Ald Arena's Latest Spin: Calling It Veterans Housing. Even Developer Said Only 20 Units For Vets

Now Alderman Arena is selling the 7-story 100 unit CHA subsidized project as housing for Veterans! This has to be a new low, falsely using veterans as a selling point for a project. The fact of the matter is Full Circle Communities proposal for 20 of the 100 units to be exclusively for Veterans is dependent on getting a grant, not from the Federal Government, not from the Veteran's Administration, but from...Home Depot! Exactly how long that grant lasts, and whether Home Depot will continue to offer grants year after year, or call it quits once they have gotten their money's worth of good-will advertising is another question. Alderman Arena shamelessly suggests that there are 3000 veterans in the Jefferson Park area, needing housing; there may be 3000 veterans, but most of them are homeowners.
John Arena signed a court settlement on January 27th, 2017, stating that he will support a massive up-zoning (B3-5) that has brought us this nightmare project. John Arena violated the rights of the property owners when he down-zoned their property from M1-1, which allowed the property to be used as a storage facility, to B1-1 which does not.
John Arena had the owners' permits for remodeling the building for that use rescinded. The owners sued Arena and the City of Chicago because of his actions. They reached a settlement, and that is the one Arena signed, which gets him off the hook, but sticks the neighborhood with this mess.

Assistance in locating siding person for wind damaged siding.

We had some very minor siding damage from the recent wind storm and would like to have it fixed. It's about a 10ft strip at the top of the house. My guess is it would take two qualified people 30 mins to fix. My problem is finding someone for such a small job and someone who doesn't want a minimum of $500 to come to the house. We have the piece that fell off.

Police presence

I noticed an increase in police presence between Irving and Addison/Central and Laramie. Does anyone know what happened or what caused the increased patrol this evening?

  • sorry to hear they have clout, diet changes and limiting meat and seafood can help, they can take inflammatory drugs, but avoid aspirin because it can make the clout worse.

  • Police are only half of the equation to crime fighting/prevention. The other half are active community members who call them whenever they see something or someone suspicious no matter how minute it may be. Criminals start small and gradually build up as they get away with the crimes they are committing. A good example of that would be the Lincoln Park neighborhood.

For anybody attending the theft prevention seminar being held on April 5 @ 7:00 p.m. at St. Francis Borgia, 8033 W. Addison, can someone please raise the topic of alley lights are out and why is Alderman Sposato's office saying that this situation is out of their hands and that ComEd has a 6 month waiting list to fix these? Unfortunately, I cannot attend, but, really wish I could. I am absolutely certain that one of their pieces of advice is to keep your porch light on and encourage neighbors to do the same. I do that without fail. But, what good does it do when your front is on, but, the alley is pitch black. I've been calling weekly to Sposato's office and they're clearly getting perturbed by my calls, but, I feel safer with those lights on plain and simple. I have only one that's been out since December. There's an entire stretch of alley between Long and Lindner/Grace and Berniece (6/7 lights) since about the same time. I get the whole low priority thing, but, 6 months. Unacceptable. Thanks to anyone who remembers this and asks.

  • There is no reason for the lights to be out for that long. Have you called 311? Whenever our lights are out, that's who I call and they are back on in a matter of days. These are street lights though so I don't know if alley lights are handled differently. Your absolutely right that it's a safety concern and it seems to me like Sposato's office is being lazy.

  • Street & alley lights are fixed by the city, not ComEd. Call 311 over and over and over and stay on the Alderman's office. The info they are giving you is incorrect.

This is a screen shot of a police officers computer. The image shows all the patrol officers beats in the district. The areas where it says "down car" means there is no beat officers. About a year ago LeClaire was tore up due to a water main project. After this project the street was re-paved and new roundabouts and curbs were put in. Now that there's this extended mining project happening at Diversey and Laramie the re-routing of traffic continues. The CTA is following a set detour down Fullerton which has recently been re re-routed to Belmont. There are Detour signs set up indicating this. But throughout the day there are large semi-trucks, dump trucks, car transport trucks and other large vehicles well above 5 tons traveling down the residential side streets rather than taking the set detour. These large vehicles cannot make it around the new roundabouts so they either A, run right over them or B, go counterclockwise and run over the new curbs which is destroying them. Originally the Diversey and Laramie project was scheduled to end February 4th, then it was extended to March 15th. Now we are hearing that it might be extended another 2 weeks. By the time all this is finished they will have to repair the new curbs and roundabouts on the side streets again.

