Looking for home for 2 cats.

We are trying to find our home for our 2 cats we love dearly but unfortunately are not able to keep because our daughter has developed a cat allergy to them. They are two boys and are the friendliest cats ever. They play with one another and love to cuddle with you and with one another. Our goal is to try to keep them together if possible but no matter what our goal is to find them a good home. Attached is a picture of the two.

  • This is NO slight to your predicament or plea to re-home your cats, but just offering that here is another possible option if you would really prefer to keep your life-long-pals-on-paws at home...

My brother was diagnosed with dog and cat allergies when he was entering first grade (some family members had both dogs and cats). The allergist administered a series of vaccinations to my brother and his allergies disappeared. He says he remembers walking to the doctor for the shots but doesn't remember them being bad. And he LOVES dogs and cats and is happy he can have them as pets thanks to be treated in childhood.
Good luck in finding a happy resolution with your situation.

  • My brother also was diagnosed with allergies and with meds developed a resistance to pet allergies. He has lived with cats for 20 years now.Really good luck with your cats. I hope you can keep them.

The Point at Six Corners-- In Case People Missed This Update

Sounds to me like Aldi and Ross are no longer involved or wavering until they find out what other businesses are interested. Sounds like we won't be seeing progress any time soon.

The Point At Six Corners Being 'Modified,' But Developer Still 'Committed'
PORTAGE PARK - Last summer, crews broke ground on a massive retail hub in the narrow wedge between Milwaukee Avenue and Irving Park Road, promising a glittering new centerpiece for the ongoing revitalization of the Six Corners Shopping District.

  • No, the Culver's, Binny's and the Retro Fitness are supposed to open a block West (caddy corner from Chase). There is constant work being done on this one, but as far as I can tell only the gym is close to opening. Not sure if Binny's and Culver's are still officially involved either.

  • Thanks for these informative posts. I drove by the Dakin houses a few weeks ago and was wondering how the sales were going. On Irving, I see the Retro getting close. It seems they are pushing dirt here and there in the lot west of Retro, but not much else. I check Arena's website pretty frequently and have not seen any recent updates.

Violent Crimes in Portage Park

This happened in the 5400 block of Henderson. The business owners over have been trying to get Ald. Reyboras to meet with us to discuss crime in this area. This happened in the 5400 block of Henderson. The business owners over have been trying to get Ald. Reyboras to meet with us to discuss crime in this area. His office will not discuss anything with us except for the homeless problem. We were told, " that if we try to discuss anything other than the homeless problem that we would not be allowed to meet with the Alderman, which is absolutely absurd, especially with his position of Public Safety Director for the entire city. There have been over a dozen business burglaries and attempts on Belmont Ave within a 5 block area alone. This is not the first violent incident over here either. There have been many other crimes here as well, too many to list here but our business group has been aware and desperately trying to get our elected officials to act. We've had little success. Our business group has been told by Alderman Reyboras himself that," there is no crime in our area". This is a direct quote. We were promised, 3 years ago, beat cops and did not get them. The Alderman ignored our concerns about the changes in this area and does to this day. If we had had those beat officers patrolling over here, I'm pretty sure the criminal element wouldn't be as bad or as brazen as they've become. When police are on the ground walking they are very aware of their surroundings, much more than a patrol car that whizzes by. I hold Alderman Reyboras directly responsible for this crime. He doesn't even know what is going on in his own ward let alone the rest of the city. I am begging our community to call his office and complain. It can't just be our business district group anymore. We've known and seen it for a few years now. It's time for the neighborhood to speak up PLEASE!

  • If we continue to put our faith in politicians that do not serve the best interest of their good, taxpaying constituents then they must be voted out. Something to think about: most major cities in America are near bankruptcy. The vast majority of them are run by Democrats and have been for 75 - 150 years. Remember that when you vote!!!!

  • PortageRules Love Portage Park!

I voted peraica years ago. the city and state are run by unions who only care about their pensions period. chicago could resemble syria and the unions would still only be talking about pension obligations.

Oppose AT&T’s plan, even if you don’t own a landline

Many people aren’t aware that AT&T is pushing legislation that would eventually scrap the most affordable, reliable phone service for people who need it most.

It poses a serious public safety concern. Too many people — including seniors, low-income families and rural residents with bad cellphone reception — still rely on landline service as their most affordable, reliable connection to 911, medical monitoring services and home security systems.

