Reliable Auto Mechanic?

Good morning neighbors,

Can anymore recommend a mechanic in the area for typical repairs and maintenance? Perhaps a place near Lawrence or Pulaski. Thanks in advance!

Lincoln Park Mechanic at Lawrence and Leavitt. He's honest and the work is always guaranteed.

  • Another thumbs up for Maltos, on Montrose west of Kimball. They are honest, efficient and lovely to work with! We've been using them for a number of years.

Anyway, I was curious about what part of the diatribe he or she disagreed with since I went on and on about so many things and I don't follow right or left agendas for the sake of allegiance. I tend to disagree with both liberals and conservatives although I tend to favor the left as a more beneficial option for the average citizen. I just don't accept full ideological packages. I focus on specifics regardless of which party supports what. Just wanted to know their views but they probably just hate harangues.

People who run a rigged game recognize a bust out when they see one.

The state reported $99.4 million in Mega Millions sales and $208 million in Powerball sales within the 2016 budget year.

http://chicago.suntimes.com/news/powerball-mega-millions-to-drop-illinois-due-to-states-budget-crisis/

Powerball, Mega Millions to drop Illinois due to state's budget crisis
The association that runs the popular Powerball lottery and Mega Millions games will drop Illinois at the end of June without a budget agreement. Concern over the state of Illinois' fiscal condition prompted that decision by the Multi-State Lottery Association, according to internal Illinois Lottery communications.
    http://chicago.suntimes.com
  • Right... $99.4 million in Mega Millions sales and $208 million in Powerball sales in 2016 budget year, and 40% is retained by the state to fund education.
If no state budget come July 1, 2017, bye-bye Mega Millions & Powerball and the approx $122.9 million/yr for education funding.
And if they do drop Illinois, it would take years to reinstate the games in Illinois once a state budget is in place.
Every day, week, month, year without a budget the financial hole deepens and the road to repair lengthens.

Parking Spaces for Rent?

Hey Everyone,

My Fiance and I just moved to Albany Park (Sunnyside and Drake) and parking is a nightmare. It has been taking 20+ minutes on average to find a parking spot every night. I'm looking for 1 or 2 parking spaces for rent that are close to our location.

  • It's really terrible over there, All the illegal spots even get filled. Welcome to the neighborhood and you may definitely want to use your bike for short trips!

  • There would be more parking spaces if cars would be ticketed for no city stickers. On one block example 3400 W Belle Plaine there were 3 cars without Chicago city stickers. On 4000 N Drake there was 3 cars without Chicago city stickers. There's always a truck on the 4000 N Kimball block parked over night without stickers not to mention all the trucks and non passanger vans parked on residential streets that are not suppose to park overnight on them.

  • Joe

Janu, You don't need a city sticker to park on a street. You need a city sticker if your car is registered in Chicago. Based on your statement, you can't have visitors parking on Chicago streets.

Do any of my neighbors have a 'drop trap' I can borrow?

I am wondering if anyone has a drop trap I can borrow. I have tried to use my regular humane trap, but the feral cat I take care of has successfully eluded it, and he is now injured and needs medical care. They are a bit pricey, and just thought I'd see if a fellow neighbor has one I can borrow before dropping the $$. Thanks!

  • You might try PAWS.

  • They sell them on Amazon. I'm ordering one myself now for the ferals in the area in case I run into a situation and need it. Glad you brought this up and reminded me. I hope you find one soon and get your cat in for care.

  • Good sledge hammer.

  • some people still want to buy radiators, so consider selling them outright.

I have radiators and one is still holding together with epoxy, but I would consider buying one if the size fits my application.

what size height, width, length are the radiators and as far as you know are they in decent shape?

LOST Black Cat Lawndale Ave. near Eugene Field Park

Our indoor black male cat, Gogo, escaped last night. No collar or chip. He is normally friendly and bold but might be scared. He has his claws. He is fairly large and slender. We are on Lawndale close to Eugene Field Park, which is north of Argyle.

  • The OP posted this cat has been found.

  • ECM

Yes, and thank you, everyone for your concern and help! Happily we found Gogo in good shape hiding quite far down the alley - he had been out 2 nights. I bought a collar and had a tag engraved for him today and will continue to keep him inside as always, but he is a determined one and does try to escape. I doubt that he learned his lesson!

I've lived near Foster and Pulaski(just SE of it) for over 35 years. I will tell you that the safety levels are really on a block by block basis. Blocks with nothing but apartment complexes, you can expect more gang bangers and crime in general. I would stick to blocks with a better mix of homes and apartments. Just 10-15 years ago, shootings were very infrequent in this area. That's changed quite a bit however. Gun shots are a weekly occurrence culminating in much more frequent in the summer months. Being close to the Brown line is nice, however having to walk towards Lawrence and Kimball to get there has always been dangerous, more so at night. I would generally say around Foster and Pulaski, staying N and NW of that intersection would be safest but probably limited in apartment buildings.

