@Frite 47, Why would I be concrened about your block? Because your block is part of our neighborhood, your problems, like crime become our problem, your drainage is our drainage, your schools are our schools etc... While some may wish to be an island in the desert, that's not urban life. This request does nothing to your building, other then justify its height, maybe its width.

Don't get me wrong, people are allowed to park where they want on the street but there are reasons pick-up truck are considered "B" rated trucks and should only be parked on commercial streets. First, Can Mel's office verify that these signs are being passed out legitimately, since his name is on the sign? Second, why is the city not enforcing "B" plates on pick-up trucks? I need assistance in getting rid of the beater truck that has made the front of my home parking spot of choice.

Rezoning Craziness on Wolcott
Sounds like everyone is jumping on the Lycee Francais gravy train. Just saw a new item on the 47th Ward site where someone submitted an application and letters to rezone 4400 AND 4500 North Wolcott from RS3 to RT3.5. TWO WHOLE BLOCKS. And you can imagine my surprise to find out that the five families who signed the letter don't even LIVE on my block. FRIGHTENING!

Can you even do this? Ask to rezone a block full of people where you don't even live? And don't they have to tell you what they intend to do with the property? PRETTY SCARY. Dying to see how this one is handled.
Ghosts don't lie. Check it out.

@jeff f, as recently as February, you were voicing your concern about parking congestion surrounding the Old Town School. You even took a shot at those that "make the case for an 'urban area'". Now, you are pushing for higher density and take issue with a building that provides maximum off-street parking for its residents, in an already densely populated area. If you were truly concerned about the amount of green space, up-zoning is not proper avenue.
This is a blatant attempt by members of the Alderman's inner-circle to enrich themselves at the expense of the neighborhood. (Note that a petitioner and commentator also serves on the 47th ward zoning advisory committee.)
Once this zoning change is approved a precedent is set; a developer on the 4500 block of Winchester would have grounds to appeal the current zoning and request a zoning change. The 4400 block would be next. Soon it will spread throughout the ward and you will think you are in Lincoln Park with the 4 story cinder block condominiums creating urban walls on both sides of the street. If you choose not to sell your home and live in between two towers, built nearly lot line to lot line, you will see your property taxes skyrocket.

He is a very cute Tuxedo cat (see pic - although he looks very startled in the picture!), with all white paws. He is very sweet and aprroachable and needs a loving home. I would guess he is 1-2 years old and he is not fixed. I've been feeding him so he's not starving to death anymore, but he needs his forever home. <3
If you, or if you know someone who would love a lovable little guy to call their own, let me know.

If you are unable to attend please add your issue in a comment below and I'll be sure to address it at the meeting. I'm also including a list of the outstanding items from the last meeting that are waiting on followup from the alderman:
- Policing levels in the 17th district. Does the Alderman think police levels are sufficient? How with the NATO summit effect the police presence in the 33rd ward?
- Street condition on the 4200 Block N Francisco. Sewer is supposedly fixed which caused the pavement to buckle according to a resident who talked to the work crew. Is there any word on when the failed street surface will be addressed?
- Playground flooding at Bateman Elementary School. Playground floods after any rain rendering it unusable. Mandatory recess for the 2012-13 school year necessitates proper drainage. A resident and architect have attempted to get a meeting with the alderman for 2.5 months to no avail. Alderman did call to discuss the matter with no notice resulting in the architect not being able to participate in the discussion. Has the alderman followed up with the architect?

Dear 33rd Ward Resident,
The NATO Host Committee has now corrected itself and says that the Horner Park protest is indeed scheduled for this Saturday morning and not today.
The following is an excerpt from the Facebook page of organizers detailing the activities of the Saturday protest:
On May 19, NATO demonstrators will gather at the Irving Park Brown Line stop, where they will be given hospital gowns with "Healthcare Not Warfare," and, "Clinics Not NATO," written on them. They intend to go door to door in the nearby neighborhood.
At 12pm, the demonstrators will converge on Horner Park at Irving and California, and will then march on Rahm Emanuel's house at 4228 N Hermitage.
Please avoid driving in the area until after 2:00 p.m. this Saturday if at all possible.
Sincerely yours,

Asrar Hookah Public Nuisance Meeting, May 15
A public nuisance meeting regarding Asrar Hookah will be held at City Hall (121 N LaSalle) on May 15 at 10:00am, room 805. Asrah Hookah, formally know as Fire Rock Hookah, has been discussed for many months at the 33rd Ward Advisory Meeting. Apparently if you live nearby (I don't) you know why this meeting is being held. People have reported fights, underage drinking, and loud noise late into the night centered around this establishment. If you would like to voice your opinion on Asrar Hookah to Chicago's Department of Business Affairs and Consumer Protection please attend on May 15th.
Please pass this information along to your neighbors who may not be on EveryBlock.

