The first is to probably dormer the attic, but only half since our furnace is up there, adding a bedroom and maybe bath. The stairs would probably be added on outside, we have room to do that. The second and arguably less expensive option is to connect our garage to the house (probably only 4 feet away) and then turn 3/4 of the garage into a bedroom, saving 1/3 at the back for storage. We have a parking pad, and would cover that to park. I talked to an architect friend of mine who thinks the slab may not support anything else, and that the city probably won't allow the garage conversion. Thoughts?

Please give very serious consideration to your kitchen floor before throwing it away. If you are in a standard Chicago bungalow that floor is almost certainly first cut maple an inch thick. If it squeaks and you have the money you could have a flooring company relay it, eliminating all the squeaks. It will last another 150 - 200 years of normal use with occasional refinishing.

And if it is a classic bungalow the Historic Chicago Bungalow Association has complete architectural plans and materials lists for updates and additions in designs fully harmonious with the original house. http://www.chicagobungalow.org/

If is is a 50's/60's ranch you're on your own. If it is a pre 1889 annexation frame house covered in zbrick you are on your own, too.

Car parked on apron but in street

I've lived on Belle Plaine near Portage Park for around 8 years and the entire time there's been a long car parked in front of the driveway on Berteau and Lockwood. It's an illegal parking spot because the car blocks parts of the sidewalk as well as parts of the roadway.

I've lived on Belle Plaine near Portage Park for around 8 years and the entire time there's been a long car parked in front of the driveway on Berteau and Lockwood. It's an illegal parking spot because the car blocks parts of the sidewalk as well as parts of the roadway.

I used to walk around it when walking my kids to the school, sometimes slipping on the ice on the apron next to the garage door. Now, every time I drive down Lockwood from Montrose, the car is there, sticking at least a foot into the street, Lockwood.

I've contacted the police twice, and waited a while to do this because it's a pretty lame thing to do, but I'm tired of stopping each time there is a car going in the opposite direction on Lockwood. It's also unlike the neighbors around here. Or maybe not.

In any case, nothing's happened, and I suspect it's because the homeowner is a city worker. There's often an SUV with MV plates in front of the house. Any suggestions about how to deal with this? I can always let it go.

Someone should register a site named Chicago Parking Fails, or some such, and post photographs with short descriptions, including addresses.

Can the city replace my sod that ComEd destroyed?

I've been calling landscaping companies to give me an estimate. When ComEd came through, they replaced the little patch of grass on the corner with clay. Nothing will grow there. One of the companies I contacted suggested that the city may replace it. Is this true? Do I call 311?

If I need to hire somebody, can anybody give me a reputable landscaping company? I tried K.C. Landscaping but the gal never came to give me an estimate. Lost my business. Another one I called said the job was too small. Thanks everyone.

  • smartypants LifeLongCityGirl

Do it yourself. It is not a lot of area to cover. Do it yourself sod is not too expensive and you can have it delivered right to your doorstep. Waiting for ComEd to step up will cost you more in headaches than sod will in dollars.

Catch Basin/Sewer cleaning

Hi All:
Some streets have clogged catch basins. I did the 311 form online and I have noticed some bright green dots on some of them recently. Does that mean they will be vacuumed out? It is not just some leaves around the grate, but the actual hole is plugged. I have cleaned around the grate and the street gutter near me, but it is not helping much. I know street cleaning is coming up, but this may be a separate issue. Does anyone have info? Thanks.

  • smartypants LifeLongCityGirl

Same here!! Tried to start a ticket on this but was unable to. I constantly troll my block with my rubber gloves, a shovel and sturdy trash bag to keep sewer grates unblocked, but this year's constant rain, leaves and muck have clogged one of the actual drains below the grate. Im worried about flooding.

