Gunshots?

I know the difference between fireworks and gunshots, and I just now heard at least five, maybe six gunshots coming from the vicinity of Whalen Pool on Devon. There were at least two serious accidents on Devon tonight (earlier, before 8PM), and now this... WTF is going on here? It's not even a full moon.

The Neighborhood Connection Project: Were You Part of It?

Hello Neighbors,

Were you part of the Neighborhood Connection Project (NCP) at anytime since we started in March 2010 until now? If so, NCP wants to recognize you by name on the golden tiles that will connect the East and West murals.

If you donated time, we need your name.
If you put up even one tile, we need your name.

If you cleaned up one afternoon, we need your name.
If you donated resources, we need your name.
If you donated funding, we need your name.
Heck, if you donated, helped out or pitched in no matter how or how much, we need your name.

Send your full name to Jac Charlier at jac.charlier@gmail.com or Gina Metelica at gina.metelica@gmail.com as you would like it to appear on the tiles by April 30. Once we pass the deadline, we will have a very limited ability to add new names other than those from Summer 2015.

The Neighborhood Connection Project (NCP) is a citizen-led initiative to build community by beautifying the Metra railroad underpass located at Hiawatha and Lehigh. Upon completion, NCP will be the largest outdoor public art bricolage mural on Chicago's NW side. Thanks to funds raised and tremendous financial support from After School Matters (ASM), NCP will again employ 30 local teen apprentices.

NCP Is joined by our ongoing partner Green Star Movement (GSM). GSM worked with ASM's teen apprentices, our local artists and community volunteers to produce the mural on the East side of the underpass, which was completed as part of Phase I in Summer 2013. Phase II was completed in August 2014 when the West wall work was finished.

During summer 2015 we will finish the project by joining the two bricolage murals together in the center. The joining of the East and West sides of the mosaic will be done in the same way our American railroads were completed...by meeting in the middle with a golden stake. In the case of NCP, we will use golden tiles.

For infoc contact Jac Charlier, Gina Metelica or check us out on Facebook.

More information about Illinois Boys State is here: http://illinoisboysstate.org/

“My fellow Americans, ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country.” – John F. Kennedy

Just about three decades before President Kennedy delivered that famous quote, three American Legion members from Illinois were living his vision. In June, 1935 Hayes Kennedy, Harrold L. Card and Matthew J. Murphy convened the very first Boys State at the State Fairgrounds in Springfield.

About two hundred boys from across Illinois attended the camp designed to give young men an opportunity to learn the operation of American government on the local, state, and national levels. Their learn by doing approach had the boys create a mythical “51st State” (or in 1935, actually a mythical 49th State).

This idea took off as the second session saw attendance triple, and by 1937 Illinois Boys State had 1,200 in attendance and many other states began to develop and host their own Boys State camps. Currently all states except Hawaii have Boys State programs and the American Legion Auxiliary hosts Girls State programs across the country.

While every state and every program is separate and unique, they all follow the same basic ideas founder and “Father of American Legion Boys State,” Hayes Kennedy built into the original Illinois program.

  • Dennis 28 year Jefferson Park resident

A totally fantastic experience. I am an alumnus of Illinois Boys State 1964. Yes, we had cars in those days and electric lights. No cell phones or internet, though. My best wishes to those who are selected to attend!

Greetings Neighbors!

We are pleased to announce that the Neighborhood Connection Project is back for its final summer.

Started in Spring of 2010, the Neighborhood Connection Project (NCP) is a citizen-led initiative to build community by repairing and beautifying the Metra railroad underpass located at Kinzua, Hiawatha and Lehigh. Upon completion, NCP will be the largest outdoor public art bricolage mural on Chicago's Northwest side. The joining of the East and West sides of the mosaic will be done in the same way our American railroads were completed...by meeting in the middle with a golden stake. In the case of NCP, we will use golden tiles.

The themes of the mural were decided by the community and the actual art reflects both our neighborhood's history, as well as the greenery and vegetation of the area. Special homage is paid to our Native American predecessors and the famous Hiawatha train that ran on these very tracks.

After securing the input and support of a diverse (and still growing!) cross section of the citizens, civics, businesses, the 41st Ward Aldermanic Office and other community organizations, we were joined by our ongoing partners, Green Star Movement (GSM) and ASM. GSM worked with ASM's teen apprentices, our local artists and community volunteers to produce the mural on the East side of the underpass, which was completed as part of Phase I in Summer 2013.
