Proposed Chicago Homeless Housesitter Program (CHH)

How we might salve two open wounds by applying them to each other...

To the Honorable Aldermen and Mayor of the Great City of Chicago

June 20, 2017

How can we morally as a civil society allow these two images to exist side-by-side?

An open proposal for the establishment of the "Chicago Homeless Housesitter Program"

https://www.gallantgoose.com/proposed-chicago-homeless-housesitter-program-chh/

  • Banks have been doing this with foreclosed properties for more than a decade now. I'm sure it was a 'liberal' bank that came up with the idea. /s

  • CJC Homeowner since 2000

If the selected “Housesitter” has difficulty in establishing accounts with said providers because of past credit problems, the City of Chicago will guarantee the account(s).
If half these "Housesitters" default on their utilities payments, the city will be stuck with $10's of millions in bills, and can Chicago really afford that? Didn't they just raise our property taxes by 10%? We all know who will end up paying for this program, we the Tax Payers, not the Banks.

Central and Waveland

I was just on Alderman Villegas's web page and read that he is meeting with the developer this evening. We hope that the developer will build something there that benefits the area with economic development. We don't want any thing like they are doing in the 45th Ward.

  • Gardener Portage Park

As a nurse practitioner and resident in the immediate area, I'm absolutely in agreement with this plan. We need this type of facility in the area; the population is aging and there are many seniors who need assisted living because of declining mental capacity. Anthem has an excellent reputation and should be a good neighbor. The artist's rendering looks like the facility will blend well in the 'hood.

  • In addition to filling an urgent need for senior housing, its close proximity to a hospital is another plus for the building occupants/residents.

Please keep your dog out of my back yard

To the people who consistently walk their dog off the leash on the 5400 block of Warwick, please stop allowing your dog to use my back yard as your dog's pooping place. My yard isn't fenced but that doesn't give you access to my property. Today it was twice, once before 7am, the other between 4-5 pm. There's an incident every single day. Next contact will be to Animal Control.

Thank you.

  • Soo, soo sad either way. I see soo much of it when walking my dog. Sometimes the grass hides it when high, but my dog definitely finds it and sniffs it. Yukkk!! Yes, I have heard people doing that by putting all the poop in the offender's front yard. Maybe not nice but I heard that they don't do it again. Yay!!!

  • Walked out of my yard this morning to a steaming pile on my sidewalk! I left it there. Let everyone enjoy it! When I came home after work, it looked like somebody had stepped in it. If we all do this, it may force the rest of the neighbors to take action.

I'm sorry that this happened to you Cindy. Always make sure to keep any belongings or valuables out of sight in a parked car. I was told this by a relation who was CPD. It's such a shame and disgraceful that we have to live defensively because of thieving people in our midst. Then there are the vandals to be concerned about too.

Just this week I noticed that a bus shelter on Central, between Wilson and Windsor had been vandalized. Given the trajectory of the glass and lack of damage to the frame, it was apparently the work of vandals. Glass littered the sidewalk and bench. Such destructive and asinine behavior. I reported it to both the 38th and 45th Wards, since it bordered both.

We keep taking the hits while our so called representatives prattle on about reducing too lax penalties for property and other crimes.

  • Thank you all very much

2) materials to use (pressure treated vs cedar vs synthetic)

I'd also appreciate any tips or suggestions for this project.
Thanks!

St John’s School will receive a classroom set of ukuleles for use in music class

Thanks to CLEF (Chicagoland Lutheran Educational Foundation) and their “Dream a Dream” award, St John’s School will receive a classroom set of ukuleles for use in music class next year for 3rd—8th grades. Students will learn how to accompany themselves on songs and have the opportunity to perform at school, in church, and in the community. Thank you CLEF!

In addition to CLEF’s grant, the Wurlitzer Foundation has awarded St. John’s with a grant to purchase 14 conga drums and a drumming curriculum. This will be used for all students Kindergarten through 8th grade. Students will have the chance to build a community of working together in an ensemble and expressing themselves through rhythm. Thank you Wurlitzer Foundation!

  • This is wonderful news. but it does remind me of a old musician's joke:

Q: What is the definition of a true gentleman?
A: Someone who knows how to play a ukulele and refrains from doing so.

  • Of course this joke also works well with banjo's, bagpipes and didgeridoos.

