More Video Showing Drivers Are No More Likely to Stop at Signs Than Cyclists

Now we’ve got additional footage shot by Streetsblog Chicago reader J. Patrick Lynch that suggests this kind of driver behavior is the rule, rather than the exception, at four-way stop signs. He shot the video Monday at 6:30 p.m. at Adams and Aberdeen in the West Loop.

This article has 1 other Chicago location (Show)

Meanwhile, it’s dangerous by comparison to do the same thing when piloting a fast, multi-ton vehicle with blind spots. And yet, as video shot this summer by a Ravenswood Manor resident at Wilson and Francisco and posted on DNAinfo shows, it’s very common for drivers to roll through stop signs.

    Streetsblog Chicago
Time and time again in local editorials, op-eds, and comment sections, there's the complaint that bicyclists don't come to a complete stop at stop signs. This is despite the fact that it's safe for someone on a relatively slow, lightweight device with near-360-degree visibility to treat a stop sign like a yield sign.

Excuse me Frank? You "used to be the one doing the shootings?" so the previous comment has no meaning? What kind of ludicrous comment is that? You WERE a gang member, and you saw the light? You were a vigilante and promoted justice in your own way? Hmm,, it sounds as if someone has a very vivid imagination, or has watched too many episodes of Law and Order, posting such nonsense anonymously here. For 30 years I chased those "animals" you refer to, would catch them, put them in jail, and the system would fail, in that they would be let go, "because County Jail is too overcrowded." How about a 31 day sentence for a gun arrest while the individual was out on bond for his first gun arrest three weeks earlier? Cameras in and of themselves are not the answer but they at least offer another alternative toward providing a welcome assist toward providing license plates, types of vehicles and offender descriptions in reviewing the videotapes when needed, and provide the neighborhood in general with a certain sense of peace. At this time of the year, in particular, it behooves us to work together-to work with the police, to work with our elected officials and to not cast a blind eye toward what is going on in and around our homes. The days of closing your curtains and saying, "Phew, I'm glad I don't live there," are over. Everyone has an opinion, everyone has their own perspective. It is our responsibility and right to express our views and no one should be criticized for staing what they think. Shame on you Frank....

I've asked for cameras in my own area and have gotten nowhere. I hope others on this thread are successful. There is something to be about paying taxes and then learning about budget cuts on the city, county, state and federal levels. With all these cuts, where are our taxes going? My own experience proves we need more police recruitment and resources and laws than what's being done.
