Shrinking Congregation Sells Edison Park Church, Gives $100K to Food Bank

"It was a beautiful building," said Lasch, a real estate agent who brokered the sale of the property at North Shore and Oketo avenues. "It was the hardest thing I've done in 30 years."

Shrinking Congregation Sells Edison Park Church, Gives $100K to Food Bank
EDISON PARK - The last several months have given Pamela Lasch a much deeper understanding of the meaning of the word bittersweet. Lasch, the president of the congregation at Edison Park Community Church, was heartbroken to see her beloved church sold and torn down just before Easter after several years of dwindling membership and escalating costs.

Shots Fired

Heard 40-50 gunshots from 2 different caliber weapons between 1150pm Saturday 30 April and 1205am May 1. The gunfire was nonstop for 25 -45 seconds and got the impression it was a shootout between 2 vehicles traveling northbound. Sounded like the shots were coming from possibly Harlem & Touhy or Touhy & Milwaukee. CPD put out a shots fired call about the same time around Milwaukee & Devon. Anyone else hear this?

  • nickytheear Experiencing Chicago from Corner

It was not gunshots, it was fireworks from the Orthodox Church in Niles. I was awake at that time watching TV and thought the same thing. Until I looked out the window and saw them going off.

  • ls

i heard it but i thought it was fireworks. i live near touhy and harlem.

  • Hope it was fireworks.

privacy screen question

Can someone tell me if it is legal to put up a tall (7-8 feet) privacy screen (around my patio) that would be on the inside of my existing fence? My patio is lower than my neighbors sidewalk and steps and I notice them always looking over my fence too often. Thanks.

When my wife and I bought our first house, my father told us that we should embrace our nosey neighbors. I was puzzled at that statement, however, he went onto say that those are the ones who will and are watching your property....our home. In understanding what he said, I made it a point NOT to have our neighbor side fence higher than five feet and the pickets spaced. This is so we can see anyone who may be outside the fence. To see who is coming and going. The fence off the alley is six feet and the pickets are spaced, too. We try to make it a point to know our neighbors enough so not to intrude with them, but to watch. So, in the event something seems out of place of sorts, a call can be made to the police. I want our neighborhood to be safe for everyone, but not for the bad guys. I want them to be very concern that we will not tolerate their prowling.

Look, our police officers understand that we, too want a safe neighbor....and so they! There are a lot of police officers, firemen and city workers that live in Edison Park, Jefferson Park and also Norwood Park, so its to all our benefit to call.

  • ls

oh Monte, if only that were true in this case. There was a small fire in my kitchen when I was not home. When I told her about it all she said was, yeah, I heard the smoke detector going off for a long time. Really? Who does that? She knew where I worked and never called. Unfortunately, she is nosy but not helpful.

We do need to keep calling on anyone/thin suspicious. I have done that twice in the last few weeks: once for a full back pack lying 5 feet away from the RR tracks in the road at the Norwood Park station (Raven). I was waiting for my 7:08 train and had to get on before the police arrived, if they ever did. I called at about 6:57 a.m. I also, called about a black male who was walking north on Nickerson at about 6:45 a.m. and yelling at the top of his lungs. I had seen him before and not called; but, decided to do so this time as he was so loud that you could hear him before you could see him. Also, did not see a response and had to continue on my way to the train. So, not sure if a squad showed up or not. But I do know that the response time is not fast by any means.

Drywall Finished

I wanted to follow up my posts on drywalling of my basement by Mario. He and his crew did a terrific job and I would not hesitate on recommending them for any drywall work you may have. I was extremely happy at how they took pride in their work and actually cleaned up the drywall dust before priming the walls.

Thanks for the great recommendation to Pat at Chicago Builders.

Case in point, look at her June 6, 2014 inspection. One and only one item mentioned in the inspection report. The inspectors were there for maybe ten minutes and 8 of those minutes was to complete their paper work. And btw, she was in the middle of her term as alderman during this inspection. So yeah, I've got a problem with people being given uneven and unfair treatment because of who they know.

Chicago’s First Metra-Oriented Development Proposed in Edgebrook

Ambrosia will present the proposal at the next meeting of the ward’s zoning committee on Wednesday, May 4, at the Olympia Park fieldhouse, 6566 North Avondale.

This article has 4 other Chicago locations (Show)

The development, at 5306 West Devon, would be only a five-minute walk from Metra, and a short pedal to the North Branch Trail. Image: Google Maps

...a quarter-mile east of the Edgebrook station on Metra’s Union Pacific-North Line, 5438 West Devon. Despite the long distance from the Loop, the train commute between Edgebrook and the Loop...

...extension that will take the trail three miles further southeast into the city, to around Foster and Pulaski...

However, putting docks by the new development might not make much sense from Divvy’s point of view. The nearest existing station is more than three miles southeast at St. Louis and Catalpa, by Northeastern University, and the system isn’t slated to expand northwest this year.

    Streetsblog Chicago
So far, almost all of the 30-or-so transit-oriented developments planned, under construction, or completed in Chicago have been near CTA stations and within a few miles of the Loop. However, a four-story condominium building planned for the Edgebrook neighborhood on the Far Northwest Side would be the city's Metra-friendly TOD, more than 11 miles from Daley Plaza.

Sorry to learn this happened to them. Ironically I went into that store for the first time about a week ago or so. Scary what is happening in the neighborhoods now, our quiet area isn't as crime free anymore. We need to have more police presence in our area.

Loud man walking on West Circle then north on Nickerson

Has anyone HEARD this man (black, wearing hoodie with hood up)?? I walk to the train between 6:30 a.m. and 7 a.m. and he walks the direction that I mentioned yelling loudly.
I can never understand what he is saying but it is LOUD. I have seen/heard him several times and this morning I called 911 and will continue to do so if I see/hear him again. Something about LIVES is what I think that I hear..... anyone else been woken up by him?? Talk about disturbing the peace....

  • If the police don't respond, call the desk sergeant at 16.

  • Believe me I will, my husband retired from 16.... I intend on calling every time I see this man and his loud mouth

  • Call 911. There is something wrong with that guy. Some one needs to check it out, If nothing else, he is disturbing the peace
