Ran across this story on line. But it is a question for not only Englewood but most of our communities. Like I previously stated on last week, we have kids on our block that are under 5 yo playing up and down the street without supervision.
Some years back I recall DCFS stepping into families telling the parents that they were not permitted to phyically discipline (some kids need it) their children and in a few instances parents were arrested for doing so, also parents were told they could not invade a childs privacy (their bedroom in your house).
Parental guidance is a must for all children, there are parents/guardians in some cases that refuse to see the wrong and turn a biind eye to the kids hanging out. "my son is a good boy, he goes to school everyday", but is he a student at the school is actually attending classes or is he just hanging out.
Last summer when we had a incident in my community that resulted in a shooting death, one parent said "my son is going away to college, so you all can stop blaming my house for alot of the crime around here".
Now don't get me wrong I was so happy to hear that he was going off to school if he had needed a ride I would have taken him there myself, but unless the son is an Einstein, completed a 4yr university in 4 months he is still hanging out, business as usual.
What type of parent are you when you socialize and hang out in the club with your children and their friends?
I don't do "it takes a village to raise a child". I am not the parent to your kids you had them you raise them, I don't need the village because there may be a child molester in the village.
"I want to be friends with my kids", NO, I am the parent keep it real we will not party and hangout together, I think respect is lost when you remove the parent bar and lower it to the friend bar.

You both are putting the cart befors the horse. With the amount of child abuse these days I find it appalling that parents who seems to be as smart as some of the peoples who post here often would even criticize the DCFS for doing their jobs. Flower, you just posted the other day about children who play on the street and the need for someone to do the parents jobs.. This is where DCFS comes in. If you see that the parents aren't doing their"jobs", then it is time to call them.

  • @Duke, not that some families don't need DCFS to step in especially where the child is in danger, not just lay down guidelines for the general public. Unless there is a need for guidance from DCFS for a family, a parent's should be permitted to discipline their children and conduct random searches of their bedrooms when and if they want to.

Don"t get it twisted

I was going into a CVS store (79th Western) last week, this guy was asking for money well after no one gave him any he told another beggar, "they would feel hurt if I just snatched a purse". I thought to myself "don't let this pretty face fool you". Walgreens and CVS need to stop these people from standing on the property begging.

  • Another reason we need to have the right for concealed carry, to protect ourselves from scum like this.

The crooks know that law abiding citizens cannot carry a weapon.
Their approach to crime would change if they had to guess who was packing and who was not.

For the last 2 days my door bell has rang and each time it's one of the kids on my block, he has to be about 2 years old. He is outside with his older brother who is somewhat impaired. I have advised them to go home (I live in the middle of the block they live 2 houses off the corner). It bothers me because on today the toddler is pointing to my neighbors dog who is in the yard and barking. I told him to go home and not to go near the gate where the dog is because if he sticks his hand through the fence he is going to get bitten.
Why don't people watch their kids when they are outside, in my opinion these kids are walking post kids for a child molester.
When my children were young, I supervised them. I too have a child that is impaired. I have been living in my home 15yo and no one on my block can ever say they have seen my son outside unsupervised. And now that he is older he likes to sit on the deck so I have a camera's that monitor my yard.

People are having kids like its going out of style...Everywhere you look theres parents with like 6 kids.Thats not a problem the problem is learn to be responable for alll of your kids..Parents go and have more and more kids and what happens is that the older kids that are still kids end up raising there lil siblings..It becomes a chain these kids will have kids and the same will happen.. My mom is a teacher and she tells me alll the time its soso hard dealing with the parents..Lil kids look neglected and you could tell theres no help for lil onces at home..Then the trouble makers its hard no obedience at home let alone at school..I'm not a parent i'm only 24 years old i understand its hard to juggle a home, kids, bill, dinner,go stores ecta but if what you need is sometime to do alll this and more hire someone a babysitter to take you kids to the nearest park, zoo, somewhere to let some energy off..These kids are full of energy thats alll they need is to let it out runnn and scream..lol dont we need that as adults sometimes to just be let out of our cages..I'm sure someone will babysit for $5 and hour or so or parents with parents ex: i'll watch your kids take them with my kids to park this weekend and the another parent takes them the following weekend or weekday..Work together.. =)

Hiring

What is the point of applying if you guys are going to hire your buddies and/family members anyways. Construction hiring is so rigged anyways. I'm a more than qualified union carpenter apprentice that has been looking for full time construction work without any positive results. I live a few block away from Durkin and my kids attend that school.

