Shooting at Jensen Park?

I saw a memorial under a tree near Wilson and Lawndale a couple of days ago. Was someone killed there recently? It was on the parkway near the south side of the park.

  • Albanyprk22 4600 N Monticello ave

I just drove by and I pulled over. It appears to be a memorial for a young man named Kelly. I live about a block away on Monticello and I wasn't aware of a shooting or a death nearby. So hopefully someone else has some more information.

What is going on at Botanica Lucero, 4644 N Kedzie Ave?

I live nearby and pass by the shop almost every day. The front of the building seems to be a store that sells religious icons, statues and whatnot. The back of the store leads out to a small patio area, which hosts small parties, like quinceaneras, which have music into the night-time hours.

This week, a work crew put up a metal awning on the back of the store. Lights on the extended patio also went up. Now, tonight, there's music, dancing and drinking going on back there. (Yes, I live that close ... no binoculars needed!)

I was mighty fine with the afternoon parties and music into the night ... but now I'm thinking that it's gone into something more unsanctioned (i.e. illegal) and possibly not such a good addition to our neighborhood.

Anyone know how to check if they have a permit to do this? And whether the addition to the back of the store was permitted by the city?

It's not exactly an after-hours club, but I do worry about the safety of the situation. The back of the lot has a locked gate and if anyone needs to get out (like during the fireworks celebration they had on the 4th), it could be a death trap.

  • Are they licensed to hold parties? A store is a different license than a facility that hosts parties. Call the alderman about that. Noise that is excessive late at night should be reported to 911 while it is happening. Attend you CAPS meeting and let the police know that there is an issue.

Lost cat in

This black and white (belly, paws) domestic short hair was hanging out in my neighbors yard for a while. Near Wilson & Kedzie.

No microchip, and it's been outside for a while so not holding out a lot of hope to find the owner. Though I have been posting and reading lost animal posts.

We couldn't foster long term, so we took her (we think it's female) to Chicago Animal Care and Control (other shelters were full).

She is super sweet and loves attention. Very docile. Would be good with kids, don't know about other cats (it met ours very briefly).

Let me know if it's your cat or you are interested in adopting and I'll give you more info.

Summer Projects....

Is anyone else working on summer projects? I have been busy as a bee the past week. Needed to replace the 80's era Brassy gold tone hardware fixtures in the bathroom and the kitchen. Also replaced the crappy old toilet seat with something sleeker and more modern. But the big project was rehabbing my deck chairs, that were covered in fabric that was mold and mildew and faded and sun-rotted. Not wanting to deal with that again, decided to go with stained wood slats, didn't really have any plan, but they seem to have come out ok... it was fun though

  • Chandra Lynn Dagley Pre-Medicine Chaser From AP

Yes last summer, I slacked a bit, planted a few thugs but nothing major. This summer I want to make some strides on giving the deck that outdoor room feel

  • And you got it done with plenty of time to enjoy the rest of summer!

She is at Chicago Animal Control right now. There is a video of her and she is super sweet and terrified. She is "rescue only", which means a pet rescue organization has to go get her and then will place her with a foster home.
She has very little time left. Perhaps a day, if that? I have no answers to any questions, so if you're interested call Animal Control. show up. Contact your pet rescue that you foster with. Quickly. This poor girl.

Neighborhood upkeep. Pot holes and dead trees.

I don't see much work being done in regards to pot holes and dead trees. There are 3 dead trees between Spaulding and Sawyer on Irving Park south side of the street , 1 in the alley by Irving Park and Kimball northeast corner and 1 by 4026 N Kimball. Just walking around there are some really bad sidewalks and alleys that are crumbling and Irving Park by the US Bank should be repaved as it always has pot holes. I have reported all of these and I don't see anything done.

