Hostility at Mandrake Park

My husband decided to take our 4 yr daughter to Mandrake Park yesterday morning and was horrified when a woman sitting there called him a "MFxxxx" in front of our daughter for no reason at all. He was shocked and asked her if she was talking to him and she replied, "Yes Im talking to you MF, all you people think you can come here from the North side and get rid of us? Well we aint going no where." He didn't leave immediatly but eased out of there shortly thereafter for the safety of our daughter. I am appalled that we paid money to OWN a home in the area and these people, feel entitled to MY neighborhood.

The polticans are apart of the problem. They concentrate public housing in black areas ensuring decreased low poperty values that leads to few amenities, crime, and a lower quality of life. They make it hard to establish a vibrant stable middle class area. They impede progress so they have have underclass voting block that will gurranty their perpetual re-election.

  • Where is everyone at, this is an important subject.

Hello,

I was made aware of the Bronzeville Job Fair that will be taking place tomorrow through EveryBlock and I was wondering if anyone would be able to provide more information on it. I know the time and location, but there was no information regarding the recruiting representatives. I would very much like to research the companies before I attend the job fair, so any information would be greatly appreciated.

More generally, does anyone know of any available positions in the Bronzeville area at all? As I recently started a non-profit here (See: http://chicago.everyblock.com/announcements/apr24-music-non-profit-organization-bronzeville-4925657/), I would really like to stay in the area, but with the job market being as it is, I am forced to look outside of the Bronzeville area, as well. To be honest, I am not above any type of work, so long as it is able to sufficiently provide enough income to survive. So, if anyone knows of anyone hiring - for anything - in the area, I would really appreciate some direction.

Thank you!

Thank you Phaedra -- I actually did contact the Mid-South Workforce Center earlier and they said that they couldn't release the info on which companies will be represented (not quite sure why), but that we would be informed when we arrive.

Thanks for the IIT tip, I'll have to keep my eye on it!

  • I know that Urban Partnership Bank has been doing some hiring. They have branches at 35th & Cottage and 47th & Cottage. What type of work are you trying to obtain?

The popcorn shop 122 E. 35th near Mom lou''s has opened and closed. The business closed over 9 months ago. They had great popcorn. There is another new business opening very shortly.
    Shalom

  • Honestly, I'll take a popcorn shop over another liquore store, beauty supply or conveince/phone shop.

I think the popcorn shop folks are hoping to cash in on people leaving US Cellular and/or going to the new harbor.

Music Non-profit Organization in Bronzeville

Hello,

I am looking to start/am in the process of starting a new non-profit organization that will, to begin with, be focused on the Bronzeville area. The organization will, in short, aim to restore the musical culture that was once quite prevalent in the area. The organization, called "Project: Experience Music", will predominantly focus on providing free music lessons to the youth of the area, as well as establishing a venue which will serve to create musical interest and attract other artists to the area.

I was wondering how the people of the community feel about this endeavor, as this organization will greatly depend on the support of the community's members. Do you have any suggestions? Thoughts? Ways in which we can further reach-out to the community? Any input would be greatly appreciated!

    Hello Gabrielle,

This definitely sounds like an interesting project and I would love to meet with you! Would you be able to e-mail me maybe a little more detail (you can find my e-mail address on my profile)?

  • I love this idea! In terms of children willing to participate I don't believe you'll have any shortage here in Bronzeville. I've been seaching for a place south of Cermak to sign my niece and nephew up for music lessons.

My boyfriend and I stopped by Swagger last night after driving past it and seeing its lights on. Can I say that this place has ALL of the bells and whistles of a top of the line lounge. My boyfriend and I stopped by Swagger last night after driving past it and seeing its lights on. Can I say that this place has ALL of the bells and whistles of a top of the line lounge. I don't even think my description would do the place justice! But it has a full service kitchen, a bar both upstairs and on the first floor, two outdoor padded seating areas with colorful lighting, an outdoor stage for performances, an outdoor fountain, a TON of flat screen tvs, dining area, a room for jazz performances, a Playstation section, beautifully decorated his and hers restrooms on both floors, lounge rooms on both floors, plenty of security on hand, and a friendly, accomodating wait staff. We met with Kara and she gaves the complete tour. I have been screaming about solid businesses and nightlife coming to Bronzeville for a while and Swagger has surely helped to fill the gap. They are currently open on Thursdays through Sundays and stay open as late as 2AM. As the word gets out, they plan to add more days to be open during the week. The menu consists mostly of bar food, and the menu is light, but it's still a great selection and the lounge plans to expand the options as popularity grows. Oh, and there is also plenty of free parking, so that is always a plus! OH...what a breath of fresh air for Bronzeville and the south side of Chicago! Please support this business soon!

I am going to check out Swagger. It's nice not to travel to the South Loop (LOL) or Rush Street to get drinks. For H, the reason why it showed up in the South Loop stream is because the address is in the 3rd ward and that ward has an appendage that reaches into the south loop. Instead of "cringing" at the mention on the club in your precious South Loop, why don't you try to support the establishment first. And since I am ranting right now, It is people like you that forced the closure of Some Like it Black, a joint to hear poetry and All Jokes Aside. Those types of establishments weren't wanted in the South Loop. Wonder why????!!!!!

  • I love when business begin to boom in our neighborhoods. I will have to check this spot out, thanks Erica.
