Speed Limit Cameras on Foster

How can we volunteer to have Foster Avenue, between Elston and Kimball, set as the first area to test the speed-limit cameras?

This section of Foster is clearly posted as a 30 MPH zone, yet because of the large area of parks and little parking there is a very large amount of speeding down this street. It's a real threat to pedestrians, senior citizens, children, bicyclists, and other using the public streets.

This would be a good place to test the system. Speed limit signs are clearly posted along the route and new signs wouldn't even be needed.

Recently, I filed an ordinance authorizing the City to exercise its powers of eminent domain to buy the building. This is not a step that I take lightly. I have consulted with the Mayor’s administration, and we remain hopeful that we can preserve this critical economic engine without implementing this solution.

It is not my intent that the City enter into the theater business, nor is it my desire that the theater be turned over to a non-profit. Both options would remove this substantial property from the tax rolls, severely impacting the Portage Park Tax Increment Financing District and the Six Corners Special Service Area. Instead, if necessary, the City would buy the building and sell it to a private business ready to preserve and enhance the current use of the theater. State law allows for this type of purchase and resale within TIF districts.

I wouldn’t contemplate taking this extraordinary step if the historic Portage Theater weren’t critical to the redevelopment of Six Corners. Several restaurants and potential cultural attractions are waiting for the resolution of this issue before they come to our community. The church’s proposed use for the Portage would make it impossible for anyone to get a liquor license within 100 feet of the building. It would make it impossible for anyone to get a public place of amusement license within 250 feet without the church’s permission. Because the Portage Theater building is so large, these zones would extend to the south side of Irving Park Road, in addition to Milwaukee Avenue near the theater.
The proposed use would gouge a huge hole in Six Corners where there would be no new restaurants, and where any proposed theater or entertainment venue would require the church’s permission. It would stifle development at a time when Six Corners is ready to take off.

I continue to remain ready to help Chicago Tabernacle with alternative sites.

Another letter writing campaign

I saw the below in the Tribune today about Three Floyd's wanting a brewpub in Chicago. If they don't have a definite location yet, sounds like a nice anchor for 6 Corners or vacant lot on Lawrence by Jeff Park CTA/Metra.

From story linked below:
The most revelatory news is that owner Nick Floyd is scouting locations to open a Three Floyds brewpub in Chicago. He has been looking at spaces during the last couple of weeks, and though coy about the where ("anywhere but the Loop") and when ("the near future"), he sounded resolute about it happening.

The conversation was a bit strange. He claimed that 1.) he was concerned about the visibility in the area and the need for security 2.) wasn't trying to sell anything but since he was with another guy who was working on an installation in the area, he decided to go around and talk to some of the houses. We politely declined the 'free' ADT equipment and installation. The whole thing seemed a bit off. Maybe he was an honest guy, but it seemed very strange for someone to walk door to door to try to make a deal like that.......at night. Did anyone else have a similar experience? Has anyone ever heard of this type of thing before?

Thank you guys for the feedback. I took your advice and contacted ADT today. I was told while it is possible that an ADT salesperson will go door to door looking for business, doing so at 7pm at night is unusual and offering 'free' equipment and installation in exchange for displaying an advertisement is very unusual. The operator was unaware of any current ADT offer like this. I'm convinced this was a scam and posted this just so others are aware. Asking for a business card, ID and office contact info is great advice. Thanks again and by the way i don't find any of the above responses insulting. This was my first post and I'm encouraged by the responses. In my opinion, we need to keep each other informed of things like this so we can watch out for each other. That makes for better security than an ADT system could provide!

About 2 hours later, a friend's son was walking the dog and this car pulled up, the driver motioned him to come to the car. The passenger GOT OUT OF THE CAR, started walking toward him and started asking him for directions. My son said nothing to him and immediately ran away from him and ran home. A police report was made.

About 2 months ago, the same described car was in this area and approached another girl. In that incident, there was a man and woman in the car. Male with same long haired description. A police report was made.

What You Can Do

Alderman John Arena’s office proudly announces another win for the Portage Park community. Filament Theatre Ensemble signed a lease Wednesday for the ground floor space at 4041 N. Milwaukee Ave. in the Six Corners Business District.

In August, 2011, Filament worked with Ald. Arena’s office and Arts Alive 45 to find a space for its experimentally staged "Naked City Glow". After performing "Four Actors in Search of a Holiday Memory: A Living Diorama” in a vacant Six Corners storefront window in December, 2011, they began the search for a permanent space in the community.