It's everything we consume except milk & bottled, unflavored water. Even the healthiest of juices are taxed. It's outrageous & to add insult to injury our elected officials in Springfield are considering the same tax statewide. That means Cook County will be double taxed. So the beverage tax of $1.44 on a 12 pack of soda will become $2.88 on top of all the other taxes we pay!! Keep in mind this tax will apply to the drinks in restaurants, take out, self-serve etc. There's no avoiding it in Cook County.

I wasn't able to cut/paste the link - The website is noilbeveragetax.com There is a "click here" link on the page to the beverage list. There is also a petition to our state representatives to vote NO on the state beverage tax. ENOUGH IS ENOUGH already with putting their reckless, negligent ways on the backs of the taxpayers.

But no, I do not think she will win - nor is she fit to be the next Mayor.

Sadly, I hear that Chuy Garcia is going to run again. He will raise taxes and make Taxwinkle look like a Tax Conservative. Gotta fund all his "progressive programs" somehow.

But look, it really doesn't matter who will win the primary and general elections -- The REAL Mayor of Chicago has been, is, and will continue to be IL House Speaker Mike Madigan.

So the Tax and Spend governance of this city will continue. And we will continue to lose population and jobs/companies - and with them part of the tax base - making more "fees" (= taxes) and outright taxes (like property taxes) the ONLY way to fund the spendthrift ways of whoever the next mayor is .. and the one after that ... and the one after that, etc., etc.

As I've said - The people get government they deserve ... because they keep electing these bums.

Used CarX on Irving once when my brake line had busted (car towed to their place). I also needed them to fix the "Check Engine" problem, and the cables to my battery.

The brake line job was fine, but the "Check Engine" light came back on after about 15 miles of driving, and my car was still doing the problem caused by the battery cables (wouldn't start due to the battery cable could not be tightened enough and I would have to jiggle the cables to get the car to start). When I opened the hood I saw the work on the cables had not been done (I was charged for it), and the cap to the brake fluid was sitting on top of the engine. I gave CarX a chance to fix it, and they did the repair on the battery cables, but once again, after about 20 miles of driving my "Check Engine" light came back on.

After that I took my car to A to Z Auto Service on Western (4129 N. Western) after I saw a recommendation here on Everyblock. Gil was great, and I took my car back anytime I had any other problem, and he fixed it right the first time and was pretty reasonable with prices. Can't say enough about how great Gil is!

I didn't know anything about this development. Based on the above conversation, it seems to be a safe compromise to help struggling working class families, senior citizens and citizens with disabilities. Maybe we should address the problematic individuals who inconvenience our community at large on a different thread. Yet keeping in mind that many of the problematic ones are just transient people who've lost their compass and are not invested in the common good. I've seen some erratic drunks (heavily intoxicated people of all ages) tossing their half empty beer bottles and cans in neatly landscaped bushes that we are pouring our souls in keeping healthy and clean. As far as the neighborhood getting "cleaner" (I'm asuming that it means less litter) I agree that it's getting much cleaner but it's still way below my personal standards. Yet I don't think that this kind of development is going to bring over people who litter. Who litters? I don't have an acurate profile of the ones who litter, but this is what I have observed: people who drink alcohol on the streets and need to toss the half empty bottles or cans when they spot a CPD car, unsupervised kids who have permanent access to sugary treats from street vendors, a couple of elderly citizens from other countries who have ingrained habits from their own culture, coming from countries in which the tourist areas are pristine and everything else is neglected. That's what I have observed. I don't have any other empirical experience of people trashing the streets but I insist I don't think that this development is going to have a negative impact on the neighborhood.

Just shagged 2 of the guys that usually occupy the corner of Irving park and kimball. They were boozing it up and 1 was about to defecate behind a garage (s/w corner of drake and belle plaine). They were quite angry and confrontational. As they walked s/b St. Louis they were checking gates, probably to find a place to crash.

    Do NOT confront them.

If it turns into a fight between you and them, and you punch then in the mouth, you will make them bleed ...

AND you will tear open your knuckles. So YOU will bleed.

