Ald Arena's Latest Spin: Calling It Veterans Housing. Even Developer Said Only 20 Units For Vets

Now Alderman Arena is selling the 7-story 100 unit CHA subsidized project as housing for Veterans! This has to be a new low, falsely using veterans as a selling point for a project. The fact of the matter is Full Circle Communities proposal for 20 of the 100 units to be exclusively for Veterans is dependent on getting a grant, not from the Federal Government, not from the Veteran's Administration, but from...Home Depot! Exactly how long that grant lasts, and whether Home Depot will continue to offer grants year after year, or call it quits once they have gotten their money's worth of good-will advertising is another question. Alderman Arena shamelessly suggests that there are 3000 veterans in the Jefferson Park area, needing housing; there may be 3000 veterans, but most of them are homeowners.
John Arena signed a court settlement on January 27th, 2017, stating that he will support a massive up-zoning (B3-5) that has brought us this nightmare project. John Arena violated the rights of the property owners when he down-zoned their property from M1-1, which allowed the property to be used as a storage facility, to B1-1 which does not.
John Arena had the owners' permits for remodeling the building for that use rescinded. The owners sued Arena and the City of Chicago because of his actions. They reached a settlement, and that is the one Arena signed, which gets him off the hook, but sticks the neighborhood with this mess.

Hi David, I guess it is silly what I posted about comcast but try and end your account. It is like you are taking their first born and it seemed to me that it is a punitive charge. Really made me mad. Kind of like the last straw type of thing. Anyway I am off and looking to greener pastures for sure.

Lawn Care Recommendations?

I'm looking to replace my lawn care service because of poor communication issues. Does anyone have one they recommend?

  • The woman spoke perfect English and set forth the instructions in Spanish - so I think the guy just misunderstood. That would be great if the prairie grasses would regenerate. I have an appointment with someone on Sunday to discuss possible avenues for regrowth or reseeding. Thanks!

Agree with Anthony. Right ideas. Wrong delivery. No matter what the "other side" to this is there is no excuse for a public official to talk that way. Ever. This is the kind of thing that embarrasses me most about Trump. No class. Follow the Obamas "When they go low we go high."

  • Boy the Obamas sure went high alright. They were the lowest class out there. Next to Bernie and pochahantis they were mouthy, nasty individuals spewing their communist ideals. The people that bought into their nonsense were as weak minded as I've ever seen.

Assistance in locating siding person for wind damaged siding.

We had some very minor siding damage from the recent wind storm and would like to have it fixed. It's about a 10ft strip at the top of the house. My guess is it would take two qualified people 30 mins to fix. My problem is finding someone for such a small job and someone who doesn't want a minimum of $500 to come to the house. We have the piece that fell off.

Police presence

I noticed an increase in police presence between Irving and Addison/Central and Laramie. Does anyone know what happened or what caused the increased patrol this evening?

  • sorry to hear they have clout, diet changes and limiting meat and seafood can help, they can take inflammatory drugs, but avoid aspirin because it can make the clout worse.

  • Police are only half of the equation to crime fighting/prevention. The other half are active community members who call them whenever they see something or someone suspicious no matter how minute it may be. Criminals start small and gradually build up as they get away with the crimes they are committing. A good example of that would be the Lincoln Park neighborhood.

For anybody attending the theft prevention seminar being held on April 5 @ 7:00 p.m. at St. Francis Borgia, 8033 W. Addison, can someone please raise the topic of alley lights are out and why is Alderman Sposato's office saying that this situation is out of their hands and that ComEd has a 6 month waiting list to fix these? Unfortunately, I cannot attend, but, really wish I could. I am absolutely certain that one of their pieces of advice is to keep your porch light on and encourage neighbors to do the same. I do that without fail. But, what good does it do when your front is on, but, the alley is pitch black. I've been calling weekly to Sposato's office and they're clearly getting perturbed by my calls, but, I feel safer with those lights on plain and simple. I have only one that's been out since December. There's an entire stretch of alley between Long and Lindner/Grace and Berniece (6/7 lights) since about the same time. I get the whole low priority thing, but, 6 months. Unacceptable. Thanks to anyone who remembers this and asks.

  • There is no reason for the lights to be out for that long. Have you called 311? Whenever our lights are out, that's who I call and they are back on in a matter of days. These are street lights though so I don't know if alley lights are handled differently. Your absolutely right that it's a safety concern and it seems to me like Sposato's office is being lazy.

  • Street & alley lights are fixed by the city, not ComEd. Call 311 over and over and over and stay on the Alderman's office. The info they are giving you is incorrect.

There will be a speaker from the City's office of neighborhood relations and a representative from Starbucks community relations there. (Please reference the flier below)I have attended their meetings in the past and find them very informative with good guest speakers.I went on their Facebook page and was shocked to see so many empty storefronts that are in our neighborhood I think it's time to start talking about these issues. I and many of my neighbors are going to this meeting and if you care about the neighborhood then stop by and participate. This is what makes a community stronger.
