Add Little Tikes toys and turn on the blow torch

Neighbors, do you really think that plastic lawn chairs, no matter how artfully arranged, improve the look of your front yard?

Sure, chairs are for sitting, but some homeowners, mostly west of Western, mistakenly consider them lawn decor. You'll recognize them. . .placed with care in the middle of the lawn, gently angled toward each other, as if waiting for the lord and lady of the manner to alight. . . all the while screaming "We decorate with plastic and we don't care who knows it."

Gang Activity, in our backyard.

Gang in Mt. Greenwood Park
Det Bill Brogan is warning all those living in the Mt. Greenwood area: Latin Saint gang members from 45th and Wood were hanging around Mt. Greenwood Park yesterday after their court case at Br 35. (20 of them were arrested in St Casmir last month at a memorial - Mac 11 and pistol recovered) Yesterday, they claimed to be enjoying a nice day in a safe park. 022 did a great job and dispersed them but the word is they may have been recruiting for a Mt. Greenwood section. Please report any suspicious people looking in cars, throwing gang signs etc. The Latin Saints wear baby blue clothing ( North Carolina jerseys, etc) and have Hispanic, black and white members. They'll only get it if you let them take it. Again, please call 911. Feel free to repost.

  • After many years in law enforcement I feel perfectly safe in stating that if thugs from 45th and Wood are coming all the way to 111th and Central Park to relax after court they are doing so at the bequest of a female from this neighborhood. She likes him enough to hang w/him in a safe park but not at 45th and Wood.

I agree. I use to do the same thing.i.e. travel cross town just to see a girl that I liked. All CTA and through "enemy territory". It was love.

Family Care Giver is seeking financial assistance

My brother has brain cancer. He was diagnosed with stage IV glioblastoma in 2009. He has outlived his prognosis by 2 1/2 years. Two weeks ago his M.R.I. showed that he has developed his second tumor since the original one. He is single, permanently disabled and a home owner. The original tumor caused vision damage that makes driving an auto no longer possible. I am his means of transportation. I take him to doctor visits, grocery shopping, etc. The problem I am having is that my bills are not being paid on time, because I am not working. I am married with a husband that works, but that is not enough for us to survive. I have been told by numerous people that I am eligible for financial assistance for being a care giver. I went to the Social Security office and was told that the Government did not have any programs that offered assistance to care givers. I searched the web for State & County programs. I did not find what I was looking for. I know someone out there has the info I'm looking for. Please take the time to share it with me.

  • Someone a while back pointed out the American Cancer Society is a good resource for information...Also, you may want to contact the St Vincent De Paul Society at your closest local parish. (You dont need to be a Catholic) They have members who will take your brother to appointments, shopping or provide companionship and give you a respite at no cost..Take care of yourself too, caregiving is very stressful...Good Luck

  • Thanks to all three of you that responded as of today. Elizabeth I hope to obtain more info from you via email.

Speed Cameras

Does each individual ward receive the funds generated that the cameras are in? Will said cameras that are being put up and funds squeezed from tax payers actually go "to the children"? Who controls how the funds generated are spent? Which bank holds the funds and who on what Boards/Committees or campaign contributors has an interest in said bank? Who gets the contracts for the cameras, installation and monitoring?

  • It's not an extravagance to get a pension for working a job. It IS an extravagance for getting a pension for the one day 'job' in CPS, or the one month 'job' as a staffer for Burke.....

Sad goodbye to Cafe 103

Don't know any of the details, but am sorry to see one of the few nice restaurants in Beverly close. Seems we're doomed to be a epicurian backwater.

Sad to lose Beverly Pantry too. It's unfortunate but I think it's very hard to be an upscale restaurant in an area where there aren't a lot of other "date night" type destinations nearby, and way off the convenient transit hubs too. (You can't really rely on the Rock Island for a late night out.) The BAC does some nice things sometimes, but for a lot of people if they're going out to a nice restaurant they're going to a movie/play/concert/museum/something to make a night of it, and for us that usually means going North where those things tend to be. We don't even have a movie theater since the one at Evergreen Plaza closed 12+ years ago, so it's a drive out to Crestwood or Chatham or farther just to catch a movie.

Speak now or forever hold your speed

Ald. O'Shea indicated he had requested changes in the Mayor's proposed red light blitz. I encourage everyone to contact him immediately and tell him to vote NO on this law in any form! An end to these oppressive fines and laws!

At the same time, thank him for the support he has given local parents who believe that children should not be asked to attend an "adult-sized" 7.5 school day. We, not the Rahmfather, need to decide what is best for our children

O'Shea misguided in Ward priorities

When asked for an update on efforts to prevent a recurrece of the flooding that besieged the community last spring, Ald. Matt O'Shea was unable to answer. After a very long pause in Thursday's town hall meeting he looked to a panelist from the sewer dept for help (1/2 mile of new sewers, 1 1/2 miles of relined sewers, extensive cleaning out of sewers and diverters in drain.) For the record, O'Shea was equipped with all the details on the house tour, garden walk, shredding day, Memorial Day parade and the BAPA "daily deals." Priority wake up call, please!

The Evergreen Golf Course Developer recently submitted a request to the MWRD for an approval to tie in the runoff water, from the displaced water from the proposed Meijer/Menards big box development at 91st & Western, to be directly linked into the existing Chicago sewer system. This request was rejected by MWRD.
Even though the water won’t be directly linked into Chicago’s sewer system, the water WILL be routed through Chicago’s sewer, via Evergreen Park’s existing sewer system and into Chicago’s sewer system in Mt. Greenwood and eventually in the “Deep Tunnel”. http://articles.chicagotribune.com/2011-04-21/news/ct-met-deep-tunnel-climate-change-20110420_1_climate-change-sewers-deep-tunnel-project
The proposed development detention pond on the east side of the B & O railroad tracks will now be connected (under the railroad tracks) to another newly acquired detention pond, land that was given back to the developer from the Village of EP in a real estate exchange agreement 3/12/2012 (Ordinance NO. 5-2012), located on the west side of the B & O railroad tracks. The eastern detention pond will be routed to the western detention pond, which will be released “when appropriate”.
When a significant amount of rain falls, especially during a short period of time, the water cannot always be “released” due to the fact that water flow through the sewers is at capacity. The water flow through the sewers during large rainfall acts as essentially a hydro plug for any additional water that is introduced to the sewer system. A detention system cannot always drain, and in this particular case the water could crest over the detention ponds and cascade down over the newly acquired Evergreen Park Recreation Area and in the basements of homes around the area of 91st & California. Mt. Greenwood, in Chicago, would specifically face a similar dilemma, due to the fact that the additional water will contribute to their already overtaxed sewer system that was experienced last year.

    - Infrastructure work will be done to prevent flooding
The EP Mayor noted that water from the development will be contained in retention ponds and released when appropriate.
