Neighborhood rating.

Hello everyone, I wanted to ask all of you about the neighborhood. I'm currently looking at an apartment near Pulaski and foster but I've heard from people I know that this is not the. Eat area to live in. For the people who actually do live around here how would you rate this area as far a safety and crime? Any feedback would be grately appreciate it! Thank you

I've lived near Foster and Pulaski(just SE of it) for over 35 years. I will tell you that the safety levels are really on a block by block basis. Blocks with nothing but apartment complexes, you can expect more gang bangers and crime in general. I would stick to blocks with a better mix of homes and apartments. Just 10-15 years ago, shootings were very infrequent in this area. That's changed quite a bit however. Gun shots are a weekly occurrence culminating in much more frequent in the summer months. Being close to the Brown line is nice, however having to walk towards Lawrence and Kimball to get there has always been dangerous, more so at night. I would generally say around Foster and Pulaski, staying N and NW of that intersection would be safest but probably limited in apartment buildings.

Introducing Myself

Good Neighbors!

I would like to introduce my wife and I to the neighborhood. We recently purchased a rehabbed multi family property in the area and are actively taking on the role of live-in landlords and (naive) property investors. Coming from the burbs has been a measurable change but we are excited to set our roots here in Albany Park. Thanks for your time.

Cheers,
PJ

Loud Music

Yesterday my family and me had bad headaches from an outdoor yard party with I think they had a live band that played for hours. You don't have to play music that loud and have the party spill out side to the alley. At least you could move the garbage cans back to where they were after it was over. I couldn't imagine playing music that loud and loud music hearts your hearing and your children's hearing. There was so much smoke you would think there was a fire.

Also at least have someone supervise or watch the children who are out in the alley too.

You took away my right to enjoy my home yesterday. I wouldn't do this to you.

Be considerate of your neighbors.

Thanks!!!!

  • Its amazing how many people think they should be blasting their music as they ride in their cars down residential streets.

A fellow DJ in Albany Park threw a Saturday BBQ/DJ dance party last summer BUT, it started at 4 pm, the speakers and dancing were in the garage so as to be less intrusive to the neighbors and he ended the music at 10 pm. We got to play music, we even had people walking down the alley stopping by to enjoy the music and the neighbors got a nice surprise when the music stopped well before 12 am. In my opinion, this is how good neighbors co-exist; keep your volume level set for everyone and not just for yourself.

Homeless woman around Kedzie and Wilson

Has anyone else run into the lady that hangs around the McDonald's on Kedzie and Wilson? Does anyone know what her story is?

I was standing outside of the McDonald's on Kedzie and Wilson just now smoking a cigarette, and the lady came up to to ask me for a cigarette. She has approached me several times before asking for cigarettes and I always give her one. Then she will always have very incoherent conversations with me. Most of the time, she'll mouth the words to an entire conversation without saying anything but I think she assumes I heard her, because she'll then ask me if I understand. I usually just nod along and say nothing.

Today she got very angry with me and made vague threats against me and was telling an imaginary third person to throw me in jail. I think she thinks she was being interviewed by the news because she was talking about a camera and a news helicopter.

I don't feel threatened because I'm certain she has no idea what she's saying, but I'm concerned because I feel like she has been very badly abused and traumatized. When I am able to catch pieces of her conversations, it sounds like she's remembering really horrible things that she's been through.

Has anyone else had any interaction with her? Does anyone know if there are any mental health agencies that could help her? She looks to be in her 50's or 60's, white woman with very chapped or windburned skin and a lot of missing teeth. I assume she's homeless because she's always wearing the same clothes and smells pretty bad. I see her fairly regularly, so I guess she may have some tie to the neighborhood.

  • Mental illness sucks and many people who are not familiar with it do not understand how it deeply affects individuals. Mental illness is one of the leading causes of homelessness, besides domestic abuse, addiction, etc. Also to note that just because someone has a drug and alcohol problem, does not always mean that they are dangerous. People who are living on the street just need extra attention instead of people in the community judging them due to social stigmas or ignoring them, so thanks for caring and asking for resources.

  • I'm not saying all homeless people with or without mental illness are substance abusers , but this Lady I have seen doing so.whether people take precaution is a choice, just don't cry about it if something happens.

Car alarm,again

A few days ago I posted about a loud car alarm on a car parked on Sunnyside between Kimball and Christiana. Long story short this loud alarm keeps going off in the early morning, and various times of the day. No one comes to shut it off! I have called the police, one morning last week when it went off at 4am and woke my husband and I.

Calling the police seems to do no good.

Either the car owner doesn't care this is happening and disturbing people or is just unaware. I really don't understand why you would have this alarm if you ignore it?? My next course of action is to leave a polite nice note on the car.

Any advice?

  • Ugh we hear it too but aren't sure what car it is. Can you provide a description- make and model? And we will call as well. Thanks

  • It is a Silver gray Hyundai sedan, don't think I can share plate number on EB.
This car has been doing this for over a year around Central Park.

Need someone to remove a non-working hot tub from the back yard

Is anyone willing to take it apart and dispose of it? It's disconnected from the electrical. I'll pay a fee. (It used to work but part of it stopped years ago.)

Shots fired last night

Last night we heard several shots fired near Ainsle and Pulaski. We turned on the scanner and several other neighbors from surrounding areas called it in too / between 7 and 12 shots. They dispatched but then I stopped hearing any updates. Does anyone know what happened and where?

  • Any updates? I heard them as well, I wasn't sure if they were firecrackers or gun shots. It sounded like it came from little Gomps.

  • Didn't hear. Following post. Did anyone reach out to commander Voulgaris of 17th district? I think his email address is elias.voulgaris@chicagopolice.org but that's a guess. Please email or call the 17th. I would but was not in town and didn't hear the possible shots fired. Thanks for posting.

Nobody said it was perfect, Mazak1. Nowhere is perfect. I've lived in many countries, some of them with great international reputations because of their impeccable educational and healthcare standards and I have to reiterate "nowhere in the world in perfect." Many times it's more about the parents than about the community as a whole. Responsible parents inculcate powerful life skills in their children so that they can succeed anywhere. I've seen that in Austrian parents and Northern African parents, in Swiss and German, Subsaharian and also in Mexican parents. It's not always the urban community. It's the parental commitment and strength that makes the family. Parents blaming schools or communities for their own kids shortcomings? THAT is the one new thing that makes me laugh out. Loud. After years traveling and witnessing resilent families succeed under circumstances that none of us can't even picture to begin with the excuses I get to hear these days are appalling.

Loud Car Alarm

There has been a loud car alarm (the horn type) going off since the early hours of this morning, and I was wondering what can be done about it. It's very loud, and no one has come to shut it off, it's been going for HOURS, and it's very difficult to conduct business over the phone/skype when this thing is blaring in my ear.

The grey car is located on the north side of Sunnyside between Kimball and Christiana just east of the alleyway.

Is this something to call into 311 with the car description and license plate and they can issue a citation or something?

Any advice is appreciated, thanks!

  • Jenn Albany Park since 2005

I ended up calling 911 and reporting it. It stopped shortly after that.

What is a car alarm supposed to do? How is it supposed to be effective? What is it supposed to cause to happen?

Parking near Jensen Park

Still looking for parking near Haugan Middle School.
Does anyone have any leads?

Thanks!

  • Yunalesca 1-year Albany Park resident

Unfortunately parking in this area is almost impossible after a certain time. Usually the spots near Jensen fill up rather quickly after 4pm.

  • Yes I know. Looking for a spot we'd pay for monthly.