It's a hidden gem, with a supportive, close-knit staff and student body and tremendous opportunity for individual attention and learning, due to the size and attentive staff. My little guy is never "lost in the crowd" here; his PreK class has only 10 children, with a great teacher (formerly at Nettlehorst) and FT assistant. The campus features a library, a large gym, art, music and computer rooms (even for the youngest children starting at age 3) as well as a playground. Yoga is taught twice a week to all of the kids as well, and Ms. Swan the music teacher is fun-loving and really talented. The kids love her.
Tuition is very reasonable. PT and FT hours are available for preschool-ages (3 & 4) and aftercare up until 6:30 pm is included in the preschool rate. As a parent who did extensive preschool research, Park View is one of the most affordable options.
I wanted to post about Park View because the school would like to grow attendance, and our experience there has been so great. It's tough to find a great preschool option, and Park View has really met our needs- and then some. I'm happy to share more about our experiences there, if interested.
It's located at 3919 N Monticello, and an Open House is scheduled for Monday 5/21 from 9:30-10:30. Should that time not work, please feel free to contact Heather Thornton at 773-478-7203 and discuss a convenient date and time.
Here's a link as well: http://www.parkviewlutheran.org/

The speedbumps NEED to be repainted.I know someone who was on a motorcycle that hit one and flipped over the handlebars and broke his collarbone among other injuries.
Not acceptable. They are there to slow down traffic, but if they're invisible because they blend into the shadows they are causing more harm than good.

I've done work for another alderman and he was floored at what the Speed camera's actually will do. They are not going to be just speed camera's, but have the potential to expand into 24 hour surveillance security camera's as well as having facial recognition software. That will in effect scan the face of every driver and pedestrian that passes by, regardless of crime hazard or security issue. Also my alderman asked who get's this data or how it was going to be used and all he heard was silence. This is all from the city's IT director and was thrown at the alderman 3 days before the finance committee vote. So be prepared to be tracked throughout the city now too. So way to become another yes man Alderman Pawar. First on the horrible ward remap and now on this parking meter part Deux, infrastructure trust. No one can still explain to me how the city is going to pay investors back, can you Alderman Pawar? Because I know for a fact no one really knows how, but you voted for it.

Honestly, I'd like someone to start investigating these aldermen for bribery. And we as a city need to start working toward ending the type of political favors that our mayors use to entice aldermen to vote for things that are against the public interest. All meetings between aldermen and the mayor should be public and recorded. This also means that we get off our collective, lazy butts and get involved. It's funny that a lot of us like to gripe here on Everyblock, but how many of us are going to local party meetings, writing to our Aldermen, organizing block clubs to discuss these things? I've only been in Chicago proper for about a year now, but my general sense is that people here think that just because a politician has a letter after their name that they like that everything will be okay.
Really, you all can get involved now, when we still have some shred of power, or you can get involved when all these speed cameras are tracking your every move and reporting on the type of people you "associate with".
Finally, I would really encourage anyone who is directly affected by either the Infrastructure Trust or the speed cameras to contact the National Lawyer's Guild in Chicago: http://nlgchicago.org/
Once you have legal standing in a case you can start a class action lawsuit with others who have standing to challenge these laws on a legal basis, effectively end-running Rahm and his alderman cronies. Also, keep in mind that Illinois is a ballot-initiative state, and while ours technically are non-binding, any politician who goes against something on the law books from an election would be risking political suicide.
If anyone is interested in organizing ballot initiatives in Illinois to stop this level of corruption, I'd be happy to help out.

They charge 50 cents a pound, $10 minimum for their walk-in service, which sounds pretty cheap to me if you've got 20~30 lbs of this clutter like I do. (Tax records from 1978....)
They have a loading zone, too- don't even have to feed the parking machine.

