Insulator Reco's

Hi there...just finished my move to Albany Park and am going through my 'Honey Do' list from the home inspector. Is there a reliable insulator company that anyone knows about that they have used? I hope to not cause too much damage to my walls, so any and all information about regular insulation or foam insulation would be helpful as well to know options that I have.

Any suggestions for a security system?

We just moved into an apartment first floor and are looking into security systems. Any recommendations? Would love to hear from personal experience!

  • ward greenleaf Smokey and the Bandit, Hooper, Cannonball Run...

I prefer cameras. You can get good systems on amazon for under $500

  • We use simplisafe. It is super easy. Instead of a high monthly bill-you buy the kit. You install it yourself with 3m strips. Then when you move you just take the sensors down and take it with you. Then the monthly cost for the monitoring is only 14.99. I have it at home and the office. It monitors over cellular data and uses batteries. simplisafe.com

Missing lawn signs

We had a Hate Has No Home Here sign in front of our house since November. Today I noticed it missing. I've seen several other signs (HHNHH and similar) the area. Has anyone else had theirs go missing? I'm sure it's just some random jerk, but wanted to check.

  • Neighbor Bob Life long Chicagoan, Forest Glen resident since 19

LauraLiz: Sorry to hear that. I've had Halloween decorations stolen and political signs destroyed, but our Hate Has No Home Here sign is still standing in our front yard.

  • Random jerks. I have American flags in the ground along my sidewalk and when I left for work yesterday, I noticed someone took a couple of them and stuck them in the ground upside down.

Assault on 4000 block st louis

Does anyone on here live on the 4000 block of St. Louis and know what happened last night? Maybe this carried over or started on your block? There was loud arguing between two men and a woman around 3am. One of the men was striking the woman as she screamed for help. Yes I called the police but not sure what happened after that.

Looking for a handyman/bathroom guy

We're in need of a handyman to work on some misc. projects around our house such as replacing a bathroom tile (are there any stores that sell single tiles?), regrouting our tub and shower floor and replacing a light switch. Does anyone spring to mind who can do this for a fair price?

Lawrence..Central Pk..

I know there are certain streets that deserve more caution along Lawrence Ave between Kimball and maybe up to Hamlin...I know the area has gotten more populated...and it just looks more heavily transited..but is this something new or has it always been "sketchy" someone said its b/c of more buildings taking sec 8...
which opens up alot of debate...
but without getting too political...would this area be recommended to move into?

Things are changing. Some of today's tags are just clueless kids playing O.G. Nothing to be taken too seriously. There might be some residual gang issues like in many other areas of Chicago that are going through transformations.
People have agendas (some of them are very obvious, others more subtle) and they see what fits their assumptions or personal agendas/beliefs and not the other way around.

I am not happy about the litter. A lot of it comes from illegal drinking. Some of it comes from the many schools in the area and unsupervised youngsters in some areas. Last but not least in some regions of the world unfortunately there is no recycling culture and people litter a lot. I'm not happy about it and I don't excuse it but people (some people, not all) from other regions see others trashing the streets and think it's okay because they don't know any better.

Hi, I've lived in the area for almost two years now (just North of Lawrence and centered halfway between Pulaski to the West and Kimball to the East). When I first moved to the neighborhood I was skeptical - much further West than I had anticipated moving. Was concerned about both gangs and crime but truthfully one of the few places to afford a single family home with yard on the north side of Chicago! I've been pleasantly surprised. There was a corner bar at Lawndale and Lawrence that got shut down (there was gang activity). The area is well patrolled and for the most part people take very good care of their properties. A few sketchy pockets just like everywhere else in the city. Haven't been afraid to walk at night coming from Kimball Brown Line train west down Lawrence but much like anywhere in the city you just need to be aware of your surroundings. With all the crime we hear in the news about 'safe neighborhoods' less serious crime being broadcast in the Albany Park area. Very diverse area both in terms of people, restuarants and shops. Also, there is a LOT of investment being made in the community - a lot of SF homes being bought and converted into nice properties. I've also seen several two unit buildings change ownership (post flip). Good to see in the community as people are making investment and beautifying properties. It's not yet an Andersonville / Edgewater or Logan Square but I think in time it will continue to substantially improve as a community. My two cents!

