Someone burned a cross in front of a home on the 4400-block of North Monitor. This grotesque and cowardly display of hatred and bigotry is unacceptable and deserving of strong condemnation.

CHICAGO - Thirty-six food vendors took part in the first Taste of Chicago on July 4, 1980. Thirty-six years later, only one of them is still in business and still a participant at the annual festival. And after all those years, it's probably the most recognizable one: Eli's Cheesecake.

Washing machine repair?

Fairly modern machine on the fritz!
Any recommendations?

  • Oh I actually have a great guy. Try Jim at (773) 419-8678. He's serviced both our washer and dryer as well as a unit at an old residence, and they've all been working great ever since.

I have one suggestion for future consideration! I'm a big fan of HWA Home Warranty of America. I have all my clients get them for their new homes, and have my sellers offer buyers home warranties (sellers are covered for free during the listing period) I renew my own home warranty yearly. There are 3 levels based on your needs, basically all your appliances are covered, furnace, hot water heater, and many other things like garage door opener, door bells, plumbing, electric, roof leaks, etc etc. You can somewhat customize your warranties. The beauty is that if an appliance breaks, you call the company and they send a vendor out quickly, usually within 24-48 hours. You don't need to worry about finding a reputable vendor! Then, based on your warranty level, you simply pay $75-$100 to fix or replace the appliance, or pay for the service you need. The middle plan is $500 for the year (less $20 for a condo) and the first year is 13 months. I have saved a few thousand dollars replacing my fridge, washing machine motor, garage door opener, etc! I highly recommend AND, if anyone is interested, I am happy to order for you and pass on my realtor $70 discount for the first year. Just private message me or find my info at www.jenniferbaron.com / Go to www.hwahomewarranty.com to check out the company!

Two more loud bangs

I'm in Old Irving near the blue line and heard two more loud bangs. Woke up my family. Called it in. Can someone get an address on these people?

  • Ashley* Irving Park Resident

I live near the Irving stop also. My neighbor actually sets off bottle rockets and such ALL THE TIME. Scares the life out of my dogs every time.

  • Ashley
Your neighbor sounds like a nightmare. Have you tried asking him to caught the c!@! out? I believe setting off bottle rockets is illegal because of the potential danger.

Fire near N. Central Park and Irving Park Roads

Was at US Bank on Irving and smelled, then saw a fire near the N.W corner of Central Park and Irving Park Road. It was at the back of one of the buildings in the alley. Smelled like wood and a car burning. Called 911, 20 rings later they picked up and transferred me to the Fire department. That phone rang more than 20 times and I already heard fire trucks on the way, so I hung up. Anyone know what's on fire over there?

  • Judy Weisenski

and if they do call it in, the 17th lost a bunch of officers to 'hot' zones, so there is nobody to respond. how about we hire some officers already? in case nobody's noticed, the great recession is over?!?!?