Building onto the garage

I saw another post where some folks in the area are looking to connect their garage and turn it into a bedroom. A lot of people were saying that the city would not allow that. Are there city issues against building onto a garage or something? I was looking to extend my garage out a few feet to give me some storage, does that seem like I'll hit some road blocks? Thanks for your help

  • And Chicago building codes hardly change. Most towns update their codes every 5-10 years so no they do not change yearly. Also, if there is not anything really wrong with the existing garage, only the addition would have to be built to today's code

  • smartypants LifeLongCityGirl

CBP2017, not that I am recommending this, but 2 of my neighbors enlarged their garages against current city codes several years ago with no consequences....but they never notified the city of their plans, so both were done on the DL. One built into their current yard which had no impact...

CBP2017, not that I am recommending this, but 2 of my neighbors enlarged their garages against current city codes several years ago with no consequences....but they never notified the city of their plans, so both were done on the DL. One built into their current yard which had no impact on neighbors on either side, nor did it impede newer fire codes that dont allow garages to be built up to neighboring property lines (because that increases risk of a fire spreading.) The other neighbor built a 2nd story onto his garage for storage.

Last year all the other neighbors in the building used my furniture as if it were theirs, no one asked permission. Everyone knew it was mine. I did not mind at first because I didn't use it everyday and I wanted to be neighborly. Some smoked cigarettes and used the table top as an ashtray and butted out their cigarettes on it, left the butts on the table or tossed it on the ground under the table, some left burn holes on the chairs, allowed their pets to sit on the chairs and snuggle up to soak up some rays, kicked their feet up on the table while sitting in the chairs, some have moved the set to position it elsewhere in the yard to their liking, and someone damaged the umbrella which I had to replace- twice last summer.
This time I do not want anyone to use it. I did notify my landlord who is a Chicago police officer. His response to me was that he didn't want to deal with petty drama.
Any advice on how to deal with this?

I've not read all the 31 comments above, so this might just be repetition. First, the furniture denies five other households use of part of what you describe as a small common area. Did the other five households give you permission to mark off space they paid for in their rent?

Second, furniture in a small recreational area shared by five other households in practical terms is yielded to common use. It is naive to expect different.

Third, the impractical cure would be to organize a building-wide pool to buy common furniture which is surrendered to the owner. That's probably not going to happen, but it would help you avoid becoming the building's crazy neighbor.

I bought a car yesterday, from a dealer in Wisconsin. Anyone know what I need to do? I'm pretty sure that the dealer is submitting the title to IL and they gave me a temporary plate.

When do I go to the DMV and get it registered to me (and pay the taxes?) Do I go over to the DMV on Monday--with the sale papers? Or do I wait until the Title comes in the mail and then go over there? (Assuming its going to come in the mail??)

What do I do about my city sticker? Do I have to get a new one? (They stuck the old one on the new car.)

And can I put my old plates (from the car I traded in) onto the new car? Or is that a big no-no? (Until its properly transferred.) I'm worried someone's going to steal the temporary plate. (And if I can't put my plates on, can I put the temporary plate in the back window? Or is that a no-no too?

Help please! I looked at cyberdriveillinois, but its not clear to me.

  • @Melissa, I didn't have to get my emissions done first, but I bought my car from a dealer in WI and it was a few years ago. Things may have changed since then. The people at Elston were pretty helpful, so you could stop by and ask once you're purchased the car.

  • Chi-Girl, thanks! I test drove the car here in Chicago, and woke up with horrible neck pain the next day!! So I didn't end up buying the car after all. I'm back to the drawing board when it comes to finding a car, but at least I didn't have to go up to Wisconsin for nothing!

But then the option of zig-zagging your way through residential side streets was suggested to save time. I thought we were concerned about safety here?......

KNicas then stated that she walks a couple blocks to the park so this is a safety concern for her. "How about putting it at Lawrence and Central?" Well, Jefferson Park is a block away from there so I'm sure there are other families who walk to their local park. I'm not sure how exactly that is helping your cause, if it is truly safety that you are fighting for. Also, please do not cry safety and condemn a Starbucks but suggest a Brewery ( "where there's a park across the street and families walking" ) at the very same location. It sounds incredibly foolish. Don't get me wrong I am all for any and all new businesses in the Portage Park area setting up shop wherever they please (breweries included 😉) just pointing out others with their own agenda.

