Two dumb kids trying to act tough.

One is a heavy set hispanic (teen?) And a skinny white kid with pants waaay down past his butt. They walked across the street on Grace and Menard, while I drove around them, the skinny one got annoyingly close to my car. He did it with full intention.

Then I found out yesterday, my own mom saw these two walking towards her. They were across the street and once they saw her, they crossed to her side. She rushed to her car and locked the door.

Anyone see this too?

Ralph, it was on Albany near Palmer Square.

  • Spam Alert Don't be selling your used junk up in here, okay?

You refer to these boys as "kids" and "teen?". So it's hard to know what you're dealing with. But, hands down, if you are actually feeling threatened somehow, then you should certainly call the police. Most kids don't go up against multi-ton hunks of steel on wheels. Even if that's their idea of playing and trying to upset adults, it has no place on city streets. It sounds like you can see whether or not they're armed, so why not snap a few photos, roll your windows up, lock your doors, pull over and call the police? Whatever else you do, especially send a message by taking their photographs.

backyard invasion

Hi all,
I am having an issue I need advise on.
We have found in 3 different times, dog poo in our backyard and we don't have any pets. I am looking at getting a camera to record the invader and report to the police but before I do that I wanted to know if any of u know of my options legally. Thanks in advanced :)

  • you could also try a motion activated flood light, that may scare away the nocturnal visitors before they can leave their gift.

  • My dog loves to roll around in random feces he finds in our yard. I just had to bathe him this morning before work because he was wearing it like a necklace.

Air conditioning unit distance from the property line

Are there any rules in Chicago which regulate the distance of air conditioning unit installation from the property line?

New furnaces and new hot water heaters cannot go up the chimney. They're too hot. I had a special lining put in my chimney for the last boiler we put in but that won't work anymore.

Furnace vent pipes must be vented out the roof if they are less than the required feet from a walkway and a property line. The city will enforce if reported. The entire city is out of code in many areas. But the citizens seems to like it that way because they do not get permits and rarely report violations they see in their neighborhoods. Even the aldermans' offices protect their "friends" if violations are reported to them Best way to get this taken care of is to call 311 and report the carbon monoxide spewing. Get a reference number and check back periodically.

Gas Meter change

So just got my notice that People's will be tearing up my neighborhood and destroying my home to move my gas meter to the outside of my house.
I have a finished basement, so has anyone with a finished basement gone through this? (I fear they will just tear it apart and just leave a mess (I pray it is like the water meter, where they installed it AND put in a new access door in the finished wall, THAT was excellent service!)).

They put my meter put outside maybe 6 - 10 years ago. No fuss. They were happy to put the meter on the side of the house, beyond the chimney so it is invisible from the street. And they used one of several paint colors on it so it more ore less harmonizes with the brick. They put the new pipe in right next to the furnace and hot water tank so the connecting was minimal. They took out the old meter and some pipe and a second crew came later to replace the damaged plasterboard section. A landscaping crew reset the dirt from the narrow trench between the street and the house. They threw down seed. By a month later you'd never know the thing happened.

I wish I could have changed the owner's mind on keeping the cat indoors, but unfortunately he feels it's completely ok to let the cat roam around and doesn't seem open to putting in the effort to keep the cat inside. And as the owner of the pet that is 100% his choice. All we can do as neighbors is keep an eye out for our furry friends, help them if they are distressed and attempt to educate others on the dangers of keeping pets outdoors, especially in the city. Several kids who brought the cat to us for help are also getting a lesson in what to do and that pets should be kept indoors... so I will take that as a small victory. I have 3 cats myself who are strictly indoor cats who are chipped and wear collars and we take every precaution to make sure they stay inside (one of which was a CACC rescue that had a life on the streets before we got him so he knows how good he's got things now... lol).

Looking for Short Term Housing in Portage Park

My husband and I will be having extensive work done on our house this fall and it looks like we will need to live elsewhere while it's being done. We don't have a hard time frame yet, but we're expecting it will be from 4-6 weeks, sometime after Labor Day.

We live in Portage Park and would like to find something close by, if possible. We will also have our very quiet, 12 year old Labrador Retriever with us. I've looked into Airbnb, HomeAway, and Craigslist, but found nothing that would accommodate us, unfortunately. Anyone have any ideas for us?

  • i love spell check,,,,,

  • Thank you, kittyhop. Last word from the contractor is that the work will take 4-5 weeks, so I am trying to prepare for a little overage-- I've never heard of contractor work coming in on time, either. I'm also going to look into that insurance thing, as Dale S. pointed out. I will post back when I have a better handle on my timeframe. Btw my dog said to tell you that she's always up for a little extra spoiling. :)

I got a letter from CE a couple of weeks ago informing me that they were installing smart meters in my area, and made a point of getting my current phone number to let me know in advance when they were going to be cutting my power. Good customer service, right?

