  • Timberlanes is great old school place. My family will miss LSL terribly. It was fun going back in time and having live music there after the redo. Unique to our hood.

  • FYI - Fireside Bowl was used as a setting for the opening episode of Chicago Fire last season.

@Fiat124 - I understand that longer response times from police can lead to crimes not being reported. There would need to be a large amount of crimes going unreported to account for the downward vector that we're seeing.

Over this summer, two bikes were stolen from two different neighbors' back yards. Neither reported them, because their insurance deductible was higher than the value of the bikes. Garages have been tagged and my neighbors have overpainted the tagging without reporting it. An attempt purse snatch down the block from me resulted in the young woman moving back to Michigan, but never reporting it, since nothing was actually stolen.
A policy change at 911 a couple of years ago has resulted in not sending a beat car out anymore for many classifications of crimes if they have 'already' occurred and aren't 'in-progress' jobs. You get referred to 311 to make a report and if people don't follow through, or if the crime classification is downgraded by the non-emergency call-taker, crime is effectively killed.
Longer response from the police is part of it, but yes, a lot of crime is simply not being reported.

For students, this change will mean traveling an additional two blocks on average to reach their bus stop. CJ, they’re not using the bus-cutting savings to hire more or better teachers. Casey, when my son was in high school the state was still reimbursing for transit, but that was over a decade ago so you may be correct.

  • @CJ Gladstone.... I may be wrong, but based on memory the CPS busing budget is c $50 million ?? annually. IMO if busing was not a cost item that $50million would not be appropriated and spent on anything.

@CJ Gladstone.... I may be wrong, but based on memory the CPS busing budget is c $50 million ?? annually. IMO if busing was not a cost item that $50million would not be appropriated and spent on anything.

Back Story from memory = Chicago arrived at the current busing situation this way: Someplace c. 1965 Chicago's public schools were found to be separate and unequal, with substantially more being spent on neighborhood schools in white neighborhoods than schools in black neighborhoods (Hispanics, Asians and others did not register at the time). The school system was told to level the spending but that proved too hard to do in an acceptable way. So the court decided to let parents bus their kids to a school of choice, making the disparate spending patterns less motivating/source of complaint. White percentage of students in the system went into rapid decline and now is someplace c 11 - 13% (depends on who's stats you believe). So the courts recently said there was no longer a reason to bus for integration & level spending. But the bus habit remains because some schools/areas are deemed more desirable than others. And by direct awareness in some cases the long bus ride constitutes a free baby sitting service. TL:DR = the CPS tries to budget educational program costs uniformly across the whole City. Separate from that the buses cost c. $50 millions?? a year because of parents chasing after schools with better reputations --- which might or might not be factually supported depending on the compared schools.

TL:TL:DR Busing is not cutting into staffing.

After 50 Years, Seven Families Still Live On Chicago's 'Block That Works'

AUBURN GRESHAM — In 1965, the invisible red line — marking where African Americans could and could not get mortages in certain parts of town in an effort by white bankers and others to keep the city segregated — had shifted west and south of the 8200 block of Morgan Street.

When the lights go out or random street crime spills onto the block, the folks living on 82nd and Morgan have a system for getting fast action.
