Fire Service?

They leave by themselves, with no more fanfare than the rumble of their engine and the rolling lights.

I'm more curious than anything else, especially since it seems to happen with some frequency, as well as the day of the week and the time of night. Does anyone know, does the CFD make housecalls for...I don't even know what this would be. Maybe helping the guy in the wheelchair up to his apartment?

On a weekly basis i would get stuck behind a firetruck while picking my daugther up. They would take a hefty woman in a wheelchair up to her apartment while two grown men with her just watch them. Go figure city resources hard at work.

  • It isn't the best solution, but there is VERY limited handicapped-accessible housing available. I can't imagine trying to get around the city in a wheel chair.

Is logan square sustainable?

Honking in Alley Crisis

Is honking in alleys so necessary? I do not do it. I stop my car before the sidewalk and then slowly pull out when I see the path is clear of pedestrians.

I know Logan Square doesn't revolve around my sleeping needs but I work a third shift sorta and I go to bed and there is always some crazy weird person driving 25MPH down the alley and honking 50FT before the sidewalk, sometimes like 5 honks. This starts at 7am. This process is also unsafe for pedestrians, it makes the driver feel they don't have to stop and can just speed through. It wakes me up. I'm sleep deprived. I feel insane. It's also noise pollution. Quit polluting. bah

Happie you are in a residential neighborhood right next to homes. Wouldn't just coming out slowly do the same thing without disturbing the people right next to the alley?

  • Lana Avondale

I don't think Happie has seen the behavior we're discussing. We are NOT complaining about people driving slow down the alley then lightly tapping the horn when they approach the sidewalk or blind intersection.

I agree with RAKARWOWSKI and most of what Nolan is saying . It is easy for those who have never been on the job to criticize . The problem with Police is that the overwhelming majority try to do the job right . 1 bad cop destroys it for the whole lot of them . The bad ones should be rooted out faster so the good ones don't have to look over their shoulders . The Police dept is also woefully undermanned it is laughable . Rahm gets in and wants to cut the Police budget . He doesn't care about Public safety . With a Dept that is already undermanned there should be no cuts . With all the tax increases and new revenue streams they should find the money .

Boy, 12, gunned down on South Side

A 19-year-old man refused to cooperate with investigators after getting shot in the abdomen in the Logan Square neighborhood, police said. He was shot on the 2700 block of West Francis Place about 2:15 a.m. Additional information about the shooting wasn't available.

A 35-year-old man died after he was shot in the head and chest on the South Side about midnight, on the 10100 block of South Michigan Avenue, police said. The man, identified as Dwayne Billingsley, was approached by someone who emerged from a gangway, police said.

Logan Square Food and Liquor Closed?

Was wondering if anyone knows why the Logan Sqaure Liquor across the street from Masa Azul is closed. I know it was for sale forever on the MLS ... anyone know if it sold? That would be fantastic cause that building is in horrible shape!

Loading loading

  • It is a shame that it is closing. The surviving family worked very hard to sustain the business after the owner was shot and killed in a street robbery nearby, in front of his home, a number of years ago. After the murder, they totally revamped the store. Personally, I and my family thank them for their hard work and dedication to the community for so long. We wish them well.

  • Renee Former Logan'er, current Belmont Gardens homeowner

They were all really nice people, especially Hector and Adelaide. The place wasn't fancy, but I always felt good supporting them.

  • The back story is really interesting and I am sure the family is great. Anytime we went in, they were always very sweet. It is still listed, so not sure that it sold. But yeah, def been shuddered all week.

Good vet within walking distance of Logan & California?

I'm moving to Logan and California at the end of the month and need to find a place to take my two beloved kitties. I know there's a vet on Milwaukee near the Square, but it looks like they get awful reviews on Yelp. Any suggestions? Walking distance is preferred (no car), but quick bus or train ride is okay too.

I use at-home vet care since my cat has asthma and freaks out in the car to the point where he has to go into an oxygen tent the second we get to the vet. I would recommend Dr Alisse Mawrence, The Traveling Vet, 773.575.7387 and Dr Alissa Shulkin, Chicago Veterinary Care, 312.371.9839. I've used them both and while they are more expensive, it has worked out well for my cat, not having to leave the house and take a car ride.

I have to chime in and lend my vote to Cat Hospital of Chicago. Dr. Pohl, in particular, is amazing. When our beloved kitty was ill last year, she did what was the most comprehensive physical exam I have ever seen a vet do. She was incredibly thorough and compassionate through our experience. She explained everything, was very upfront about costs, and, most of all, she never made me that she was rushed for time. Sadly, through no fault of the hospital's (he was too far advanced in his illness), we lost our precious kitty.

They were gracious, warm, patient to the end with our questions. We received a beautiful condolence card from her and the staff as well as follow-up phone calls. We still take our other cat there, and she is always well-treated. We always receive follow-up calls to see how she is coming along. When you telephone, without fail, the staff is incredibly warm and accommodating. We have had our kitties a long time and have moved all around the country. I have never had such wonderful, thorough, and knowledgeable vets taking care of them.

    Highly recommend.

Parent was there unseen by the perp, and called police. This was shortly after the bell rung and there where many parents and children (who were not school aged) in the vicinity. To be realistic, we don't ALWAYS have our eyes on our kids every move, Let's show some grace to our neighbors. As children get independant or if there is an age gap we may let one play on a swing while one is on the baseball field because its age appropriate and healthy, This mom like many moms was on it but not able to anticiapte it, but she proected her child and made a report to help us protect ours, just like you did by giving us the site Thank you very much for the resource!

  • I didn't see anything in the news about it or the newspaper. Too much about NATO and the protesters which I could care less about. I care about my community and what is happening to our children. Is there any info in regards to description, car, etc?

I hope someone did offer to make a phone call for him though. You never truly know what is going on with someone and being so possessive of our gadgets shouldn't come before compassion.

  • Rats most definitely build underground burrows, usually with a number of bolt holes to give them multiple avenues of escape. We had a few visible burrow entrances in our backyard when we bought our house and I dropped smoke bombs in them to clear them out (I also used a shop vac in reverse to force the smoke through the whole system). Smoke was coming out of holes all over our yard and also in our neighbors' yards. It was amazing how extensive the tunnel system was.

On the way past the corner of Altgeld and Drake Avenue, he was accosted by two guys in hoodies with a gun. He had started running toward home before he even saw the gun. One of them yelled for him to stop, and then shot at him twice, as they chased him down the block. He called the police when he got home, and when the police arrived, they said that there had been another recent shooting in our neighborhood.

In addition to this, I heard gunfire on Thursday night at about midnight, and then last night at two in the morning, and called the police both times. Supposedly, the more we call, the more they patrol...

Just wanted everyone to know. Also, please forward this.

Cortland and Armitage Four-Way Stop

Hello,

Anyone else have an issue with the drivers not stopping at the Cortland and Armitage 4-way stop. I cannot tell you how many times I have almost been in serious accidents. I feel that more tickets or patrolling is potentially needed. Just thought I would see if I am alone on this. Thanks!

Loading loading

  • Maybe it's something that needs to be addressed with the alderman or police because if there is no school / red light camera then the problem would persist. Cortland is also a very narrow street by Central Park, this is also a concern for me because I park my car on the street and fear that one day someone may damage it and not stop. Someone already bumped my wife's car (thank God it was a minor scratch) and they didn't stop.
