This area remains dangerous.. Alderman Hopkins install of a camera 3 months ago after the last shooting clearly is not the answer.. the alley between CVS and Blue Table is full of druggies 24/7... going to Treasure Island mid-day is scary. Some of the bars on Division St (Room 7, Detention, etc.) have no regard for the neighborhood allowing the patrons who have been drinking all night to stand out in front, being loud, arguing, etc. until way after closing.. check the police records for how many times response is needed for battery, etc. More police patrol, communication with the businesses and neighborhood input is needed NOW... I do hope the Alderman will lead this effort and step up to the plate.. before people stop going to these businesses and start moving out of the area.

  • I couldn't agree more with Tina R. It is a well known fact that the alley between CVS and Blue Table is filled with Drug Dealers. If the entire neighborhood is aware of this then why don't the police/alderman know? My worst fear is they do know and still choose to do nothing about it. Installing a camera is non-sensical considering all the police need to do is walk through the alley. Things are getting worse and will continue to until there is real police presence.

Three men shot and injured in the Near North neighborhood

It happened near Elm Street and Dearborn, just before 3 a.m.  Police say the men were walking along Elm, in front of the popular "Blue Door Kitchen and Garden" restaurant , when a gray SUV pulled up and someone got out and fired several shots.

  • One specific death-trap is the intersection of Elm & LaSalle. We have cars trying to turn left onto LaSalle with obstructed views plus a large number of pedestrians trying to use the crosswalk against oncoming traffic in both directions. The traffic light at Maple & LaSalle would be better-placed at Elm & LaSalle. I know that would just one block away from the next light at Division, but something needs to be done there before it becomes the next fatality headline.

  • NO, the traffic light at Maple/LaSalle is needed. The 150 Maple building is a 55+ building, with many older seniors who use walkers or motorized wheel chairs. That is why the posts on each corner at that intersection all have a button-press to give a "walk light" on the next...

NO, the traffic light at Maple/LaSalle is needed. The 150 Maple building is a 55+ building, with many older seniors who use walkers or motorized wheel chairs. That is why the posts on each corner at that intersection all have a button-press to give a "walk light" on the next light change (same as the intersection of Maple/Clark). Moody Bible Institute also has a senior building a block away at Oak (Jenkins Hall) and they too need that traffic light at Maple.

What is needed is an additional signal at Elm/LaSalle, which is, as you say, dangerous.

Taking away a much-needed traffic light is not appropriate.Unfortunately, the students from Walter Payton cut around from Wells and bypass the back of LaSalle Street Church and just walk across the intersection at Elm with pretty bad carelessness. I counted nearly 60 of them Wednesday, as I walked down the street (noses in their phones, of course). There is also a senior building at 1111 N Wells behind the LaSalle Street Church, and some of those residents walk around from the back of the church to cross at Elm. 170 W Oak is also a senior building.

LaSalle has many drivers who drive down the street near 40 mph and more. We don't need to make the situation worse; it needs to be made safer and an extra light would slow the speeders.

Personally, I don't understand why people don't walk an extra half-block to use the intersection at Division/LaSalle or Maple/LaSalle, with the walk signals. And, the traffic signal is needed at Maple/LaSalle, as the parking for 1100 LaSalle, 150 Maple and the townhouses on the cul-de-sac enter it from the main intersection and also leave from west of LaSalle.

Formal public hearings will be held at 42 W. Madison for:

  • Merger?! Many Classrooms are already at capacity. Most have between 30-40 students. These kids cannot learn in this type of setting. It's just not fair, and this is just setting them up
for failure. And how can the teachers even keep up. Frustrating

  • Val

Don't sheer demographics play a role in school mergers? The baby boom generation required lots of schools. Cohorts since have been smaller.

  • Val.

According to some school districts. I just don't understand how the decision makers chose not to put Childrens education/futures a priority
