Spreading the word

Hi,
Just want to let pple kno that there are a few hispanic males who are knocking on doors and asking for some else or saying that some one sent them to check out pipes. They try to distract the person in the house or have them show them somthing outside. While the other enters the house and robs them. This happened to my parents who are old in the little village neighborhood. Its sad when your own race is doing this to their own pple. Well jus warning you all out there if you alone or parents live alone. Pass out the word.

Catch Dwayne Truss and Me on the Garfield Major Show on Mother's Day

Dwayne Truss and I will be guests on the Garfield Major Show on May 11, 2012. We will discuss a number of topics on the call-in show, including the impact changes to legislation surrounding school boundaries could have on North Lawndale and Austin Schools, and the impact the upcoming Cook County redistricting process could have on local residents of North Lawndale, Austin, East and West Garfield. The show goes from 10:00 pm to midnight on Sunday evenings, on AM-1450 (WRLL). You can stream live on http://wrll1450.com/english/personalities/index.html

We also discussed the Cook County redistricting process. We provided background on how the Census is used to determine representation in Congress; develop political boundaries at the state and local levels and allocate funds for entitlement programs. We expressed our desire that the 2nd District be preserved as a West Side district, and include the boundaries for the 24th Ward and 9th Legislative District.

We will meet next week to begin to prepare quilt blocks for the quilt. If you are interested in helping out, please, let me know. We are also pulling together quilts for the Bethune Service Day. We have commitments for 5 quilts to date, and we need commitments to complete 5 more by June 1st.

Car Burglaries

I just received information tonight about a subject who may be responsible for the recent car burglaries in the entire area around Cermak and Keeler. These burglaries are usually done by pulling the lock on the driver's door.

Here is the description of the subject seen around 3 am, looking in cars:
male black; 25-27 years old; dark skinned; thin build; around 5'5"; clean shaven; walks with limp (possibly right leg)

If you see this subject hanging around, call the police.

Better Block

Better Blocks, an Active Transportation Alliance program funded by the Kresge Foundation, helps neighbors build healthier communities by connecting activity, play and overall safety with feasible changes in
the build environment. Block clubs and other grassroots groups receive the service of an Active Trans planner
and community liaison who works with the block to identify solutions to issues on the street, such as speeding, lack
of places for kids to play, cracked sidewalks, or noise
and air pollution. A community liaison talks to residents
about what they like and dislike about their block, what
they want to preserve and what they want too improve.

Let me know if you are available to help pull them together over the next 3 weeks

We are setting some dates & times for community meetings to discuss and participate in Public Art Projects for North Lawndale. If you would like to help improve N.L. by increasing the arts and artists in our neighborhood and it's subsequent beautification....please email me. thanks again, Dianna

Going on 6 months trying to get my sewer cleaned.

Unbelievable but true, I have called 411 on 13 occasions to get my sewer cleaned and they will not escalate the issue to a supervisor; does anyone have any ideas outside of trying to talk to Chandler - which would do nothing?
Thank you

  • Seth Barnhart Ten year Garfield Park resident

I have had a much better success rate with the Alderman's office since I started emailing with pictures and my phone number included. My alley is much cleaner since I took GPB's advice about emailing the powers downtown.

  • gpblight 15 Yr East Garfield Resident

Seth...thanks for doing the new steps! In theory if the alderman is relieved from the petty stuff...he can work on the core issues that keep this neighborhood a dis invested slum.

Breaking the dis investment cycle is pretty easy. One just has to knuckle down and do it. One has to make sure that ALL THE LAWS are enforced and enforced fairly.