The Parking Meter Saga Continues
I'm wondering what we as a city can do to punish this company and our aldermen for working in such bad faith. Perhaps a 99% "parking meter operation" tax? Pass a law removing all civil and criminal liability for these parking tickets?

I'm wondering what we as a city can do to punish this company and our aldermen for working in such bad faith. Perhaps a 99% "parking meter operation" tax? Pass a law removing all civil and criminal liability for these parking tickets?
Obviously we should vote out any of the idiotic aldermen that didn't read this stupid contract. Assuming they're still in office.
We're stuck with this thing for 75 years, folks. We can either sit here and watch these "true up" fees increase (especially with the road closures of the construction-season summer, and also from Rahmbo's infrastructure plan), or we can exercise our own power and show CPM that it's our city, not theirs, and that we will not stand idly by while they pick our pockets.

I'm not sure why people are surprised and/or mad at anyone other than the mayors office, alderman, and the city government as a whole. Poor decisions like these are made every day by alderman who get re-elected every year. Fact is the city pays far too much to union workers who don't do the job they are paid to do but still collect massive wages and OT, and then gives them a cake pension. The meter deal was done like the skyway deal to make the current budgets look better instead of fixing long term problems. Eventually the money will run out and there will be nothing else to sell off. Wake up and figure out the city is broken and elected officials are to blame or don't complain!

@bradon, I think you attack the wrong people,; you attack the worker not the boss. If the worker does not put out the right amount of work, who's to blame for the acceptance of that level of production, the worker or the boss? When equipment is broke, who's responsiblity is it to see that the repairs are made, the worker or the boss? When jobs are miss- scheduled and OT is needed to fix the scheduling issue, who's to blame, the worker or the boss? And when the union contract is signed and there is history and knowledge that the wages are too much, the pension payments will not be made and the level of needed production will not improve, who's to blame for signing that agreement, the worker or the boss? And lastly, who normally moves up in city management, Who goes from running one department to another department often times with no background in the mechanics of the services provided by a given department, the worker or the boss?
The meter deal is and was nothing more then the bosses blowing it.....again!

People Gas Inspection ?
People's Gas has sent me a notice that they need to complete an inspection. Anyone have any information about this process. Any nightmare stories to share - or a good experience ?
Why do I dread letting this type thing ? I don't smell gas - but I do smell an excuse to milk my bank account.

Is there anyway to do a search of Everyblock topics?
I saw a posting a while back about wrought iron painters and wanted to pull it up again. I have searched everywhere and can;t find a search function. Am I missing it somewhere???

joan good catch... it's trying to reinterpret site: as a new protocol that doesn't exist, the equivalent of site://foo because that's what browser's do. if you use the search box in the right it works with site: in front but not in the URL bar
-
JoshT Parent, Neighbor, 2 flat owner/glorified janitor"...how hard would it be to just put a search box that searches site:chicago.everyblock.com within this page?"
It would be simple - but think of how it would change the site. Suddenly half of the conversations would be about muggings, street closures and lost Pomeranians - from 2009 ; )

Doggie loose in Albany Park (likely West Highland Terrier)
We spotted this little dude--see attached photo--in the 4500 block of North Spaulding while we were out on our walk. Blue collar, no tags, a bit damp and scruffy. Generally friendly--he was curious and polite with our dog...maybe a bit too curious (she's a good lookin' pooch). He appeared to be unneutered. I was unable to get him back to our yard.
I checked on Lost Dogs Illinois on Facebook and didn't see him listed as missing. I'll hit up some other online forums too, but would appreciate others sharing this to hopefully try and find his owner!

Liz, Thanks. She is the cutest thing too. I hope you find the owner soon for this little guy.

