Feral/Alley Cat Colony

Over the last few years our feral/alley cat population in the 3700 Block of Albany has gone sky high. It all started with a few houses that kept their non-spayed/neutered cats outside. I know of at least 20 cats that room the block.

Over the last few years our feral/alley cat population in the 3700 Block of Albany has gone sky high. It all started with a few houses that kept their non-spayed/neutered cats outside. I know of at least 20 cats that room the block.

The biggest issue is that they come into our yards and gardens and defecate everywhere and then we have to clean it up. I have an indoor cat, but outdoor cat feces can be harmful if touched.

And my neighbor can't get them out of his garage. He is now on his third momma kitty with a litter that has crawled through the side and camped out far under a utility bench. He feels bad of course and doesn't want to harm them so he just lives with is, but again cat poop everywhere.

It is hard to know if these are someone's pets or not. I heard that PAWS has a trap/spray and release program but what if these are really pets? I guess if they are and the owner let's them roam then it's fair game? I have noticed more alley cats on blocks on Troy and Whipple too. Anybody else having this issue?

  • Well if they can trap mom and kittens, they will try to adopt-foster the kittens. Feral Fixers has trapped 7000 cats & they are pretty good at sharing advice or information about the process. I would start with e-mailing them with the problem and asking advice. They also have a FB page and are pretty quick to return messages. Good luck!

  • I host a feral cat colony in my backyard (4 cats) through the Treehouse Humane Society's "Cats at Work" program. They are spayed/neutered and vaccinated, also microchipped. They are feral, and will not come near people. I have small shelters in my yard for them, and I feed and water...

I host a feral cat colony in my backyard (4 cats) through the Treehouse Humane Society's "Cats at Work" program. They are spayed/neutered and vaccinated, also microchipped. They are feral, and will not come near people. I have small shelters in my yard for them, and I feed and water them every day.

The Cats at Work Program is a very successful, natural rat abatement program. I had a worsening rat problem, every day rats ran through my yard. Now with the cats -- no rats. It is such a blessing.

Treehouse Humane Society also has a TNR Program (trap, neuter and return). If you contact them, they can help with the excessive feral cat population in your neighborhood. I tell you, though, I would rather have cats hanging around than rats, any day.

What's going on across from Burger King?

  • Anything gang related is so unpredictable. I work at NMH in the ER and it's just ridiculous to see how much gang activity goes on in neighborhoods we consider "safe".

  • Park View Lutheran School reviewed by a parent

I give high marks for Park View. My daughter was previously at a Catholic School and it was much larger. She was bullied relentlessly. The teachers and principal were a part of the bulling. They convinced me that she could not long. In addition, my mom went to the school for me and all the white students stared as if she had two hears. One girl from the region around India started screaming and crying while pointing to her. It was if no one in that school had ever seen a black person up close and they all only wanted us to go. We left and went to Park View and the atmosphere was fun, accepting, and friendly. The grades began to improve and in time she started getting A's. Go there, they are nice, warm people.

Rusty and Sediment Water

Over the past several years I have noticed that our water is rusty. If we don't use a toilet in our house for several days, it leaves rust marks and/or blackish sediment. I also noticed this at our office over in North Center. Over the weekends, it gets black sediment. Anyone else have this issue? At our house we replaced the water pipe from the street 14 years ago, so I would say that this is a city problem.

  • I think it was this past summer because a friend of mine moved here from Texas and I told him not to go into the water.
