Ravenswood Manor Garage Sale

Gee, it would have been nice if the organizers had provided maps to those of us who made our the garage sale donations, signed up with the Alderman's office, etc. People had no clue our alley was included north of Wilson. What did our donations go for since we had to do our own postings?

Crime in Albany Park

I moved to this area about two years ago and I might have to move cause the crime is getting worst. Why did some kids come on private property and just bust a mans new car windows out for no reason at all. It was a camera video of this crime and the police will be going over to the local schools in the area to ID these kids.

  • That's sad that people are scared of change. I have a house on the westside that I purchased brand new but had to flee cause of the horrible crime. I will be moving to round lake at the end of the year cause enough is enough.

It breaks my heart ... but I have to admit that AP is no longer my home. I lived there for 45 years and saw SO many different changes, some good, some not so good. The past few years have not been good and it pains me that the place that I called home for most of my life has changed so much. We are losing our home due to foreclosure, but making the decision to leave wasn't as difficult as it would have been a few years ago. We battled gangs and all kinds of problems during all of these years, but because of the increasing violence and change in atmosphere, we felt best to give in and get out. Fifteen years (or so) ago, we battled gangs and won. When apartment buildings switched to condos, the neighborhood became the "must move to" area in Chicago. The diversity was the most wonderful thing I could have given my children. But now? The elementary school that my children attended has gone from exemplary to the bottom of the CPS list. My beater of a cargo van was broken into - they tried to hotwire the wothless hunk of metal!!! The sirens that we have heard nightly have made us uneasy. Our alleys are dark, filthy and frightful. These new gangs and the vandalism that is prominent is like nothing we have ever experienced. We have heard that there are more than 4,000 foreclosures in AP (not sure if those statistics are correct, however). So many houses are up for sale and/or stand empty. We have seen many of the condos revert back to apartments. "For sale" signs have changed back to "for rent". The value of our house was almost halved after the economic crisis a few years back. Is it any wonder that the area is in chaos? :(

Not cool to protest at Mayor's home

I've heard that some protestors are planning on picketing at the Mayor's home in Ravenswood Manor. I think this is awful. You can exercise your right to free speech where the Mayor WORKS. But if you get a large group of people protesting outside people's homes, it begins to look more like intimidation. The Mayor lives in a regular neighborhood, not a gated community. He does not have a mansion. I wish the protestors would reconsider their strategy.

You still refuse to address my point. Taxes are assessed on profits (income less expenses). US workers increase expenses and so lower your taxable income.

I can domicile my corporation in Bermuda and create five jobs (all expat lawyers) there while employing twenty thousand people in the U.S. just to avoid U.S. taxes. I don't need to offshore any existing jobs to domicile somewhere else. In fact, this is exactly how Accenture (now domiciled in Ireland, but HQed in NY) started. Now we can talk about corporate domiciling and relative tax rates, but you need to understand what, exactly, taxable revenue is.

As you can see here: http://www.gao.gov/new.items/d08957.pdf real tax rates are well below the nominal tax rate. My own corporation doesn't pay a 35% rate on revenue *or* our raw profits.

I'm thrilled that you linked to the OECD data site! As you can see from this xls: http://www.oecd.org/dataoecd/28/31/49069402.xls in 2009, the United States was the third *lowest* in tax revenues as a percentage of GDP ahead of only Chile and Mexico. If you ever get a chance to play around with their database, I highly recommend you do so, it's great fun.

As you can see here: http://www.taxanalysts.com/www/features.nsf/Articles/FE9DCA58402875D7852573680064DA50?OpenDocument in 2004 only 50% of corporate income was even subject to taxation reducing the real rate to only 18%.

I'm all for corporate tax reform so that accounting can't be used to dodge responsibility and that results in a lower nominal corporate tax rates.

Ravenswood Manor Garage Sale--oops!

Sun, May 20, 2012 7:14pm

What a shame the folks behind the Ravenswood Manor Neighborhood Garage Sale couldn't organize it the way it has been in the past. We made our donation, obtained our own permit at the Alderman's office, and made our own social media postings. The least we expected was the organizers providing maps on Sunday and Goodwill pickup on Monday. What happened? What a disappointment!

Thinking about buying a multi-unit

Hey folks, I'm thinking about buying a multi-unit on the 3000 block of Eastwood. Any thoughts about the neighborhood? Curious about quality of landlords, rental market, etc....Gang activity. I've got two young kids and we will be living in one of the units should we decide upon Ravenswood manor.

In terms of gangs, this is traditionally Familia Stones territory. On the block in question, they've been largely gentrified out, but that doesn't mean that you won't hear the occasional gunshots over on Kedzie or have to put some footwork into your block.

If you're in it for the long term and the price is right, I wouldn't hesitate. If you're looking to flip within 5 years, I would shy away.

On the other hand the neighbors are fabulous!

We think she is a boxer/ maybe pitbull mix. She is a super sweet 45 lb toddler. Not always well behaved then again she was a stray puppy. Two things : I'm looking for someplace to take her to obedience class near home because I don't have a car. We live near montrose and pulaski. Also maybe some advice. She of course as a puppy is super playful and only has me to play with, no other dogs. When she gets really excited she can get kind of nippy and jumps up. I think its because of her lack of suitable playmate. I have a little fenced in yard for her to play in but she desperately needs and wants a doggy friend. Her eyes light up and she gets super excited when we see other dogs. As far as I know there isn't any dog parks near us and I don't dare take her off her leash at the park ( she isn't the greatest with the command "come" yet haha I'm pretty sure she knows it just doesn't want to do it (cause being outside or playing with her toys is way too much fun). Would anyone around my area ( pulaski to kimball/ Lawrence to montrose ) be interested in a doggie play date?

