Very Aggressive Bicyclists on Sidewalk

I'm having some problems with very aggressive teens and adult men riding bicycles on Hyde Park sidewalks and basically terroriIng the pedestrian.

I'm having some problems with very aggressive teens and adult men riding bicycles on Hyde Park sidewalks and basically terroriIng the pedestrian.

Last evening I was walking West on 54th street near Blackstone when a ~ 11 year old came up on the sidewalk from behind and announced "on the Left" as he sped by. I called out to him "please ride ride in the street, not on the sidewalk".

His father was riding his bike in the street and he proceeded to shout abusinve curse words and threats saying his son could ride wherever he wanted.

It seems this is becoming a popular form of harassment, bicyclists speeding around on HP sidewalks, forcing pedestrians to jump out of the way.

I believe the law in Chicago is that until the age of 12, you are allowed to ride on the sidewalk. Also, saying, "On the left" is actually a courtesy to the pedestrian to let you know they are approaching you. When I'm on the bike trail, I appreciate when bikers yell this out to let me know they are about to pass me.
Adults should not be riding on the sidewalk, however.

  • Yes, the law in Chicago is that persons 12 or under may ride on the sidewalk. So if the child was 11 or even 12, then he wasn't breaking any laws and was being courteous to let you know that he was passing you. Few things are more unsettling than...

Yes, the law in Chicago is that persons 12 or under may ride on the sidewalk. So if the child was 11 or even 12, then he wasn't breaking any laws and was being courteous to let you know that he was passing you. Few things are more unsettling than a bike suddenly whizzing by from behind. Not sure what the father was hoping to accomplish by cursing and threatening, especially in front of a young child.

I will say that I have noticed an uptick in the number of teen males on (comically tiny) bicycles on the sidewalks on 53rd, particularly around the Harper Court area. Maybe it's because school is out, but there are usually several young men loitering or riding around the Chipotle / Starbucks area of Harper Court, and they are usually blocking up an already congested area of sidewalk. I would agree with the sentiment that they are a bit aggressive, or at least hostile to pedestrians who ask them to move.

Update: Jackson Park Dog Park

Added to the agility training course:
construction horse
suspended tire
cones

Many thanks to the anonymous benefactor of the bucket of fetching balls. I moved it all to the car, as balls go missing, i'll distribute them among the three Wooflawn dog parks. https://www.facebook.com/wooflawn Speaking of which, if anyone has any old toys your pup has lost interest in, please consider donating them to the dog park to give them a second life.

Driving Directions: LSD to Science Drive, go south on Columbia Drive beyond MSI's southern parking lot where you'll find the bridge to the tennis courts. Parking by the courts is free. The 'dog park' is located in the NE court enclosure. See bird's eye view => http://chicago.everyblock.com/pets/apr17-jackson-park-dog-park-6094931/photos/

FYI: There is an on going outdoor social/party all summer long... saturday and sunday late-evenings/night all parking is jam packed, people everywhere. I found this out the hard way this past sunday; on my way in i was struggling to find a place to park and on my way out it was bumper to bumper. No one was partying near or in the courts when i was there but i've seen evidence of such after weekends past.

    update 5

Found an abandoned hula hoop on the way to the park, incorporated it into the center of the agility course. There are two other locations that i think such a setup would work well. Any hula hoops in need of a home please drop off at the park and i'll put them to good use. https://flic.kr/p/oxiS17
