Here is a new opportunity to make your community stronger and better connected to resources that can make a difference. Be part of the Mentoring-Plus-Jobs component of the Governor’s Neighborhood Recovery Initiative, a comprehensive effort to reduce youth violence and increase adult engagement and leadership here in the South Shore Area.

Nearly 2,000 Chicago-area youth and young adults age 16 to 21, will soon be doing street-level peer-to-peer outreach as members of Community Action Teams (CATs). CATs members will pass out information in a variety of public setting promoting healthy behaviors and directing local youth and parents to supportive resources and services throughout the city.

We now have several new opening for part-time CATs member, who will work 10 hours a week – Wednesday, Thursday and Friday evening and during the day on Saturdays.

Community and Friends of Bret Harte Elementary School,

We are delighted to announce that our students have the opportunity to participate in the Illinois State Competition of Future Problem Solving! Future Problem Solving is an academic program rooted in critical and analytical thinking, research skills and real-life problem solving. Students explore topics of interests, creatively demonstrate understanding, and use written and verbal communication to express their original ideas in a team format.

This is the first year that our students have participated in this event. Their outstanding performance at the city competition qualified both teams of four students to advance to the state competition that will be held in Normal, Illinois on the campus of Illinois State University, April 27th-28th, 2012.

We are seeking support to help offset the financial burden our students face as they prepare to compete and win in the state competition. Our students have worked extremely hard to get ready for this event. They have committed an entire school year to training and hosted several fundraising events to reach their financial goal, but they have fallen short and the deadline is fast approaching. Our students are in need of $2000.00 to cover the cost of transportation, lodging and registration.

We greatly appreciate any type of financial support that can be offered to the students of Bret Harte Elementary School as they travel to Illinois State University to compete and win in Future Problem Solving.

If you are a non-judgmental adult, live in South Shore you could have an opportunity to work with and mentor young people, 16-21 years old, as Adult Mentors in the 2nd year of South Shore’s Mentoring + Jobs component of Governor Quinn’s Neighborhood Recovery Initiative. M+J is part of a comprehensive effort to reduce youth violence and foster leadership and engagement in youth and adults.

The South Shore M+J can hire 16 adult mentors and 80 youth for the project from May through September 2012. Youth will do street-level peer-to-peer outreach as members of Community Action Teams (CATs). These youth will need adult coordinators and mentors from their community to help them with their social, emotional and professional development. We want to increase positive coping behaviors among these youth and surround them with protective factors that include a strong safety net of community adults.

We have openings for part-time Adult CATs Coordinators/Mentors. These paid positions could be a way for you to mentor young people and contribute to a unique effort dedicated o making our community stronger and better connected to resources.

On Wednesday, March 28, 2012, the Illinois House Public Safety Appropriations committee hearing will be held regarding Governor Quinn’s Neighborhood Recovery Initiative (NRI) FY13 Budget.

Neighborhood Recovery Initiative is facing a 9% cut in funding for FY 2013. This could negatively impact the South Shore community programs, as Black United Fund of Illinois is a lead agency, with participation from organizations including South Shore Chamber, Inc., and ABJ Community Services. Youth, mentors, and parents were hired and trained last summer and greatly contributed to anti-violence initiatives through scores of funded and volunteer activities.

If you have the time, you may attend the March 28 hearing. If not, you may call or send a fax IMMEDIATELY to your representative to encourage them to oppose proposed budget cuts. It only takes 5 minutes to support NRI's significant support in our "village," and throughout the state. Illinois African American Coalition for Prevention has provided the details below.
