Humboldt Observer, your link to Lebensraum has gotten me thinking. It was a word with which I was unfamiliar, and I thank you for the education. However, your attempt to equate people who want to live in a safe neighborhood amongst other decent neighbors with being Nazis is quite revealing. You must know a lot about Nazis. I hope you put that knowledge to good use and honor and respect what the Allies did to stop it. So many American men, most of whom were white, fought bravely against Nazi beliefs and policies in WWII just to preserve your freedom; a freedom you enjoy when you make snarky comments about gentrification.

While I am happy when the Chicago Police capture a lawbreaker, especially in my neighborhood, I am no Schadenfreude. I hope the best for those that commit crimes, get incarcerated, become familiar with prison life, and hope when they emerge they have had enough time to think, find out what went wrong, and get on the road to rehabilitation and can repair their broken minds, lives, and relationships, and can get some of the resources needed to help them become a functional member of society.

What I am happy about, such as in this article, is that neglected and unsafe buildings may get renovated and become useful again. It is nothing personal against the guy that owned the building in which that the firefighter tragically lost his death. That is no laughing matter, and I'm glad the city is coming down on him and that we are finding out that being a bad person doesn't pay.

If I had the opportunity to report someone to protect the life of a police officer or firefighter, by gawd I'd be a mensch and do it.

The death of anyone at such a young age is always a tragedy, regardless of the cause. However, I agree with Barbara6 that inside his own home was "...where [William] was supposed to come and feel safe, honored, protected, nurtured, and dare I say LOVED..." Whether in Englewood or Naperville, isn't that the responsibility of a child's parent(s)? By the time a young person reaches high school age, it's far too late to have much of an influence on his morals, character or ethical values, which must be inculcated early in childhood. High school teachers are paid to prepare their students to compete for real jobs in the real world - no more and no less. It's nonsense to say the personnel of that charter school - or society at large - put bullets in William's gun. People who are not qualified to be parents should refrain from having children.
