In looking at the current salaries of teachers, they are in line with the national averages. Teaching is a job that takes an enormous amount of time outside of the actual classroom time. And if CPS wants to provide a decent education for its students, the teachers have to be reasonably compensated or the good teachers will go elsewhere.

It's my understanding that teachers are more concerned with school closings, layoffs and the cuts being made to schools that negatively affect the students. If they weren't an issue, I shudder to think about how CPS would be run. Rahm has chosen to close public schools in favor of charter schools run by people who donate heavily to his campaigns. Once again, CPS becomes a casualty in the greedy political game of Chicago.

  • The number of 14 year olds in Chicago has declined from about 510,000 in 1975 to just over 300,000 today. A similar decline is seen in the number of 5-9 year olds. That is why schools need to be closed. Don't kid yourself. If the CTU wanted to provide a...

The number of 14 year olds in Chicago has declined from about 510,000 in 1975 to just over 300,000 today. A similar decline is seen in the number of 5-9 year olds. That is why schools need to be closed. Don't kid yourself. If the CTU wanted to provide a decent education for students, it would not fight merit pay and dismissal of bad teachers. And you have your head in the sand if you think Chicago teacher salaries are in line with national averages:

    See: https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/wonk/wp/2012/09/12/chicago-teachers-make-more-than-the-national-average/

As the article states, The National Council on Teacher Quality has an excellent database on teacher compensation in large school districts and compared Chicago Public Schools' compensation for teachers of each education and experience level to the average of the nation's largest 50 school districts. Each step of the way, CPS teachers earn more. If you look at the graph, Chicago teachers made about 20% more than the average of the other large school systems - and that is just salary and does not take into account the outsized benefits of CTU. Chicago has a higher starting salary than New York despite that city's greater cost of living.
