Presidential Proclamation -- Day of Remembrance for President Abraham Lincoln

DAY OF REMEMBRANCE FOR PRESIDENT ABRAHAM LINCOLN

- - - - - - -

BY THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA

A PROCLAMATION

President Abraham Lincoln believed that we are, at heart, one Nation and one people. At a time when America was torn apart and our very future was in doubt, he knew our country was more than a collection of States, and that we shared a bond that would not break. One hundred fifty years after President Lincoln's death, Americans join together across the Union he saved to honor his memory and celebrate the freedom for which he gave his last full measure of devotion.

A self-taught man, rugged rail-splitter, and humble lawyer from Springfield, Illinois, President Lincoln believed in the fierce independence that lies at the heart of the American experience. But he also knew that together, we can do great things -- that it is through the accumulated toil and sacrifice of ordinary women and men that our country is perfected and our liberty preserved.

President Lincoln understood the immense sacrifices required to give meaning to our founding principles. With enduring faith and steady resolve, he led our Nation through Civil War, knowing the blood shed was in painful service to those same ideals. He sought to reunite our people not only in Government, but also in a freedom that knew no bounds of color or creed. It was in this spirit that he issued the Emancipation Proclamation, forever joining the cause of our Union with the advancement of liberty. As our Nation gave birth to a new era of freedom, President Lincoln charted a course that would help bind the wounds of a divided country and bring healing to a people who desperately needed it.

“My fellow Americans, ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country.” – John F. Kennedy

Just about three decades before President Kennedy delivered that famous quote, three American Legion members from Illinois were living his vision. In June, 1935 Hayes Kennedy, Harrold L. Card and Matthew J. Murphy convened the very first Boys State at the State Fairgrounds in Springfield.

About two hundred boys from across Illinois attended the camp designed to give young men an opportunity to learn the operation of American government on the local, state, and national levels. Their learn by doing approach had the boys create a mythical “51st State” (or in 1935, actually a mythical 49th State).

This idea took off as the second session saw attendance triple, and by 1937 Illinois Boys State had 1,200 in attendance and many other states began to develop and host their own Boys State camps. Currently all states except Hawaii have Boys State programs and the American Legion Auxiliary hosts Girls State programs across the country.

While every state and every program is separate and unique, they all follow the same basic ideas founder and “Father of American Legion Boys State,” Hayes Kennedy built into the original Illinois program.

Illinois Boys State is a youth citizenship development initiative of the American Legion. It is for boys who have completd their junior year in high school and have at least one semester/quarter left to complete after attending Illinois Boys State 2015 (June 13-19). American Legion Post #134 will sponsor two boys to attend for free. Illinois Boys State is held on the campus of Eastern Illinois University in Charleston. If you are interested, please contact Jac Charlier, American Legion Post 134 at jac.charlier@gmail.com.

The party meetings are less memorable to me partly due to not knowing the young lady our party elected as candidate for GS Governor. Instead, I remember working on a citizen from my community's write-in campaign (making posters and buttons, helping with slogans, etc.) My party's candidate, the Bunny Candidate, won the Governor seat. A few of us left the convention celebration because we did not want to do the bunny hop. Instead, we sat out in the lobby and discussed prejudice, inequality, poetry, and life in general. There was nothing wrong with the silliness, but some of us who attended were not the type.

Oh, though folks are only allowed to bring limited supplies for campaigning, the young ladies who ran for major offices had planned their campaigns far in advance-- even down to wardrobe changes. Just a heads up if your kids ever go & want to run for office-- no prep ahead allowed but definitely plan ahead!

I've tried to include the positives and negatives. Overall, I enjoyed it. In the spirit of full disclosure, another young lady from my hometown attended with me, but she went home the second day. She didn't like having to dress up every day and she wasn't into government and history (though she is now an excellent nurse :-) ). Also, she was incredibly homesick.

I hope that helps! If you have any other questions, let me know."

A totally fantastic experience. I am an alumnus of Illinois Boys State 1964. Yes, we had cars in those days and electric lights. No cell phones or internet, though. My best wishes to those who are selected to attend!

Did you find your candidates? If not, how about promoting the opportunity at the local parks and high schools (Taft, St. Patrick, etc.). We need an ad for the bulletin boards. Also, how about spreading some flyers at the Downhill Derby at Merrimac Park, April 17th? Do you have any deadline for the applications?

  • Jac Charlier AKA Citizen Jac Citizen-led solutions for better community

Thanks Minerva... We do share it with high schools. As for a flyer, their is a PDF brochure downloadable directly from the website.

Increase in O'Hare airplane noise and pollution and you, the citizen

I invite you to join the Fair Allocation in Runways (FAiR) Coalition, a citizen-led initiative that gathers democratically. We are a rapidly growing coalition of citizens and civics on Chicago's NW side and near NW suburbs.

    What is FAiR about?

FAiR seeks a real voice at O'Hare to secure an equitable distribution of takeoffs and landings, day and night, east and west, and using all existing runways including the diagonals. FAiR is the leading voice for residents on this issue.

    What does FAiR believe?

It is our Coalition's experience that citizens and civic organizations concerned about the severe impact on our communities from increased noise and air pollution occurring as a result of the new October 2013 runway configurations have not had a real seat at the table in the development and implementation of how O'Hare takeoff and landing patterns were designed. FAiR supports the economic engine that is O'Hare, but we believe that as our neighbor, the airport must work with the community to determine when and where those engines fly over our homes, yards, schools, parks and businesses.

    What can you do?

As a neighbor, resident and fellow citizen, I ask you to join FAiR at www.fairchicago.org. Then...
Sign up for FAiR Coalition emails. Go to www.fairchicago.org and click on "Join Now"
Sign our online petition at www.fairchicago.org
Report your noise complaints which can be done directly through our website at www.fairchicago.org
    Appeal your property taxes
Put up a FAiR yard sign
    Distribute FAiR door hangers
    Tell your neighbors about FAiR
Become active with FAiR in your community

Still have questions? Please ask. Jac Charlier - jac.charlier@gmail.com See you around our neighborhood.

  • This is great to know how and where we can voice our concerns. I'm close to I-94 however and the traffic helicopters in the morning and the late night speeder's on the expressway are even a greater disruption for me then the airplane traffic.