  • The mayor will back down on this "crackdown". The Wine & Spirit Wholesalers of Illinois(WSWA-IL) were large contributors to the mayor's campaign collectively and individually( Wirtz, Stoller, Southern, etc). They vowed they would not take the beating they took under the Daley administration. Stores out of control will get closed but those on the bubble will be able to come up with a security plan that will be acceptable to the city.

Further south at 95th. and Ashland, you will have to pay your street tax to several "collectors". I don't see how the Alderman, local police patrols and the store owners don't clear them out. I SWEAR they are there from the opening bell till closing. I commend the store at 95th. and Bishop. They keep the tax collectors off of that parking lot. And they donate to block organizations.

I too am concerned about the environment!

I understand that the Blue cart program is expanding this spring but the areas for expansion don't seem to include any parts of the 18th Ward (I know that some parts of the ward previously received blue carts). Does anyone have any additional information?

  • I have been saying this from the start. The Mayor does Not care what we Are Going through. He could Care less. If he can pay individuals from a Halfway house to protest clinic patrons trying to keep clinics open, he will not hesitate to destroy neighborhoods. He has NOTHING TO LOSE!

  • Update: Mayor Rahm Emanuel today said the remaining 340,000 Chicago households that don’t have curbside recycling will get it by the end of 2013.

Mr. Mayor, please don't pass the collection plate!

With the city woes of financial hardship, I hope that we don't get stuck with the renovation cost of Wrigley field. The Ricketts have millions perhaps billions of dollars let them foot the cost of any and all improvements. Will there be free admission to the games for residents of Chicago.

There is a multi unit unoccupied building at 80st Ashland and a inhabitable single family home on 81st Winchester please find money to either rehab the structures or demolish them.

Let the suburbanites and the northsiders pay for the improvements through ticket prices!! The x- ways are jammed with people from the north and western suburbs going to see the Cubs. We could introduce a highway tax on game days to subsidize renovation. Ald. Brookins, do not vote for this "rob the poor to give to the rich" scheme.

Director of Community Management

Friday fun: How would you give back to your neighborhood if you won tonight's Mega Millions drawing?

If you've been reading the news lately, you've probably heard something about tonight's jackpot drawing that has got a lot of folks dreaming big.

So I thought it would be fun to ask how you would give back to your neighborhood if you were the lucky winner?

  • I would really give back to the community by creating a doggie park that I have been wanting to create for so long. The South West Side is in need of an area just like the North Side so that we can have facilities for our pets. I think that too many times we have been neglected and I am currently speaking to a "certain influential person" to see. But WHEN I WIN, we will not have to wait so long! Can't wait.

  • I believe in the famous quote by Laing Hancock:
"The best way to help the poor is not to become one of them"

I would do like George and Wheezy and "Move on Up" to the Eastside !

Pro or Con: Police Observation Devices

In my community we once had a discussion regarding the Police Observation Devices (PODs), as always some pro's and con's. One of the major con's was the negative effect on property value, I was one of those people. But in the wake of violence since the warm weather has arrived, I am reconsidering my opinion on the PODs. But then as I think about it Who is monitoring the POD's that are already installed, apparently no one. According to the...

According to the CPD they currently don't have the man power to have paid staff monitor the PODs so my question is "What do you think about PODs? Does your community currently have a POD? Since the CPD in under staffed would you consider volunteering for a community POD watch?

  • The only way those cameras fight crime is if they are monitored by someone 24/7 who can dispatch law enforcement on a moment's notice. Otherwise all you have is a nice video keepsake of your mugging. And the quality is not terrific, either. And who will screen the Pod Watchers? I agree with Eddie, the only way to keep a neighborhood intact an maintain property values is for neighbors to stand up and take an interest.

  • Eddie M LeCroix/Chicago ADT Security Account Rep.

A visible presence of the neighbors will let the criminals and vandals know that there is no tolerance for that in the community. Unity is strength and division will be a downfall.

City to start charging $25 for seats at Taste of Chicago concerts

Wow, is there anything that we as tax paying residence in the Chicago can get for our tax dollars, no entertainment and no police protection. Perhaps I would feel different if I saw my tax dollars being used for something, like community improvement, increase in police for problem areas but NOTHING.
