1968 Lawndale

I'm working on a class project about the 1968 riots in North Lawndale. Using archives and interviews I hope to present this period to the wider audience and contrast it with the better known '68 National Democratic Convention.
Does anyone know of North Lawndale's residents who had lived through that time and perhaps participated or witnessed the events?

First of all, I really hope this project will help North Lawndale to become a better and safer neighborhood and that it will improve the coverage of the neighborhood in the mainstream media as well as expose its rich history to wider audiences.

The project is part of my documentary film production class at DePaul University. I'm a graduate journalism student there.

The goal of the project is to look at the history of the 1968 riots in North Lawndale, what started them, how they impacted the community, and where the community is now, nearly half a decade later, but in no way is it meant to exploit the community.

The project came out of my own initiative. A few weeks ago I drove
through North Lawndale and I was captivated by the stunning
architecture there. Since then I've been reading about Lawndale's
history and I visited the neighborhood and talked to some of the
    residents on several occasions.

During one of my conversations with Mr. Charles Leeks from the
Neighborhood Housing Services in North Lawndale, I learned about the '1968' that happened in Chicago, but wasn't part of the Democratic National Convention. Mr Leeks didn't live in Lawndale at the time, but told me the riots after Martin Luther King Jr death were never discussed in depth in the Chicago's mainstream media. Instead the DNC riots stole the historical spotlight in a way.

This video project, which I hope will be one of many to come from me about North Lawndale, is meant to show that episode in the history of one of the culturally richest neighborhoods in Chicago. I intend to look beyond the stereotypical coverage of certain areas of the city as crime ridden and hopeless and allow the residents themselves to express how they had been affected by 1968 and where they are now with their lives in relation to that time.
If you wish, you can also contact my professor, Joanne Zielinski at 312-362-5132 or zielinski@cim.depaul.edu.

Spreading the word

Hi,
Just want to let pple kno that there are a few hispanic males who are knocking on doors and asking for some else or saying that some one sent them to check out pipes. They try to distract the person in the house or have them show them somthing outside. While the other enters the house and robs them. This happened to my parents who are old in the little village neighborhood. Its sad when your own race is doing this to their own pple. Well jus warning you all out there if you alone or parents live alone. Pass out the word.

Thanks for being willing to try digital tools. That is why they say in some neighborhoods the DIGITAL DIVIDE is still expanding.

Spread the word to use the INTERNET, email, EB, Crimewatch, Dkstrict Homepage...anything that will get you out of the CAPS loop and the Alderman loop.

Nobody can stay on top of it better than vigilant residents asking that union workers just plain do a good job in our neighborhood.

We also discussed the Cook County redistricting process. We provided background on how the Census is used to determine representation in Congress; develop political boundaries at the state and local levels and allocate funds for entitlement programs. We expressed our desire that the 2nd District be preserved as a West Side district, and include the boundaries for the 24th Ward and 9th Legislative District.
