graffiti found on garage doors and fences

Took a stroll to Panera Bread while walking down Glenlake Ave and to my disgust, I saw graffiti gang symbols on neighbors' fences and garage doors in the alley between Christiana and Jersey. I took pics and reported the vandalism online thru the City of Chicago services website: http://www.cityofchicago.org/city/en/depts/streets/provdrs/graffiti_blasters.html

  • robin in WRP Tired, very tired

Posting graffiti photos on public websites only strokes the egos of the tagger / gang; please don't do this again. The photos should be sent to CAPS; the police track them

  • Sheryl 60659 Peterson Park resident

Thanks Robin...just wanted my fellow Peterson Park neighbors to be aware of the vandalism. Didn't know the police track this stuff..didn't think they would have time to do something like that.

gun shots or illegal fireworks at 2:00am???

Anyone else in Peterson Park hear the loud noises that could either be gun shots or fireworks? Whatever they were, I want to do something about it since my dog and I jumped out of bed and he barked his head off. Call 311 or 911??

"Sharon Hahs: No Eminent Domain Land Seizure for NEIU "University Village"

Hi!

I just signed the petition "Sharon Hahs: No Eminent Domain Land Seizure for NEIU "University Village"" on Change.org.

It's important. Will you sign it too? Here's the link:

Thanks!

Richard

  • Agreed, signed, posted to FB. As a recent NEIU graduate, I'm well aware they have tons of land not being used.
In addition to this- there is also all of the baseball diamonds, tennis court areas they can use as they discontinued the I sports program in the mid nineties.

40th Ward Website Finally Addresses Neighbors' Disgust Over O'Hare Jet Noise

On June 23, 2014, Ald. O'Connor's website finally addressed the "air traffic concerns" that have his residents shutting windows and abandoning their backyards just to block out the new jet noise:

"A few neighbors have expressed an interest in the controversy surrounding the addition of flights and increased air noise going in and out of O’Hare Airport as a result of additional runway configurations.

This interest has also increased a bit given recent reports wherein it has been stated that the FAA gave incorrect data as it relates to new traffic patterns and the noise that would be generated."

The Alderman says he's attended behind-the-scenes "working meetings" (Mayor's floor leader!) on how to confront the FAA and "understand the truth surrounding the FAA data."

Hurray that O'Connor finally acknowledges his residents' concern about the noise even though he downplays the extent of the concern. Unfortunately, he's in lock-step with the Mayor in casting the FAA as the only player with any power to improve the situation. That's unlikely. Witness the inaction of the outgoing (thank heavens!) City Department of Aviation Commissioner Rosemarie Andolino. Last year, lawmakers asked her (not the FAA) to bolster the Fly Quiet initiative that requests airlines to reduce their noise during certain hours. She refused (for whatever reason), but she never claimed the FAA held all the levers.

O'Connor knows that his residents are not primarily "interested in the controversy" with the FAA. We're interested in quieter skies and air traffic flow that's equitable to all communities. We're interested in City Hall finally taking action. Let's not construct a false narrative where the FAA is the bogeyman and City Hall has no cards to play.

I'm glad O'Connor finally acknowledges this serious issue. Now he should be more aggressive in finding ways for the city to create the solution.

The Alderman wants people to call his office with complaints, not only the ONCC complaint line, which you can access easily via FAiR's website. When you call O'Connor, if his staff directs you to Congressman Quigley's office, hold your ground and tell him that you want to give the alderman your name and the message of how upset you are about the noise.

I invite you to join the Fair Allocation in Runways (FAiR) Coalition, a citizen-led initiative that gathers democratically. We are a rapidly growing coalition of citizens and civics on Chicago's NW side and near NW suburbs. www.fairchicago.org

    What is FAiR about?

FAiR seeks a real voice at O'Hare to secure an equitable distribution of takeoffs and landings, day and night, east and west, and using all existing runways including the diagonals. FAiR is the leading voice for residents on this issue.

    What does FAiR believe?

It is our Coalition's experience that citizens and civic organizations concerned about the severe impact on our communities from increased noise and air pollution occurring as a result of the new October 2013 runway configurations have not had a real seat at the table in the development and implementation of how O'Hare takeoff and landing patterns were designed. FAiR supports the economic engine that is O'Hare, but we believe that as our neighbor, the airport must work with the community to determine when and where those engines fly over our homes, yards, schools, parks and businesses. FAiR's goal is a better future founded upon a real voice for communities and solutions arising out of collaboration between the citizenry and our government. Solutions to these types of challenges are not solely technical in nature but are more importantly democratic in substance.

    What can you do?

As a neighbor, resident and fellow citizen, I ask you to join FAiR at www.fairchicago.org. Then...

    * Sign our online petition at www.fairchicago.org
    * Distribute FAiR Door Hangers
    * Report your noise complaints which can be done directly through our website at www.fairchicago.org
    * Put up a FAiR yard sign
    * Tell your neighbors about how our democracy has again been imperiled
    * Become active with FAiR in your community

Still have questions? Please ask. Jac Charlier - jac.charlier@gmail.com See you around our neighborhood.

3 levels of govt signed off on the O'Hare expansion, and although our local reps/aldermen are now pointing the finger to state reps, I rely on my alderman to fight for my neighborhood's quality of life. As floor leader and 40th Ward alderman, Pat O'Connor had multiple opportunities to sound the alarm and stop this expansion. 1) when the hearings were clearly a sham; 2) when FAA drastically changed its data; and 3) in October when the onslaught began. Instead, he smoothed the way for passage. This is nothing short of an outrage. We need aldermen who represent their residents, not rubber stamp whatever the Mayor wants.

  • Mather High School reviewed by a student

Mather isn't the greatest school academic wise, but honestly what you put in determines your outcome. I just graduated and will be attending UIC's Honor College this fall. I was also accepted to Depaul and Loyola. Mather is a great school in terms of diversity and has lots of resources for students. If all you plan on doing is partying and can't muster up a basic level of respect for your teachers, just don't go to high school. I loved my time at Mather. I made great friends and had some great teachers. Mather used to be bad, but the principal is truly invested in fixing Mather's reputation. Anywhere you go in life, you will have to work hard to actually succeed. Don't just go in thinking it's no use to even try to do well.
