Tamar Manasseh, left, has kept daily vigil at 75th and Stewart for more than a year.

Abolish the police? Organizers say it's less crazy than it sounds.
Until that moment on Fox News, Jessica Disu hadn't considered herself a police abolitionist. But on July 11, she was on national television, surrounded by 29 other people convened by Megyn Kelly to discuss the recent killings of Alton Sterling, Philando Castile, and several Dallas police officers.

There are some really great movies that were shown this summer, of the ones I know -- American classics such as The Wizard of Oz. I'm glad Wall-E was shown, and Inside Out seemed very good to me. It's interesting (briefly) to adopt a moralistic perspective on these films, and how things have changed (or not) since Hollywood's golden age (under the old Hayes Codes). Cool Hand Luke is a martyr-the-individualist film, with one notable salacious scene and some vivid physical torture. The Sting of course glorifies con men (even if it's in the course of taking down another criminal). Some Like It Hot, one of my personal all time favorites, is about as perverse as a popular entertainment could be when it was released in 1959, and though played for laughs the sexual hijinks, impostures and reversals remain the heart of the film. The public voted for The Dark Knight -- so be it. But maybe in this case curation would help introduce something onscreen less familiar but more heartening for our citizenry.

  • @Jazzmandel: If you are into classic movies, be sure to catch the Coen Bros :Hail, Caesar". Hilarious parody of the studios set in 1950. Probably not appearing in movies in the parks for quite a few years, though.

'Army of Moms' Agree To Leave Corner, Now Looking For New Home

ENGLEWOOD — After this summer, the ‘Army of Moms’ will no longer be on the corner of 75th and Stewart.

Mothers Against Senseless Killings, as the group is formally known, was started last summer after a slaying in the 7500 block of South Stewart. Group founder Tamar Manasseh hoped to stop any retaliatory violence by recruiting area moms to "take over" the area.

Manasseh met with and the property owner of 7505 S. Stewart,  Ald. Roderick Sawyer’s chief of staff Winston McGill and Gresham Police District Commander Rodney Blissett at the police station this week to discuss the conflict.

Only one shooting has happened on the 7500 block of South Stewart Ave. since the June 23, 2015 killing of 34-year-old Lucille Barnes. There have been none on the 7500 block of South Harvard Avenue, another block where the group has set up, according to a DNAinfo Chicago map of shootings in the city.
