Daycare near Edgewater?

So our son is about to turn 2 and our current daycare in uptown is moving further south. Does anyone have any recommendations for something close to Edgewater? The only ones i've seen seem pretty scary...

Dog-Friendly Apartment Needed for June 1st

Neighbours,

I'm a responsible, reliable, professional tenant looking to move into a dog-friendly studio or 1 bedroom on June 1st. I currently live in a 2 bedroom in Ravenswood and I love the area, but I would also consider moving to Edgewater, Buena Park, Uptown or Andersonville. My dog is an older, large, potty-trained and well behaved mutt (not a pit mix).

I prefer to be contacted directly by owners or building managers and not brokers. I would also consider a sublet situation if there was a possibility to renew the lease.

Please get in touch!

  • Julie Uptown/Andersonville

Try Bil-Mar Management - I think they have two buildings in the area and are dog-friendly.

  • Nick 4600 Block of Paulina

I will give them a call, thanks!

How Many of Us Cross Devon East of Damen on Bicycles?

Looking to show support to Active Transportation Aliance (ATA), Loyola and others for a dedicated NS route from end of bike path to points north.
This would be away to assemble a list of potential supporters.
If you support a dedicated NS bike route please like this thread.
Currently the official route North from the LSD bike path is North then West on Granville. If anyone has any comments on the commute west on Granville please articulate below.

I'm not sure bikers should be going against one-way traffic. They're supposed to follow normal traffic rules, right?

  • Bruce Mayberry

@Bill that is my exact southern route. I like it because it is very tranquil and goes through so many school zones. I feel safe with the kids in tow. Once the kids are dropped off then I have tried many routes and try to eliminate the really obnoxious speed bumps. This morning I took Thorndale West and was pleasantly surprised how nice that was. It does get quite narrow once a block or so East of Broadway. hauling a trailer by bike can be quite an experience.

Mini rant

Just got back from a nearly weeklong vacation in D.C. What struck me is HOW CLEAN everything was ... from the lack of litter on the streets (not just on the Mall ... we were all over the city) to the strictly enforced "no eating" rules on the Metro. And then we got back, transferred from the Orange Line at Roosevelt, and stepped right into a puddle of urine on the elevator with our luggage. Sigh...

  • I happpened to walk down State Street yesterday from Jackson to Washington on the west side. Smelled like a urinal that is never cleaned. The smell stopped just short of the Burnham Hotel with its outside cafe. The city should be cleaning this area with bleach or some such cleaner every morning. It is a disgrace. I actually thought about moving to the loop recently. Not after what I experienced.

Compared to many cities in Europe, Chicago is pretty clean. The two big mistakes in Chicago are:

    (1) an overhead rail system — a huge scar on the landscape wherever it goes: who wants to live next to that noise and sight? so the el lines have acquired a sheath of poorer buildings, crime, etc. The cause of this mistake was a decision, years ago, to build cheap: but maintenance expense has far outweighed the initial savings, and now it's near impossible to put the lInes underground. Back when Chicago was less built‑up, it could have been done. (Building the CTA was kinda like buying a Windows computer because they're cheaper than Macs.)

    (2) the lack of culvert-type drainage. We drain off rain water via small drains often at corners. Predictably, they clog and fester. A running culvert system, where water drains along the entire street, combined with slightly cambered pavements, keeps streets clean.

But even despite that, we're cleaner than Rome or Marseille or Milan, and (depending on the decade) Paris. Like Moscow, Washington is a showcase, there's big money to keep it presentable.

  • why do you have to pay impound fees if you are a victim of a crime?

  • PhoebeK10 Rogers Parker since 1991

wow. Recovering stolen merchandise is pretty rare, from what I hear. Glad to hear you got your bike back. Sorry to hear it was stripped and dropped. Was it dusted for prints? Is CPD pursuing leads to arrest the thief/ thieves so maybe you could also recover the fees? Sux that your baby was stolen, but it's practically a miracle you got it back. Of course (being the victim of theft, I'm speaking from personal experience), you'll NEVER recover the time and aggravation.

Living and Playing in Chicago

Edgewater Play Groups?

Hi-am soon going to become a mom and although I have plenty of time to research this, I was just curious how does one go about joining or collaborating with other parents with small children and infants in the area? Are there playgroups or parent groups/organizations in the neighborhood? I would like to hear your suggestions for those parents raising children in the city, and especially here in Edgewater-thanks!

  • The neighborhood group WANT in West Andersonville hosts a indoor playlot Tuesday and Friday mornings from 9-11 a.m. at Summerdale Community Church, 1700 W. Farragut. Free and very informal -- just time and space for caregivers and kids to hang out.

    Hey DK,
Sorry I'm a little late in responding, but I started an Edgewater New Parents Group through meetup.com in January 2012 as a way for new parents who live in and around Edgewater to meet and bring their little ones together for play dates, walks, and more. The ages of the children in the group vary - with 2-week-olds all the way to 18-month-olds. We currently have a walking group that meets every week and some sort of play group each week as well (book discussion group, baby food swap or just hanging out). The best way to find out info for the Edgewater New Parents Group is to go to our page and join the group. And just so you know - although we may bring food or drinks to share, everything we do is free. Here's the page: http://www.meetup.com/Edgewater-New-Parents-Group/

Multiple readers have informed us that Clark Street was shut down tonight by Chicago Police due to an apparent bomb threat.  A suspicious package was found at a gas station on Clark arond 6PM, and the street was closed from Granville to Devon while the bomb squad was called to the scene.  The “all clear”  was given around 9:30PM.  As more details surface we will update this story.

