  • Jimmy Mac if archeological resources are an issue they generally don't advertise the fact. You don't want people randomly digging in the woods or anywhere else on public land. If you go to the forest preserve website you and search for archeology you will find a master plan for cultural and natural resources.

    Chitowngal,

I this and example of opinion stated as fact? Do you really know this for sure or is this mere conjecture on your part? I did as you suggested and came away scratching my head. Look, natural resources consist of land, water and wildlife communities in the forest preserves. Cultural resources consist of archaeological sites and artifacts left behind by early human societies that lived in the forest preserves. This particular objection was never voiced by the planning & development project leader as a reason why my alternative alignment would not be considered, so why did you bring it up? It is interesting to note, at this juncture, that you are not even aware of the alignment of the alternate route that I proposed before suggesting reasons why it might not be a workable solution. Since you introduced this notion, the burden rests solely with you to cite some examples of archeological sites and/or artifacts that would be impediments to implementation of my proposal. I contend that there are no known relevant cultural resources in the Phase 2 trail location that are of any concern. The bottom line is that what you have suggested, but have yet to substantiate, is much to do about nothing.

I have a quibble with the subsequent xtension ... Pase 2 which is problematic by design. I exchanged emails, and spoke with a Senior Planner, in the Planning & Development Department of the Cook County Forest Preserve. I proposed a prudent alternative alignment of the Phase 2 bike trail before bids even went out. The alignment I proposed is not flood prone, does not conflict with federal design standards, and aligns with the southern corridor, near Foster, such that it would have no impact upon connection to the future Weber Spur Trail ... all moot points raised in objection to my proposal. In Labagh woods, the design plan is to cross three sections of roadway, bisect a recreational area with two picnic groves that requires persons to cross the trail from parked vehicles to access the groves. The alignment makes for a fundamentally flawed plan that is oblivious to the exposure of trail users to hazards inherent by design. I was informed that no one had ever expressed concern about this safety issue until I had. My proposed alignment addressed this issue by completely eliminating all three roadway crossings and bisection of the recreational/picnic grove area. Unfortunately, my suggestion was injudiciously disregarded as was risk to trail users personal safety in violation of one of the plan’s primarily objectives … trail user safety. Planning and design teams are uncompromising. It is obvious to me that an agenda is firmly in place. Indifference to input from those who will be impacted, Phase 2 is rolling forward. I am an avid cyclist, but I cannot support a project so ill-conceived and poorly implemented. I tried in earnest to be the voice of reason and raise moral consciousness of the planning and design team, but to no avail I can honestly say that I tried my utmost to do the right thing on behalf of the trail user. I didn’t fail. The planning and design team failed!
