Box truck dumping trash in Alley

At 9:30 tonight a large box truck pulled up in our alley on the 1900 W Cortland block and dumped 8 old TVs and computer monitors and a couple of tires in front of our garage.

Has this happened to anyone else? Anything we can/should do?

Thanks!

  • Maplewood John Life-long Chicagoan

One slimy "clean out your basement" contractor working every day (who doesn't want to pay dump fees for the stuff he collects & can't resell) may become a one-man trash crime-wave, until the police catch him fly-dumping a few times.

  • UPDATE - I filed a 311 request online on Tuesday, received a call on Wednesday morning from streets & san saying they had been out to take a look and that they would remove the trash. It was collected this morning. I was impressed with the responsiveness.

We are still trying to track down a license plate on our neighbor's camera. Streets and san said the truck would be impounded with a $2500 fine.

Catching a buzz without the booze at Chicago's first kava bar
Kava is like a combination of weed, booze, and caffeine," the barista behind the counter informed me on my second visit to Tropikava Kafe and Juice Bar. A chalkboard on the wall described it as a "magical root" from the South Pacific, Hawaii, Fiji, and Tonga.

1124 N Damen- Work, no permits, AT&T cable cut?

I wonder if anyone knows what is happening at 1124 N Damen, at the corner of Damen & Haddon, the beautiful landmark home that was recently sold by its long time owners? It looks like they were digging for new water service and may have hit an AT&T cable. Four AT&T trucks have been over there and men working through the night, and still there.

It looks like they are also starting to work on the house itself, and there are no permits on file with the city.

I'm really hoping this incredible home is not butchered with unlicensed hack work like so many others.

  • It is quite a jolt, no matter how persistent the traffic. Lakeshore has told me that the street is to be repaired today, so hopefully your vases can be back up on the tables this evening!

One thing's for sure: As the current transit-oriented development boom unfolds along Milwaukee Avenue it's bringing major changes to the affected neighborhoods. Many people agree that adding dense, low-parking development near Blue Line stations is a good strategy for reducing car dependency.