Hi, I live on the 5200 Block of Pensacola. Wanted those around this area to know that about 3-4 shots were heard between 4:30 and 4:45 am 2/27. (Based on my husband and neighbors recollection). Im sure if that could happen in the 16th district there would be police from other areas of the city that would love to work in an area where they were respected and actually received help to solve crime in the community. So many big trees being cut down

I've noticed in the 38th and 45th Wards there are so many big trees being cut down. All along Sunnyside and other side streets.

A lot of them do not appear to be diseased or dead, maybe infested by the Ash Bug?

I'm wondering if the city will automatically plant new trees? It's sad to see so many being taken down. The neighborhood looks empty and vacant.

  • Sadly at my boyfriend's house they destroyed a 100year old chestnut tree. They chopped off huge branches on 1 side. Now it looks lopsided. I also saw through out the neighborhood that they take off huge branch so high up the tree it looks ridiculous. These guys are professionals? Huge waste off tax payers money. Unwanted tree trimming. Please stop.

  • To balance the picture, I waited two years for the city to trim my overgrown maple and they did a great job this last summer.

Gas leak at Portage Park Senior Center

Numerous emergency vehicles showed up at Portage Park this morning due to a major gas leak. At least three fire engines, two ambulances, and police were there by noon. It looked like it was the Senior Center on one end of the building that holds the pool where all of the action was taking place. The area was being cordoned off so I'd say to avoid that part of the park for the rest of the day unless you hear otherwise.

The gas was so bad that I could smell it - strongly - running along the north side of the park on Berteau, 500+ feet away from the building.

Water main on Dakin and CVS lot on Central

Hi Everyblock:
There are signs on parts of Dakin that say water main work coming soon, but only on parts of the street near Long Ave. Would the city just fix one part? or are they just not putting up many warning signs? Perhaps it's connected to the water main work on Irving that was done over the summer. I did not see any info on the city Water Dept website.

CVS lot: I called Alderman Villegas and was told there would be some type of announcement in mid to late February, but have not seen yet. The sign was removed and heard the zoning was changed, but no other info. Does anyone know?

Basketball hoops in the park?

Recent new resident to portage park & have noticied that most parks with basketball courts have had their hoops removed, just an empty backboard. Was this done for a reason? With the weather warming up, wondering where there are complete basketball courts for those in the area?

  • Some parks have removable rims. The attendant takes them down at closing time. If your park doesn't have this design maybe you could start asking for it. PS Each aldercreature/ward has a $1million annual budget that could buy these. It is called "Menu Money" and is used for things like pot holes, street signs, parklets, school learning gardens, traffic lights & road stripes and similar.

  • Kapel2 Neighborhood Resident

I was thinking of fenced in basketball courts, similar to tennis courts, that would be locked during the hours the parks are closed. But removable rims is a better idea as it would cost a lot less to implement.

I just want to respectfully say that the comment about subsidized housing bringing more crime to the area is not fair to say. I am a single mom in the area that would benefit from subsidized housing. I work a full time job and my children are well behaved and respectful. We would not bring crime to the area. The generalization that people living in subsidized housing contribute to crime is just not acceptable.

I was Saturday night - they caught one guy & were looking for another according to police scanner. My daughter said she heard them again this morning - but I did not.

  • Thanks! I appreciate the info!

  • Is there gang members that live in the building on lockwood and Hutchinson ? Across from portage school. I think this may be where the trouble is coming from.

lot sold at Central and Waveland

I drove by the empty lot at Central and Waveland and noticed the for sale signs are gone. Does anyone know if it was sold and if so who bought it? I know it was downzoned to R-2 which I think is residential.

