Drains aren't draining ever since construction on main water lines

A couple months ago the city began construction on our neighborhood to replace the old water mains and ever since then our drains have been making a weird noise kind of like water bubbling. It hasn't been much of an issue until this week that our toilet started flushing extremely slow almost to the point of not flushing, water from the drains coming back up as we wash and the sewer outside in our yard is full of water. Everything is backed up. We don't know what to do. Is there someone we can contact about this? We're scared this is going to escalate and flood our whole basement.

  • Really sad to hear that, Adam. Perhaps you could contact your Alderman's Office again, this time in writing by email. From all that you've shared in posts here, you can create a concise history of city work done and the effects on your household drainage as well as the plumber's...

Really sad to hear that, Adam. Perhaps you could contact your Alderman's Office again, this time in writing by email. From all that you've shared in posts here, you can create a concise history of city work done and the effects on your household drainage as well as the plumber's synopsis. See about getting the Ward Supervisor involved to help expedite remedy for your situation. If the city did something that directly impacts your drainage, that is a sanitation issue and they need to be responsive and provide remedy. In the event that doesn't get action, perhaps look into legal representation.
Again, very sorry for what you're going through -- plus more rain is coming tonight.

  • Just remembered something re insurance, there's a difference between coverage for flooding versus "water backup." It is very unlikely you would need "flood" coverage in most Chicago neighborhoods, but water backup coverage is definitely worth carrying.

Diversey and Laramie traffic detours during construction and 5 Ton residential street limits.

During the closure of the Diversey and Laramie intersection traffic is re-routing itself down the 5100 and 5200 blocks of Schubert, Parker, Wolfram and George along with the 2700 and 2800 blocks of Leclaire and Lockwood. While the increased side street traffic is to be expected, what was unexpected was large semi trucks, dump trucks, car transport trucks and many other vehicles that have to be over 5 tons. Is there still a 5 ton limit on side streets? or is that no longer the law. This increased truck traffic on the side streets is creating several pot holes especially near speed bumps. Also the roundabouts are being run over and destroyed as the trucks make turns that they cannot fit through. While a lot of this might be expected during this time of construction another issue may be arising. A neighbor, that works for the water department has noticed that water mains near some homes, especially by speed bumps, are beginning to leak and bubble up water. He has reported this issue to the department and to the alderman. I'm hoping that these leaks are repaired by the city and don't become the responsibility of the residents.
