I guess someone has to complain to have that happen. Do not count on the 20 and 30 somethings running this site to read all the comments to determine what should be deleted. The comments deleted were well thought out and it is a shame they were erased so easily. A major flaw of ED. For instance, the comments about the adlerman's salary. Is that on topic for speed bumps?

Garage door postings (again)!

Last night I pulled up to my garage to find yet another flyer taped to my garage. After reading all the posts and the research Ald. Cullerton did, I called the place and told the guy he can be fined and to cease immediately. The flyer was from ARCE construction 773-953-7318 with lots of misspellings on the flyer. Ald. Cullerton, can you follow up and try to get another one off our block?

@southsideandy, i agree a clean neighborhood goes a long way, i sweep my alley by my garage even. i think it is important that details are up kept, it shows that the neighborhood is observant and alert . i think generally when people see people outside maintaining their house and immediate area, it shows that there are people at home and they care. i will help out my neighbors if they need help and they will do the same. it is nice to come home from work and not have to shovel snow, because my neighbor knew i would be working late and he figured it was the last thing i wanted to do. also, by the same token when he comes home from work on a nice day, his lawn is mowed and we could enjoy a burger on the grill.
if you just let people post things haphazzardly on your garage it shows a few things:
    you just don't care.
you did not even see the person hanging out by your garage and they could have targeting you for a burglary .
you never even check on your garage to even know it is there, puts you at risk for a garage robbery.
it lets people know that there is no one around and if the neighborhood is not going to notice a piece of paper on their own garage they probably won't notice hearing a glass break and listen for it a second time, until they realize later that it was their neighbor being burglarized.
maybe if they only noticed that small piece of paper on the garage, they would have noticed that their neighbor were not home.

  • Jo, I want you to know that I am working very hard with the Police and the community to keep the gangbangers on the run as well. I certainly agree with you that this is more of a priority than the illegal posters, but that doesn't mean we should give them a free pass to prey freely on our community...I have not come across a single company that posesses the required business license to work in Chicago.

I just received the following alert from the 17th District CAPS Office:

On May 12th at noon, in the area of 5500 N Lowell, a 12 year old child reported that he was walking his dog when a maroon or burgundy 4-door car pulled up beside him. There were 2 male occupants in the auto, both being described as Hispanic, in their 50's, with one of them being further described as 5'10", approximately 160, with long, black hair and a medium brown complexion. That man got out of the car and asked the child if the street they were on was Kildare. The child was uncomfortable enough to run away, but the man followed on foot for a short distance. When the child looked back, the driver motioned to the child with his finger to come back to the car. The child ran home and the car was last seen driving towards Bryn Mawr. The child's younger sister had reported seeing the car circling the block earlier that same day.

If you should see this vehicle or any auto or persons acting suspiciously, or attempting to speak with children please call 911 immediately. Try to get a detailed description of the auto (license plates if possible), the direction the auto is going, and a description of persons inside the auto.

It is important to remind your children that adults do not ask children for assistance, they need to ask other adults. Remind them of stranger danger even if the person doesn't seem dangerous, or even seems friendly, or injured, or in need of help. Make sure your child always knows to leave the situation immediately and get a trusted adult to help them or the person in question.

Speak to your neighbors about this incident so that they know what's going on in the area.

If you have any information about this incident or any others in the area, please call 911 to speak with an officer.

We also have a 3 and a 5 year old and my son has figured out how to unlock the lock on our side gate, so we have reinforced it. However, this could happen to anyone and I am so glad that your daughter knew the right thing to do in that situation.
Take care and thank you again for the descriptions. Seems we are seeing more of these types of boxy older model cars around lately in our neighborhood. I'm on a busy corner North of Irving and will make note of any plate #s fitting this vehicle's description if possible.

Last week, signs went up in front of a few houses so that tree trimming could be performed. They worked on one tree. I asked a worker if they were going to do the tree next door to my house. It has a large dead branch overhanging the street. Worker brushed me off, said no all those trees are gonna come down one day because of the disease. So I asked how long he thought it would take to get to this one considering there are probably 80,000 of them in the city.

I know resources are slim, I know that services need to be requested but it seems strange to me that the equipment was there, workers ready to go but they couldn't cut the dead branch off.

  • Anna, I know it may sound confusing, but it depends if the workers were working on 311 requests OR if they were working on an area "blitz".

You can call my office if you are in the 38th Ward and submit the address and I'll try to see if it's possible to get the tree trimmed during the next blitz. If you're in another Ward, call the Alderman's office to see if he/she can try and help.