  • Laymaneers Constant Vigilance

It was sold. Some folks have done some research on the buyer and he seems to be a strip mall developer if I'm remembering correctly. Ald. Villegas has said once plans are developed they will bring them to the community for a meeting.

Inaccurate reporting. http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/local/breaking/ct-chicago-police-sh

I would just like to point out that the Chicago Tribune has consistently gone out of its way to misrepresent what happened in this tragedy. Considering I have the precise information in the police report via their FOIA request, I feel it is not only rude, but purposefully misleading to the public. In this incident, only one bullet was fired. Unfortunately, and tragically, the bullet passed through the offender, and struck the innocent person. It is a horrible and misfortunate event. However, not once has the Tribune reporter that accurately, despite knowing the information. They make it seem as if the officer involved was spraying wildly, striking another person without any concern. The fact of the matter is he fired one bullet at the offender. The bullet struck and passed through that person, tragically hitting the person behind him who, along with the offender's family, had called the police on him in the first place after he also threatened her with a baseball bat.

I find it sad and ironic that the Chicago Tribune is trying to get people to sign up to read it online service for money by touting the fact that they are reliable news. They prove all too often, at least in the last couple years, that politics is ahead of accuracy in terms of their agenda. They over hype stories that will infuriate the public or angle them to do so, and they under play, as much as possible, the large quantity of good things that happen in the city and in the world in general. So there you have the truth about the situation. Thank you Chicago Tribune for finally, after months, driving me to say something with your constant, and of course purposeful, slight misreporting, that goes to completely change the context of a given situation. Oh I forgot you're the most trusted name in news, my bad.

Kansas. Texas. Every day a bunch of dumb white people shooting.....Where's the outrage for that? How very one sided of you.

  • I am against senseless crime and violence....be it by a presumed white thug in Kansas or a black or brown gangbanger in Chicago. The difference is we are on pace to have over 700 murders with guns. Wait til these animals are allowed to operate in a more temperant climate.

Tired of receiving Red Plum publications?

While reading over the PPNA newsletter, I saw this about the Red Plum publications. I have been wondering how to stop them, especially as I never signed up to receive them. ;) I am excited to get rid of some waste. I see them all over the neighborhood when walking, usually just piled up or lying in the same place for days. I'm guilty of it myself.

When I just called, I left a message. Unsure of how it will proceed from here, but I'm hopeful.

"Red Plum Paper Litter: We notice a lot of Red Plum advertising papers laying outside on the ground. If you do not wish to receive these advertisements, a helpful neighbor contacted the PPNA to advise that delivery may be stopped by calling 312-222-2928."

Whoever that helpful neighbor is, thank you!!!

cancelling a Red Plum 'subscription'?

Has anyone ever successfully gotten them to stop delivering Red Plum sale papers to your house? I've called in, and I've gone through the online cancellation process outlined on the website... But they keep coming...

CJ - That email address is outdated. It is from before Tribune split into two separate companies. If you email that address, you will get an undeliverable notification. The correct address for Ron Buss is now ronbuss@chicagotribune.com.

For anyone who does contact Ron to get Redplum stopped, just be sure you keep his email address handy. The delivery service may very well start delivering to you again, even after Ron has had them stop, as has happened to me multiple times over the past few years and you will need to ask Ron again to get the deliveries stopped.

203k Contractor Recommendations?

Hi, I was wondering if anyone knows any good contractors who have done 203k renovations. We already closed on our loan and have decided to replace our contractor after the project began very badly. We need a seasoned contractor who has done 203k reno's before and who would we willing to step into our existing project. We are finishing the second floor of our brick bungalow (drywall, flooring, bathroom, 2 beds, skylights, built-ins, new stairs and bannister) as well as replacing floors on main level and basement floor repour with dig down and new HVAC and water heater. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

  • Cristobal,
Can you share who you picked and if it is going better?

