Garage break ins

I live on the 2400 block of North Long. Friday night my neighbor an elderly lady, her garage was broken into. About 5 bikes were stolen. All belonging to her son. Police were called. So please be on alert!

Chicagonewbie first step is to get and use a dead bolt on the service (small) door. Make sure the bolt is more than 2" long and goes into a deep strike held by long screws. Consider reinforcing your door frame that holds the strike. Marketed as a security bolt and probably will require some carpentry. Second step is to thwart entry through the big alley door. A common attack is to pry open any seam and use a coat hanger hook to reach up and pull the emergency disconnect. Some people remove the little ball or handle on that rope, but that reduces its utility in an emergency.

One thing I've seen to prevent the coat-hanger-pushed-up-to-catch-the-manual-pull-down-latch and open the alley door is to put a cable tie through the opening of the latch. It prevents someone from being able to apply enough force with a hanger to break that, but a person pulling hard from below on the emergency cord will break the cable tie and open the latch.

    Here's a video demonstration:

For my own garage, I don't use the side door to access. After the side door was busted open one time, I put two brackets on each side, and use a 2x4 to bar the door. I just go in through the alley door.

I also have one of those a simple motion detector in the garage pointing at the big door. (like this: http://www.harborfreight.com/wireless-security-alert-system-62447.html I paid about $12 for it.) I covered the LED light with black electrical tape. Every time the big door is opened, the ringer goes off in the house. If it goes off and I don't expect someone is using the car, I go outside to see. So far it's worked very well. Once or twice I've gotten a false alarm, which altered me that the battery was low.