Fun exercise classes?

Does anyone know of any fun Zumba/Jazzercise-type courses offered this summer on the NW side (and reasonably priced)? Thanks

  • If you go to the Zumba website, you can find classes based on your location. Immaculate Conception has classes with 2 great instructors 3 days a week. They run 6 week sessions and the pricing is as follows: Drop-in = $10 per class, One day per week = $48, Two days per week = $85, Three days per week = $100. I do the 3 days per week, and it works out to about $5.50 per class.

Police presence in our neighborhoods during the NATO summit

I'm kind of hoping some can answer this question for me be it an alderman or another resident. With the NATO summit I'm expecting a lot of officers being present at whatever protests will be held in the downtown area. I would like to know if there will be a decrease of police in our area doing their usual patrols during this time.

Her original bill was for 30 minutes but through negotiations it was dropped to 20 minutes.
Granted children need recess but do we need a state law for this. Chicago and the State are crumbling and our Senators are debating and voting on recess for children. How ridiculous. What is the old saying while Rome burned Nero fiddled. We need to stop the foolish music and man the hoses.

  • Tom K. Lifelong resident of Portage Park.

OK. I didn't say whether I agreed with the merits of the bill you brought up. All I said was that there are other issues that need to be addressed, and the General Assembly seems to believe that recess was one of them. That's just one example out of many bills that have already passed this year that have nothing to do with the financial mess.

  • kenji my email is: chicagokenji @ gmail

@ekop, yes recess is a state issue. It's the health and wellbeing of the children in their care. Just like their nutrition is when eating a school lunch.

It seems there is a calico female, who I believe is not fixed because 3 males (must be) won't leave her alone they follow her constantly. I have a feeling the calico lives on Cullom and is let out. Not sure, Anyway there is a gray cat,(not the one just listed on here, she checked, not her's) a yellow or tan one, and the other one is always hiding in bushes and it's dark when I'm around there. Not sure if it's gray or tan. But if you're looking they usually hang between the 2 houses in the bushes area or by the front stairs. Hope this helps someone.

Graffiti at Merrimac Park

I've been noticing a ton of new graffiti all around Merrimac Park. Someone actually wrote all over the sidewalk on Irving with what I think is marker... stuff about "Cobra Killers" and all that other garbage. All the signs, electrical boxes, etc. surrounding the park have new graffiti on them. I will be happy to take some pictures and post them if that will help identify these useless pieces of garbage. This needs to stop now BEFORE it escalates and they start shooting each other up.

Well then everyone in that household should be out looking for it until they find it. and you cat owners are the worst!! My job leads me all threw the 16th district, and last nite I can't even tell you how many beautiful cats I seen roaming the streets, in good neighborhoods. Like Central & Foster, Central & Bryn Mawr, Northwest Hwy & Austin. But then when their cat doesn't come home after a couple days they wonder. It's not home cause it's probably been run over. Not only that but cats are predators and they like to catch mice or rats. You know what happens when they catch one who has ate bait? They suffer the same death. They bleed internally, until their dead. You still think it's a good idea to let your cats roam? I had an episode last nite with 2 cats on different streets that didn't want to move out of street. I had to beep and yell at them. Now let me ask you cat owners, you think the punks do that? I'm here to tell you NO. They aim for them. The city needs a way to make money, start fining all these people who leave their cats out. This pet thing is just too much, be responsible or don't have a pet at all!!!!!!!!!.

I don't know that much about cats other than the one "neighborhood cat" that hangs around a couple of houses around me because my neighbor feeds it.

Here are my recommendations to keep your dogs safe…

1). BOND WITH YOUR DOG - Make sure that your dog looks up to you and won’t want to leave you. Sit down daily, cuddle with them and give them a treat. Also take them for a walk around the neighborhood so they know how to find your house.
2). SPAY / NEUTER – Spay / Neuter your dog to reduce its urge to wander looking for a mate.
3). COLLAR AND TAGS – Your dog must wears its collar 24/7.
a). The collar should not be to tight or too loose. You should be able to put 2-3 fingers under the collar. Check it every day. Also the collar should not be pulled over the dog’s head.
b). The collar should hold the Rabbis Tag, Dog license and ID Tag.
c). ID Tag should contain Dog’s name, Your Name, 2 phone numbers (Home phone, Cell phone or Work Phone), your address is optional. I used http://www.terrificpets.com/pet_id_tags/
4). MICROCHIP – Microchip your dog. The microchip is about the size of a grain of rice that is injected under the skin. It does not hurt. It can be done by vet or animal shelter.
a). Check the microchip by the vet periodically. My dog’s microchip failed after 5 years. I suggest that all vets scan for the chip during the pet’s annual checkup.
5). MOVING – When you move, update your microchip records and replace the ID Tag.
6). SECURE YOUR YARD – Check your yard to make sure it is secure
a). Padlock your gates. I had kids run through the yard leaving the gates wide open.
b). Inspect your fence and property looking for ways the dog can get out.
c). When your dog is outside, keep an eye on it. My dog doesn’t want to stay outside for more than 20 min. I check on my dog every 10 min. to see what she is doing.
7). LEASH YOUR DOG – Keep your dog on a leash when it is outside of your house / yard.

