Alderman Election

I've had one person stop by asking for a signature to get on the ballot for Alderman. It's a tough decision to sign or not. We, myself included, need to do research before signing. Our neighborhood deserves someone honest and reputable, and someone we know before signing just to get them on the ballot.

  • You can ask questions about what the candidate's platform is before signing. Those asking for signatures should know that answer. Or maybe you'll get lucky and it will be the candidate going door to door. Or ask where the campaign headquarters is and go there to sign and ask your questions directly to the candidate.

I would rather not sign someone on the ballot I've never heard of or know, but never considered as a candidate. I say let the petitioners do their work and circle back around to some who may want to check out a potential candidate; how long and in what condition have they lived in their community, setting what examples, see if people are willing to tell both likes and dislikes. See how you feel about what you hear and decide for yourself based on your own concerns.
It may do some good as early as the petition stage, so we can hope to end up with some really viable candidates running to decide upon. I've often been too dismayed over politics, but when I'm aware of issues I feel strongly about, like many people, it ignites my passion to "yea or nay". I hope we have some great choices and well-rounded candidates this election.

It's so strange to me that 'they' claim we're not in the path - a plane just went over my house, very low, and the contents in cabinets were shaking. Really? I'll have to go to the website Annie02.

My parents owned a home near Forest Preserve Dr./Addison during 70's/80's. Air traffic noise pollution was unbearable everyday in that location (maybe take off flights). With that experience, I can say where I am now is not that bad, YET, except when heavier air traffic occurs around holidays, the landing patterns obviously change and the noise has been VERY disturbing overhead. I do worry where this is headed as expansions increase.

suspicious landscapers

Anybody seeing "landscapers" knocking on doors during the day? They knock on doors, don't leave pamphlets, then leave. They seem like they are just casing houses. We've gotten them a few days in a row.

  • Also watch others, such as any one knocking on a neighbors door, making deliveries, cable installers, delivering flyers, etc.

  • as IC You said, get the info and call the cops that you see suspicious people around. call on anything you see and these outsiders will think twice about hanging around in the neighborhood.

Olympia Park tress cutdown??

Does anyone know why all of those beautiful big old trees at Olympia Park were cut down?? There are now a ton of "stumps" there where these giant old trees have been standing since my childhood. I called the park and was told something about "disease" but I am incredulous. Also, one of the "stumps" now has some kind of painted mural applied to it. This is WAY ugly and now the park is starting to look more like an "inner city" park instead of the nice green haven it always has been. Anybody know what really happened and why these trees were removed??

A park district official with the city contacted me in response. He did not claim to be an expert (certified arborists) per say, even asking my opinion on trees to replant commenting that I seemed to have some knowledge on. He was respectful and willing to discuss.
They are aware of the hazards remaining. I expressed how some trees taken down were not in immediate need as others which still remain continuing the spread of disease and have weakened limbs which have fallen and will continue to.
I agree some absolutely had to come down. The fact remains it was poor planning and a haphazard process.
Multiple diseased and near death trees still remain, including a Cottonwood who's 7’+ branches have fallen next to the play lot sandbox twice (speaking of children being hit) in the last three years; so large one limb remained for over a week blocking walking paths in all directions until removed.
Many remaining trees could benefit from old limbs being pruned back, strengthening them and preventing disease and their take down as well. We dont just have Ash trees in the park in need of care. But the park district doesn’t seem to allow for proper maintenance.
I later contacted the same official I spoke to and thanked him for the planting of so many new trees. It’s the least they could have done to ensure the future health of the park for the community.
If they know people care, there stands a chance they may consider only removing trees that must immediately go without still leaving a handful of dead/diseased trees behind and remove any weak or dying limbs on remaining trees to keep them strong. Larger trees will remain for good health of the people and the community who use the park.

    Thank you for your consideration

PRW, I really appreciate your sharing this and also your conscientious efforts and participation in this. And I am encouraged that a Park District official responded to these posts. That, I appreciate as well.

internet Service Providers OTHER than AT&T??

Our internet AT&T service is horrible, cutting out once every 5 minutes or so. I was even warned this by the AT&T installer, that Edison Park was a "spotty zone" (but dumb me went ahead with it anyway). I know from some neighbors that this seems to be a common issue with AT&T around Edison Park (at least in some parts)--is anyone using another service provider they can recommend? I keep getting marketing mail from Clear, but I've also heard that their service is spotty, depending on your location. Any suggestions?

I just switched from Direct TV to Comcast. Bundled cable, phone and internet. So far happy, and less expensive than ATT for phone/internet, and Direct TV for cable.

Neighbors have Clear, and they love it. However, I don't know if they use abuse it as much as I do, doubt it. As a former manager of SBC/AT&T, your mileage may vary. But I'd stay away from them. My mother is in Norwood Park (by Res), and her DSL is spotty at best. Older areas are not going to receive new plant (cables), as its too expensive to do so. Newer areas are usually going to have better quality service. And while there are some good techs out there, I have some stories of some of the shortcuts I've seen some of the techs do.

  • I've been in Norwood Park for a few months now but have had spotty Comcast. About 5-6 outages lasting from 20min to a couple hours.

Anyone else have good luck with Clear?

Car crash and suspects on foot Monday evening 8/25

I just got a text saying there was a police chase and the suspects car crashed around NW Hwy and Overhill. Suspects ran North on Overhill. All I know right now. Lock your doors, alert your neighbors. I believe this to be true, but is coming to me in pieces.
