Remember?

I spotted this message on the sidewalk, and I'm curious if anyone knows the backstory. It was on South Harper, just south of 55th. The note reads: "This block should have 20+ starlings, 4 pair cardinals, 3+ robins. Remember?"

It's that last word/line that kind of stuck with me, as though the writer was referencing some past deal or agreement. Is it just a message, remembering a time when there were more birds in the neighborhood?

    TAKE ACTION ›
    Dear Friend,
Every year, millions of birds die grisly and unnecessary deaths because of oil pits, power lines, communications towers, and other deadly hazards. The very real toll these threats take on birds—electrocutions, poisonings, broken necks—in many cases can be easily avoided.

In response, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service just launched a plan to strengthen the Migratory Bird Treaty Act, one of America's most important bird conservation laws, to help meet the challenges of the 21st century and finally put a stop to these preventable bird death traps.

Let the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service know you support this critical action.

Birds must negotiate a growing tangle of human-caused threats. These include uncovered oil pits and other toxic pools that waterfowl mistake for fresh water, an ever-expanding network of power lines and communication towers, and towering offshore oil rigs as tall as 25 story buildings. Many companies are already working with conservationists to find solutions that keep birds safe. Solutions are often inexpensive and easily implemented, like ensuring waste pits are properly covered.

It’s time to take those good ideas to scale and make sure everyone is playing by the same rules. There’s no excuse for needlessly killing birds. The new rules proposed by U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service will help to proactively prevent these unnecessary bird deaths.
Send an email to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service today to urge them to stand strong behind their plan to strengthen the Migratory Bird Treaty Act.

"Hello, dog lovers! We are a group of University of Chicago students currently researching the communities surrounding and created by dog parks! We are seeking volunteers who would like to be interviewed by us about their experiences in dog parks like Jackson Bark and their opinions on the general importance of dog parks. Our goal is to better understand the relationships between dog parks and their surrounding neighborhoods, as well as how people conceive of their relationships with their own dogs and fellow dog owners and whether or not this promotes a sense of community. If you would be wiling to give us a half hour of your time to tell us about your dog, your parks, and your neighbors (we can conduct the interview in Jackson Bark while your puppy plays!), please feel free to contact me at kellypeyton@uchicago.edu ."
