Crime in Albany Park

I moved to this area about two years ago and I might have to move cause the crime is getting worst. Why did some kids come on private property and just bust a mans new car windows out for no reason at all. It was a camera video of this crime and the police will be going over to the local schools in the area to ID these kids.

  • That's sad that people are scared of change. I have a house on the westside that I purchased brand new but had to flee cause of the horrible crime. I will be moving to round lake at the end of the year cause enough is enough.

It breaks my heart ... but I have to admit that AP is no longer my home. I lived there for 45 years and saw SO many different changes, some good, some not so good. The past few years have not been good and it pains me that the place that I called home for most of my life has changed so much. We are losing our home due to foreclosure, but making the decision to leave wasn't as difficult as it would have been a few years ago. We battled gangs and all kinds of problems during all of these years, but because of the increasing violence and change in atmosphere, we felt best to give in and get out. Fifteen years (or so) ago, we battled gangs and won. When apartment buildings switched to condos, the neighborhood became the "must move to" area in Chicago. The diversity was the most wonderful thing I could have given my children. But now? The elementary school that my children attended has gone from exemplary to the bottom of the CPS list. My beater of a cargo van was broken into - they tried to hotwire the wothless hunk of metal!!! The sirens that we have heard nightly have made us uneasy. Our alleys are dark, filthy and frightful. These new gangs and the vandalism that is prominent is like nothing we have ever experienced. We have heard that there are more than 4,000 foreclosures in AP (not sure if those statistics are correct, however). So many houses are up for sale and/or stand empty. We have seen many of the condos revert back to apartments. "For sale" signs have changed back to "for rent". The value of our house was almost halved after the economic crisis a few years back. Is it any wonder that the area is in chaos? :(

Korea Town on Bryn Mawr: Living, dying or dead?

All the empty storefronts on Bryn Mawr west of the river makes me question whether the area is Korea Town in name only. A sign of the economic depression or of the pace of the exodus of Korean-Americans from the City to the suburbs? When the area comes back, will it have a Korean-American profile or will it be something new? I think the City's the richer for the strong presence of Korean-Americans here.

My sense is that a lot of the Korean population has moved out to the suburbs. Lawrence Ave through Albany Park (formerly known as honorary Seoul Blvd. Not sure if that's still the case or not.) used to be solidly Korean up through the mid nineties and there isn't even a Korean market left in that area anymore. I sorely miss the Clark Market that used to be on Kedzie just north of Lawrence. They had wonderful take-out of fresh-made snacks and salads and a great fish counter. It's now a very, very good Middle-Eastern grocery store but I still miss the Korean food.

Hello everyone! I'm relatively new to the area and just adopted a dog back in April from chicago animal control. She was a stray and is about 8 months old now. We think she is a boxer/ maybe pitbull mix. She is a super sweet 45 lb toddler. Not always well behaved then again she was a stray puppy. Two things : I'm looking for someplace to take her to obedience class near home because I don't have a car. We live near montrose and pulaski. Also maybe some advice. She of course as a puppy is super playful and only has me to play with, no other dogs. When she gets really excited she can get kind of nippy and jumps up. I think its because of her lack of suitable playmate. I have a little fenced in yard for her to play in but she desperately needs and wants a doggy friend. Her eyes light up and she gets super excited when we see other dogs. As far as I know there isn't any dog parks near us and I don't dare take her off her leash at the park ( she isn't the greatest with the command "come" yet haha I'm pretty sure she knows it just doesn't want to do it (cause being outside or playing with her toys is way too much fun). Would anyone around my area ( pulaski to kimball/ Lawrence to montrose ) be interested in a doggie play date?

And, Rachel, if you ever decide to take your pup to daycare from time to time - another option (besides The Barking Lot) is Lucky Dog. My dog is always happy to go there - they are really great w/the dogs. I am also very happy w/Mayfair as a vet :)

It is great to hear someone in the area using Milankis they do small animals and do not charge these outrageous fees because they are exotics like the others places do. And the father is such a no frills he will tell you what you don't need. Not sell so much to you. They will even cut nails and clean ears during the exam if you need. The have even opened longer hours for me when needed who else would do that!

