There are some really great movies that were shown this summer, of the ones I know -- American classics such as The Wizard of Oz. I'm glad Wall-E was shown, and Inside Out seemed very good to me. It's interesting (briefly) to adopt a moralistic perspective on these films, and how things have changed (or not) since Hollywood's golden age (under the old Hayes Codes). Cool Hand Luke is a martyr-the-individualist film, with one notable salacious scene and some vivid physical torture. The Sting of course glorifies con men (even if it's in the course of taking down another criminal). Some Like It Hot, one of my personal all time favorites, is about as perverse as a popular entertainment could be when it was released in 1959, and though played for laughs the sexual hijinks, impostures and reversals remain the heart of the film. The public voted for The Dark Knight -- so be it. But maybe in this case curation would help introduce something onscreen less familiar but more heartening for our citizenry.

  • @Jazzmandel: If you are into classic movies, be sure to catch the Coen Bros :Hail, Caesar". Hilarious parody of the studios set in 1950. Probably not appearing in movies in the parks for quite a few years, though.

Throwback candy: When’s the last time you had Pop Rocks and Big League Chew? Thought so. A collection of childhood treats doubles as dessert and a hilarious conversation starter. Psst! Dylan’s Candy Bar (445 N. Michigan Ave. 312-702-2247) boasts an entire section devoted to retro finds.

24 ways to have the perfect Chicago picnic
For most of us, dining alfresco means locating the nearest patio or rooftop with good vibes and decent food. But in a city with sprawling green space and beaches for days, there are cheaper ways to enjoy the season's biggest perks. Yeah, we're talking about a good old-fashioned picnic.

click to enlarge Often, as I've strolled past the colorful storefronts of Chicago's Chinatown, I've noticed many cheap department-store-type mountain bikes-Huffys, Murrays, and Magnas-cable-locked to racks, poles, and fences along Cermak Road and Wentworth Avenue. I wondered if they belonged to recent immigrants to the neighborhood, toiling at blue-collar jobs in pursuit of the American dream.
