Looking for a new vet

I'm looking for a new vet that is mature and has 'seen it all' and who has longevity with the practice. And of course, he or she needs to have excellent doggy bedside manner.

I have an 11 year old fairly healthy black lab (for her age). I've been taking her to Higgins Animal Clinic on Belmont for four years. Good-hearted people with a lot of knowledge. I just don't agree with their approach of "this could be a symptom...

I have an 11 year old fairly healthy black lab (for her age). I've been taking her to Higgins Animal Clinic on Belmont for four years. Good-hearted people with a lot of knowledge. I just don't agree with their approach of "this could be a symptom of 6 different things, let's test for all of them" versus, there is a 90% change this symptom is X, so let's start there. If I had unlimited funds, I'd be okay with their approach, but it's hard to get out of their office under $500.

I live in East Lakeview but have a car and am willing to drive a little to find someone experienced and more practical.

  • Here's another vote for Pets First on Broadway and Roscoe. Dr. C and Dr. Mitchell know their stuff and don't push unnecessary tests. I have an old dog and a new puppy, so I am there a lot. I never feel like I'm being overcharged. And both have great bedside manner.

I've been going to Blum for several years (take our cats and dog). The vet I used moved out to the suburbs and no longer practices so about a year ago a lady I randomly ran into in their parking lot highly recommended Dr. Julia Georgesen at Blum (going through many issues w/ her dog she said this doctor was wonderful along w/ great bedside manor, etc.). So I've been taking our 2 cats and dog to her ever since and I highly recommend her as well. She has dogs and cats of her own, loves animals, great bedside manor, explains things very well, starts w/ the "process of elimination" when there are issues w/ your pet (testing, etc.) and is very easy to talk to. She performed surgery on our dog last year having to remove a large growth from her side (I was very nervous) and everything went very smooth and our dog did just fine. She always calls you at home to give you updates on test results, lets you know how your dog/cat is doing post-surgery, etc. And only using 1 other vet years ago before switching to Blum, not sure how much they "overcharge" but seems to me many vets are expensive. Hope this helps.
