  • Helen, studies conducted down in Sarasota FL support your contention regarding food for the homeless. They indicated that somewhere around 85 to 90% of money given to panhandlers is spent on alcohol or drugs. Really want to help them? Give your money to the Salvation Army, it will be spent to truly help those in need.

I've worked as a psych tech in a mental hospital. I've worked with the Chicago Department of Family & Support Services with their Homeless Management Information System (HMIS), and I've worked with the Chicago Housing Authority. From my experiences, I can tell you that:

    A) More than 90% of the chronically homeless (meaning homeless for more than a day or two) are mentally ill.

    B) A very large majority of the non-schizophrenic mentally ill are addicted substance abusers, which prevents them from being allowed to stay in shelters.

    C) There are actually plenty of beds available in public + private shelters across the City. But in order to stay there, you have to be off drugs / alcohol. A large percentage of the homeless do not qualify for these shelters.

    D) Of the schizophrenic / psychotic homeless (characterized by delusions and irrational speech patterns), most are there because they stopped taking their meds after they were released from the hospital. Help must be forced upon these people, as they will (usually) not seek it out on their own.

    E) There is not nearly enough state and federal money set up to support victims of severe / acute mental illness. It sucks, but there's actually no place for lots of these people to stay.

Solutions? I call the cops on the homeless, and I never give them food or money. I want the cops to bring them to mental institutions (or jail them temporarily if necessary). And we absolutely must force our layers of government to provide increased funding for mental health.

Angelo's Wine Bar is Albany Park's neighborhood Italian gem
Angelo's Wine Bar in Albany Park is a true neighborhood gem. The food and cocktails are superb and the price points are reasonable. Angelo's provides a hip vibe, great food, and a relaxing casual atmosphere that is hard to beat anywhere else in the city.
    https://chicago.thelocaltourist.com

  • Went there last night for the first time. I thought both the food and cocktails were excellent. Agree about the TVs; it would be great ambiance without them.

  • MetroCyclist Food Crazy 9YR Inde Park/Albany Park Resident.

I've dined at Angelo's a few times. I like the owner, staff, and atmosphere a lot! It's fun to eat at the bar and chat with the friendly locals! However, the food is just so so, nothing special.

Head down the street to Sabatino's for much better old school Italian Cuisine!
