  • Watching the live feeds, I am astonished at how many of the protestors smoke cigarettes and are bumming them from each other. What a nasty expensive habit and they're supporting big business/capitalism.

  • Albert F. Opitz moved to the 36th ward 10yrs ago w/o leaving my hs

First: I wonder if they are protesting fossil fuels, how did they arrive in Chicago? Bicycle? Walk?
Second: If they are protesting the war, why don't they go to Afganistan and protest to Al-Kaida?? Why is the U.S. always at fault?

Used Bikes Nearby?

Time for me to get another bicycle. I'm in the market for something used, preferably inexpensive. I'm looking for something to commute and pleasure ride around the area with, not go fast. I'm ready to put some work into myself too. Hybrid, road, mountain is fine.

Any places you folks recommend to check out. I keep an eye out on Craigslist.

  • Kenji, dunno if you got your bike. But in my humble opinion the COOLEST, HIPPEST used bike shop is Working Bikes Cooperative, a non-profit on S. Western. We just got a bike for Claire there. Here is the website: workingbikes.org. It's worth a trip just to chat with these folks.

I've been pedaling down to Bob's recently to chat him up. You never know what he'll have but he's doing a thorough job on the ones he puts up for sale in that garage.

Speed Limit Cameras on Foster

How can we volunteer to have Foster Avenue, between Elston and Kimball, set as the first area to test the speed-limit cameras?

This section of Foster is clearly posted as a 30 MPH zone, yet because of the large area of parks and little parking there is a very large amount of speeding down this street. It's a real threat to pedestrians, senior citizens, children, bicyclists, and other using the public streets.

This would be a good place to test the system. Speed limit signs are clearly posted along the route and new signs wouldn't even be needed.

Miranda rights relate to criminal law.

Our efforts to preserve the Portage Theater

Recently, I filed an ordinance authorizing the City to exercise its powers of eminent domain to buy the building. This is not a step that I take lightly. I have consulted with the Mayor’s administration, and we remain hopeful that we can preserve this critical economic engine without implementing this solution.

It is not my intent that the City enter into the theater business, nor is it my desire that the theater be turned over to a non-profit. Both options would remove this substantial property from the tax rolls, severely impacting the Portage Park Tax Increment Financing District and the Six Corners Special Service Area. Instead, if necessary, the City would buy the building and sell it to a private business ready to preserve and enhance the current use of the theater. State law allows for this type of purchase and resale within TIF districts.

I wouldn’t contemplate taking this extraordinary step if the historic Portage Theater weren’t critical to the redevelopment of Six Corners. Several restaurants and potential cultural attractions are waiting for the resolution of this issue before they come to our community. The church’s proposed use for the Portage would make it impossible for anyone to get a liquor license within 100 feet of the building. It would make it impossible for anyone to get a public place of amusement license within 250 feet without the church’s permission. Because the Portage Theater building is so large, these zones would extend to the south side of Irving Park Road, in addition to Milwaukee Avenue near the theater.
The proposed use would gouge a huge hole in Six Corners where there would be no new restaurants, and where any proposed theater or entertainment venue would require the church’s permission. It would stifle development at a time when Six Corners is ready to take off.

I continue to remain ready to help Chicago Tabernacle with alternative sites.

Ok ok....Uptown theater is different. Its nice to read flattering comments about Uptown for a change.

My comparison was a very limited one for sure. However it seems what to do about a historic theater in the heart of a neighborhood is a recurring theme.

Each scenario is different so you have to find your own way. Another example would be the Remova in Bridgeport, very different but still. Like the Portage its fate remains to be determined.

The Renova, Uptown, and Portage have a chance because people are focused and care about what happens. When the opposite is true we get outcomes like the once great Nortown off Devon, now an empty lot.

Or like the Granada, torn down and sold for scrap. A structure with the same name was built on that site and has the soul of a suburban or Soviet office building.

So I am optimistic about the Portage, its in good condition, the Alderman and the community are engaged so it looks good.

One last non-6 corners fact...The Uptown is on the upswing too with $63M slated for the renovation. Gotta like that!

When I was at the Chicago Cultural Plan 2012 meeting at Copernicus Ctr in March the Portage came up more then once, obviously it is important to your community. They passed out some buttons and I still have mine.....

    Save the Portage!

Another letter writing campaign

I saw the below in the Tribune today about Three Floyd's wanting a brewpub in Chicago. If they don't have a definite location yet, sounds like a nice anchor for 6 Corners or vacant lot on Lawrence by Jeff Park CTA/Metra.

From story linked below:
The most revelatory news is that owner Nick Floyd is scouting locations to open a Three Floyds brewpub in Chicago. He has been looking at spaces during the last couple of weeks, and though coy about the where ("anywhere but the Loop") and when ("the near future"), he sounded resolute about it happening.

http://www.chicagotribune.com/features/food/stew/chi-three-floyds-three-floyds-brewing-looking-to-open-a-chicago-brewpub-20120425,0,7354010.story

  • Jonny Mess Portage

I'm not sure letterbombing the good people at Three Floyds is the best idea. I'd say posting on their facebook wall, and talking to the alderpeople about recruitment might be a better tack. Regardless, let's get 'em here. Like Conor, I used to go to Indian for their beers, so going down the street would be pretty great.

  • Rock-Ola aka Spencer Field

Not sure a few emails qualifies as letter-bombing, Jonny! Don't see any harm in emailing them.

I gather that community response isn't the primary factor in Three Floyds decision-making anyway. People will fill the place almost anywhere they decide to open.

About 2 hours later, a friend's son was walking the dog and this car pulled up, the driver motioned him to come to the car. The passenger GOT OUT OF THE CAR, started walking toward him and started asking him for directions. My son said nothing to him and immediately ran away from him and ran home. A police report was made.

About 2 months ago, the same described car was in this area and approached another girl. In that incident, there was a man and woman in the car. Male with same long haired description. A police report was made.