Filament Theatre members were bowled over by the support of the local community and businesses. “It’s the first time we felt like we had come home,” said artistic director Julie Ritchie.

Ald. Arena’s initiative to showcase the landmark theaters and assets of the 45th ward to artists aims to build on the reputation of the nearby Portage Theater for films and of The Gift Theatre for plays and improv comedy. “We know we’ve got a great location. We know we have the space and the talent. Now we can demonstrate we are committed to growth.” said Ald. Arena. Filament Theatre Ensemble will take part in Arts Alive 45 events during this summer’s Jeff Fest in Jefferson Park and Six Corners BBQ Fest at Irving Park/Cicero/Milwaukee.

The Jeff nominated Filament is opening "Hank Williams: Lost Highway" on Friday, June 8th at the Anthenaeum Theater, 2936 N. Southport, its last production before coming home to its new Portage Park location.

jp is right gang bangers rarely cause trouble where they live (rob people or gangbang or deal drugs directly in front of their house), they cause trouble in other areas, some commute, sometimes it does get back to where they live thou. that is what makes it difficult when confronting someone in your neighborhood, they know where you live, but you don't know where they live (specifically). they can easily get reinforcements that you might not be able to get and put your family at risk for retailiation, that is why it is important to look out for your neighbors and call police if something is going down or looks suspicious or not right.
police are always asking for our help, we need to make sure that we are giving it to them and need to be more assertive and detailed in description and account of events. if bad things are going down snap a picture, record it, call it in. get the evidence if you can.

Let your alderman know what's going on, and what your concerns are. Call, the cops all the time. Many of them live here, or in areas similar, and they want the neighborhoods safe too.

When in doubt, call. Don't put yourself out there and confront the troublemakers, and I'd hesitate to take a picture, unless you're 100% sure that you'll be able to do so without drawing suspicion. You certainly don't want to be in their cross-hairs, especially since they'll now know where you live, and what you look like. Let the police handle this. But again, if you don't call, they won't be there.

And we do more than just sit down; I've taken several of them on tours of these areas to show them the true potential of our community.

A critical part of this process is demonstrating the needs and desires of our community. We all want entrepreneurs and employers to settle in our ward, but we also want to encourage a greater variety of retail options here. That's where I need your help. Please take a few moments to fill out this survey about your vision for business growth in the 45th Ward. Help me show business owners exactly what our neighborhood needs and will support. MeterSave - Read the fine print!

I was looking at my water bill which has gone up by $100 and there was an insert for MeterSave. It says:

A 7 year guarantee that the water bill will be no higher than it would have if the meter had not been installed. Bill will not exceed the assessed rate for that year.

So are they really saving? Sounds like your bill is locked in for one year. Then after that first year it will be no higher than what I currently pay with out a meter?

Has anyone else's bill gone up? If so by home much?

On a more positive note, I'll chime in with earlier posts regarding the installation. For us they installed an indoor 'meter reader' so we could read it easily when we want to check our usage. There is another meter that the Water Dept can read from the outside without having to come in, so win-win.
We also got a new shut-off valve that we can use without having to call them to do it from the outside, so another plus.

Dog Park
The dog park will be relocated to the northeast section of the park and be enlarged to about 10,500 sq ft.
Work to start in June taking about 6 wks to complete.
There will also be other improvements made to the parks plumbing, etc. and other minor improvements made to other community parks as part of this effort.
Existing dog park will remain open during transition.
The existing location can be returned back to its prior use for ice-skating.
Several residents asked some general questions about the design, hours, drainage issues etc. The alderman, gent 1 and gent 2 answered.
State Rep. spoke very briefly, comments not substantial, other than implying he had something to do with obtaining funding.

Res 1: Was a park usage survey done before decisions made regarding the dog park?
As she believes it’s required residents within a 5-block radius be surveyed prior to usage changes.

Alderman O’Conner: No it hadn’t (not sounding sure) and the dog park was put in motion prior to me taking office.

Res 1 pursued the issue and the Alderman stated that it wasn’t an issue for a public forum, they could discuss privately.

Overall the audience favored dog park relocation and improvements.

I drive and walk by several times a week and at different times, and I have never seen anyone parked in the crosswalks. The hours are honored because they lock it , but I think there should be no hours, as long as the park is open.