Reporting Graffiti In 33rd Ward

At last night's 33rd Advisory Council Meeting, both Ald. Mell and Noel from 33rd Ward Streets and Sans discussed how to best report graffiti in the 33rd. Noel and Ald. Mell said if you feel more comfortable calling his office, please do so, and they will contact Noel. But the quickest way is just to directly email Noel. Please follow same guidelines as before, describe if it's gang, not gang, surface, and height. I'm sure it would also help if you inclduded a pic if possible in the email.

I got the strong impression Noel is really on top of the graffiti problem, and serious about responding. And I do applaud the quick removal of much of the taggings we've had in the last few months.

If you are unable to attend please add your issue in a comment below and I'll be sure to address it at the meeting. I'm also including a list of the outstanding items from the last meeting that are waiting on followup from the alderman:

- Policing levels in the 17th district. Does the Alderman think police levels are sufficient? How with the NATO summit effect the police presence in the 33rd ward?

- Street condition on the 4200 Block N Francisco. Sewer is supposedly fixed which caused the pavement to buckle according to a resident who talked to the work crew. Is there any word on when the failed street surface will be addressed?

- Playground flooding at Bateman Elementary School. Playground floods after any rain rendering it unusable. Mandatory recess for the 2012-13 school year necessitates proper drainage. A resident and architect have attempted to get a meeting with the alderman for 2.5 months to no avail. Alderman did call to discuss the matter with no notice resulting in the architect not being able to participate in the discussion. Has the alderman followed up with the architect?

Dear 33rd Ward Resident,

The NATO Host Committee has now corrected itself and says that the Horner Park protest is indeed scheduled for this Saturday morning and not today.

The following is an excerpt from the Facebook page of organizers detailing the activities of the Saturday protest:

On May 19, NATO demonstrators will gather at the Irving Park Brown Line stop, where they will be given hospital gowns with "Healthcare Not Warfare," and, "Clinics Not NATO," written on them. They intend to go door to door in the nearby neighborhood.

At 12pm, the demonstrators will converge on Horner Park at Irving and California, and will then march on Rahm Emanuel's house at 4228 N Hermitage.

Please avoid driving in the area until after 2:00 p.m. this Saturday if at all possible.

Sincerely yours,

Alderman Richard F. Mell

Doggie loose in Albany Park (likely West Highland Terrier)

We spotted this little dude--see attached photo--in the 4500 block of North Spaulding while we were out on our walk. Blue collar, no tags, a bit damp and scruffy. Generally friendly--he was curious and polite with our dog...maybe a bit too curious (she's a good lookin' pooch). He appeared to be unneutered. I was unable to get him back to our yard.

I checked on Lost Dogs Illinois on Facebook and didn't see him listed as missing. I'll hit up some other online forums too, but would appreciate others sharing this to hopefully try and find his owner!

  • Seems this pooch has been lost for a while poor guy...hope someone finds him and takes him in. If anyone is able to pick him up id be willing to foster him.

Asrar Hookah Public Nuisance Meeting, May 15

A public nuisance meeting regarding Asrar Hookah will be held at City Hall (121 N LaSalle) on May 15 at 10:00am, room 805. Asrah Hookah, formally know as Fire Rock Hookah, has been discussed for many months at the 33rd Ward Advisory Meeting. Apparently if you live nearby (I don't) you know why this meeting is being held. People have reported fights, underage drinking, and loud noise late into the night centered around this establishment. If you would like to voice your opinion on Asrar Hookah to Chicago's Department of Business Affairs and Consumer Protection please attend on May 15th.

Please pass this information along to your neighbors who may not be on EveryBlock.

Oh Rogers Park, how I hate to love you.

Albany Park Cyclists?

Hi all,

I'm considering a move from Roger's Park to the Albany Park area, near Argyle and Albany. I'll spare you the typical "what is the area like?" questions, and ask instead, "anyone out there an avid cyclist?" I'd like to get to know more cyclists in the area since I'll be further away from the lake (which is something I'm familiar with and could do with my eyes closed - but don't, obvi :) ). A new route or riding buddy is always welcome.

Thanks!

To the west is the North Branch Trail which takes you up to the Botanic Garden. You can got east to the Green Bay Trail or west to the Skokie Valley Trail.

Only a short way south to Elston, and you can take a marked bike lane to downtown.

Along Lawrence, from Western to a little past Milwaukee is another marked bike lane, with a short distance of "sharrows" instead of a lane between the river and Central Park.

To the lakefront, take Wilson to Lincoln, then a block or two south to Sunnyside one-way east to almost the lake front, jumping up to Lawrence or down to Montrose to finish the trip. Or just take the bike lane on Lawrence to Lincoln and then south to Sunnyside.

No matter where you want to go in Chicago, Albany Park is the best place to start from.

  • AlbanyParker, that's a nice route. Alternatively, you could also use Sheridan Road instead of Green Bay Road. And another +1 for Iron Cycles!
