I wanted to find out if these 'residential pick-up truck parking' signs that I see popping up all over the neighborhood are legit. So far I have only seen them on beat up old pick up trucks and one of them seems to have made the front of my home their place of choice to park. Don't get me wrong, people are allowed to park where they want on the street but there are reasons pick-up truck are considered "B" rated trucks and should only be parked on commercial streets. First, Can Mel's office verify that these signs are being passed out legitimately, since his name is on the sign? Second, why is the city not enforcing "B" plates on pick-up trucks? I need assistance in getting rid of the beater truck that has made the front of my home parking spot of choice.

Just to clarify, those unsightly, er, I mean, second division vehicles with B-Truck plates in the state of Illinois can include more than just pickups. It also can mean SUV’s or vans too. That would include Tahoes ... But I suppose we can make an exception for Tahoes ... so long as they're sporting CPD stripes. But those Range Rovers and Land Rovers, especially the ones with rhino bars, are unsightly nuisances and must be banished. Make it so.

so, these school buses that are frequently parked on Kimball are not supposed to be parked there I suppose?

Speed Limit Cameras on Foster

How can we volunteer to have Foster Avenue, between Elston and Kimball, set as the first area to test the speed-limit cameras?

This section of Foster is clearly posted as a 30 MPH zone, yet because of the large area of parks and little parking there is a very large amount of speeding down this street. It's a real threat to pedestrians, senior citizens, children, bicyclists, and other using the public streets.

This would be a good place to test the system. Speed limit signs are clearly posted along the route and new signs wouldn't even be needed.

Tim, I'm at Irving and Bernard..35th ward... I e-mailed the city a 4th time with a video and surprise, no reasponse. Now that's it's spring/summer again, I need to get this addressed.

  • Moose,

Do you have a "keycut" (3 inch channel) down the center of the alley to help it drain better? If not, try contacting your Alderman to submit a request to CDOT for an alley keycut. If you do have a keycut already, oftentimes the keycuts get blocked up with dirt and debris and they require a good sweeping/cleaning.

    Hope this helps....

He is super sweet and will let you pet him; I've been calling him Boots, because of his little white paws. I'm sure Suzanne doesn"t care who catches him. : ) I will keep looking too.

Swimming lesson recommendations?

We want to sign our four-year-old daughter up for swimming lessons in the area. Does anyone have any recommendations for good programs?

All the above seem great. I take my kids to the Dolphin Swim Club in Skokie. It is right off of Dempster and 4 kids to a teacher. My 3 year old and 8 year old take lessons. They teach life saving skills in the water as well. I highly recommend them.

  • YMCA! My girls learned at the Lakeview Y (3333 N. Marshfield, around the corner from Whole Foods) We always bought sprinkle cookies at Dinkel's after class. Parking can be tricky there.
High Ridge Y (just north of Touhy on Western) has its own parking lot.

My neighbor told me that originally the rehabber said that he was fixing the house up himself (a lie obviously) - it sounds like this guy won't be your neighbor. The house will probably be up for sale in a few months and hopefully he won't actually be your neighbor. Just a word of warning - the guys that redid my house pulled NO permits. Making sure they do could save a TON of hassle and $$ for future owners. If the guys name is Sean let me know - I would love to call him out on all of the problems he's caused us.

Please attend if you have any issues that need be be brought to the alderman's attention or are interested in finding out what is going on in the 33rd Ward.

If you are unable to attend please add your issue in a comment below and I'll be sure to address it at the meeting. I'm also including a list of the outstanding items from the last meeting that are waiting on followup from the alderman:

- Policing levels in the 17th district. Does the Alderman think police levels are sufficient? How with the NATO summit effect the police presence in the 33rd ward?

- Street condition on the 4200 Block N Francisco. Sewer is supposedly fixed which caused the pavement to buckle according to a resident who talked to the work crew. Is there any word on when the failed street surface will be addressed?

- Playground flooding at Bateman Elementary School. Playground floods after any rain rendering it unusable. Mandatory recess for the 2012-13 school year necessitates proper drainage. A resident and architect have attempted to get a meeting with the alderman for 2.5 months to no avail. Alderman did call to discuss the matter with no notice resulting in the architect not being able to participate in the discussion. Has the alderman followed up with the architect?

Hi Jon! I'd like to address the issue of standing water on the 3300 block of sunnyside whenever we get a heavy rain. The water pool on the sides of the street and does not drain for days. It's not only a mosquito breeding ground, and really smells after a while.

Pot holes in the alley between Kimball and Christinia. They have become craters and are becoming unsafe to drive over.

    Thanks!

Jon, can you please inform the Alderman that Alderman Laurino is having a public meeting about the Albany Park Library on Thursday, May 24 at the Library? The Library Commissioner and an official from the Public Building Commission will be there, and it would be great if someone from the 33rd Ward Office could attend, since the closure impacts all of us.

