What Do You Think?

Saw this on You Tube. If you do not think that there is gang activity in our neighborhood please watch this. I think it shows that gangs do affect our neighborhood.

A picture is worth 1000 words. If I see a picture of a group of cars WITH funeral stickers on them, I would well assume that group of cars are going to a cemetery. The picture swayed my mind. I didn't NEED anybody to sway my mind.I know what I saw. You saw someything different. That IS what life is all about-differences. I don't care what color the ducks feathers are, if they are on the duck, IT'S STILL A DUCK. My mind would be swayed if someone tried to tell me it's a canary and I believed it. Is Tupac, Biggie and Elvis still living?

Beverly transplant

Add Little Tikes toys and turn on the blow torch

Neighbors, do you really think that plastic lawn chairs, no matter how artfully arranged, improve the look of your front yard?

  • Libby Booker Beverly transplant

Sure, chairs are for sitting, but some homeowners, mostly west of Western, mistakenly consider them lawn decor. You'll recognize them. . .placed with care in the middle of the lawn, gently angled toward each other, as if waiting for the lord and lady of the manner to alight. . . all the while screaming "We decorate with plastic and we don't care who knows it."

    I meant "manor."

95th street businesses

How as a community, do we bring life back to the many empty shop fronts and stores on 95th street?

I grew up here and my treks up and down 95th St. were almost exclusively used to get either to the Evergreen Plaza or the Beverly Theater. I can't recall any marketing brainstorm that would have filled the shops on that beautiful boulevard but I know I considered it to be a shopping area for the well-off. There were giant display windows, one after the other, of glamorous, floor-length fur coats, evening gowns and sparkling bags and shoes. Art galleries with oil paintings displayed on shiny brass easels and flower shops. I have only one distinct memory of entering a store on 95th St (between Ashland and Western) with my mother on a shopping trip. We went to a lamp shop on 95th and Winchester that seemed small from outside but inside had any kind of lamp you could imagine and hundreds of them everywhere. Specialty shops are a destination and we could use more of them. I'm surprised there are not a few specialty shops relative to city workers there since we are the World Capital of City Workers. Uniform shops, collectible gifts, embroidery, Union Halls or clubs, were a few of what I was thinking. Hair salons do well anywhere because they are destination shops. Parking is inconsequential if your specialty is special enough.

  • snail admirer Its the little things that matter...

Diana, I grew up around 79th St (Sabina) and remember thinking that the shops on 95th street were too intimidating to enter! MIngea's and The Lind Shop? WOW - they were like MIchigan Ave to us.
All the Sabina people moved to Orland but we moved to 97th and Vanderpoel but had to move from there when the crime picked up.
I guess we should have gone to Orland, too.

Gang in Mt. Greenwood Park
Det Bill Brogan is warning all those living in the Mt. Greenwood area: Latin Saint gang members from 45th and Wood were hanging around Mt. Greenwood Park yesterday after their court case at Br 35. (20 of them were arrested in St Casmir last month at a memorial - Mac 11 and pistol recovered) Yesterday, they claimed to be enjoying a nice day in a safe park. 022 did a great job and dispersed them but the word is they may have been recruiting for a Mt. Greenwood section. Please report any suspicious people looking in cars, throwing gang signs etc. The Latin Saints wear baby blue clothing ( North Carolina jerseys, etc) and have Hispanic, black and white members. They'll only get it if you let them take it. Again, please call 911. Feel free to repost.

  • After many years in law enforcement I feel perfectly safe in stating that if thugs from 45th and Wood are coming all the way to 111th and Central Park to relax after court they are doing so at the bequest of a female from this neighborhood. She likes him enough to hang w/him in a safe park but not at 45th and Wood.

I agree. I use to do the same thing.i.e. travel cross town just to see a girl that I liked. All CTA and through "enemy territory". It was love.

Can someone give me some insight about the 9300 block of Laflin? Is it a good area to purchase property?

Loading loading

  • Hey scoopie you should pull up the stats,95th to 103rd Racine to Vincennes is like tellin someone to move to Iraq!! That whole neighborhood with the exception of Beverly blvd which is 9500 s ashland and south on that street and one block east of Vincennes is not any place to be day afternoon or evening.

  • Scoopie Concerned citizen of Winston Ave

My mistake. You are mostly correct. I meant 95th. to 99th from Loomis WEST to Beverly Ave and beyond. 99th to 103rd. and Winston can be rough 99th to 95th and Winston pretty nice.
