Presence Saints Mary and Elizabeth Employees Oppose Medicaid Cuts

Last week, hundreds of Presence Saints Mary and Elizabeth (PSMEMC) signed "The Big Letters" to Illinois State Representatives and State Senators -- voicing their concerns over proposed Medicaid budget cuts. Poster-sized letters were on display at both PSMEMC campuses. State officials have proposed significant cuts to Medicaid funding to help balance the state budget. These proposed cuts, about $1.5 billion as proposed, would have a catastrophic impact on PSMEMC and the mission to serve those most in need in the community. The Big Letters will then be hand-delivered to Springfield lawmakers.

Gang leader gets life in prison for 2nd slaying on same Humboldt Park block

Andrew Ruiz, 34, was sentenced by Cook County Judge Domenica Stephenson for the slaying of Adrian Gates, 24, near Grand and Central Park avenues about 7:15 p.m. on June 15, 2010. Ruiz and his cousin, Edwin Carrasquillo, 24, were previously convicted in the slaying.

The two were in a white minivan in the 3600 block of West Grand when they drove up behind a car Gates was in with his girlfriend, prosecutors said. Gates got out and started crossing the street, and Carrasquillo went up behind him, took out a gun, and shot him point-blank in the back of the head.
