Could Once-Gritty Madison Become 'Main Street' In City's Hottest 'Hood?

So many of the West Loop's restaurants and bars — the neighborhood's "eat, dine and party" action — is located farther north on Randolph or Fulton Market, said Chacon, a Realtor whose office is at 1161 W. Madison St.

And while a boom in residential development has brought more foot traffic to the area, Ann Sinclair, owner of The Fig Tree, a boutique gift shop at 1037 W. Madison St., said she hopes Madison Street's indie shops won't disappear as retail chains move in.

Some Madison Street business owners said they were disappointed a Domino's recently opened at 901 W. Madison St. instead of a local restaurant.

Back then, "It was still Skid Row. We had people being shot, we had drive by shootings," said Tomaras, who owns a building at 1018 W. Madison St. Since then, "it's drastically changed."

Could Once-Gritty Madison Become 'Main Street' In City's Hottest 'Hood?
WEST LOOP - As an homage to the street's gritty history as Chicago's Skid Row, a stretch of Madison Street that runs through the West Loop will soon be called by a new name: "Madison Row." The name, part of a larger effort to brand the street, aims to revamp Madison Street into the West Loop's "Main Street."

She sounds like a folk singer. She looks like a folk singer. But Moscow-born indie pop singer Regina Spektor has turned classic folk on its head as a big player on the anti-folk movement. Toying with the tenets set forth by artists such as Joni Mitchell, she writes about simple moments rather than tackling the momentous.

Will McDonald's workers rent these apartments?

Other apartment investors have the same idea. The Aberdeen will face competition from a few multifamily developments nearby, including the Parker Fulton Market, a 227-unit tower at 171 N. Halsted St., and Landmark West Loop, a 300-unit building at 1035 W. Van Buren St.

It's a deal based on a simple mantra: "Follow the jobs." Waterton is counting on pickup in demand for apartments there after McDonald's moves its corporate offices—and about 2,000 jobs—from Oak Brook to a 600,000-square-foot building Sterling Bay is developing at 110 N. Carpenter St.

Man Bites Dog: Downtown Water Tank To Be Saved
We've lamented before about how advances in modern plumbing and fire suppression technology are stripping so many of Chicago's buildings of their rooftop water tanks. Many of the remaining tanks we see adorning the roofs of the city's brick-and-timber buildings are a hundred years old or more. Repairs are expensive.