Today I was on the computer when everything suddenly went dark. Checked the breakers then the meter. Someone had written "Repaired 6-8-16" on it. Looked out front and found the contractor sitting in his van chatting on the phone. He claimed he rang my bell first (Yeah, right! The bell is 8 feet from my desk and loud enough to be heard from the other end of the basement.) 5 minutes later another tech shows up and cuts my power again (the computer and DVR are still acting weird.)

I just wanted to warn the others here that ComEd and their contractors do not seem to be honoring their promise of providing advance notice, and if you have sensitive electronics, turn them off before leaving for work.

  • Deutsch portage36

i think the smart meter only benefits com ed. if they want to put one in, make them pay for everything. if they won't pay, tell them to bad.

  • cpk

They are practically forcing you to get the smart meter. If you don't, you have to pay an extra $26.00 on your electric bill every month. I call that blackmail. They constantly send me notices to have the current meter moved so they can put a new one in. I think this is a case for Pam Zekman.

Dermatologist Recommendations

Can someone please recommend a dermatologist in the Portage Park area?

  • Sounds like the full body skin check Dr.K did is the sort of old-school evaluation my last derma visit completely lacked. A skin doctor who doesn't look at all your skin when you're clearly there for a skin-cancer screening; nuts!
But if I had a "seriously huge cauliflower" growth somewhere less discreet than a toe, say on my jawline, I'd want a referral to a plastic surgeon over an office excision.

  • smartypants LifeLongCityGirl

NW, ha ha!! I agree. But Dr. K did spend a lot of time explaining to us why he was treating the wart as cautiously as he did (on the toe he was afraid that certain treatments could permanently inhibit walking for my son) and he squeezed us in before his office hours had even begun so that my son could make it to his baseball game. Amazing thorough, knowledgeable, caring doctor. I would trust him with my life.

    >we have a vertical crack going through several steps. It is not very large, but has crept up our stairs over the past year"

Sadly this is almost certainly a problem substantially beyond patching because the underlying footings are probably shifting. If this is a classic Chicago bungalow with side walls made of bricks many bungalows have this problem because the original architectural design throws some of the building's extra weight onto the steps' sidewalls. And they don't have the right footings to handle the extra weight. Even if that's not true for your house, you don't have a choice. The rapidly developing vertical cracks tell you the foundation levels are failing. You have to take out the old steps, reset the underlying rubble and pour a new set of steps. If your have a brick side wall there might be more. Ask and you shall hear.

We’ve had many questions from our Portage Park neighbors about the actual steps needed to create their own club and even received emails from our fellow Chicagoans on the south and west sides asking for guidance organizing their community for a better quality of life. I’m excited to discuss our experiences and share this information through future ward-sponsored events but as I have had so many emails asking for help, I’ve decided there is no time to wait. What follows is a written out a simple information sheet on what we did and what worked for us. Please understand that this information is only a guide and there is no one way to start, for honestly, the biggest challenge was simply knocking on our neighbor’s doors and starting the conversation. If you have questions please feel free to PM me or email me at eddyblockclub@gmail.com. A public dropbox file can be found here:

https://www.dropbox.com/s/fe85c8jehsuvcpk/How%20to%20Start%20a%20Block%20Club.pdf?dl=0

I hope to print and distribute this in brochure format ASAP to local businesses so if you own a local business and would like some brochures, please let me know and I will add you to the drop off list.

Thanks so much for your time and interest, and remember, together, we can build a better, safer community, one block at a time!

So people remember you can list let's say your 300k home for 500k or even for $1. It will sell for the amount people want to pay or what the appraisal is going to be. That's it. Simple.

"The ethics forms ask legislators to “list the name and instrument of ownership in any entity doing business in the state of Illinois in which [their] ownership interest” is worth more than $5,000 or from which they made more than $1,200 during the past year."

I can definitely see his confusion.

I don't know if this is Trump weariness or not but I don't see fire here. Just messiness, like in all human lives.

He doesn't owe money to anyone he just didn't disclose, what he earned from his political friends, properly. We all know his political connections. Didn't bother us when we voted for him. Why would this change it?

Also the article is written in a language that alleges what it can't prove. They state he complained about lack of paycheck. But his business got paid $700K from other politicians since 2005. But he says he's earning less than 20% profit from it. So he was paid somewhere around $12K a year. And now the baloon has no air... Same information. Told 2 different ways. His other paycheck from the law-firm is something that could generate envy and anger that he complained about lack of paycheck from the state. This cannot.