With the Illinois Telecommunications Act set to expire July 1, AT&T’s legislation (SB 1381/HB 2691) would allow the company to end service to 1.2 million business and residential landlines once the Federal Communications Commission gives final approval. And it would axe Illinois’ best local phone deals, the Consumer’s Choice calling plans, which are under a state-mandated rate freeze.

@Beeb. I am sorry to hear that you are being harassed by your neighbor. But harassment is not the same as loss of privacy. I do not in any way condone harassment! But we must face the fact that privacy IS dead. As has been pointed out by the examples in this thread and as we experience each day, "big brother" IS watching us. Our only viable recourse is to insist on the ability to watch back. This is not for our amusement! It is for our freedom and safety. We will not have to trust what our elected leaders say they are doing if we can watch what they are actually doing.

As an aside, I totally fail to see the relevance of the "Bernie Sanders" sign that you mentioned.

@Richard Price I see your point. However, I don't know giving the ability to "watch back" is all that good. It may seem like it would help us, but I believe there are too many people out there who would then use the ability to "watch back" to do criminal things. Or for someone like my neighbor, to scrutinize and and then harass someone who is just living their lives.

I'm glad you asked about the mention of the "Bernie Sanders" sign. I know when people read things they make mental assumptions about the people mentioned. The way I spoke about him, some might think my neighbor is a white elderly male of conservative beliefs and politics. Though I don't want to say anything more specific about him that would expose his identity here (and harm HIS privacy) I wanted the readers to know this man is not an old conservative curmudgeon. No. He's a supposedly enlightened modern liberal who leans all the way to socialism. To me, my neighbor's beliefs and behavior provokes a worry about the kind of totalitarian mindset some liberals have.

Now what's the problem with Starbuck's Six Corners?

Hi all - just saw this note in DNA Info -

A separate proposal to build a Starbucks drive-thru in the Six Corners Shopping District was also due to come before the board on Friday, but that decision was delayed until July due to "issues about landscaping," according to a spokesman for Ald. John Arena (45th).

I keep hearing that the other SB was approved for Irving Park and Central but I was wondering what happened with the one planned for Six Corners - now delayed until July? Jeez, enough already....

Dropped Calls Due to Airplane Traffic

Happening to anyone else in Portage Park/Jeff Park? Over the past two weeks we've noticed issues with calls on our cell phones dropping-out due to airplane traffic. We know it's on our end because some of the calls were between us and other states, in areas without any air traffic. Each time it happens, there's an airplane we can see and hear in the sky. Something must have changed because this was never an issue until recently; different frequencies or blocking service signals from cabin to the ground?
As a call dropped just now, I got an earful of sharp-pitched tones pulses through the phone, and sure enough, there was a plane passing by.
It's bad enough that air traffic kills broadcast TV signals and can rumble folks from their sleep, but having it affect our otherwise reliable phone communications is not only nettlesome, it's a safety issue.

  • NWSide Colleen 17-year Jefferson Park resident, neighbor, parent

Lots of unintended consequences for sure!

  • The signal interference we get is from low-flying air planes. Those huge metal-clad bodies and the air turbulence they create in passing interrupts linear digital signal paths. What is transmitted from point A gets knocked off course before reaching point B which drops our cell calls and digital antenna t.v. signal. But we can listen to local radio through our tuner with zero interference.

Starbucks Drive-Thru, Possible 'Sandwich Chain' Approved For Portage Park
CITY HALL - A long-brewing proposal to build a Starbucks coffee shop with a drive-thru in the west Portage Park neighborhood cleared a crucial hurdle on Friday, laying the groundwork for construction to begin by summer.

  • Panera is often paired with sbux, but not sure if they're dubbed as a sandwich chain.

  • I agree with Portage Rules. I think of Subway as fast food and more likely for take out and litter. The litter is too evident in the park, on Irving Park parkways and on some side streets south of IP.

Zoning board unanimously approves drive thru for the Starbucks at Central and Irving

We are so excited to see the Starbucks coming to this eyesore of a lot and how it will benefit the area with other economic development opportunities.

  • Well the PPNA's opposition was useless because they aren't traffic experts so their points are invalid. So whatever they said at the zoning board meeting went in one ear and out the other I bet.

  • @me123, my neighbor was at that zoning hearing and told me that the PPNA held a poster up with the picture of the 2 year old that was killed no where near the intersection of Irving and Central. I wonder if they got permission to use the photo of that child from his parents? That to us(and I'm sure that others feel this way) is disgusting and classless. Way to go PPNA!!!!