Don't forget this weekend is the popular "Trash to Treasure Swap."
Sponsored by my office, the 49th Ward Green Corps, the Rogers
Park Business Alliance, and the Clark/Morse/Glenwood SSA, the
"Trash to Treasure Swap" gives you an opportunity to clean out
your attic, basement or storage locker of unwanted items.
Instead of throwing those items in the garbage to be taken to a
landfill, bring them to the Swap where someone else may find use
for them. In the meantime, you might find an item or two at the
Swap that you could use back home.

The Swap this year will be held in a vacant warehouse located at
1765 W. Touhy (between Clark and the Metra tracks). On Saturday,
May 19th, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., drop off things you no longer
want or need, but are still usable for others. Come back on
Sunday, May 20th, to take home a treasure or two.

Those who drop off items on Saturday get tickets to the "Preview
Pick-Up" for first dibs on others' unwanted stuff. The Preview
Pick-Up will take place on Sunday, May 20th from 12 Noon to 2 p.m.
Certified school teachers are also welcome during this preview
period to obtain classroom items. After the Preview Pick-Up,
the doors will open from 2:30 p.m. to 5 p.m., to anyone else who
wishes to avail themselves of the remaining hidden treasures.

Below is a list of the kind of items you can bring to the Swap:

Household Goods
Toys
Art
Furniture
Craft Materials
Hardware
Jewelry
Kitchen utensils & pots & pans
Appliances
Lamps
Knick Knacks
Leftover Wrapping Paper
Baby strollers & furniture
Bed frames
Books (please, no textbooks)
DVD's & CD's
Building Supplies
Bicycles, bike parts and accessories
Bookshelves
Packing materials
Electronics
Holiday Decorations
Garden Supplies
Plastic bins
Lawn Chairs
Exercise equipment
Sporting Goods
Office supplies

Please do NOT bring clothing, shoes (except sports equipment),
mattresses or upholstered furniture.

Food Drive

A couple of weeks ago, I received a brown paper bag in the mail. The purpose is to fill it with nonperishable items. The bag is to be left for your mail carrier to pick it up on Saturday, May 12th. Is anyone else aware of this drive & will the mail carriers actually pick up the food bags?

Eddie do you know if the post office will take them tomorrow Monday - Saturday drop off was not even remotely an option for me :(

  • Yes they will. The food we collected is still at the station. I believe it will be picked or dropped off sometime this week. Or if you call and tell them you left food out that wasn't picked up we could come by for it

Blastomycosis outbreak in Chicago?

Hi, Just read this article about a potential outbreak of blastomycosis, an invisible toxins dogs inhale and often die from. It mentions Hollywood Park, Legion Park, North side 60659 area.

http://www.dogheirs.com/events/409

Please check it out and if you walk your dogs there, don't until we learn more. And if it's true, these areas should be roped off! My friend's dog Audrey is currently battling blasto and it's a tough road ahead, not to mention crazy-expensive. Please check out info about Audrey progress. There's a lot of valuable info for dog owners to be learned at this site.

    HI Kimberly and all-
A few days ago I decided to contact Kathryn Janicek, a morning producer at NBC. I told her about blasto, that Andy Avalos was kind enough to take up the cause on his Facebook page, and asked her if she'd be willing to do a piece on this disease in order to alert dog owners that if your dog seems ill and your vet doesn't check for blasto—as we know that many don't know to—people are at least armed with the right info to do right by their dog. Of course I said these areas need testing, too. Kathryn wrote back and said a piece was done on it already. Anybody see it? My search came up empty.

I think a little park district pressure is in order. But it won't work if they don't feel are numbers are large enough.

I have searched high and low and have found NOTHING. The only near local article I found was from a veterinarian, Dr. Ned Bartlett who reported a dog, small terrier/chi type in Jan 2012. Vet stated the dog probley contracted it in the fall of 2011 “recently been diagnosed in the Winthrop Harbor/ Zion/ Waukegan area” That’s the closest I have come_and believe me, I have been posting and looking_so they are blowing smoke
    Here:

    List of symptoms is EXTENSIVE.
    http://www.animalhospitals-usa.com/dogs/dog-health/dog-blastomycosis.html
Currently my dog is slow to move, tires easily, allergies erupting _and I am keeping VERY CLOSE eye on him. It can be mistaken for shedding, tired due to allergies, heat; I will be devastated if this turns out to be a fungal infection. Nearly 18k it has taken Karen already to treat Audrey for only a few months.
This is nothing to play around with.
There have been no report except the letter i sent to Alderman O'Connor in Ward 40. He posted it in excerpt and added that it was/is rare in humans. (not so)
NO ONE HAS FOLLOWED UP HERE
THERE ARE NO SIGNS POSTING WARNINGS OR INFO
THERE HAS BEEN NO TESTING BY ANY AGENCY DEPITE MY LETTER IN APRIL TO DEPT OF HEALTH AND PARK AND REC AND THE MAYOR
I will simply continue to post on all their FB pages untill i contact the vet assoc as suggested