I'm moving into the area and deciding whether to include sewer backup in my homeowner's coverage. Anyone have any advice or insights about the likelihood of sewer backup in the Albany Park area?

  • We used Bubba and Wayne too and they were great... but then they had to call out a huge truck w a giant hose (Power Plumbing? Maybe) to suck out all of the gravel on two different days during the process. I assume that's probably where the $2500 came from. But yes, post the $500 guy please!!!!

It's outrageous & to add insult to injury our elected officials in Springfield are considering the same tax statewide. That means Cook County will be double taxed. So the beverage tax of $1.44 on a 12 pack of soda will become $2.88 on top of all the other taxes we pay!! Keep in mind this tax will apply to the drinks in restaurants, take out, self-serve etc. There's no avoiding it in Cook County.

I wasn't able to cut/paste the link - The website is noilbeveragetax.com There is a "click here" link on the page to the beverage list. You are Tokyo, suckers!

If rich old white men like Madigan and Rauner were being hurt by this impasse, it would have been resolved yesterday. But it damages the poor, the struggling young — who rely on public universities and colleges that are dropping staff, injecting furlough days into their academic calendars, and, in general, suffering on starvation rations. Plus those with disabilities, victims of crime, and all the unfortunates who must fall back onto a safety net that both men are pawning to the rope merchant.

Godzilla never seems to care about Tokyo being crushed beneath him
Seven hundred days? Where has the time gone? That's easy. Washed over the waterfall of wasted opportunity. With the entire state of Illinois soon to follow, battered on rocks, then breaking apart as it plunges into the frothing financial abyss. Unless . . . . Well, unless nothing.

  • Rauner has been in office only a few years and is trying to fix this garbage that the Democrats started. Madigan has been in office for over 20yrs and the democrats want to raise taxes again. Rauner is actually standing up for us and trying to keep people from leaving this city.

Rauner walked into a mess determined to wrangle it into shape. Super - Go Bruce!

But holding the state budget hostage, while other forms of leverage to enact his reform agenda exist, has further damaged the state and deepens its debt daily.

In business, losing strategies are replaced by new ones until positive results are achieved. That's what's lacking in Rauner's leadership; responsive governance.

Sadly, the premise in the OP article is true; these two men can drive the state to complete ruin and they'll each come away unscathed. Only the taxpayers are hurt.

IL legislators across party lines have failed us in failing to meet fiscal and financial obligations, largely in favor of their self-interest, for nearly 30 yrs. Madigan is the linchpin throughout. Good overview of what got IL into this mess in the attached Reuters/dot/com link under headings "'ILLINOIS MATH'" and "A DOWNHILL RAMP" in which Edgar's comments hint at the ensuing failures to meet obligations.

Congratulations!

Rauner has set a record for failure.

  • How "Millennial" -- a trophy just for showing up.

  • Democrats have been ruining this city for years. Highest taxes in the US and highest crime. Keep voting for the Lefties and see how far that gets you.

Eighty years ago, striking workers in Chicago were shot down by police. It transformed the course of labor rights in the US.

Few people think of unions or the plight of the working class when they think of Memorial Day. But they should. On that day, eighty years ago, one of the most important events in American history unfolded, an event that transformed the course of labor rights in this country.

In 1937, most of the country celebrated Memorial Day on May 30, which was a Sunday. In Chicago, the holiday could not have been better accommodated by the bright and warm weather. This made the city’s southernmost reaches an incongruous backdrop to the killing that day of ten unarmed men by the Chicago Police.

This incident, known as the “Memorial Day Massacre,” is what makes this holiday so essential to American history.

The men who were killed were among 1,500 striking steel workers and their supporters who had marched on a plant owned by the Republic Steel Corporation. They were associated with a new labor federation called the Committee for Industrial Organization, or CIO, which in the space of a year had managed, often by audacious and militant strikes, to build unions in long-time anti-union strongholds like General Motors and US Steel.

I don't think the article intended to affront deceased military members. But I think it did so.

As for "the real Labor Day," May Day (May 1) is an ancient spring festival holiday. It wasn't until 1889 (three years after the May 4 Haymarket Riot in Chicago) that the Second International of Socialists and Communists meeting in Paris deemed it "Internationals Workers' Day." By then there had already been proposals in US states to have a "Labor Day" holiday. And in 1894, it was made a federal holiday. The first Monday in September.

It was not done to keep US workers from acting in solidarity with workers from all over the world. If any division were hoped for, perhaps it was to keep it separate from the Communists having purloined May Day (an ancient celebration of Spring) so they would have a ready-made celebration and act as though all that singing and dancing was to honor Communism and Socialism. It wasn't. And isn't.

