Police activity W Carmen @ Clark night of 5/24?

Came home from a trip last night to find several police cars and a small crowd of neighbors etc on the street near my building. Activity seemed to be focused on the building across from me (1470 W Carmen). Lots of scurrying around by police and others. Anybody know what was up?

Zenith Company Began As Literal Radio Shack Next To Edgewater Beach Hotel

Some of its creations are now on display from 1-4 p.m. weekends at the Edgewater Historical Society, 5358 N. Ashland Ave., until April.

This article has 3 other Chicago locations (Show)

The pair of friends were former Navy men stationed at Lakes Naval Training Station who, after World War I, formed the Chicago Radio Laboratory out of Matthews' Uptown apartment kitchen at 1316 W. Carmen Ave.

Later that year, Chicago Radio Lab expanded into a small shack at 5525 N. Sheridan Road, property owned by the glamorous up-and-coming hotel.

After only two years, Chicago Radio Lab had outgrown its lakefront garage and moved west to a 3,000-square-foot factory and office building at 6433 N. Ravenswood Ave., which remains today as the Chicago Industrial Arts & Design Center.

Zenith Company Began As Literal Radio Shack Next To Edgewater Beach Hotel
EDGEWATER - Before Steve Jobs made working out of your garage cool, Ralph H.G. Matthews and Karl Hassel had already made history by helping to transmit the first transcontinental radio message out of a two-car garage on the grounds of the former Edgewater Beach Hotel.

That's partially true - the CTU in the past agreed to bad ideas like the pension pickup but the core problems with the CPS pension are the pension holidays the city took and inequitable funding at state level.

As everyone knows if you fail to fund your pension one year you are losing decades of investment returns, not just that one year's contribution. This problem was created over decades, the good news is action can be taken now and it can be fixed.

The unhealthy coziness between the CTU and politicians ended definitively years ago, The group that was elected to CTU leadership in 2010 is doing a much better job and it's benefitting the schools and the city.

Bike Lane Going In on Glenwood

Yep, the long "awaited" bike lane adding to Rahm Emmanuels 250 miles of bike lanes is finally going in.

Why I know it's bad in it's current location:

- Drivers pulling out are obstructed from seeing oncoming cyclists. Cyclists will have an entitlement now to the lane and cars pulling out are not going to see a fast moving cyclist until the last minute

- Glenwood floods completely 1/3 of the times it rains (ie; unusable)

Yep, the long "awaited" bike lane adding to Rahm Emmanuels 250 miles of bike lanes is finally going in.

Why I know it's bad in it's current location:

- Drivers pulling out are obstructed from seeing oncoming cyclists. Cyclists will have an entitlement now to the lane and cars pulling out are not going to see a fast moving cyclist until the last minute

- Glenwood floods completely 1/3 of the times it rains (ie; unusable)

- Winter snow plows plow the snow into the bike lanes. (ie; unusable)

- Cars turn illegally against Glenwood all the time. This will not help curb that with bikes going that direction. Almost always visitors to the area, not residents and that's what Andersonville prides itself on.

- Statistics were never presented, even when asked

- Glenwood is a high traffic street as it's a major thoroughfare unlike other streets. More cars and more bike "entitlements" do not mix well.

- Parking is already a premium as more restaurants brings more workers. Those workers park all up and down side streets and Glenwood.

- Expect a police car sitting on Glenwood waiting to ticket just as they do during street sweeping days. Yes, they do sit and wait on the end of the block. I like walking by and reading the tickets they give to see what time they do. Typically 9:01am.

- Police same people that say the placement of it on the road is a bad idea and expect more issues.

Oh well, I know where my campaign contributions are going.

I'm curious what kind of insurance you think cyclists might need? Or why you would want to wait in line at the DMV behind 8 year olds getting their bike license?

I wonder if they have bicycle licensing in Scandanavian cities where they are the primary mode of transportation? I think it would be a good idea just so cyclists could all learn proper rules of the road. And at the same time we drivers should have to learn them too. It's amazing what one forgets 30+ yrs after high school drivers ed. I'm all for anything that keeps people safe. Share the road!

  • Peirce Elementary Intl Studies School reviewed

My daughter loves her kindergarten teacher (Ms. Fabs) and is very engaged and excited by school. Spring Break was a drag--she couldn't wait to get back to school. The school holds many events that help get families involved and has significant support from both households and businesses in the neighborhood. Also, teachers and school are quick to respond to questions and concerns. Finally, I'm excited to see how the IB curriculum expands in future years- love the philosophy of the IB Learner Profile.

We have had an excellent experience at Peirce Elementary School! Some things that have not recently been highlighted: -the current administration is extremely responsive and helpful -the school is now an IB school from pre-k through eighth grade -there are awesome art partnerships at all grades -there is strong parent involvement -Peirce is very rooted in the community and has many local partners -students have a wide array of after-school options We love being Peirce Panthers!

We moved to this neighborhood to be able to send our children to Peirce. We considered sending them to a private school, but I wanted them to experience more diversity than they would find in an a private school. Even though the majority of students qualify for free lunches, the school itself provides an excellent education. I have a first grader there now, and I helped tutor my neighbor's daughter when she was in fifth grade. The teachers are skilled and kind, the parents are organized and enthusiastic, and the administration is wonderful at keeping everyone informed. They have special events such as the "Move-a-thon", which was called a walk a thon until they realized not all the students could walk. I love that they came up with a creative solution that was inclusive and fun. I met some amazing parents at the playground during after school pick up, and I can't imagine sending my children anywhere else. I come from a long line of college graduates, and I firmly believe Peirce is giving my children the foundation to continue that legacy.

What are Renters Looking for?

Just curious - is a dishwasher in a unit a "must have" in Chicago? I rented for a long while before I bought and never had a dishwasher - or even an in unit washer/dryer. Are these the new normal? Rents are high in the neighborhood and a realtor told me that they couldn't get a grey stone vintage rented in Andersonville until they put in quartz (seems granite is passe) and stainless appliances.

heck where I live I dont even have that! I still have my laminate counter top and white on white kitchen from the 90's and it is coming back - so not changing anything for 20 years makes me "in" for a hot minute again...

oh and someone mentioned central air not window units

Just curious

I will admit my head exploded when I read on CL that someone was trying to rent apts for $2,500 here...

RE the dishwasher: It's just me, so I find I keep up with the dishes better when I wash them twice a day as needed. I have a dishwasher, but when I used to wait til it filled, and then try to get around to emptying it, too many dishes were involved and so I would let it slide. It's easier just to wash the few I need.

The dishwasher is nice when I have company though. Although last time I had company, it had been so long since I used it, it seemed the dishwasher water supply had clogged up and didn't work so well. So maybe I should use it more often. After I get it fixed. Which will be when?

I'm just responding to the question in the thread title, "What are renters looking for?"

    Good neighbors in the building.

It can be the greatest neighborhood, or the unit can have all the nifty features I'm interested in, but if my immediate neighbors are inconsiderate - especially regarding noise issues - I'm probably going to be miserable.