The first contractor was Aspire Ventures and I ended up dropping them. Then, I chose Skilled Contracting, Inc. I found them on yelp. The owner/general contractor is Russ Beuchs. The beginning was a bit shaky because it took a while to get things rolling. He has a bunch of other big projects going on. I saw this as a positive originally but it can also be a negative because I was starting to feel like my 85k renovation was a mere side job for him. Now, things are rolling along pretty well. Overall, I am happy with the quality of the work and Russ has made some suggestions that helped me improve my house. Sam, feel free to text me at 773-440-3621 if you want to talk more about the 203k process or if you have other questions.

Electrician/handyman?

I need to move an existing ceiling junction box in a plaster ceiling approximately 8-12 inches for a new light fixture. Any local recommendations for electrician or handyman?

  • Hi, I own a home near Cicero and Belmont. My handy man is Agustin Gil. He is awesome...his work is of great quality, plus, he is reasonably priced, trustworthy, dependable, and cleans up after himself when he is done. I last used him to change out my tub on the second floor. You can reach him at 773.937.3065. Call him for a quote. Hope this helps.

Is Mia's at Berteau and Central closed?

I passed by a few days ago and saw stools up on the counter at a time when it seemed like they should be open. Does anyone know if they are open for business these days? It seemed like they were struggling the last few times we went.

  • Good to know it's a seasonal closing and not closed for good. I find it hard to believe an ice cream shop wouldn't do decent business across from a park. I just wish they had frozen yogurt (Josi's or Pinkberry style). I'd go there far more often. I don't like ice cream.

They have awesome sandwiches in addition to their gelato and ice cream, chris.

Old Nite Cap's location

Does anyone know what's going in where Nite Cap was? Construction on a new facade started this past week, so there must be a new owner/plan. I'll miss all those interesting acts on the marquee for sure though!

  • A beer garden in the back with heavy metal music? Or are they changing their genre? If not - I feel sorry for the neighbors behind them.

  • Oh, man, I loved Nite Cap. This remodel sounds cool but does it mean the end of the live music?

Amazon Books on Southport Hiring & what do you think of them opening a "Brick & Mortar" bookstore?

Two things:
1. What do you think of Amazon Books opening a "Brick & Mortar On Southport?
2. Amazon Books is coming to 3441 N. Southport and they are now hiring. I have no connection but always great to work in the neighborhood and not have to commute downtown. You can browse all available openings here, and just search for Chicago.

    Amazon Books
We've applied Amazon's 20 years of online bookselling experience to build a store that integrates the benefits of offline and online book shopping. Our doors opened November 3, 2015 and it is very much still Day One. We are looking for entrepreneurial, analytical, creative, flexible leaders to help us make Amazon Books the world's most customer-centric bookstore.

Supporting our neighborhood shops is key, and in fact go out of my way to find the last of few local shops. A special shout-out to Barabar's Bookstores -- see below from their website.

    ####
The first Barbara's Bookstore opened on Wells Street in Chicago's Old Town neighborhood in the early 1960's. The closest thing we had to a computer was a plug-in cash register, pen and paper and a staff that knew every book in the store by heart.

The retail book industry has changed dramatically in the five decades since Barbara's beginnings. Along the way, we discovered that Barbara's could coexist with the huge national chains and thrive by finding unique locations and creating personal, full-service stores where you don't expect to find them.

The chain encompasses two types of stores. There are large, neighborhood stores, called Barbara's Bookstore and the smaller, 'niche' stores in high traffic locations like airports and hospitals called Barbara's Bestsellers.

Barbara's has earned a reputation in Chicago for high-quality inventory and informed service. We love books. Twice our stores have been named by the Chicago Tribune as one of the 100 best things about the city. The alternative newspaper, Newcity, has recognized Barbara’s author event schedule as the best in Chicago.

  • I shop on Amazon all the time. Not only is it convenient, but they have the items I'm looking for. When I can, I'll go to a local store, even a local chain. But they don't always carry what I need. There is room for both online and brick and mortal retailers.
