  • They won't understand that their ill-thought and ugly actions were wrong; this is how they think and "reason." Reason? Rationale? Nope....it's also precautionary to think about what you put on social media. As we've read many times, there are almost always repercussions and those are the ones that become public through arrests, etc.

    Sad...and stupid.

WWP covers the NAM and FTC event on Scams

Last Wednesday at Columbia College was the Federal Trade Commission and the New America Media's Ethnic Media News Briefing: Spotting and Avoiding Scams. As the title suggests, the event focused on educating the audience on the scams that exist and how to protect oneself and one's community. The event featured a panel of experts giving advice and ended with a Q&A session and lunch. From the panel, we learned that some of the most vulnerable communities are college students, low income, African Americans, and immigrants. We also learned that many people who are scammed do not report the incident, which makes it harder to protect oneself. WWP spoke to Steve Baker, Director of the Federal Trade Commission’s Midwest Region. Baker mentioned that 11% of the adult population reported being ripped off over a 12-month span.

DanskGirl: I wish you luck, but it might be awhile before potential retail customers forget the shootings with innocent bystanders and families around in broad daylight, and bricks & bottles being thrown at passing cars.

There is a lot of image rehabilitation that has to happen to the Paseo, which you could be a part of, but unfortunately there doesn't seem to be much real progress being made. There was mention of a new subsidized/low-income medical service provider opening up, and grand plans for another Puerto Rican Cultural Center containing subsidized Puerto Rican artists' apartments that remains unfunded, but not much else this year that I can remember.

The closed Division St. Bar and Grill is probably available. I used to go there but it is a few doors east of Mas o' Menos the motorcycle gang bar and all the illegal things that happen there made most of the DSBG patrons uncomfortable. The nice place closed. The nasty one, which is where those hurled bottles and bricks emanated, remains open.

I personally will take my business to North Ave. near the WOW District or Chicago Ave. where there seems to be police patrolling and a more diverse restaurant, retail and customer base.

A solid business plan might include storefront glass insurance coverage with a low deductible.

  • Thank you for your input. Change has to start somewhere. Bricking cars and drive by shootings were common in Wicker Park as well. Division will see a major change soon enough, just like North Ave and Damen did. I already see changes in the street and pedestrian traffic on Division.
