Car Broken Into

They got me! Last night someone broke into my car and went thru everything. It must not have been a a crack head, because they didn’t take my loose change I had inside my arm rest. Didn’t take car charger, fishing poles nothing that I can think of. It might have been some teen, just being stupid… For now on ,I’m going to empty out my car , and leave the doors unlocked so I won’t have to pay for a window…lol

I feel your pain, Debra. I got hit Wednesday night or Thursday morning. Guess I'll stop being lazy and park in the garage.

  • We've had two cars that have been "gone through" in our secured parking lot. It's too easy to get in despite the gate.

I'm sure neither of my neighbors reported anything, did you file a report? Hoping they'll notice a pattern and issue a community alert.

Volunteer work

Two week ago, I wanted to do some volunteer work at the VA center on 55th and King Drive.
So I go inside and the lady ask me to fill out some paper work, I sat down and she sits down right beside me to make sure I filled out everything. On this paper work it asks for your DOB, SS# and home address. I told her that I’m not putting that info down; she begins to tell me, you...

On this paper work it asks for your DOB, SS# and home address. I told her that I’m not putting that info down; she begins to tell me, you can’t volunteer here if you don’t give that info, because we need to do a back ground check and also see if you qualify for any programs…WHAT!!!! I only want to help with the gardening, LOL
Needless to say I DIDN’T give my info but she called me and asked me can I show up at 7am Saturday morning, I said ok “even though that’s kind of early” but I was there at 7:00am. No one was there’ I knock on the door, window and nothing…… I’m waiting 7:30am nothing still waiting 8:00am nothing……I left and headed back at 9:00am STILL NOTHING …..10:30 am I received a phone call asking me if I was going to show….I ask them what happen. They tells me the lady gave me the wrong info….I stopped in on the way to my hair appointment and seen the lady outside, she didn’t bother to say sorry or even say hi, she looks at me and roll her eyes and walks off…..WHAT IS GOING ON!!!! Things we have to go through when we’re just trying to help… Last month I volunteer at the Washington park nature restoration, I think I’m going to stick with them because I learn so much and the group of people that I worked with was the BEST…..and they were there, on time with supplies and ready to work………Thanks

  • Debra, thank you so much for this wonderful compliment about the Washington Park Conservancy's work. We are dedicated to the community and Washington Park's Natural World.

Please continue to join us on our once per month workdays, every third Saturday from 9 to Noon, meet us at the Fountain of Time.

I want to connect you to other people, when you get the chance, email me at wpconservancy@gmail.com.

  • Wow, sorry to hear that Debra. We're always looking for people to help at the Glass Slipper Project or at Big Brothers Big Sisters if you're looking for some additional volunteer opportunites.

  • sad to say, I have heard similar stories from friends who wanted to volunteer at other places. Some places are organized and some are not. The key is to find an organization that works for you - where you can use your talents efficiently. Sounds like there are some other good places - concentrate on those. Kudos to you for volunteering.

Unknown flying object

The other night while lying in my bed I heard a noise. I turned on the lights to investigate and out of the darkness from my sunroom area; something was flying towards me. I then moved the night stand to try and get glimpse of what it was, before I can view it, it flew up and out my bedroom door. Now I am unable to find whatever it was, everyone is telling me that it was a bat, so I search the whole house looking in closets, ceiling, light fixtures, under tables, window seals….Est.
I’m called 311 to try and find out what should I do, I open up all the window hoping it will leave and now in thinking should I go get a rabies shots? Because I’m not sure how long it been in my house…..Help what would you do? Unknown flying objects glimpsed

I'm glad you figured out what it was...and that it's not a bat! Thank goodness :)

  • Not that this was funny, but I have to admit I laughed reading this. I don't believe in ANYTHING living my my house that doesn't pay mortgage so I would have freaked out regardless of it being a bat or a giant moth.

56th King Drive

Yesterday I was in my yard pulling weeds and a young man, open my gate and walked onto my porch to retrieve his drugs stach that he was hiding. I told him to take his @%$% down the street, and he turns around and say “F/U you can’t tell me what to do, you don’t know who the f&*% you’re talking to” He then told me to watch my back B&*#, because he’s coming back, and make sure I sleep...

As he was crossing the street he turns around to make a hand jester of a gun, pointing it at me.
I then called the cops and the young man hands over his stach to another young man with dread lock and he started to run down the street. The Cops were out within 4 Min, they frisked the young man that I had words with, but the drugs were already gone. ……….. This is an ongoing battle, and thank God my daughter is away at college, because she will never want to leave the house. I’m about to invest in a huge DOG….lol

  • Sorry that happened o you, Debra.

That's awful. I went to a Caps meeting recently and something like that happened and the cops frisked the guy who had already handed over the stolen item and the cops uncovered nothing and just left.

Alley lights

It's a shame that street lights cannot remain functioning for more than a day. The police can't seem to stop the activity going on in the alley on 64th & Ellis and the residents don't seem to care. What good is the blue light camera if the police don't check them and respond when called?

Interested in Community Garden

We have vacant lots near Bishops and 64th (Englewood). We don't live in that area but we would like to utilize these lots and turn them into community garden. Are there websites provided by the City of Chicago or Non-profit organization which can be helpful to start community garden? How to get the people who live near these lots to be involved since we don't live there? Your input/idea is very much appreciated.

I am also a member of Greater Englewood Garden Association which recently gave out free seeds to members and holds helpful and fun gardening workshops for residents and community gardeners. Their next meeting is Saturday April 14th at Kelly Branch Library. They are also an excellent and friendly resource for Englewood residents.

Please keep me posted on your progress neighbor, as we on 61st and Wood are also working to get our community garden up and running this summer.

Hope this info helps as well.

"Just curious about the new bike racks you see through Lakeview. They are cool colors and in the shape of a bike. I like them and just wondering if they were purchased by the city or some how locally. Any comments would be helpful?"