Anyway, I maintain that an article that claims that Memorial Day is essential to American history because of a union v police conflict is still an affront to those intended to be the honorees of Memorial Day. And I apologize for attributing those words to you.

"While there are certain groups organizing to end the impasse, especially around college funding and social service agencies, the majority of Illinoisans (62 percent) feels unaffected by the impasse, according to an October 2016 poll by the Paul Simon Public Policy Institute.

That sentiment is misguided. Experts on both sides of the aisle agree that the lack of budget is making the state’s financial problems worse, not least because the state is racking up an estimated $700 million in interest on unpaid bills in FY2017 alone. (For comparison, the state paid a total of $1 billion in interest on unpaid bills from 2004 to 2014, when we had budgets.) That doesn’t even account for the human costs of lost services and the agencies that have closed due to the impasse."

    The Illinois Budget Disaster, Explained
On May 31 the Illinois legislature will wrap its spring session, signaling the last chance our state has to pass a budget for the upcoming financial year, which begins July 1. This would not be a news item in itself if Illinois hadn't already suffered two years without a coherent spending plan; worse, it seems poised to go into a third.

  • From this article: "The Democrats, led by House Speaker Mike Madigan, rely on a significant base of support from unions that represent public workers." Exactly. Which is why they rejected Rauner's budget. Yes, Rauner provided one way back in 2015. But since the tax hikes he (yes, Rauner's budget allowed for tax increases) called for were tied to real structural reforms to fix the underlying causes for the fiscal disaster Illinois finds itself in, there was no way that Madigan/Cullerton could let it pass.

3 Removal of some corporate/personal income tax loopholes
    4 A higher minimum wage

Rauner wants: 1. freezing taxes, 2. legislative control and limits 3. make Illinois business friendly and like other states and 4. reduce the cost to the taxpayers of Illinois.

The Democrats want: 1.increase taxes, 2. increase taxes, 3. increase taxes and 4. discourage employers from moving to Illinois.

Don't blame Rauner; blame the Democrats who control the legislature.

Has anyone else run into the lady that hangs around the McDonald's on Kedzie and Wilson? Does anyone know what her story is?

I was standing outside of the McDonald's on Kedzie and Wilson just now smoking a cigarette, and the lady came up to to ask me for a cigarette. She has approached me several times before asking for cigarettes and I always give her one. Then she will always have very incoherent conversations with me. Most of the time, she'll mouth the words to an entire conversation without saying anything but I think she assumes I heard her, because she'll then ask me if I understand. I usually just nod along and say nothing.

Today she got very angry with me and made vague threats against me and was telling an imaginary third person to throw me in jail. I think she thinks she was being interviewed by the news because she was talking about a camera and a news helicopter.

I don't feel threatened because I'm certain she has no idea what she's saying, but I'm concerned because I feel like she has been very badly abused and traumatized. When I am able to catch pieces of her conversations, it sounds like she's remembering really horrible things that she's been through.

Has anyone else had any interaction with her? Does anyone know if there are any mental health agencies that could help her? She looks to be in her 50's or 60's, white woman with very chapped or windburned skin and a lot of missing teeth. I assume she's homeless because she's always wearing the same clothes and smells pretty bad. I see her fairly regularly, so I guess she may have some tie to the neighborhood.

  • Mental illness sucks and many people who are not familiar with it do not understand how it deeply affects individuals. Mental illness is one of the leading causes of homelessness, besides domestic abuse, addiction, etc. Also to note that just because someone has a drug and alcohol problem, does not always mean that they are dangerous. People who are living on the street just need extra attention instead of people in the community judging them due to social stigmas or ignoring them, so thanks for caring and asking for resources.

  • I'm not saying all homeless people with or without mental illness are substance abusers , but this Lady I have seen doing so.whether people take precaution is a choice, just don't cry about it if something happens.

The legislators aren't doing a very good job or have "have prudent income v spending habits". So why do you think the people would be any worse?

Let the citizens decide how much to allocate to the state, let the legislators decide how to spend what the people are willing to spend.

We need more control by the people, not more control by the elected officials.

  • "why do you think the people would be any worse?"

Monticello and Cullum

My husband got home from work about 4:30 this morning and said this corner was filled with police and news crews. I figured it would be a "first shooting of the Memorial day weekend" type story but in the one story I read they didn't mention this area. Anyone know what's up?

  • Nevermind. I just found out it was a house fire. And sadly 2 dogs were lost in it.

Are there no work houses? No prisons?

This is Rauner's Illinois.

"Responding to nearly two years without a state budget, The Baby Fold will discontinue residential treatment center services, the Normal-based human services agency announced Thursday. The residential treatment center is for children who have been removed from their homes because of trauma, abuse or neglect and have significant mental health issues. "