Dear 33rd Ward Resident,

The NATO Host Committee has now corrected itself and says that the Horner Park protest is indeed scheduled for this Saturday morning and not today.

The following is an excerpt from the Facebook page of organizers detailing the activities of the Saturday protest:

On May 19, NATO demonstrators will gather at the Irving Park Brown Line stop, where they will be given hospital gowns with "Healthcare Not Warfare," and, "Clinics Not NATO," written on them. They intend to go door to door in the nearby neighborhood.

At 12pm, the demonstrators will converge on Horner Park at Irving and California, and will then march on Rahm Emanuel's house at 4228 N Hermitage.

Please avoid driving in the area until after 2:00 p.m. this Saturday if at all possible.

Sincerely yours,

Alderman Richard F. Mell

Time for me to get another bicycle. I'm in the market for something used, preferably inexpensive. I'm looking for something to commute and pleasure ride around the area with, not go fast. I'm ready to put some work into myself too. Hybrid, road, mountain is fine.

Any places you folks recommend to check out. I keep an eye out on Craigslist.

About 2 hours later, a friend's son was walking the dog and this car pulled up, the driver motioned him to come to the car. The passenger GOT OUT OF THE CAR, started walking toward him and started asking him for directions. My son said nothing to him and immediately ran away from him and ran home. A police report was made.

About 2 months ago, the same described car was in this area and approached another girl. In that incident, there was a man and woman in the car. Male with same long haired description. A police report was made.

What You Can Do

. Be aware of this situation and alert neighbors in the area about the crime.

. If possible, don't walk alone and stay in well lit areas.

. Call 911 to report any suspicious person(s), vehicle(s) or activity in your neighborhood.

. Call 911 and provide a detailed description of the offender(s) including the vehicle description and license plate information.

Talk with your children. We need to keep alert and our eyes open. If anyone sees this car, PLEASE GET LICENSE PLATE AND CALL 911.

Asrar Hookah Public Nuisance Meeting, May 15

A public nuisance meeting regarding Asrar Hookah will be held at City Hall (121 N LaSalle) on May 15 at 10:00am, room 805. Asrah Hookah, formally know as Fire Rock Hookah, has been discussed for many months at the 33rd Ward Advisory Meeting. Apparently if you live nearby (I don't) you know why this meeting is being held. People have reported fights, underage drinking, and loud noise late into the night centered around this establishment. If you would like to voice your opinion on Asrar Hookah to Chicago's Department of Business Affairs and Consumer Protection please attend on May 15th.

Please pass this information along to your neighbors who may not be on EveryBlock.

Why is this on the radar now? I posted this nearly one year ago. The partial section of "green alley" that was installed 2-3 years ago is already being redone because it failed it to work properly in the first place. How shocking!! Then the city wants to tear out 3 more blocks of asphalt, displace parking and scavenger services for weeks or more likely months on end and they'd likely just throw the old material in to a landfill and have another failed project on the books. How "green!" I think this "extra money" the alderman had fall in to his lap would be way better spent on hiring additional police, which we desparately need, rather than in the pocket of his contractor cronies.

  • Greg Just a long time North Center resident!

Caerann I couldn't have said it better! With the city's financial disaster the last thing we should be doing is tearing up alleys for "green" initiatives (with public money).

The next Open House will be Monday, May 21st from 9:30- 10:30 a.m. My son currently attends Park View Lutheran School, and we absolutely love it. It's a hidden gem, with a supportive, close-knit staff and student body and tremendous opportunity for individual attention and learning, due to the size and attentive staff. My little guy is never "lost in the crowd" here; his PreK class has only 10 children, with a great teacher (formerly at Nettlehorst) and FT assistant. The campus features a library, a large gym, art, music and computer rooms (even for the youngest children starting at age 3) as well as a playground. Yoga is taught twice a week to all of the kids as well, and Ms. Swan the music teacher is fun-loving and really talented. The kids love her.

Tuition is very reasonable. PT and FT hours are available for preschool-ages (3 & 4) and aftercare up until 6:30 pm is included in the preschool rate. As a parent who did extensive preschool research, Park View is one of the most affordable options.

I wanted to post about Park View because the school would like to grow attendance, and our experience there has been so great. It's tough to find a great preschool option, and Park View has really met our needs- and then some. I'm happy to share more about our experiences there, if interested.

It's located at 3919 N Monticello, and an Open House is scheduled for Monday 5/21 from 9:30-10:30. Should that time not work, please feel free to contact Heather Thornton at 773-478-7203 and discuss a convenient date and time.

Here's a link as well: http://www.parkviewlutheran.org/

Thanks & hope to see you there!

How does that work?