I've lived on Belle Plaine near Portage Park for around 8 years and the entire time there's been a long car parked in front of the driveway on Berteau and Lockwood. It's an illegal parking spot because the car blocks parts of the sidewalk as well as parts of the roadway.

I used to walk around it when walking my kids to the school, sometimes slipping on the ice on the apron next to the garage door. Now, every time I drive down Lockwood from Montrose, the car is there, sticking at least a foot into the street, Lockwood.

I've contacted the police twice, and waited a while to do this because it's a pretty lame thing to do, but I'm tired of stopping each time there is a car going in the opposite direction on Lockwood. It's also unlike the neighbors around here. Or maybe not.

In any case, nothing's happened, and I suspect it's because the homeowner is a city worker. There's often an SUV with MV plates in front of the house. Any suggestions about how to deal with this? I can always let it go.

  • Regarding the original post, there's been an update: the car is now gone. I can't believe it... I think it hadn't moved for 2-3 years, sticking out into the street the entire time. (Before then, it was parked there, coming and going.)

I followed some of the suggestions here: I called Sposato's office twice, and the second time they clarified that they were going to simply call 311 for me. The next day I called 311 myself and described the situation. I can't tell whether it was my call or Sposato's office's call or both together that made the difference.

I do know that calling the precinct or 911 is a waste of time.

  • BerteauBungalow 20 year resident.

We have the same problem at the corner of LaVergne and Belle Plaine, across from Dickinson Park. The garage is vintage so today's cars stick out beyond the apron. The neighbors across the street are smart and they park parallel to the garage, so they don't block the sidewalk. I've seen elderly people walking around the cars, in the grass. I'm afraid someone is going to fall. It's very annoying.

It poses a serious public safety concern. Too many people — including seniors, low-income families and rural residents with bad cellphone reception — still rely on landline service as their most affordable, reliable connection to 911, medical monitoring services and home security systems.

With the Illinois Telecommunications Act set to expire July 1, AT&T’s legislation (SB 1381/HB 2691) would allow the company to end service to 1.2 million business and residential landlines once the Federal Communications Commission gives final approval. And it would axe Illinois’ best local phone deals, the Consumer’s Choice calling plans, which are under a state-mandated rate freeze.

Traditional landline service will eventually be phased out but that does not mean AT&T should be able to stop providing home phone service. AT&T not only wants to get rid of copper but also the regulations that protect consumers.

Home phone service needs to be available, reliable and affordable and so in the future, whatever phone service eventually replaces copper landlines should be subject to similar rules as landlines are......

    1. It must be stand alone without bundling
    2. You should not have to buy or lease any equipment
    3. Must include a basic no frills plan (currently $19 for landlines)
    4. Must be reliable and repaired quickly

I had wireless home phone service and began experiencing an issue where I could not receive incoming calls. I called over 20 times and replaced the equipment three times. But they didn't seem to be in any hurry to resolve the issue. It was a network wide problem and not resolved until a few MONTHS later. Legally, a landline must be repaired within 72 hours.

It is still too early to phase out regular landlines. AT&T is not ready. For now, AT&T should at least lower the price on their digital phone and drop the requirement to bundle (which they have done is some areas). The copper network should not be shut down until an equally reliable and affordable network is in its place.

This happened in the 5400 block of Henderson. The business owners over have been trying to get Ald. Reyboras to meet with us to discuss crime in this area. His office will not discuss anything with us except for the homeless problem. We were told, " that if we try to discuss anything other than the homeless problem that we would not be allowed to meet with the Alderman, which is absolutely absurd, especially with his position of Public Safety Director for the entire city. There have been over a dozen business burglaries and attempts on Belmont Ave within a 5 block area alone. This is not the first violent incident over here either. There have been many other crimes here as well, too many to list here but our business group has been aware and desperately trying to get our elected officials to act. We've had little success. Our business group has been told by Alderman Reyboras himself that," there is no crime in our area". This is a direct quote. We were promised, 3 years ago, beat cops and did not get them. The Alderman ignored our concerns about the changes in this area and does to this day. If we had had those beat officers patrolling over here, I'm pretty sure the criminal element wouldn't be as bad or as brazen as they've become. When police are on the ground walking they are very aware of their surroundings, much more than a patrol car that whizzes by. I hold Alderman Reyboras directly responsible for this crime. He doesn't even know what is going on in his own ward let alone the rest of the city. I am begging our community to call his office and complain. It can't just be our business district group anymore. We've known and seen it for a few years now. It's time for the neighborhood to speak up PLEASE!