  • Well we know the red light cameras and speed cameras were all for the safety of our city (wink..wink) but in all reality it turned out to be a big, fat, revenue stream that really drove the decision.

i have to agree with paul with the construction of the homes, I stopped by for the open house awhile back just to see what I will never probably live in. it is lacking in a few areas including lack of trim, I found some corners of the walls imperfect, especially the border wall at the top of the stairs and did find some imperfections in fit and finish overall.

I personally did not like the openness of the kitchen blending to the living room, but I guess it is ideal for someone that does entertaining as it is also equipped with several bathrooms.

Need a wheelchair?

I have a wheelchair that I need to get rid of/donate. I am really having trouble finding a home for it. It is in good condition and free. It is 6 years old. Anyone know of a place that will pick up?

  • Katherine Pastor, Irving Park United Methodist Church

We have a member of our church who needs a wheelchair and has been borrowing one. If it still available, I would be delighted to pick it up.

  • If it's still available, our school has been asking for a wheelchair donation for use by the school nurse.

They will come to your house and sit down with you to discuss what you are looking for and the different materials they offer which will be different prices. Vinyl siding for example is considerably cheaper than fiver cement siding. Then will send you a proposal to have a look at and come round and discuss it with you, show you sample materials/colours and then see if you want to move forward. It's not a hard sell which we liked. It is cheaper to get your siding done in the winter as its their slower season and they are likely to be more open to negotiating.

The West Portage Park Neighbors Association has just reached a written agreement with Sumac Development, the developers of the property at 5555 W. Irving Pk. Rd., that all exits from their development will be RIGHT TURN ONLY.

We at the WPPNA, are for vigorous economic development of our area, but not at the expense of safety. The option to turn left was problematic at best and hazardous at worst. That had to be corrected before the project, in our opinion, could move forward.

We at the WPPNA try to be problem solvers. We reached out to the developer and impressed upon them the need for all the exits to be Right Turn Only. They agreed. Attached is copy of the letter from Sumac's attorney. Hopefully, this puts this issue finally to rest.

  • The letter reads, ”As indicated in our telephone call, the developer has agreed to install signs prohibiting left turns at all access points for the development"

The letter reads, ”As indicated in our telephone call, the developer has agreed to install signs prohibiting left turns at all access points for the development"

Not sure what victory you're championing here.

The simple reality here is the developer at the zoning meeting in The Patio, said they would install concrete barriers, known as “porkchops” to ensure that no one would make a left-hand turn out of the facility crossing against the flow of traffic.

He could NOT have been more clear.

The WPPNA is taking credit for a solution that doesn't even hold him accountable for something he promised.

Alderman Sposato is quoted as saying "What can I do about this?” What you can do Alderman Sposato, is stand up for your constituents and look to protect pedestrians and say no to the zoning change without the “porkchops” that were promised.

"When was the last time you saw somebody roll a stop sign in Chicago?” If you said the last time you took your car out, then you're being truthful.

The suggestion that people will follow the signs when there's no enforcement in the way of police is the fools errand here.

The WPPNA specifically touts themselves as follows, “The West Portage Park Neighbors Association is committed to promoting and maintaining a thriving, family oriented atmosphere in the Portage Park area.” Check out their Facebook page.

Is the privilege of getting your $6 latte without having to get in and out of your car worth a traffic fatality? Is a drive-thru across from a busy park that endangers pedestrians, families, and children “promoting and maintaining a thriving, family oriented atmosphere in the Portage Park area?”

I think this an organization that is hoping most people will fail to read the attachment here because if they did, its safe to say they would realize that the developer, Alderman, and the WPPNA all feel that a drive-thru and the business that it secures is more important than the neighborhood’s safety.