  • Your neighborhood cat may be not fixed. It's important to fix outdoor cats. Do you have any additional info on this cat?

Tis the Season to get your garden gloves on :)

I just wanted to share with my fellow flowers/garden lovers, I think this year, the Brickyard Lowe's has a great selection of different types of flowers, plants, etc...!!! :) They even have a sale/clearance section which I was able to find great buys !!! Almost done with my annual flower potting etc. and can't wait to watch all my flowers grow and bloom through out the spring and summer season. Looking for great prices and wonderful selections, my recommendation is to visit the Brickyard Lowe's garden center. Enjoy your flowers and garden.
Your fellow friend and neighbor, Amelia :)

Hi Albert !!! I would love to come, but, I am scheduled to work at the dental office that day :( One thing I dislike about having to work Saturdays because I miss out on things such as your project. However, I am grateful to be working, while a lot of folks are not. I wish you all much success as you all will be hard at work and making our community beautiful. I am sorry I will be missing out, but, thank you all (ahead of time) for your hard work and dedication. Looking forward to my day off to swing by the Dunning-Read Conservation area and acknowledge all the volunteers hard work. Thanks, for the invite and make sure to drink plenty of H2o !!! :)

The district is experiencing a downward trend in burglaries in that we are currently facing an INCREASE of only 14% over last year (year to date), which equates to 281 burglaries versus 246 burglaries (an increase of 35 burglaries).
In the LAST WEEK we have had a 36% DECREASE in burglaries over this same week last year.
In the last 28 DAYS we have had a 7% DECREASE in burglaries over this same 28 days last year.
Officers have arrested approximately 20 subjects thus far this year for burglary and we are currently seeing a downward trend surrounding burglaries.
Burglary is a difficult crime to solve in that there are rarely witnesses. Burglary offenders typically commit burglaries during the daytime hours because they don’t want confrontation or a witness to their crime in that many residents are likely at work during the day. They often use prior tools because these provide a quiet means of entering a residence and they most often enter from the rear or the alley because there is less chance that they will be seen by someone.

I heard one ex-criminal talk about how he tries to "blend in" to the neighborhood, how he scoped things out without being noticed--dressed like other residents, strolled around. My husband was working on our car in the driveway and a guy walked by--he seemed inordinately interested in the array of tools my husband had laid out. Luckily, our very alpha dog would be the one most likely to greet him should he decide to come a'calling--not only that, but my two 6'4" sons are home on and off all day. Surprise!

The neighbors and myself have contacted 311 and your office numerous times in the past regarding the sewer located at 5941 W. Waveland Ave. The owner has a handicapped spot that she can’t even park in. It is Monday 6/13/2011, we have had water sitting for 2 months now!! This water stinks, not only outside but also in our homes through the sewer system. I have seen the water dept. come check it numerous times but, nobody does a thing about it. The problem is getting worse, Alderman Tim should take a ride by and check it out himself. Not only does it stink, I’m sure it’s unhealthy and will also be a great breeding place for mosquitoes. I myself have talked to Ald. Tim through everyblock recently about the rat problem we have in area, this could also be contributing to problem. Because the water is not going down sewer, when it rains bad, the grounds out here get so wet that it causes water to come in my basement, it has nowhere else to go. Something has to be done about this, it needs to be fixed. I hope you will help. This is a copy of e-mail I sent to Ald. Tim's office on Monday. Waiting to hear something.

@Ald. Tim, they were here this afternoon, sucked up all the water, Checked the sewer out, did whatever they had to do and left. I hope the problems solved. That was a really fast response. We'll have to see how it goes next time it rains. I'm keeping my fingers crossed. LOL Have a nice day and again Thanks.