Owners Looking for Lost Puppy! PLEASE HELP!

Tiny black chihuahua puppy with a pink collar. Ran away from home near Bernard & Balmoral. Spotted on Spaulding on May 16, then in Hollywood Park.
She was running away from a couple of bicycles who were chasing her on Jersey/Kedzie. Then a girl had her on a rope leash wondering around Hollywood Park asking who was the owner.
As of now she is with another person trying to find me.
Please if anybody has seen her or know of anyone who has taken in a black small chihuahua, please call me. This is the family dog, and she is very much missed.

They are about to pave that block of Carmen and have already poured the oil ready for paving.

However, they have also paved the oil and prepared for paving that very same section of the parkway that caused this disturbance in the first place.

At the very minimum the city should replace the section of pedestrian sidewalk that is missing.

The section between the road and the sidewalk should not be re-paved. Grass can now be restored on this section of the parkway.

If this section is just re-paved like the rest of Carmen Avenue it's only going to be an open invitation to cars to park there, off the street, again blocking the sidewalk and complaints are just going to follow.

Can this re-paving of the parkway be stopped before it gets done?

Before this repaving is done, to a section that is no longer a part of a driveway, the alderman's office should be contacted to see that this isn't repaired improperly.

Speed Limit Cameras on Foster

How can we volunteer to have Foster Avenue, between Elston and Kimball, set as the first area to test the speed-limit cameras?

This section of Foster is clearly posted as a 30 MPH zone, yet because of the large area of parks and little parking there is a very large amount of speeding down this street. It's a real threat to pedestrians, senior citizens, children, bicyclists, and other using the public streets.

This would be a good place to test the system. Speed limit signs are clearly posted along the route and new signs wouldn't even be needed.

Miranda rights relate to criminal law.

Traffic violations are part of civil law.

About 2 hours later, a friend's son was walking the dog and this car pulled up, the driver motioned him to come to the car. The passenger GOT OUT OF THE CAR, started walking toward him and started asking him for directions. My son said nothing to him and immediately ran away from him and ran home. A police report was made.

About 2 months ago, the same described car was in this area and approached another girl. In that incident, there was a man and woman in the car. Male with same long haired description. A police report was made.

What You Can Do

Oh Rogers Park, how I hate to love you.

Albany Park Cyclists?

Hi all,

I'm considering a move from Roger's Park to the Albany Park area, near Argyle and Albany. I'll spare you the typical "what is the area like?" questions, and ask instead, "anyone out there an avid cyclist?" I'd like to get to know more cyclists in the area since I'll be further away from the lake (which is something I'm familiar with and could do with my eyes closed - but don't, obvi :) ). A new route or riding buddy is always welcome.

Thanks!

To the west is the North Branch Trail which takes you up to the Botanic Garden. You can got east to the Green Bay Trail or west to the Skokie Valley Trail.

Only a short way south to Elston, and you can take a marked bike lane to downtown.

Along Lawrence, from Western to a little past Milwaukee is another marked bike lane, with a short distance of "sharrows" instead of a lane between the river and Central Park.

To the lakefront, take Wilson to Lincoln, then a block or two south to Sunnyside one-way east to almost the lake front, jumping up to Lawrence or down to Montrose to finish the trip. Or just take the bike lane on Lawrence to Lincoln and then south to Sunnyside.

No matter where you want to go in Chicago, Albany Park is the best place to start from.

  • AlbanyParker, that's a nice route. Alternatively, you could also use Sheridan Road instead of Green Bay Road. And another +1 for Iron Cycles!

Summer Camp at Eugene Field Park

Eugene Field Park at 5100 N. Ridgeway still has openings for summer camp! They offer daycamp from 9-3pm and Extended Camp (for working families) from 3-6pm. It’s a popular program. Parents can receive 50% off the fee if their child gets free or reduced lunch at school. They would just need to get the lunch letter from school stating they get free or reduced lunch.

Summer Camp lasts Monday, June 25 through Friday, August 3. Ages 6-13. $333 for traditional camp and $167 for extended camp option. Register online chicagoparkdistrict.com or visit the Field House.

Other areas of the city have waitlists for summer camp-- so lets make sure all of our kids have somewhere to be this summer.