Also, I've noticed in recent years that Target is shrinking their boundaries. The HIP store and the Addison store are nearly equidistant from Six Corners. Hi all - just saw this note in DNA Info -

A separate proposal to build a Starbucks drive-thru in the Six Corners Shopping District was also due to come before the board on Friday, but that decision was delayed until July due to "issues about landscaping," according to a spokesman for Ald. John Arena (45th).

I keep hearing that the other SB was approved for Irving Park and Central but I was wondering what happened with the one planned for Six Corners - now delayed until July? Jeez, enough already....

I'm hoping they break ground soon! They just got a nitro pour coffee that is unbelievably good.

  • I wanna get half gallons of vodka at Bunny's because they have great sales. Hurry up!!

Dropped Calls Due to Airplane Traffic

Happening to anyone else in Portage Park/Jeff Park? Over the past two weeks we've noticed issues with calls on our cell phones dropping-out due to airplane traffic. Happening to anyone else in Portage Park/Jeff Park? Over the past two weeks we've noticed issues with calls on our cell phones dropping-out due to airplane traffic. We know it's on our end because some of the calls were between us and other states, in areas without any air traffic. Each time it happens, there's an airplane we can see and hear in the sky. Something must have changed because this was never an issue until recently; different frequencies or blocking service signals from cabin to the ground?
As a call dropped just now, I got an earful of sharp-pitched tones pulses through the phone, and sure enough, there was a plane passing by.
It's bad enough that air traffic kills broadcast TV signals and can rumble folks from their sleep, but having it affect our otherwise reliable phone communications is not only nettlesome, it's a safety issue.

  • NWSide Colleen 17-year Jefferson Park resident, neighbor, parent

Lots of unintended consequences for sure!

  • The signal interference we get is from low-flying air planes. Those huge metal-clad bodies and the air turbulence they create in passing interrupts linear digital signal paths. What is transmitted from point A gets knocked off course before reaching point B which drops our cell calls and digital antenna t.v. signal. But we can listen to local radio through our tuner with zero interference.

Zoning board unanimously approves drive thru for the Starbucks at Central and Irving

We are so excited to see the Starbucks coming to this eyesore of a lot and how it will benefit the area with other economic development opportunities.

  • Well the PPNA's opposition was useless because they aren't traffic experts so their points are invalid. So whatever they said at the zoning board meeting went in one ear and out the other I bet.

  • @me123, my neighbor was at that zoning hearing and told me that the PPNA held a poster up with the picture of the 2 year old that was killed no where near the intersection of Irving and Central. I wonder if they got permission to use the photo of that child from his parents? That to us(and I'm sure that others feel this way) is disgusting and classless. Way to go PPNA!!!!

Missing Package

We order something from Home Depot that was delivered to an address on the 4200 N. Menard Ave block. It was delivered today but not there when I got home.

Has anyone here had issues with packages being stolen?

I told him to beat it, and he mumbled a few words, and ran away. I saw that there was a green mini van waiting for him at the corner, and he hopped in. The gypsy kid looked to be about 11 or 12 years old. There are gypsies out there stealing packages. Be on alert.

  • There is also the problem of delivery person incorrectly reading address and leaving packages next door. I receive packages for different streets even, sometimes same address but wrong street. So, not always a theft, sometimes delivery person cannot read...

For sure! When comcast first came out with phone service, the cable-phone unit had a battery for backup. Within months they stopped including batteries. I asked why and the response was something to the effect of, 'it's a liability issue because we would have to eventually replace all the batteries so now we don't include them.' Comcast is, in effect, saying, 'Don't count on our service to be as reliable as traditional service or count on it being there in an emergency.' I don't have comcast phone service but I do have my cablemodem on a UPS powerstrip and I recommend anyone who wants to avoid power related issues for computers, internet, cable, etc., get one. You can get 2-prong (ungrounded) one's for ~$30.

Please, call a special AARP Illinois Telecom Hotline, 844-220-5552, and tell your legislators to reject SB 1381 *and* HB 2691.

If AT&T ends landline service, so too ends all peripheral services the infrastructure supports, including reliable and affordable medical telemetry. With the relatively few (1.2 million) customers across the state, it's doubtful any other company would buy and maintain the network -- even if one did, cost would likely double or triple.

