  • Trump is tough? Give me a break! He's been insulated by his wealth for hi whole life! Or do you really think it was heel spurs that kept him from going to 'Nam? Which leg was it again, I don't recall. If you believe that, you've got bigger problems than worrying about tiny segments of the population agitating for their 14th amendment rights.

Alan Snipes -- I'm of the same generation as you and demonstrated against the Viet Nam war. While I agree that it wasn't student demonstrations that stopped the war, the concern of the party in power that the US was becoming ungovernable played some role. An interesting Slate article on the topc from 2007.http://www.slate.com/articles/news_and_politics/history_lesson/2007/01/how_vietnam_really_ended.html

That being said, I would never tell a young person now to just give up and get new reps elected in 2018, essentially saying to go lick your wounds. The women's suffrage movement, the civil rights movement, among others, all attest to the importance of individuals being involved in politics, locally and/or nationally. There are too many of our rights as well as critical programs at risk to be silent. Shortly after November 8, three of our local state reps hosted a panel discussion to an overflow crowd of aobout 350 in an auditorium designed for 200, with speakers from the ACLU, Planned Parenthood, and immigration and LGBTQ rights groups. The take away from the state reps is anytime you have an issue, call your representatives to ask them to vote your way. Petitions and email are mostly useless and snail mail is often not timely, but the staff have to talk to you when you call. In Chicago, many of us have state and national congresspeople that are sympathetic to our views, but there are ways to contact others who aren't 'on our side'. .Note also that some former congressional staffers have produced a guide to making an impact, and ironically, used the tea party's development as an example of effective organizing. The structure, which was razed in 2016, was a noted example of international-style architecture by Gene Summers, a former assistant to Mies van der Rohe, and the Chicago-based-firm, C.F. Murphy Associates. They are best known for designing the 1971 McCormick Place convention center.

Development - Neighbors of West Loop
The West Loop is experiencing an unparalleled level of development over the past several years. With the flourishing growth of office buildings, hotels, and new restaurants in the Fulton Market District, combined with several residential properties in various stages of planning along Washington, Madison, and other thoroughfares south to the Eisenhower Expressway, the pace of West Loop development does not appear to be slowing any time soon.

Father Ignatius D. McDermott, better known as "Father Mac" around here, co-founded Haymarket Center (932 W. Washington) in 1975 as a place where the downtrodden of Skid Row could turn things around...

    Mission & History
Msgr. McDermotts and Dr. West's understanding of addiction as a disease provided the motivation for their call for treatment in lieu of criminalization. This fundamental perspective continues to guide Haymarket Center in pioneering innovative, high quality, community-based, social setting behavioral health programs that are gender responsive, culturally appropriate and population specific.
