1968 Lawndale

I'm working on a class project about the 1968 riots in North Lawndale. Using archives and interviews I hope to present this period to the wider audience and contrast it with the better known '68 National Democratic Convention.
Does anyone know of North Lawndale's residents who had lived through that time and perhaps participated or witnessed the events?

First of all, I really hope this project will help North Lawndale to become a better and safer neighborhood and that it will improve the coverage of the neighborhood in the mainstream media as well as expose its rich history to wider audiences.

The project is part of my documentary film production class at DePaul University. I'm a graduate journalism student there.

The goal of the project is to look at the history of the 1968 riots in North Lawndale, what started them, how they impacted the community, and where the community is now, nearly half a decade later, but in no way is it meant to exploit the community.

The project came out of my own initiative. A few weeks ago I drove
through North Lawndale and I was captivated by the stunning
architecture there. Since then I've been reading about Lawndale's
history and I visited the neighborhood and talked to some of the
    residents on several occasions.

During one of my conversations with Mr. Charles Leeks from the
Neighborhood Housing Services in North Lawndale, I learned about the '1968' that happened in Chicago, but wasn't part of the Democratic National Convention. Mr Leeks didn't live in Lawndale at the time, but told me the riots after Martin Luther King Jr death were never discussed in depth in the Chicago's mainstream media. Instead the DNC riots stole the historical spotlight in a way.

This video project, which I hope will be one of many to come from me about North Lawndale, is meant to show that episode in the history of one of the culturally richest neighborhoods in Chicago. I intend to look beyond the stereotypical coverage of certain areas of the city as crime ridden and hopeless and allow the residents themselves to express how they had been affected by 1968 and where they are now with their lives in relation to that time.
If you wish, you can also contact my professor, Joanne Zielinski at 312-362-5132 or zielinski@cim.depaul.edu.

Thanks for being willing to try digital tools. That is why they say in some neighborhoods the DIGITAL DIVIDE is still expanding.

Spread the word to use the INTERNET, email, EB, Crimewatch, Dkstrict Homepage...anything that will get you out of the CAPS loop and the Alderman loop.

Nobody can stay on top of it better than vigilant residents asking that union workers just plain do a good job in our neighborhood.

Catch Dwayne Truss and Me on the Garfield Major Show on Mother's Day

Dwayne Truss and I will be guests on the Garfield Major Show on May 11, 2012. We will discuss a number of topics on the call-in show, including the impact changes to legislation surrounding school boundaries could have on North Lawndale and Austin Schools, and the impact the upcoming Cook County redistricting process could have on local residents of North Lawndale, Austin, East and West Garfield. The show goes from 10:00 pm to midnight on Sunday evenings, on AM-1450 (WRLL). You can stream live on http://wrll1450.com/english/personalities/index.html

We also discussed the Cook County redistricting process. We provided background on how the Census is used to determine representation in Congress; develop political boundaries at the state and local levels and allocate funds for entitlement programs. We expressed our desire that the 2nd District be preserved as a West Side district, and include the boundaries for the 24th Ward and 9th Legislative District.

Hi all, this is my first post here. I am hoping for some advice on how to deal with a situation. There is a terrible smell of human feces coming from the yard of an apartment building on my block. With the warm windy weather you can smell it all around the block. It is revolting. I can barely go outside now, and I don't see how any one else is still hanging out. There are people living in the building, but I don't know if they are legal residents. The property looks like it hasn't been maintained in years. I can only imagine what the inside looks like. I'd hate to see someone removed from their home, but this doesn't seem like a safe place for anyone to be living.

I looked up the address on the city of Chicago site. There were a few building code violations and recent service requests. One sanitation one, and a building violation, but they dont really give you more info than that.

So my questions are
1. How do you start to address this issue? It looks like others have tried to put in service requests, but nothing seems to have changed.
2. How do you find out who owns a building, and who should be maintaining it? The place is becoming a slum. There are problems in the neighborhood, but still a lot of good families that care. I hate to see the block getting worse.

ANy advice would be great. Thanks

YES ThomasP and ThomasL are FABULOUS. They are FAST. They CARE about us. It is too bad that the 311 system has no checks and balances to sift when there are literally 17 orders (meaning staff visits) and jobs are still not done.

Ordering service and not getting service are software failures. Software is defective by design. Remember...software rules the world. It puts us on a path for YES get service or NO don't get service. There are only 2 choices... The no batch inends to spin us like a top and give a hampster mill twirl. In our situation...it inflates the union payroll because jobs get ordered time and time again. Taxpayers pay time and time again because no one holds the street worker accountable because their vote keeps the politicians in power.