Such a blood exchange is EXTREMELY DANGEROUS because of the very high risk of disease transmission. HIV, Hep C, etc., etc.

If that happens, go immediately to the ER. It is a real medical emergency.

Don't confront. Call 911. Take photos with your phone.

@Nick: You're right. I should have qualified my response. The severely mentally ill aren't responsible for their actions, however something must be done to keep them from hurting themselves and others.

It is not like him not to come home and we've driven and walked around the area for 1.5 hours with no sight of him, so think someone must have found him.

He is approximately 80 lbs, his fur is black, he is very friendly and has turquoise collar with red tags and is chipped. He has a small white spot on his chest, a strange right angle at the end of his tail (broken tail before we rescued him 8 years ago), and a few blue spots on his tongue. A photo of him is below.

He does have epilepsy and is on medication twice a day, so we would love to have him home as soon as possible.

Would someone please post this on the OIPA Facebook page, and pass on to other local neighborhood Google groups? We would really appreciate it!

Thanks so much,
Jessica

Insulator Reco's

Hi there...just finished my move to Albany Park and am going through my 'Honey Do' list from the home inspector. Is there a reliable insulator company that anyone knows about that they have used? I hope to not cause too much damage to my walls, so any and all information about regular insulation or foam insulation would be helpful as well to know options that I have.

recycle batteries

Anyone know where to recycle old batteries? I took them to Best Buy, but they only take rechargable ones now.

  • A Neighbor 2 albany park resident

Aldermans office used to take them. Last time I took some in, I was told they don't do that anymore. I was told to throw them in the trash.

The mercury was phased out Starting in 1996. That wasn't the stop date.

I did a quick search (cuz not fully caffeinated) and couldn't find a final stop date for mercury use.
Therefore, depending upon the age of the battery, it may still have mercury.

Looking for a landscaping company recommendation

Albany Park neighbors - I recently purchased a home in Albany Park and am looking for suggestions for a landscaping company to help with my backyard. Any suggestions?

H iStephanie, We just used Farmers Garden Market on Elston (right by Tony's Grocery Store) to work on our front yard and they did an AMAZING job! We have an old bungalow and had some ugly mostly-dead bushes and trees removed and needed help in redefining the front yard. We worked with Nicole, she came over and looked at the yard to determine what plants, flowers and bushes would work best. Then we picked out what we liked and she and her team came and delievered all the new plants, trees and flowers, edged the yard, planted and even moved some of our other plants around to balance out the design. It's beautiful! I'm still on a high about it because everything was finished yesterday. : ) They were also less expensive than going to a landscaping company because you eliminate the middle man and work directly with the nursery. I honestly can't thank them enough for making our yard look so beautiful!!

Any suggestions for a security system?

We just moved into an apartment first floor and are looking into security systems. Any recommendations? Would love to hear from personal experience!

  • ward greenleaf Smokey and the Bandit, Hooper, Cannonball Run...

I prefer cameras. You can get good systems on amazon for under $500

  • We use simplisafe. It is super easy. Instead of a high monthly bill-you buy the kit. You install it yourself with 3m strips. Then when you move you just take the sensors down and take it with you. Then the monthly cost for the monitoring is only 14.99. I have it at home and the office. It monitors over cellular data and uses batteries. simplisafe.com

Christina, agree with Michelle. Just got ss and love it.

Missing lawn signs

We had a Hate Has No Home Here sign in front of our house since November. Today I noticed it missing. I've seen several other signs (HHNHH and similar) the area. Has anyone else had theirs go missing? I'm sure it's just some random jerk, but wanted to check.

  • Neighbor Bob Life long Chicagoan, Forest Glen resident since 19

LauraLiz: Sorry to hear that. I've had Halloween decorations stolen and political signs destroyed, but our Hate Has No Home Here sign is still standing in our front yard.

  • Random jerks. I have American flags in the ground along my sidewalk and when I left for work yesterday, I noticed someone took a couple of them and stuck them in the ground upside down.
