  • RAKARWOWSKI RETIRED CITY WORKER, CLEANING UP HUMBOLDT PARK

Earth Day was last weekend. If you were not able to help your neighborhood by joining your neighbors cleaning up in Humboldt Park, you still can. Many neighbors have started groups that clean up garbage on city streets. Start one on your block or if you only clean up the park way in front of where you live, you have done your part. Together, we can clean up Humboldt Park, and every bit helps. Thanks.

Humboldt Cell Tower Nixed After Claims of Health Hazards

In a Wednesday message to his constituents, Maldonado wrote on Twitter: "I am proud to announce that after several meetings with T-Mobile they have agreed to relocate the cellular antenna proposed for installation at 1152 N. Christiana Ave."

Me too. More of you would also be better.

  • SOB, I've lived in a building where the tower was on the roof and it was no big deal. If a tower is built and it's hideous, then I could see property values declining, but if it blends in, like hundreds of antennae sites across the city do, there's no reason for property value to change at all. If you have a study from a reputable unbiased source that shows that even antennae that blend into the building still causes value to drop, I'd be interested to see it.

Michmine, like yourself, I was gentrified out of De Paul. At the time I was considered poor but I learned and now gentrification will not move me anywhere I do not want to go. Now if you have the ability to stop all violence everywhere, go for it! I am just one member of the Humboldt Park community and my neighbors and I have our hands full just attempting to make HP safe again for families to enjoy. When that job is done, maybe I can help other communities but first things first. To post that gentrification is not good is insane! Until someone comes up with a better solution, I am backing gentrification. Most violent criminals will be moved out, some good people who don't know how to handle their finances will be to but nothing is perfect. There use to be two or three shootings and killings on Division Street by my house a year before gentrification. Yes, gentrification has saved lives and made HP and safer place to live again. You keep telling yourself that gentrification is not good or bad, others scream it is awful, I will keep screaming GENTRIFICATION IS GREAT, as the murder rate falls and gang bangers flee now that new people call the police on them.

However, 310 residents within a 1000 foot radius of the proposed installation site at 1152 N. Christiana Ave. signed a petition circulated door-to-door. This petition was given to the Alderman. This petition is the culmination of several months of communicating with the Alderman's office, and following his advice in respectful protest of the proposed installation. The Alderman suggested we gather signatures of residents on a letter against the installation, present it to him, and ask for his support. We have done that and have gotten...more silence.

There is more information about this on the UKV and East Humboldt Park neighborhood watch pages on facebook. Apparently the guy is trained in martial arts and disarmed the guy who pointed the gun at him. At that point, the second assailant struck him on the head from behind. Gun turned out to be unloaded (thank goodness).
The attackers were described as appearing to be two african american teenagers. This is all from what was posted on the watch pages--I don't have any first hand information myself.