Once in the DON'T get service one MUST be resourceful and find a way/path to get things done FAST. Sometimes it can take years to figure out the best path. But there is ALWAYS a way to wiggle in. Begging sometimes help. Stories about desperation will turn even a heart of stone into an ally. It is sorry but my stores are always TRUE. (never fabricate or stretch or lie)

It is the human thing to do; treat all Chicagoans fairly. We have many crimes against humanity going on here...but we will have to lable them civil rights issues for lack of a better enforcible action.

Bad governance is what has BLIGHTED and scourged our neighborhood. Poor people don't have enough power to make this mess.

I don't believe in clean/green stuff. I believe in UNION PEOPLE doing a GREAT job in our ghetto. That fight is a better long term solution. We pay taxes. Union people in the old scale started at $35 hourly...plus overtime. Does that make some S&S people at $70,000 a year??? Yep, it sure does. How hard should a $70,000 a year person work? Why should taxpayers do the job of the person who won't do it that is paid a good salary and pension?

But, information is not universal....it is like TOP SECRET aka clout way...to get service in Chicago.

Bahooey, we need...ubiquitous access for ALL...is the best course of action for ALL. Color blind, income irrelevant, caring about the human condition for ALL Chicagoans...is a GOOD GOAL to strive for.

The problem is...people revert back to old inefficient habits. For some reason...people think an alderman can do a better job than them....This is NOT TRUE. One who is good with emailing can get alot done, perhaps more done...than an alderman. Why? Each driven by passion to clean up a ghetto are committed, unpaid people if they can let go of whining and complaining to set themselves up to be a victim.

No victims here! We are just proactive and want to leave the reactive, defensive, blame game stuff behind. This is a race of the keyboard to be fair, precise in facts, and just drive service to the best that can be had. It is better than any xbox, gameboy, or other digital media game. MAYBE setting up an old SIMS type world would be really really fun for our youth. They could REBUILD this mess and create a new world order :-)

The Saggy Pants Saga

ECONL wants Indecent Exposure Ordinance amended. Judge Ruben Franco of New York in his decision said, “The trend of wearing pants well below the waistline is believed to have its roots in this country's prison system where inmates are issued uniforms which are often too big and the wearing of belts is prohibited due to safety concerns."

Did the prison inmate trend become acceptable in our community because we wanted to be sympathetic toward our ex-offenders?

In September 2010, Mayor Phil Best of Dublin, Georgia, signed an amendment to the municipality's indecent exposure ordinance prohibiting the wearing of pants or skirts more than three inches below the top of the hips exposing the skin or undergarments. Exposure due to baggy clothing is now in the same category as masturbation, fornication and urination in public places.
Those caught with their "pants on the ground" won't just have to pull them up... they'll have to pay up, too. Violators could face fines up to $200.

In Chicago, young men walk around with their “butts out” and saggy pants hanging down offend most people. Empowered Citizens of North Lawndale want the forty-nine city council members and the alderman of the 24th ward to amend the Indecent Exposure Ordinance.

Yes, people have the right to dress and wear whatever he or she chooses, but it should not be offensive to the public at large.

“We the people” are not going to be lulled into the belief that “butts out” and saggy pants are acceptable dress.

Parents must be held accountable for the way their children dress. In his address to the “saggy pants” and uneducated boys on the corner Bill Cosby said, “We, as black folks, have to do a better job,” he stated. “We have to start holding each other to a higher standard.”

As Empowered Citizens of North Lawndale, we want our local politicians to pass an amended ordinance outlawing these butts out “indecent exposure” dress because the current ordinance does not address the issue.

Better Block

Better Blocks, an Active Transportation Alliance program funded by the Kresge Foundation, helps neighbors build healthier communities by connecting activity, play and overall safety with feasible changes in
the build environment. Block clubs and other grassroots groups receive the service of an Active Trans planner
and community liaison who works with the block to identify solutions to issues on the street, such as speeding, lack
of places for kids to play, cracked sidewalks, or noise
and air pollution. A community liaison talks to residents
about what they like and dislike about their block, what
they want to preserve and what they want too improve.

Seth...thanks for doing the new steps! In theory if the alderman is relieved from the petty stuff...he can work on the core issues that keep this neighborhood a dis invested slum.

Breaking the dis investment cycle is pretty easy. One just has to knuckle down and do it. One has to make sure that ALL THE LAWS are enforced and enforced fairly.

CHICAGO

Chicago Public Schools (CPS) today announced that it will hold supplemental Local SchoolCouncil (LSC) elections to fill LSC seats that remain vacant following this week’s District wide elections. The decision is a first for the District and is designed to ensure each Local School Council has fuller councilparticipation when the new two-year term begins on July 1, 2012.Each Local School Council is made up of 12 members with an additional student member at the high schoollevel. As of Friday afternoon, 31 LSCs still needed additional seats filled in order to make a quorum.

Interested candidates need to submit nominating forms at the school of the LSC they are running for duringthe filing period, which runs April 25th to May 9th.
