reports.

You're right. I blame Rauner for more than 2 years without a budget and numerous credit downgrades. Any time he wants to actually do something is fine with me.

  • It doesn't make sense to obsess over the mistakes "of the last 30 years." Focus on the politicians who are in power right now and what they can, can't, aren't or should be doing: Madigan and Rauner.

Sure, the last 30 years was a period during which Democrats in the Assembly made a lot of stupid moves--but more than one Republican governor did as well. In fact, it was Republican Gov. James Thompson who made the first fatal decision leading to the current pension crisis (1989) and then Republican Gov. James Edgar was the one who cast the second fatal blow (in 1994) and then piled on with a series of horrible blunders. In both cases, these governors were working with the Assembly, but they were the governors responsible for the decisions that were made and they were proposing them.

In fact, the entire pension crisis has unfolded exclusively from political decisions that were made under the two Republican governors in question. The state was set during the 1990s. (There's a good argument to be made that worse things tend to happen when the governor and the Assembly in IL are controlled by different parties.)

Grill Inn closed?

Does anyone know why the Grill Inn closed? It never seemed that busy, but I assumed they had enough take out and delivery business to make it. I'm happy that Empirical Brew Pub has opened, and even Dunkin' Donuts, but we seem to have lost more businesses than we've gained on Morse over the last few years. It's looking pretty dismal. I'd love to know what efforts are being made to make the area more attractive for new business.

  • Certain liberal types are pandering to the criminal element who refuse to work, ignoring the prostitutionalization of our neighborhoods and wasting public taxations by supporting the socially insolent. The criminal justice system coddles the underbelly without the execution of our civil liberties. All at the behest of the politicians who impose political correctiveness on honest citizens instead of doing their jobs for them.

  • My apolgizations! Posted this to the wrong thread!

What to expect if no Illinois state budget deal is reached
As Illinois hurtles toward a third year without a budget agreement, the state's political leaders have managed to accumulate a series of notable, if inglorious, distinctions - the lowest credit rating of any state, just a whisker above junk status; a growing pile of unpaid bills that now stands at more than $14.5 billion; and a yearly population decline that is the highest of any state in the nation.

Land Values in Rogers Park

Hi. I'm trying to learn what the current median cost per buildable square foot of land is in Rogers Park. My particular interest is in land utilized for single-family or two-flat residential use. My online searching seems to produce information pertaining primarily to the Chicago Loop. Does anybody have that information, or perhaps any ideas of where I might be able to find it? (A relative has inherited a property in need of substantial work, and is trying to decide what to do with it.)

Thanks in advance for any guidance.

Summer is is great time for hanging out by the lake in a hammock with a beer and a sketchbook.

And at least some beaches have wifi now so you can check to see what your friends are eating on facebook.

Omar, the dividing line between Leone Park and Loyola Park is Touhy so I assume that holds true for the beaches too.

Denzel Burke & Michael Phillips Sentencing

I haven't heard anything about the prosecution of these two criminals in some time. I genuinely believe that a fair disposition of their case would be to serve a mandatory 20 years in the USMC or a mandatory term of 20 years in prison. If they would choose for the military, they would be on felony probation for that entire 20 year term, and should they withdraw from the service or be less than honorably discharged the balance of that time would be subject to be seven in incarceration. There is absolutely no excuse for their actions