Neighborhood rating.

Hello everyone, I wanted to ask all of you about the neighborhood. I'm currently looking at an apartment near Pulaski and foster but I've heard from people I know that this is not the. Eat area to live in. For the people who actually do live around here how would you rate this area as far a safety and crime? Any feedback would be grately appreciate it! Thank you

(Springfield and foster streets)

I've lived near Foster and Pulaski(just SE of it) for over 35 years. I will tell you that the safety levels are really on a block by block basis. Blocks with nothing but apartment complexes, you can expect more gang bangers and crime in general. I would stick to blocks with a better mix of homes and apartments. Just 10-15 years ago, shootings were very infrequent in this area. That's changed quite a bit however. Gun shots are a weekly occurrence culminating in much more frequent in the summer months. Being close to the Brown line is nice, however having to walk towards Lawrence and Kimball to get there has always been dangerous, more so at night. I would generally say around Foster and Pulaski, staying N and NW of that intersection would be safest but probably limited in apartment buildings.

Introducing Myself

Good Neighbors!

I would like to introduce my wife and I to the neighborhood. We recently purchased a rehabbed multi family property in the area and are actively taking on the role of live-in landlords and (naive) property investors. Coming from the burbs has been a measurable change but we are excited to set our roots here in Albany Park. Thanks for your time.

Cheers,
PJ

I couldn't imagine playing music that loud and loud music hearts your hearing and your children's hearing. There was so much smoke you would think there was a fire.

Also at least have someone supervise or watch the children who are out in the alley too.

You took away my right to enjoy my home yesterday. I wouldn't do this to you.

Be considerate of your neighbors.

Thanks!!!!

A fellow DJ in Albany Park threw a Saturday BBQ/DJ dance party last summer BUT, it started at 4 pm, the speakers and dancing were in the garage so as to be less intrusive to the neighbors and he ended the music at 10 pm. We got to play music, we even had people walking down the alley stopping by to enjoy the music and the neighbors got a nice surprise when the music stopped well before 12 am. In my opinion, this is how good neighbors co-exist; keep your volume level set for everyone and not just for yourself.

Has anyone else run into the lady that hangs around the McDonald's on Kedzie and Wilson? Does anyone know what her story is?

I was standing outside of the McDonald's on Kedzie and Wilson just now smoking a cigarette, and the lady came up to to ask me for a cigarette. She has approached me several times before asking for cigarettes and I always give her one. Then she will always have very incoherent conversations with me. Most of the time, she'll mouth the words to an entire conversation without saying anything but I think she assumes I heard her, because she'll then ask me if I understand. I usually just nod along and say nothing.

Today she got very angry with me and made vague threats against me and was telling an imaginary third person to throw me in jail. I think she thinks she was being interviewed by the news because she was talking about a camera and a news helicopter.

I don't feel threatened because I'm certain she has no idea what she's saying, but I'm concerned because I feel like she has been very badly abused and traumatized. When I am able to catch pieces of her conversations, it sounds like she's remembering really horrible things that she's been through.

Has anyone else had any interaction with her? Does anyone know if there are any mental health agencies that could help her? She looks to be in her 50's or 60's, white woman with very chapped or windburned skin and a lot of missing teeth. I assume she's homeless because she's always wearing the same clothes and smells pretty bad. I see her fairly regularly, so I guess she may have some tie to the neighborhood.

  • Mental illness sucks and many people who are not familiar with it do not understand how it deeply affects individuals. Mental illness is one of the leading causes of homelessness, besides domestic abuse, addiction, etc. Also to note that just because someone has a drug and alcohol problem, does not always mean that they are dangerous. People who are living on the street just need extra attention instead of people in the community judging them due to social stigmas or ignoring them, so thanks for caring and asking for resources.

  • I'm not saying all homeless people with or without mental illness are substance abusers , but this Lady I have seen doing so.whether people take precaution is a choice, just don't cry about it if something happens.
