For assistance, call 312-744-4976 or visit City Hall, 121 N. LaSalle, Room 100, Monday thru Friday between 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m.

In addition to a Veterans preference of 25%, the City of Chicago is implementing a new hiring preference for Chicago Public Schools (CPS) high school graduates, in an effort to encourage students to stay in school and graduate. This is the first hiring preference for City of Chicago positions that is targeted at CPS students. The General Laborer position will be the first position that utilizes the CPS preference. DHR will ensure that at least 25% of the candidates referred to the department for hiring consideration are CPS graduates. In order to receive the preference, applicants must attach their CPS high school transcripts or diploma at the time of application.

    Good front for drug sales

  • I was in a different hospital recently and the nurse and I heard my roommate's husband doing a drug deal (he was selling) on his cell phone. The nurse called security, and changed my room immediately.
Staff said there were patients found shooting up in their beds and visitors had been found delivering drugs to patients. That's what this charge sounds like.

Proposed Chicago Homeless Housesitter Program (CHH)

How we might salve two open wounds by applying them to each other...

To the Honorable Aldermen and Mayor of the Great City of Chicago

June 20, 2017

How can we morally as a civil society allow these two images to exist side-by-side?

An open proposal for the establishment of the "Chicago Homeless Housesitter Program"

https://www.gallantgoose.com/proposed-chicago-homeless-housesitter-program-chh/

  • This is the craziest idea I've ever heard. I said the same as Beeb. Why not have the banks just fork over a grand a month to the homeowner to NOT go into foreclosure? And this idea that either a bank AGREE to this, or the city will confiscate their property is EXTORTION!.But then that's how this cities politicians roll, isn't it?

  • paul in jefferson jefferson park resident

Wont work but , the city should hire some of these people and put them to work to solve the problem. Some of the homless gave up look around the six corners , wait till business move into area are they going to work at Binny's or allowed to sit around and beg?

Six Corner's Portage Park

Anyone know if they are still building Aldi, Binny's, Starbucks, etc? There's so much potential for this intersection and neighborhood, why does it still look like an ghost town?

  • paul in jefferson jefferson park resident

That sounds good make sure you take off the blade

  • Looking forward to becoming a Portage Park resident soon! Love reading this thread and seeing the neighborhood pull together and want better for an area that has tremendous possibilities. In fact, we fell in love with it exactly as is so anything in addition is a bonus!!

  • Joining in on the Educational Magic Conference!

Ms. Gikas is asking for $428.14:
I need to attend the Get Your Teach On workshop to inspire my teaching with some of today's most dynamic educators in education today!
    Smyser Elementary School
  • She is not looking for TAX dollars for this conference, but donations from any citizens who wish to contribute. Deciding not to contribute would have been sufficient without commentary. BTW, teachers spend their own money on school and classroom supplies.

  • Old Irving Mar 30-year Old Irving Resident

Cathy, I understand she is not looking for tax dollars but instead my dollars, some of which already pay her salary. Continuing education is one's own responsibility. No one paid for my continuing education and I suggest that this teacher fund her own.

Central and Waveland

I was just on Alderman Villegas's web page and read that he is meeting with the developer this evening. We hope that the developer will build something there that benefits the area with economic development. We don't want any thing like they are doing in the 45th Ward.

  • Gardener Portage Park

As a nurse practitioner and resident in the immediate area, I'm absolutely in agreement with this plan. We need this type of facility in the area; the population is aging and there are many seniors who need assisted living because of declining mental capacity. Anthem has an excellent reputation and should be a good neighbor. The artist's rendering looks like the facility will blend well in the 'hood.

  • In addition to filling an urgent need for senior housing, its close proximity to a hospital is another plus for the building occupants/residents.

Senior Assisted-Living Center Proposed For Portage Park Vacant Lot

CHICAGO — A 67-unit treatment center and assisted-living facility for Alzheimer's patients has been proposed to fill a vacant lot at the corner of Central and Waveland avenues in Portage Park, according to Ald. Gilbert Villegas (36th).

Anthem Memory Care administrators will present their plan for the building at a public meeting set for 6:30 p.m. on June 29 at Chicago Academy High School, 3400 N. Austin Ave., Villegas said.

This is a great idea. Assisted Living facilities are in high demand and the need for these facilities will increase as the baby boomer generation ages. It is estimated that one out of four people over the age of eighty will develop a dementing illness in their lifetime.

Assisted Living facilities are geared towards higher functioning patients who can still groom and toilet themselves, predominately those who are in the early stages of Alzheimer's Disease. They are not based on a traditional nursing home model that are for patients who require a higher level of care.

These facilities are far nicer and more pleasant than nursing homes. They are more like apartments with nice dining rooms and lounges for patients activities. Visiting hours typically end around 8 pm, which is earlier than many businesses close.

The assisted living facilities that I visited a few years ago were very clean and quiet. They would be a far more desirable neighbor than other businesses might be. Also they are a for profit business and would be a good source of tax revenue and create jobs for people in the surrounding area.

Please keep your dog out of my back yard

To the people who consistently walk their dog off the leash on the 5400 block of Warwick, please stop allowing your dog to use my back yard as your dog's pooping place. My yard isn't fenced but that doesn't give you access to my property. Today it was twice, once before 7am, the other between 4-5 pm. There's an incident every single day. Next contact will be to Animal Control.

Thank you.

  • Soo, soo sad either way. I see soo much of it when walking my dog. Sometimes the grass hides it when high, but my dog definitely finds it and sniffs it. Yukkk!! Yes, I have heard people doing that by putting all the poop in the offender's front yard. Maybe not nice but I heard that they don't do it again. Yay!!!

  • Walked out of my yard this morning to a steaming pile on my sidewalk! I left it there. Let everyone enjoy it! When I came home after work, it looked like somebody had stepped in it. If we all do this, it may force the rest of the neighbors to take action.

Nautical-Themed Charley Noble Sandwich Shop Setting Sail In Portage Park
PORTAGE PARK - Three businesses aren't enough for Joe and Melissa Basilone. Six years after the couple's first splash into the Irving Austin Business District, they're adding an on-the-go gourmet sandwich shop to their stable of storefronts in the 6000 block of West Irving Park Road, they announced.

I really like this guy. Always a pleasure getting a coffee there. Even with starbucks coming, their coffee and customer service have already won me over. Good luck with the sandwich shop, and can't wait to try it out.