Collecting New/Gently Used Books for Japanese Children Post-Tsunami

Hello,
I am the principal of Chappell School, a world language magnet school in Chicago. I was nominated to participate in an educator exchange program sponsored by the Japanese Chamber of Commerce of Chicago. I was one of three Chicago area educators chosen to participate because of my professional experience and because Chappell plans
to begin a Japanese Studies program next year.
This June we will visit many cities and schools, including areas affected by the 2011 earthquake and tsunami. These natural disastersdestroyed cities and residents still have considerable need. General interest in the ordeal has dwindled and the relief effort is sometimes slow. Psychological care for the victims is becoming paramount as many of them are feeling forgotten by the world and isolated in temporary housing.
I am happy to represent Chappell and Chicago volunteering at two large-scale events, "Chicago Days," for residents of both the Miyagi Prefecture and the Iwate Prefecture on June 23 and 24. Together with Japanese-American celebrities, we will serve Chicago hotdogs, provide entertainment and organize English lessons. We hope the atmosphere will be fair-like, allowing residents a few hours of fun, excitement and laughter. I am organizing a gently-used or new book drive. We hope to collect as many easy English-language children's books as possible to distribute, including books from a Chappell-school book drive and books collected from the local community. All items will be shipped free from the US to Japan by another partner, a Japanese transit company. More than anything, we hope to provide emotional support and fun for the thousands of people displaced from their homes by the earthquake and
tsunami.
We hope all books can be ready to be shipped by May 25.
I hope you will consider a donation of books. Please feel free to drop off books at the Chappell office at 2135 W.Foster between 8:30am and 3pm.
Sincerely,
Joseph Peila
Principal

No Thanks!!
I am very curious as to the motive behind the new 'look' of EB with No Thanks. Negativity abounds as it is on a few of these posts and I don't think we need to nurture or support it. If anything maybe a "REALLY??!!" button...so if you I will assume that if you Thank me you support me and if you No Thank me you also support me, we can't lose.

Furniture Restoration Shop Suggestions?
I have a late 60's danish teak mid century credenza where one of the door handles is cracked (previous owner). It's finally bubbled up to my list to fix, I got all 4 doors popped out today. I'm new to furniture restoration. This handle is intricate and will be tricky to fix. I love this credenza, it took me almost a year to locate it.
Does anybody have any recommendations for wood furniture restoration shops in Chicago? Any where in Chicago or near suburbs is fine, I'm looking for a top notch person for this job.
Thanks!

Thanks everyone for the suggestions, you indrectly led me to Chicago Furniture Revival (http://www.chicagofurniturerevival.com). I ended up chosing them because they specialize in mid century (and I think the only shop in Chicago specializing in mid century). I just got back from dropping off the doors, met with Dan. Super nice, super honest, super professional, reasonably priced ($75 an hour, 2 hour minimum, for comparison, Weber had a $250 minumum). Feel very comfortable with chosing them. I have several projects ahead of me there, so I'm looking at about 7ish weeks. Once I get the doors back, I'll post a review of their work.
You have to email them pics of the piece before they will even talk to you about the work. Once you get past that phase, they are amazingly personable.

Chris Some day a real rain will come...Just following up. Saturday, picked up the doors to my credenza from Furniture Revival. Took about 2 weeks longer than estimated (which I'm fine with), and about an hour over their rough estimate they gave (which I still budgeted for).
Very very pleased with the results. Great work. Overall price was very reasonable. And about the nicest guys possible. They specialize in the mid century modern, and have much love for the the danish modern. I would definitely recommend them.

TomB Neighborhood Real Estate GuyThere is one review about Bell School that seems very positive at http://schoolsparrow.com, although it does not specifically address your question about the curriculum. Perhaps you can ask the question here as well.

I own a dog, I love dogs, but no one's dog should be charging at runners, off leash, scaring the crap out of people. I am SICK OF THIS.
The scumbag's response was to wave at me and ask "Did she growl at you?"
THAT is your response?! That is a huge problem. Thanks, you selfish dirtbag.
Attention runners: carry mace. Use it.
I hope no one's child gets attacked.

B Duggan Mayfairgosh, just realized 911 - of course call 311.
I'm going to try to make the the meeting, will have 3 kids with me tho so not sure
-
Actually, a police commander told me that CALLING 911 IS EXACTLY THE PROPER THING TO DO. I have done this before resulting in a $300-$500 fine to the dog owners. This is the ONLY way that the problem will improve. 911 dispatchers have no problem with this. You need to get the commander in your area to get all the beat cops on board with actually writing tickets and not warnings.

Just to clarify, those unsightly, er, I mean, second division vehicles with B-Truck plates in the state of Illinois can include more than just pickups. It also can mean SUV’s or vans too. That would include Tahoes ... But I suppose we can make an exception for Tahoes ... so long as they're sporting CPD stripes. But those Range Rovers and Land Rovers, especially the ones with rhino bars, are unsightly nuisances and must be banished. Make it so.
so, these school buses that are frequently parked on Kimball are not supposed to be parked there I suppose?