    That is shameful.

But, owners with outdoor cats should have collars on with tags that say "outdoor cat: do not feed, do not take". It saves people who think the cat is in danger a lot of wasted time trying to find the owner.

The West Portage Park Neighbors Association (WPPNA) supports the proposed Economic Development at Irving & Central.

The former used car lot at Irving and Central, will be the home of a couple of new businesses, anchored by a strong probability of us welcoming the long awaited Starbucks Coffee Shop.

This, we feel, is a good thing for the neighborhood. If we are to grow as a community, we need strong economic development. While, the WPPNA has been and will continue to be supportive of local retailers, to think that 2 or 3 or 4 local independent merchants will be able to shoulder the load of serving a whole community is not a realistic notion.

In short, we need a combination of both independent retailers and "big box" retailers. Look to the East of us at Six Corners. A once proud shopping district that fell on hard times is experiencing a rebirth. New stores are moving in. All small "Mom & Pop" type places? No. Some are but there are also 3 or 4 major chains coming in, a Binny's, a Culvers, an Aldi's and a possibly a proposed Starbucks.

That's what our neighborhood needs, a combination of the two.

So where do we go from here?

The next step is the developer has filed an application with the Zoning Board of Appeals for a special use to establish a one-lane drive-thru to serve a proposed "quick service restaurant" (QSR).

The Zoning Board Meeting is

Friday April 21st
9:00am
City Hall 121 N. LaSalle St. Room 200

The WPPNA is in SUPPORT of this zoning change.

The WPPNA will be at the Zoning Meeting to testify in support of application. We encourage other community residents to come to the meeting to show your support.

If you can't come to the meeting but still want to show support, then you can sign a letter of support that we are drafting that we will present to the Zoning Board on the 21st.

Email us at westppn@gmail.com with any questions or comments.

Our neighborhood needs this.

  • Craig E. Friend of Chicago

I'll never understand why people are willing to pay as much as they do for a cup of coffee. JMO

  • yes, left turns would be bad... some people have trouble making right turns, even when they can legally do so.

LOST DOG Berteau/Lamon

PLEASE HELP!!!! We think our tenant left the gate open by mistake and our very large and disheveled Great Pyrenees got out tonight sometime around 7? If found please call 773-387-2329. He's not wearing his collar, but he is chipped. His name is Jackson.

  • You should never leave your dog in a yard unattended. Problem solved. Neighbors can't feed him random food that will make him sick and no one can steal him.

  • Weebis SWCC Vet. (Ret.)

Does "Jackson" have a dog house or some other form of shelter from the elements?

I understand different breeds tolerate different climates and weather, but since "Jackson" will be in the yard, may be the option of bedding and/or roofed shelter for him would be a good thing to his well being.

Just a suggestion. I know we all love dogs and only wish the very best for them.

Garbage Pickup

Hello neighbors! We are new homeowners so we aren't used to regular garbage pickup. We used to just put everything in the building's dumpster and that was that. When we moved in, the previous homeowners had left behind a ton of chopped up wood that we have bundled up. However, we don't know if we can put that out for garbage collection or do we have to do something special with it? Do garbage collectors take whatever you put out, or does it have to fit inside the bin? We also have three 5-gallon buckets of sand we want to dispose of. Will they take that, too?

Thanks in advance!

  • Handyman Rich Fixing, Building, Taking Things Apart = Enjoyment

Giving the sand to someone who can use it is the best idea. If nobody wants it, you shouldn't have to much trouble finding a pot hole that could use it.

Put the sand in a bucket in the alley label it n say its free for the taking. I wouldn't mind taking it if I knew where it was.

