Dear Nieghbor, Through September 24, Erasing the Distance will host their inaugural SPARKfest at the Filament Theatre, 4041 N. Milwaukee. Erasing the Distance (EDT) is a theater collective that works to raise public awareness and destigmatize around mental illness. They creates scripts using real interviews with people living with mental illness.

  • Helen, studies conducted down in Sarasota FL support your contention regarding food for the homeless. They indicated that somewhere around 85 to 90% of money given to panhandlers is spent on alcohol or drugs. Really want to help them? Give your money to the Salvation Army, it will be spent to truly help those in need.

I've worked as a psych tech in a mental hospital. I've worked with the Chicago Department of Family & Support Services with their Homeless Management Information System (HMIS), and I've worked with the Chicago Housing Authority. From my experiences, I can tell you that:

    A) More than 90% of the chronically homeless (meaning homeless for more than a day or two) are mentally ill.

    B) A very large majority of the non-schizophrenic mentally ill are addicted substance abusers, which prevents them from being allowed to stay in shelters.

    C) There are actually plenty of beds available in public + private shelters across the City. But in order to stay there, you have to be off drugs / alcohol. A large percentage of the homeless do not qualify for these shelters.

    D) Of the schizophrenic / psychotic homeless (characterized by delusions and irrational speech patterns), most are there because they stopped taking their meds after they were released from the hospital. Help must be forced upon these people, as they will (usually) not seek it out on their own.

    E) There is not nearly enough state and federal money set up to support victims of severe / acute mental illness. It sucks, but there's actually no place for lots of these people to stay.

Solutions? I call the cops on the homeless, and I never give them food or money. I want the cops to bring them to mental institutions (or jail them temporarily if necessary). And we absolutely must force our layers of government to provide increased funding for mental health.

First they came for my neighbor, and I did not speak out -Wake up Portage Pk; it's not just Jeff Pk

Arena wanted to expand the plan’s boundaries farther north, to include Jefferson Park and Portage Park. Burnett didn’t want to complicate the issue.
“When I’m dealing with developers who bring belligerence to the table and find every single way to get around doing affordable units on site … why wouldn’t you give us a hand in fighting that fight when you have the legal defensible position to do it in this case?” Arena asked.

Emanuel's affordable housing pilot plan clears key committee hurdle
Mayor Rahm Emanuel's plan to create affordable housing in gentrifying neighborhoods - on the Near North and Near West Sides and along the Milwaukee Avenue corridor - cleared a key hurdle Monday, despite fears that rents are too high for families to afford and the area covered is too small.

  • I guess an increase in crime and decrease in home values won't be a bad thing as long as we get more diversity in the neighborhood. Thanks Chicago democrats.

I agree with you Deb. I'm still trying to figure out why Alexa thought it was okay to stereotype Ms. Kessem as a "dumb blonde" or typical blonde Republican. Then she prattled on about her grooming and dress. I guess if you wear pantsuits and pander to the far left, then you're a smart blonde in Alexa's world.

Maybe she's jealous, you don't see blonde's going to the hair salon to have their hair dyed brown.

I don't know about Alexa, but I love my natural blonde tresses. I'm in my mid 50's, glad that I don't have to dye it yet. Saves a lot of time and money.

I'll find out more about Ms Kessem from reliable sources at some point in the future.

MJ 1201b - No, I actually stopped reading what Allexa had to say after her assessment on how her being blond, wearing makeup and white pants made her a typical Republican. After those opening remarks, I couldn't take anything Allexa may have said seriously, even if she had good points to offer. So I just looked what Allexa had to say after these sexist/racist remarks, and it gets worse. This woman is a Nazi because she is a Republican? Nothing that follows that comment bears reading.