    So sleaze alleged, nothing proved.

But the question is: is someone going to challenge him for the seat next election? Is that why this article?

I take my dog to Found twice a week. It would be great to have something closer. What I like about Found is they don't just let all the dogs loose in a big play group. They evaluate each dog and match them with the best suited playmates. In the beginning, my dog was leashed and in a small group with dogs that had good non-reactive temperaments. Now he does one-on-one play dates with female dogs only, most of the time. I can't find another place that does this. I have 3 or 4 friends that also have dogs that wouldn't do well in traditional large format daycares, and they all go to Found and their dogs thrive there. They charge $30/day and I have to block out our days a month in advance. Definitely a need for daycare for those of us "difficult" dogs.

Where to begin? Unprofessionalism via bad communication, disorganization & false promises. Inadequacy by negligence. Ineptitude by poor craftsmanship.

- Paid him 50% down and an extra $1,000 and received less than half of the work complete (plenty of which needs to be repaired as the quality was extremely poor)
- Less-than-half of the work was “completed” in 2.5 weeks when “3 to 4 days of work” was what we were initially told

- Many promised work days that resulted in “no-shows” with no explanation given
- Damage done at site
- Discord amongst employees and “he said/she said” back channel communication
- Bad communication including: raising voice to customer, not answering calls or texts, not reaching out when absent from scheduled work day, full voicemail box)
- Ignored addressed inconsistencies/concerns with the work-to-date

I wouldn’t recommend this “company” to anyone and would, in fact, highly advise anyone looking for work done to NOT go with them.

Good call, DarkAngel. I had used Chase QuickPay and immediately tried to redact it but was unable to. I'm glad that you can at least see the experience we had with Colletta and make your decision based off of that.

  • File a complaint with small claims court. You can get three times your costs, court cost and fees and maybe more! Cost about $80 to file. Take your complaint up to the law library and write up a solid complaint.

Stolen flowers 🌺

Who ever is stealing my plants from the Porch just ask I can give u seeds n u can grow ur own. Is this happening to anyone else. Twice they stole plants from me n 3 of my neighbors down the block plants were stolen from them and one plant was dug up rite in front of the house. Boy O boy if u can't afford plants 🌱

  • Someone should put out some nice pots and figure out how to hook up electricity to them so that they would be discouraged from stealing anymore after they are electrocuted.

  • NW-sider, that is my neighbor and he is the sweetest man! These people are sick! I wish we could have it spray ghost pepper spray in their face when they pull on them!

Dark Chocolate Ganache Glazed Layer Cake - WOW!

Holy cow!! Friends took us to Lutz Bakery & Cafe for cake and coffee in their private garden. Anyone who loves dark chocolate cake and ganache glaze and hasn't tried Lutz's, it's worth grabbing a slice... best cake I've ever had. Will be returning for certain.
Anyone have other local spots and fav fare to share?

  • I went to mother cluckers today and had pulled pork sandwich, with a side of mash potatoes...great!

but just so you know if you are going there today, their pop fountain is down so I had to drink water... I put some equal packets in it but it just tasted like sweetened water.

  • IU^ + lemon wedges and voila: lemonade. :-)

Anyone giving away plants

I moved to a new house in september and i dont have a budget to buy plants for the house. If anyone has some plants they want to get rid of please let me know

Thank you so much

  • Handyman Rich Fixing, Building, Taking Things Apart = Enjoyment

If you join the portage park garden club, frequently there are notices of plants being given away. Garden folks are always moving plants around or chamging things, and most of them know whats invasive, what blooms when, & which plants dont play well with others.

  • Thank you handyman
    I will do that

Fireworks

Near Dakin and Laramie. At least 4 big ones just now. Anyone find who was setting them off? Really sick of the late night ones, thanks a lot for waking up my infant.

  • These morons have enough $$$ to buy professional-grade fireworks yet they use their link card for groceries...hmmm???

  • So I guess the clerk only sells fireworks to people that have a link card? Or only link card users have access to fireworks ? Am confused here . All this time I thought anybody could be a moron/disrespectful neighbor . Now i see they also have to be link card users / abusers .

New Mexican Restaurant

Hey Everyone,

Noticed a sign a few doors down from the Binny's (in the old Pineda's Taco spot) that a Mexican restaurant is opening soon.

This little shopping center is really shaping up to be a great place. Looking forward to it.

  • 4901 W Irving Park is the address of the gym that opened. The rest of the businesses I've been posting about ( too much, I know!) are in the same shopping center between Lamon and Lavergne.

  • joanie 20+ year Resident of Jefferson Park

    Good to know, thanks.
