chicago style hot dogs

Where can I find the best Chicago style hot dog in Wicker park/UK area? All tourist places boil the hot dogs, don't grill them, the only one place I know that grill them is Gold Cost hot dogs on Wells St. Is anything like that around here?

Jimmy's Red Hots are a sublime experience indeed, been going there for decades. Not a fully compliant Chicago dog tho, no poppyseeds, tomatoes, pickle spear or celery salt. They steam the sausages and the buns though, and are highly recommended.

I haven't been to Odge's in awhile, so not sure how they are these days. George's at Damen and Cortland is my local, but I don't know if they grill on request.

  • Where is Odge's?? I never heard of this place.
Bruceski - I agree, Jimmy's is not located in the safest part of town, last time I was there, there were a few panhandlers around the place.

Police Station Closing Augusta and Wood

Has anyone heard of any updates regarding the closing of the Police Station at Augusta and Wood? It would be a real shame to lose the station. Anyone know of anything that is being done to fight the closing?

Unfortunately, you are very late to this issue. Its been discussed on FB, EB and other outlets ad nauseum for the past 7 months.

Its a done deal, station will close.

  • I was at the station a few weeks ago and they said they would be out by August if not sooner.

Actually November is the slated closing - as soon as the new 12th is done at 14th and Racine. I and many other community people and groups fought hard to save it. In the end the Aldermen directly affected by this closing all voted to close it in the last budget. It is bad for the community, but at this point we can just wait and see. We are trying to get police presence at the location and there has been talk about night watch out of the old 13. Supt. McCarthy stated two months ago at a press conference when the 19th and 21st were shuttered that the 13th would be closed sometime in the fall when the 12th is completed. To learn more you should visit Save13.org and sign up for the newsletter. We also have a Facebook page. Oh I also spoke with some FOP officials recently and it's not clear to them either when the closing will take place exactly or what will happen there.

Hello,

For a long time I was on the fence about either getting a nice car and commuting to Chicago vs moving to the city. I did not act on it and eventually chose to move to wicker park starting june 1st because I can't take the 1+ hour commute one way. The crappy part is my car of 10 years is really starting to fall apart. My problem is the city and winter are rough to cars and I'm really concerned if I get a new one how trashed it will be.. what are your thoughts? I look at nice cars I see now in Chicago and I can see all the nicks on bumpers and stuff, it sucks that people don't care about other people's property... I am thinking about just getting another beater and not getting into too much debt.

  • I park a 2003 Ford Focus on the street and its gotten some dings but since it's as old as it is, you don't really notice. My neighbors in Wicker Park will park their brand new Lexus, BMW, Range Rover, etc on the street as well. While I would never do that, some people are fine with it. My insurance is $40 per month since I am a good driver and do not use the car for commuting. Good Luck.

Need: someone who's tenant-landlord law savvy

Hello my good neighbors. I need to ask for some more of your wisdom. My roommates and I are having quite a few issues with our landlord and our apartment; I need advice from someone who knows what they're talking about. Could I putz around on the internet sifting through building codes and legislation? Yes (and I've already done a bit of that), but I just really don't have time to do all the analyzing and summarizing myself. Can someone please impart some of their knowledge? Thank you!!

  • To which the tenant would have several avenues of recourse.

And to hire a collection agency, the landlord would have to have a judgment - which he would get only through a lawsuit.

    Layne,
Lara gave the exact advice that I would regarding how to communicate with the written word: certified mail with return receipt.

And thanks to Alex T. for supplying the links to the tenant-landlord ordinance. I read the whole ordinance back when I had my issues. I found it not to be too difficult to follow - no more difficult than a lease document, to be sure.

Once again, the tenants-rights.org (Metropolitan Tenants Organization) is a GREAT resource. They'll hold your hand through the process :-)

Chicago Police Misconduct: 'Repeater' Officers Account For Millions In City Payouts

Exposé: 140 cops, 1% of the force account for more than 25% of the city's paid out settlements to victims of police abuse. And they stay in their jobs, repeating their misconduct.

  • Second City Cop must be all over this story, right? Right?

  • alex trebeck Ukrainian Village since 1990

Fortunately, the IL Supreme Court just ended the prohibition against photographing cops. (The police sure didnt want that to happen.) The army of public camera phones should discourage some of the bad behavior, and will also help document those who cant help themselves.

I've only been there a couple times, and yeah, it's not going to compare to any type of higher end burger, but man if you want a double or triple patty w steak fries, for a good price, look no further.

Rich G is totally on w the Mpls/Chicago Jucy comparison. I will say though, the real Jucy Lucy is something I a LOT about my home, and Anthem does a better rendition than anywhere else I've been to in Chicago (Small Bar, blech).

Garbage / Recycling pick up

Hi,

We just moved to Wolcott and Division and are still figuring out the logic behind the garbage and recycling pick up schedules.

Any insights on this?

Thanks!
S.

  • JRH Humboldt Park

Garbage is picked up by the City every week, should typically be the same day of the week. Recycling is picked up by private contractors every other week. The recycling days SHOULD be consistent, but 311 and the city will have little info on these private haulers' schedules. My experience is it can vary.

  • Your garbage should be picked up every Friday. Recycling is picked up every two weeks, on what day, I don't know.