It never looks dirty from the inside or outside when I walk by. So it is cleaned by the ppl who care about it.

Dogs have been running around that area long before any park was officially built and there was no formal concern that anyone was citing at any time. No one is going to get hurt for any reason that is related to the dog park. The same ppl with dogs have been driving and parking and walking in that area for DECADES!

that is what i am saying it gives two dates but does not say which date is which side. the site states that you have to check the posted signs to see which side will be swept first. at one point or another you have to go outside and physically check a tree for what side is first. what if i plan to be away, what day can i plan on leaving my car on that side in advance. i would have to leave the two days pending to move the car until i see what side is first.

How Many Ways Do You Engage?

Fantastic to see so much activity on EB and it is still growing. Wondering if you engage with neighbors and citizens in other ways too specifically around community issues and activities. Maybe Twitter? Belong to your local civic group? An advocacy group? Block club? What else?

I called Graffiti Blasters a month or two ago about some gang tags on my neighbor's garage. It was cleaned up within 24 HOURS!!! Very impressive.

  • Yes aldiablo, when I had some on my garage I filled out a form on the City's internet 311 page and it was promptly removed.

Tracking Street Cleaning

With street cleaning season in full swing, I want to share an online resource to make sure you're safe from towing and tickets.

http://www.chicagostreetcleaning.com/

This new website uses Google Maps technology to allow Chicago residents to look up local street cleaning times for their specific location. You can also learn more about contesting tickets and what to do if your car is towed. You can also learn more about contesting tickets and what to do if your car is towed.

Try Andy F., I have known him quite a while, he has done plenty of work for my neighbors and they all loved him. You couldn't beat his prices. He's done this for some time and started his own business about a year or two ago. I think you'll like him. 773-968-7852.

THANK YOU FROM ST. CORNELIUS!!!

Thank you to everyone who helped collect, count and sort cans and bottles for St. Cornelius School. We received word yesterday that we won the Dream Machine Recycle Rally and the $50,0000.00 prize. This would not have been possible without the help of our fabulous community!

Loading loading

  • The prize is $50K! My understanding, it started in the fall and they were leading for a long time then they started to fall behind a bit and that was when I heard about it here. So I started saving and delivered them a few weeks back...pretty generous prize but I think a lot of people were working on this to sort and count at the school. They worked for it!

  • zoeandzanesmom 8 year Jefferson Park Resident

Yes, the prize was $50K, sorry about the extra zero..I was just really excited that we won!!!

Soda Tax????

Did I see on the news that there is a 'sugary' drink tax up for vote in the city council today? 15-30 cents tax on soda? I don't even drink soda and I am not happy about the idea of this tax. Just when I thought they have figured out every way of getting every last penny they could out of us, and just on the heels of the speed camera vote, I see this. Holy (%^#. When will it ever end??? I have a rather amateurish idea: why don't the elected officials in city council figure out how to spend less and stop figuring out ways to tax more??????

  • You can have this thread. It's a beautiful day; I have better things to do with myself than argue with people I don't know and don't care about.

    Peace.

Edgebrook Library

After carefully checking the web site for the Wednesday hours of operation, I just went to the Edgebrook library only to find it was closed. Sign on the door indicated an "all-staff institute day." If businesses closed for the day to have a meeting, they'd be out of business!

    It's Memorial Day.

The Chicago Public Schools will also be closed.

I thought the had the libraries open for a couple of hours on Mondays, to accommodate the kids after school.

  • Bob,

Edgebrook Branch is open on Mondays from 2PM to 6PM.

But, it will be closed the 28th due to the holiday.

Summer Camp at Eugene Field Park

Eugene Field Park at 5100 N. Ridgeway still has openings for summer camp! They offer daycamp from 9-3pm and Extended Camp (for working families) from 3-6pm. It’s a popular program. Parents can receive 50% off the fee if their child gets free or reduced lunch at school. They would just need to get the lunch letter from school stating they get free or reduced lunch.

Summer Camp lasts Monday, June 25 through Friday, August 3. Ages 6-13. $333 for traditional camp and $167 for extended camp option. Register online chicagoparkdistrict.com or visit the Field House.

Other areas of the city have waitlists for summer camp-- so lets make sure all of our kids have somewhere to be this summer.

It's a nice camp. My son's never attended, but I've done some activities with the kids and the counselors are really motivated. I run the park garden and we're bringing in a multi-session garden program for the campers this summer.
