Yep- the kids are supposed to complete 40 hours of service learning to graduate HS. Some do much more. I can't say that it is all as meaningful as this project, but many kids really seize the opportunity.

Korea Town on Bryn Mawr: Living, dying or dead?
All the empty storefronts on Bryn Mawr west of the river makes me question whether the area is Korea Town in name only. A sign of the economic depression or of the pace of the exodus of Korean-Americans from the City to the suburbs? When the area comes back, will it have a Korean-American profile or will it be something new? I think the City's the richer for the strong presence of Korean-Americans here.

Mather High School reviewed by a parent
Mather High School (5835 N Lincoln Av)Forget it if your child has an IEP. The teachers are grt! But the staff that write the IEPS are incompetent and not thorough, which makes their IEPS not up to standard. Many inconsistencies as well as improperly completed transition portions. If you have a voice_spk up. If you need to get their attention, post your emails to them on the mayors web pages. If you need contacts for the higher up for getting results, email me, i have them. At this point, just this yr_as my son is due to graduate _they are covering their tracks and trying to become compliant in the last month of school. What a joke. Know your rights, go over any IEP you rcve, watch out for ambiguous language and keep on them. Thankfully i have time to file "due process". They were disciplined by Area 19 as being "unresponsive" but it took 4 yrs., too little to late. Had I been thu this process prior, I would have known. Ask me and I can fill you in.

Jamieson Elementary School reviewed by a parent
Jamieson Elementary School (5650 N Mozart St)This school has gone downhill since Baughman took over. I caught him in lies and he was unresponsive to concerns. He is a figure head and I hope he is voted out. Very misleading fellow. On the other hand, the asst VP is responsive, quick to act and is fully committed to the parents and children. Don t fool yourself on the school being safe. There are just as many bullies and 5 on 1 fights as any other school The first and second grade children are packed into a small trailer and do not leave the room for lunch. Many lunches are eaten in the hallways. Not enough room to accommodate the children but the principle cut a bogus deal for a cell phone tower that did nothing to improve the budget As far as the SpEd teacher, Mr Joe_ forget having your child s IEP adhered to or him to put forth any effort. Look a little better. Been there_done that There ARE a few grt teachers there. Look for them :)

Graffiti at 5800 N Lincoln
I can't be the only person who noticed and called the Alderman's office about this graffiti but when I called they acted like they hadn't heard of it.
Sometime last week or this weekend someone vandalized several buildings around 5800 N Lincoln (at Francisco) and it continues down the alley. It is the back of several businesses. I also noticed that a homeowner's garage door was tagged. This is horrible. The tags were things like "BOTM" and "RLW". There was also a cartoon face. I'm thinking that these might just be kids from the high school and not gang related.... I'm hoping anyway. Anyone else know anything about those tags in particular?
Thanks! SBEN

Mather High School reviewed by a parent
Mather High School (5835 N Lincoln Av)I don't understand why this school isn't one of the schools that is being closed down by the Mayor. There are some lazy teachers, case managers, and counselors who shouldn't be teaching or involved with children. The principal and two assistant principals are arrogant and self-center who probably got the job by knowing someone. Many gang fights and police presence- which is a good thing because of the gangs there. Yes the school has a lot of sport programs, but what good is it if your children will not be prepared for college or the real world?

Rogers Park Dog Park closed?
Walked by the dog park near Devon Hardware at Bosworth and Schreiber and noticed the gates were all locked open with bike locks. I've seen some football equipment in there on occasion, but it's not football season. Is there a reason why this dog park is effectively closed for buisness? I've been thinking of adopting a dog, and the close proximity of this park is a big factor. Who runs this park? How can I learn more about it's "hours"?

It USED to be a green dog park that functioned under the radar of the CPD downtown, but with the Schrieber Park Supt blessing. The city does not want green dog parks...(who knows why?). There was an email list, and Dan (the lead guy), and other volunteers took care of the grass, built benches, there were bbq's and community building efforts. Last I heard they were trying to work with that park's council to identify new space somewhere within Schreiber. Always wondered why parents would let their kids play on the grass that was dog park...even if "everything" was picked up...They really have no open fields for team sports.

Bernard (police beat 2424) Police Beat Facilitator in Beat 2424Rogers Park's only official dog park is at Pottawattomie Park (Rogers and Wolcott ... though the dog park is closer to Fargo and Wolcott) ... it is OPEN.
Schreiber, as others have noted above, has been an "unofficial" dog park. Some neighbors like the space, some complain about the dogs....

The Park District, based on my involvement in getting Pottawattomie Park dog park open, definitely does not like "green spaces." They argue those spaces are unsanitary (harder to pick up waste and clean ... dog parks are required to be cleaned quarterly, including hosed down) ... and the park district argues that the grass is quickly destroyed which leads to other problems.
Best to go to one of the official dog parks or work to convert space to an official dog park.

New Community Garden!
In 2010, volunteers built the Peterson Garden Project as a single garden on the site of an original 1942 Victory Garden. This year, Peterson Garden is opening 5 new community gardens, including one in North Park:
Stars Garden
• On the northwest corner of Lincoln and Jersey
• In partnership with 50th Ward Alderman Debra Silverstein
Registration for plots in this gardens is now open. Visit the Peterson Garden Project website at www.petersongarden.org for full details and registration information.
Beds cost $65. This price covers the cost of the bed and organic soil and other materials. Free classes will be offered to teach adults and children how to grow food. Some beds will be reserved to grow food for a local food pantry.

From New Bike Racks - where did they come from?:
"Just curious about the new bike racks you see through Lakeview. They are cool colors and in the shape of a bike. I like them and just wondering if they were purchased by the city or some how locally. Any comments would be helpful?"

My sense is that a lot of the Korean population has moved out to the suburbs. Lawrence Ave through Albany Park (formerly known as honorary Seoul Blvd. Not sure if that's still the case or not.) used to be solidly Korean up through the mid nineties and there isn't even a Korean market left in that area anymore. I sorely miss the Clark Market that used to be on Kedzie just north of Lawrence. They had wonderful take-out of fresh-made snacks and salads and a great fish counter. It's now a very, very good Middle-Eastern grocery store but I still miss the Korean food.
