Street closings for NATO Summit

Hi everyone. Another EveryBlock neighbor recently shared this link and I just thought I'd pass it along:

http://www.chicagonato.org/secret-service--road-closures-announced-for-nato-summit-press_release-15.php

So is anyone making any changes to their daily routine to account for the Summit next week? Have you heard anything else about preparations the city is asking residents/workers to take?

  • Justin K. McKinley Parker since 2008, south sider since 1998

If you thought Venetian Night was bad for traffic, nothing will beat NATO TRAFFIC MADNESS! The cynic in me wonders how many of these closures don't relate to security, but instead are designed to limit protesters' access to getting their message across.
We were thinking of heading to the kite festival in Lincoln Park on the 19th ... not too sure if that's a good idea now. I'll have to see if my better half can work from home on the 21st, too.
Also, Becca, congrats on your pomotion!

GE Spacemaker washing machine repair

Does anyone know a reliable appliance repair service that can give an estimate without having to make a service call? During a power outage my units machine went out with a full load. When power was restored, agitator was inoperative and I am sure I need a new agitator motor. Sears told me it would be at least $75 to come out, but they had no idea of what an agitator motor replacement costs.

Clark and Roosevelt mystery crosswalk/stoplight

Q: There’s a working stoplight on Clark south of Roosevelt, that doesn’t seem to have any purpose or function. What’s the deal with this vestigial traffic light?

A: The Chicago Department of Transportation (CDOT) installed this signal during the 2004 rehab of the Clark/Roosevelt intersection, when the Clark underpass was built, says spokesman Pete Scales. The stoplight was included for a future access road to a housing development planned for the vacant land southwest of the intersection. “That massive redevelopment project never got off the ground,” Scales says. “At this point it might take more money to remove the stoplight than leave it in.”

  • What a pity they don't add to the light heading west when exiting the mall at Canal and Roosevelt, where Whole Foods is. The light has space for a left turn, but no left turn signal. Then again, on Canal heading south the light at Roosevelt only is timed for 3 cars tops--which also makes NO sense. And causes gridlock daily.

  • Steven Vance Urban planner

A close succession of signals, not a single signal, in addition to a high volume of traffic, can cause gridlock when they aren't timed in concert. This may be the case at Roosevelt and Canal because of the nearby lights at Clinton, Jefferson, and Desplaines.

All four directions at Roosevelt and Canal have left-turn signals. If something has changed in the month or two since I've been through here, I'll have to check out what you're describing.

Working Bikes has a million and one bikes to choose from

I met a friend in Pilsen Wednesday to have lunch and then visit Working Bikes Cooperative (2434 S Western Avenue), a non-profit organization that repairs bicycles to sell to Chicagoans and also to send to people in Africa, Cuba, Guatemala, Peru and even the Gulf Coast. Volunteers and some paid staff take in donated bikes – from individuals, from collection drives, and even from the Chicago Department of Transportation’s own abandoned bicycle pickup program – organize, repair, and then sell or ship them. I asked manager Raul Gonzalez for a quick tour. I came in knowing the warehouse held a lot of bicycles, but I couldn’t imagine how many.

(You can donate your bike as well.)
