4 Dead, 30 Wounded In Weekend Shootings

Two men and a woman were sitting in a parked silver car in an alley in the 5400 block of South Ellis at 12:30 a.m. when a male walked up and fired shots, police said.

According to a security alert sent to University of Chicago students, the three victims are not affiliated with the school but ran into a campus parking garage at 55th and Ellis after the shooting. University police also responded to the shooting.

About 6:30 a.m., a 34-year-old woman and a man – thought to be in his 20s – were walking in the 2700 block of North Lavergne when someone got out of a car and opened fire, police said.

Luis A. Perez was found with a gunshot wound to the head about 5:20 a.m. Sunday in the 2300 block of South Washtenaw, according to police and the medical examiner’s office.

Perez, of the 2700 block of West 24th Street, was pronounced dead at the scene, authorities said.

About 10:50 p.m., 36-year-old Courtney Jackson and another man were in a car in the 1100 block of North Springfield, when someone walked up and fired shots in their direction, police said. The shooter then ran away.

Jackson, of the 1400 block of North Lotus, was shot in the chest and was pronounced dead at Presence Saints Mary and Elizabeth Medical Center at 1:21 a.m. Saturday, according to police and the medical examiner’s office.

Two 16-year-old boys were shot about 1:50 p.m. in the 900 block of North Trumbull, police said. The teens were inside a vehicle when another vehicle pulled alongside and someone fired shots, striking both teens.

A few minutes earlier, three men were shot about one mile west in the 900 block of North Karlov, police said.

About 10:10 p.m., Grand Crossing District officers on patrol near 71st Street and Paxton Avenue heard shots fired and saw a van speeding away from the area, according to a statement from Chicago Police.

The officers chased the man — identified as Jeffery Kemp — to 74th Street and Merrill Avenue and ordered him to drop the weapon, but instead he turned around and pointed it at the officers, authorities said. An officer then fired two shots, striking the man.

Kemp, of the 7400 block of South Jeffery, was dead at the scene, according to the medical examiner’s office.

Shuntae, I think you will find Hyde Park to be/feel safe. It's never looked better.

We also have a very large and effective police force, University of Chicago police force who know the problems and tend to be professional, the right amount of deference, force.

There are always a few very predictable days that crime gets out of hand, problems with crowds of youths Memorial Day is the worst.

But, I think you should consider coming back to Hyde Park - 53rd street is now revitalized.

I would agree that Hyde Park is still a safe area, and a great place to be in the city. I feel like it's getting better every day. It is still an urban neighborhood and things happen. I think right now we are seeing an uptick in crimes due to the weather changing and getting warmer. That seems to happen every year. Overall, Hyde Park is still a very safe area, and in my experience, a great neighborhood for families, especially now that more businesses and restaurants are moving into the area.

  • This is a true neighborhood coffee shop!

  • Even better than the atmosphere is the service and the food. Very friendly, kind workers, even to messy young children; the sandwiches are tops and the extra touches to the beverages are special. It's the first place mentioned when we need to meet to talk.
