Gun shots on (off) Kenmore Ave

Anybody else hear multiple gun shots on or off Kenmore and Lawrence? Is this how the summer begins?

Boom! This morning

Anyone else hear the very loud noise this morning at around 7am? It sounded like it was coming from near Argyle and Sheridan.

Loud Bang

Did anyone hear a loud bang this morning? I took my dog out at about 6:45 and just before coming in (a few minutes later) there was a loud bang. This was in the alley between Argyle and Margate. I would have dismissed it as a dumpster being dropped but when I came in, my wife thought I came back for my umbrella because she heard it and saw a flash in the window. I imagine we were not the only two who heard it as she heard it inside while showering with the bathroom window closed. I called 911 but they had not received any other calls.

Dog-Friendly Apartment Needed for June 1st

Neighbours,

I'm a responsible, reliable, professional tenant looking to move into a dog-friendly studio or 1 bedroom on June 1st. I currently live in a 2 bedroom in Ravenswood and I love the area, but I would also consider moving to Edgewater, Buena Park, Uptown or Andersonville. My dog is an older, large, potty-trained and well behaved mutt (not a pit mix).

I prefer to be contacted directly by owners or building managers and not brokers. I would also consider a sublet situation if there was a possibility to renew the lease.

Please get in touch!

Local Businesses

Hello Neighbors. I'm wondering what your favorite "hole-in-the-wall" local businesses are. I'd love to hear about all types of businesses. My favorite by far is Chinese Lantern on Argyle. It's take-out or delivery only. I lived in NYC for several years and this is the BEST Chinese food I've found in Chicago that is cooked in a similar style. That lunch specials are around $5-

The ducks and chickens hang in the window and their Seafood soup and Pekin duck is to die for. It is not a hole in the wall. It was but it expanded. Huge Asian crowd eating there and they have a liquor license. It is a family business. For special occasions get a whole roast pig.

cleaning person

hi there can anyone recommend a reliable cleaning person for a two bedroom/1 bath in edgewater? i'd rather it be the same individual every time rather than through a service. i have cats so pet friendly would be a plus. also, any idea on the cost would be super helpful. many thanks!

  • I highly recommend The Green Maid. They use non-toxic pet-friendly products, the prices are very reasonable, and they are licensed, bonded and insured. They send a team of three and except for a couple occasions when they got lost or were running late, I've been very happy for the year + that I've been using them.

Blood curdling scream.

At 6am this morning, my roommate and I were awoken by a female's scream that could not have been faked. I sleep like the dead, and it woke me up. It happened in the alley between Argyle and Margate Terrace just west of Marine Drive. It has been on my mind all day. I was just wondering if anyone had any input.

Loading loading

  • pugmama artist/realtor with an opinion

    Yes, I have input:

    CALL THE DAMN POLICE!

    911. Please. What if that were you out there screaming for help, and your neighbors just wondered "golly, I wonder why that poor person sounds so troubled?".

    CALL. THE. POLICE.

  • Seriously, I can't believe anyone would hear a woman scream and NOT call 911.

FYI. I don't have much info but, this morning around 6:05 I was walking the dog when I heard two blood curdling screams. Another walker and myself began walking up Margate to investigate. We saw a women rushing down the street saying an black man just pulled a pocket knife on her and tried to get her purse. She struggled and managed to get away. He ran toward Ainslie. He was wearing a blue jacket. She did call 911

Advance notice of these meetings would be greatly appreciated, especially by stakeholders who are directly impacted. Day of notices are not sufficient for most to make changes of plans, babysitting arrangements, etc. Given the fact that problems with planning activities have happened in the past, one would hope that the sponsoring groups would be above board in gathering an appropriate audience.

No notices have been posted in my highrise, none of my neighbors have been made aware.

I find this to be a sad excuse for public awareness or advertisement of an open meeting. The day of? Please. Have some respect.

  • I'm sorry for the misunderstanding. I posted the last-minute reminder for tonight's first collaborative meeting in the event that other neighbors had either forgotten about it or were unaware but able to make it last minute.

I'd recommend getting in touch with one or all of the organizations involved so that you and your neighbors can be included in the regular communications. It was a very positive and constructive meeting!

The next meeting is April 18, 6:30-8:30PM at Jackson Park Fieldhouse, 6401 S. Stony Island Ave.

  • Hi again any mos a,

Noticed that Active Transportation Alliance is taking additional feedback via their website post about the meetings:

Best Place for a Reasonably Priced Bike Tune Up?

Although I live l block away from a bike shop at Bryn Mawr and Kenmore -- its tuneups cost $90 while my bike only cost $120. I'm just looking for a basic tuneup for a Sportmart type bike that costs around $25 - $40. Suggestions would be appreciated!

Loading loading

  • Lake Shore Bike and Tune they are located right on the Lakefront Path just South of Irving Park (right next to the second tennis courts) They have been my go-to bicycle shop for yers now. They are a little kiosk/small storefront so you might have to call ahead if the weather is on the bad. They have great customer service and prices. http://www.lakeshorebike.com/home.php

  • A pro tune-up is totally worth it. Otherwise, you can wear on your BB, chain, chainring, and cassette unevenly, and completely wear those parts out. It cost me around $350 to replace all 4 about 2 years ago; it's well worth it to invest the extra money in a pro tuneup, and/or learn to do some of it yourself.

Landlord and life-long north side Chicago Resident

Is there such a thing as a comfortable hide-a-bed sofa?

We've downsized from a 5 bedroom SFH to a two bedroom apartment. I need the second bedroom to serve two functions, home office/den and guest bedroom. I'm hoping that sofa hide-a-beds have evolved and that there may be a certain kind or brand that stands out as really good. Anybody have experience (as either an owner or as a guest) enough to make a recommendation or to note things I should consider or be aware or before I make a purchase? Thank you for any insights you can offer!

You might also want to consider a wall bed. Mom has one which looks like a nice wall cabinet/bookcase and it's much easier to maneuver than a sofa sleeper.

  • SBloom architect, toddler wrangler, 23 years north side

A Murphy Bed (wall bed) is the best solution. You get to use an actual mattress mounted to a panel. The whole assembly tilts up vertically and disappears. I have designed several for clients. And have slept on a few of them as well.

From New Bike Racks - where did they come from?:

"Just curious about the new bike racks you see through Lakeview. They are cool colors and in the shape of a bike. I like them and just wondering if they were purchased by the city or some how locally. Any comments would be helpful?"