"For today’s landline callers, other options — wireless service, Internet-based phones and bloated triple-play packages from the cable company — aren’t as easy, reliable or affordable as plain old telephone service. Consider this: Advanced 911 — which can trace the exact location of a cellphone — won’t be fully implemented in Illinois until 2020 at the earliest. And AT&T’s recent 14-state wireless 911 outage proves that the company is not yet able to provide a satisfactory alternative for landline customers.

Rather than let AT&T dictate the terms, Illinois should launch a more comprehensive discussion on how to create a better, pro-consumer plan for our telecom future."

"No Honking" Signs

Does anyone have "No Honking" signs in their alleys?

I really would love to get some put up in the alley behind my home. Many people honk obnoxiously when driving through the intersection. Speed-bumps would be nice too.

  • smartypants LifeLongCityGirl

Portage....I'm going to look into that. Thank you.

  • I honk whenever I leave the alley and am about to cross over the threshold to the street.

I do it because blind spots from the garages at the end of the alley.

Im not really into feeling like dealing with hitting a pedestrian or some dummy riding his/her bike on the side walk.

Cicero/Berteau Development also on May 19th ZBA Meeting Agenda

The proposed drive-thru coffee shop at Cicero & Berteau is also on the agenda for the ZBA Meeting on May 19th. It is our understanding that some modifications were being made to the site plan that was presented to the community. We have been trying to obtain a copy of the current site plan since mid-April and have now received it from Ald. Arena’s office, see:

https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B8sm_tSOhk6wMUhKQU9PQkZPSjRHLVJjSjRSUGQydmJkeGtB/view?usp=sharing

The main safety concerns we have had with similar developments on Narragansett just north of Irving Park and at Irving Park and Central are not a factor with this development. However, the PPNA board has voted to remain neutral with regard to this development.

    4150 N. Cicero SITE PLAN.pdf
    https://drive.google.com
  • Anyone hear how the zoning meeting went?

  • The attorney for the Cicero/Berteau development requested and was granted a continuance until the July 21st ZBA Meeting, if we heard correctly.

The Irving/Central development debate lasted almost 2 hours. They do not issue decisions on the spot, we believe they usually publish their decisions on the following Monday.

The old owner of my house filled the storage area under my porch with large broken chunks of concrete. I have no idea why it is there or what it is for. Short of putting a little bit in my garbage cans over the next 10 years or dumping it next to the Metra tracks (JOKING HERE GUYS), is there a free way I can dispose of this?

  • Sadly it's still there. You want any??

Recommendations for Dry Wall repair and Tile Replacement

Any recommendations for a drywall repair service for ceiling repair or a handyman who can replace one broken tile on our basement floor. Need someone who's available in the next week.
Thanks!

  • smartypants LifeLongCityGirl

Slobo was good for flooring, but MAKE SURE HE DOESN'T CUT TILE INSIDE YOUR HOUSE!!!! I have no idea why he did this but it took 4 cleaners plus myself & husband 6 hours to get the white dust off of everything. But weeks later we were still washing every dish, glass and spoon from the cupboards. It was a huge mess. I have never in 30 yrs of home ownership had someone cut ceramic tile on my dining room table. (We have a big yard and heated garage....)

  • If you would like a backup quote please send me a message or text : benn35@yahoo.com - 312-945-1024 - local work crew, available next week

Can do all repairs including plumbing and electric.

Found pet rabbit

Just found a white pet rabbit on the 4000 block of Menard

  • Red Door Shelter!!! No kill shelter specifically for rabbits. They took in my incredible feisty/blood drawing house rabbit when I had a baby and feared for her safety.

Red Door. But if you and your neighbors can drop off a donation along with the bunny that would help a lot. We did so several years ago with a Rex bunny we found very injured on the street in Mayfair.

Cub's Jacket/Kid's Plea

On May 8th I was playing during recess and got too hot so I took off my official Cub's Jacket. When I went to retrieve it, it was gone. This Cub's Jacket has been pasted down two generations. It was left on St. John's Private Property. I'm devastated, if you have any information about this jacket please return it to the school or Jefferson Park Police Station 16th District.
Thank you.

  • I understand the devastation. about 27 years ago I left a pair of gloves in church, when I went back they were gone and no one had turned them in. even thou I bought new gloves since then, it still bothers me that I left them.