I love watching and caring for young children because they cease to surprise me and are like mini comedians with the things that they come up with! I have experience with avariety of age groups including newborns, toddlers, and early school age children. The largest group of children that I have cared for in a home setting was three children. The main responsibilities in caring for the newborns and infants included diaper changes, bottle prep and feeding, burping, nap time, tummy time, and soothing and comforting. As they got older and whenever the weather was nice we would go for walks around the neighborhood and to near by parks. Main responsibilities with the toddlers were much the same, but also included snack and meal prep and feedings, a more structured sleep and meal schedule, and developmentally appropriate activities. For example, using little walker toys to practice walking and balancing, reading books and practicing words, coloring with crayons, and singing and dancing of course! I also have experience using cloth diapers and mixing formula or breast milk for bottles. I love to cook won't mind cooking for child and family. I can cook anything from American, Puerto Rican, Indian, Middle Eastern. I'm an outdoor person hope you are too. Would love to take your child(ren) to activities, park, zoo, musums, playdates, etc. Would love if family is interested in 1 to 3 year commitment. I have experience in caring for twins and more than one child at a time. If I sound like a good fit for your family. I would love to hear from you. Thanks for reading and good luck to you.

  • Leave the flyer in their mailbox. Make sure there's a picture and leave your phone #, and the approximate location that he was last seen. If you're dog is found, do not EVER leave dog in backyard unattended cause people steal dogs and use them as bate dogs or they are sold. Good luck!

  • A few months ago my friend lost their dog too and we panicked! Thankfully someone spotted him and we got him back! I hope the same for you. We dont live that far form that intersection so I will keep a look out and ask a few neighbors around us too.

Maybe a neighbor saw her and took her in? Or maybe she made her way back to her favorite park that you take her too?

I hope that you will be reunited soon!

Thinking about buying in Portage Park

Hi Folks!

My wife and I (+ 2 young children) are looking at houses in Portage Park. We've seen a few not too far from Gray Elementary and was wondering how that area is (mainly in terms of safety).

We had visited a couple other houses near Reinberg Elementary but got turned off when we saw quite a bit of graffiti on garage doors in the alleys.

Any feedback on Gray Elementary would be welcome as well.

Thanks!

Portage Park Elementary

Hello - starting to think about schools for Pre-K/Kindergarten for my child. I'd love input on Portage Park Elementary. Please just send advice that is helpful - not looking for people complaining. Thanks!

  • My kid does not go to Bart's or PP, but I will say that I'd be surprised if you got a stink eye being a same sex couple at most schools. The reality is that families come in a lot of varieties, and if a school wants to educate kids it needs to deal with that reality.

  • CPS pre-k is not free for all students. Fees are based your income level. I paid a lower tuition at a catholic school than compared the pre-k CPS fee. Something to consider when looking for a school for child.

Tree roots in sewer line

Almighty plumbing tried to come out to my house today to clear the line, but only were able to clear it a little because the tree roots were so bad. They are telling me I need to use a "warthog" which is like a chainsaw that will grind away at these roots. He wants $1500 more to do this and clean the catch basin. (this is in addition to the $325 I just paid for routing the sewer line)

Does anyone have any experience in this?

Trees are more blessing (storm water control, air cleansing, beauty, shade, wildlife) than curse (fall raking) -- that is, unless you've got diseased or troublesome trees (like non-native Norway Maples which drop whirly-gigs & seeds that collect in gutters) or they're impinging on your sidewalks &/or foundation. In few cases would I ever recommend tree removal unless truly necessary.

Thanks everyone. I'm really glad I asked. I ended up finding a company that came out within hours. I have three very large trees that are causing the problem, and these roots are very aggressive! They did hydrojetting and used the warthog and the pipes were crystal clear in the video they took. A night and day difference between what the first guy did. It took a crew of 3 men 5 hours to complete the pipes, and a separate crew came to clean my catch basin. Since my pipes were backed up sewage had been accumulating and it took the, quite a while to get it all out. YUCK.

I've tried pouring the root killer in the past and it hasn't worked. I was also told even if I cut the trees down the roots keep growing! It's really a nightmare.

I went with a company called FLO MAX, and were very professional and quick to get my problem solved, and were 1/2 the price of my first quote.
