One Of The Most Famous Children's Book Authors Called Logan Square Home
LOGAN SQUARE - One of the most famous children's book authors of all time was born and raised right here in the Logan Square/Humboldt Park area. Shel Silverstein, perhaps best known for writing and illustrating "The Giving Tree" (1964) and "Where The Sidewalk Ends" (1974), spent many nights drawing cartoons in his family's noisy apartment on Palmer Street.

  • YAAAS! One of my favorite fun facts about Logan Square!! We need to put a plaque up in his old home to honor him.

  • A very creative writer, I feel honored Shel grew up here.

  • It doesn't surprise me. Years ago the owner of Margie Candies told me that the Logan Square/ Humbolt Park area had a large Jewish population with several synagogues in the area. Fun fact: Mike Royko (predecessor to John Kass but wrote a much more humane column) also grew up in the area. He went to Chase school until his parents divorced. Dan Rostenkowski grew up on Moffet.

Really excited about this. I wonder where they will find the space to have an outdoor walk up cafe though.

  • They could open the garage door? Could be REALLY smart to market to the parents of kids at the Ninja gym.

Your Guide To May Day Rallies And Actions Citywide
Thousands of demonstrators are expected to hit the streets for multiple rallies and marches on Monday in honor of May Day, International Worker's Day. This year's demonstrations could be some of the largest the city has seen in more than a decade, when some 400,000 people took to the streets in 2006 to protest Bush-administration immigration policies as well as call for comprehensive immigration reform.

Meanwhile, over at Northeastern, students and faculty gathered last Wednesday on the main campus near Foster and Kimball to hear Democratic gubernatorial candidates Ameya Pawar and Daniel Biss lambaste Rauner for running our state colleges and universities into the ground.

RE: University Budget Town Hall Meeting on Thursday, May 4

As we near the end of our spring semester -- and enter our 23rd month without a state budget -- I invite all members of our University Community to attend a Budget Town Hall meeting that I -- along with the Vice Presidents -- will host on Thursday, May 4, from 3:05 to 4:05 p.m. in the Main Campus Auditorium. So that those who are unable to attend in person may watch the meeting, I have arranged for a livestream of the event that will be accessible online at http://connectcast.tv/neiustream.

We will discuss our current budget, the situation in Springfield, and our next steps. There will be time to answer questions from the audience at the end. If you are unable to be there to ask a question, or would like to submit a question in advance, feel free to send them to the University's Feedback Form at www.neiu.edu/feedback.

Please don't forget that Monday is a furlough day, and the University will be closed. The University will reopen on Tuesday. We hope to see you at next Thursday's Town Hall meeting.

At NEIU, we have a budget. It'd be nice if our "Governor" did the same.
