A Harlem Renaissance world clashes with an ‘Alabama Sky’

Where: Court Theatre, 5535 S. Ellis

A Harlem Renaissance world clashes with an 'Alabama Sky'
There are only five superbly well-limned characters in Pearl Cleage's play "Blues for an Alabama Sky." But the depth and breadth of their upbringings, their world views, their dreams and their reality is so rich and varied - and so emblematic of the swirl of ideas in that lustrous, in many ways revolutionary era known as the Harlem Renaissance - that they magnify a story of intense intimacy into a tale of epic scope.

Lene S: And it's going to get even worse. Overcrowded, Congested, Inconsiderate and divided. Hyde Park has become a "Cattle Town" where people come through to eat, drink and be merry. Then there are the people who can't really afford to live in Hyde Park but manage to move into the neighborhood just to be here. How many people can actually afford to shop at Whole Foods and Treasure island? How many people can afford to eat in restaurants everyday? It's really sad. Only the punks, crooks and thieves feel REALLY safe in Hyde Park.

  • Joe Jank: I never see CPD doing anything but eating and watching the females walk up and down the street. Only the Univ Police actual work. Maybe this is why CPD feels like the HP assignment is a day of relaxation. LOL

Indivisible Hyde Park - fighting Trump

Neighbors,

Some friends and I have gotten involved with Indivisible Chicago (www.indivisiblechicago.com), a group inspired by the Indivisible Guide (https://www.indivisibleguide.com/). The basic idea is for people worried about our incoming president to start learning how to apply pressure on senators, congressmen, and other elected officials.

Most of the members are on the north side, and we are interested in starting something down in Hyde Park.

Does anyone know if something like this is going on down here already? Are there groups who would naturally be a part of this? Are you interested?

  • Hilly won like three states. They happened to be the most populous states so she racked up popular vote. Thats the reality of it. Why not create jobs, and lower taxes for the destitute. Seems to me that would help more than creating more give away programs. Unless of course people don't really want to work.

How about bringing back some good paying manufacturing jobs here in Chicago?

United Autoworkers in Michigan all voted for Trump. How about building some manufacturing plants making tanks in East Chicago?

The very word is an attraction for some but a turn-off for others, which is understandable if an old play is presented as a stodgy museum piece, or used as a springboard for some ill-conceived deconstruction. Fortunately, the finest and greatest theater pieces remain pulsing and pertinent for contemporary audiences through the universality of their characters, stories and humanity.
